RENK SEED HEADQUARTERS

We know you have a lot of things to deal with on your farm. We’re here to make sure
your seed isn’t one of them.
Renk Seed has worked closely with farmers since 1846 and our mission has always
been to take care of your seed as if it were being planted on our own farm. To do
that, we focus on delivering the best products in the market.
We’ve made significant investments in research and technology to ensure that our
products provide the best yields. What’s more, we’ve cultivated relationships with
biotech companies to deliver genetics and gene-inserted technologies that improve
the returns on your farm.
it. We’ve adapted to new technologies and updated our facilities to ensure that
you’re getting the highest-quality products, products that we stand behind proudly.
We’re also serious about customer service. We’ve been farming for six generations
so we’ve seen both good times and not-so-good times. What matters most is the
relationships we’ve built with our dealers and customers, because people want to
work with someone they know and trust. We aim to put great products in the hands
of our customers.
In the end, we’re here to reduce the number of things you have to worry about so you
can focus on what makes you money. Like marketing your grain, taking care of your
cows, setting your planter properly and harvesting your hay on time.
These can be challenging times. But when you partner with Renk, you know that
you’re getting a company that provides top-notch technology and expertise with the
kind of customer service that only comes with more than 170 years of experience.
CORN MANAGEMENT
Modern corn hybrids are selected and bred to perform even under high-stress conditions. Maximizing the quality of the environment the hybrid
is planted in and minimizing yield-robbing stresses creates a successful year. You can’t control the weather, but beyond that, there are a few
things you can have a say in. Good management quickly pays for itself in increased yield.
PRE-PLANT
FERTILITY NEEDS
Make certain that your fertility and soil pH match your yield
expectations. Test your soil to know exactly what you need
and follow the recommendations. Remember that nitrogen
requirements for corn on corn are signifi cantly higher than
for corn on rotated ground.
WAIT FOR “FIT” FIELD CONDITIONS
Research has shown that in most years earlier planted corn
will outperform later planted corn. This should give you a
desire to get the seed in as early as possible. With modern
seed treatments, soil temperature is not as big of a factor as
it once was, but having a good seed bed is a must. Excessive
soil moisture and poor soil tilth have major impacts on seed
germination, early growth and seedling health. Soil compaction
and poor seed-to-soil contact set the crop up for poor stands
and weak, late emerging plants.
REVIEW HYBRID POSITIONING INFORMATION
Make sure you have the right hybrids selected for the right
ground. Ground with limited yield potential makes it hard to
justify the more expensive traited hybrids. Corn on corn
ground usually requires hybrids with stronger roots and stalks,
along with insect protection. Some hybrids have regional
tendencies. Your Renk Seed representative is your resource in
getting the right products in the right ground. A great product
that is not positioned accurately may only perform as well as
an average product, or worse.
AT PLANTING
PLANTER AND MONITOR ADJUSTMENTS AND CALIBRATION
Spend the time and the money here for accurate, consistent
drop. An accurate population of evenly distributed seed
without doubles and skips is critical for maximum yields.
Even if no changes are necessary, it is worth peace of mind
to know that this will not be a yield bottleneck.
PLANTING DEPTH
Check your planting depth often; not just when you enter your
fi rst fi eld but every time you begin planting in a different fi eld
condition (soil type, crop rotation, tillage type, etc.). Each of
these impact the depth of seed placement. Keeping the depth
between 1.75"-2.25" is critical to a uniform distribution of
evenly growing plants, as well as keeping the root system of
the plants deep enough to be effective and strong.
CORRECT SPEED
No other way to say it. Speed kills. Planting at speeds
greater than the recommended zone for your planter causes
planter bounce, which results in uneven seed placement. It
dramatically increases the numbers of doubles and gaps;
both of which lead to unproductive or underproductive plants.
Speeding up may seem like the right thing to do as storm
clouds come looming in, but weigh the fact that 10-20 bushels
per acre yield loss is a reality and your decision could cost
you $60-$100 or more for every acre that you choose to slam
in quickly.
GROWING SEASON
SCOUT YOUR FIELDS EARLY AND OFTEN
It is hard to fi x or head off problems if you are not actively
looking for them. It is important to check for crusting, weeds,
diseases and insects starting shortly after planting and
continuing up to harvest.
CONTROL THOSE WEEDS
Just remember that weeds taller than 4" will reduce your yield.
Starting clean with a burn-down or plowed fi eld helps the corn
get ahead of the weeds and gives a good window for follow up
spraying as needed.
CONTROL FUNGAL DISEASES
Fungal diseases can be a signifi cant yield drag and need to be
scouted for. Corn on corn acres tend to have a higher rate of
incidence along with fi elds that have shown a history of
disease. Often a folial treatment can work wonders.
Remember you normally need to order fungicides and
application early.
CONTROL INSECTS
Using genetic traits to control Corn Borers, Rootworms,
Ear Worms and Western Bean Cutworms is clearly the best
insurance against damage from these yield-robbing insects.
Your Renk Seed representative can prescribe the best trait
options for your operation. Those not using traited insect
control hybrids need to spray insecticides to control
explosions in insect pest populations.
ADVANTAGE INOCULANTS
ADVANTAGE FORAGE ENHANCER
Advantage Forage Enhancer is an inoculant of bacteria and
enzymes designed to reduce dry matter loss and maintain
high quality haylage and silage. Advantage does this by rapidly
dropping pH to inhibit mold and yeast feeding. Less mold
and yeast feeding means less heating, dry matter loss and
spoilage. This preserves and helps maximize the crop with
very high quality feed. Your cows will respond with higher milk
production.
WHY ADVANTAGE FORAGE ENHANCER
IS BETTER
• Contains four strains of bacteria to work in a wide pH
and moisture range.
• Applies high level of bacteria per gram of crop 150,000
cfu/g of crop which is above the industry average level of
100,000 cfu/g of crop.
• Combines bacteria PLUS enzymes (most competitors do
not include this critical component). Enzymes help break
down some of the plant fiber to help the bacteria be more
efficient.
• Water-soluble products contain a buffering agent to keep
the solution neutral in application tank. This keeps the
bacteria viable and prevents settling in tank.
• Advantage Forage Enhancer comes in a dry flowable
(FS370DF) and two water soluble (FS320WS and
FS340WS).
ADVANTAGE HMC 780B & 790B
Advantage HMC is a Buchneri-based inoculant that excels in
yeast control on feed-out in addition to quick fermentation
after harvest. Yeast control on feed-out helps to extend bunk
life with less crop thrown out due to spoilage or feeding cows
partially spoiled forage. In some cases it has been known to
reduce somatic cell count in milk. Ideal for high-moisture corn,
but does work with silage also.
ALFALFA PRODUCTS
HARVXTRA ®
HarvXtra® is reduced lignin alfalfa stacked with
Roundup®herbicide resistance. By reducing lignin
12-15%, which is indigestible to animals, it allows
the plant to put its energy more fully into
digestible portions of the plant. The benefi t of
this is that as plants grow the HarvXtra variety
will be at higher quality and digestibility than a
non-HarvXtra variety at the same maturity (see
graph 1). This allows for higher quality feed, wider
window for harvest or delaying harvest, increasing
overall tonnage and maintaining proper quality.
This can be a sizable benefi t. By harvesting at a
later maturity you can gain more tonnage and not
sacrifi ce quality. Conservatively, you could gain ¾
ton per acre per year or 2.5 tons per bag per year.
That could gain you a benefi t of $375 per year.
Renk uses irrigation on our fields to ensure against drought.
ROUNDUP READY ®
ALFALFA
Renk is proud to offer Roundup Ready®
alfalfa. This technology allows for spraying
Roundup herbicide in your alfalfa stand for
the ease of use and weed control you
expect from Roundup herbicide. Using
Roundup should also help keep your stand
weed-free and aid in improving overall feed
value.
RENK PREMIUM ALFALFA PAYS!
In tough economic times it is natural to
look for areas to cut costs. Some people
choose to use cheaper seed or extend an
existing stand one more year. Unless you
have some extreme circumstance, we
don’t think this is a good choice. Good
alfalfa pays for itself quickly and rapidly.
Good alfalfa takes all of 1.5 tons of hay
to pay for one bag of seed. That same bag
of seed can plant well over three acres and
produce over 20 tons in three years.
Alfalfa like our STARGOLD or SPRINGPEARL
should show a minimum of 5% more yield
over most brands of alfalfa, which should
net an extra 2.5 tons or $350 in three
years. This will far outpace the extra $100
in seed cost.
STARGOLD or SPRINGPEARL are the
alfalfas for those serious about getting the
best return out of their acres.
WHEN YOU CONSIDER ALFALFA,
LOOK FOR THE TOTAL PACKAGE
WINTER HARDINESS
If your fields are subject to poor snow
cover, ice sheeting and poor drainage,
you should plant a winter hardy variety.
Strictly defined, winter hardiness describes
the ability to withstand the extreme cold,
temperature fluctuations, heaving and ice
sheeting common in the upper Midwest.
FORAGE QUALITY
Getting the highest quality possible from
your alfalfa crop requires proper
management. Varieties with high natural
forage quality may be harvested later
without a loss of quality, while lower quality
alfalfa should be cut earlier. Higher quality
ratings give you a wider harvest window.
Alfalfa with a feed quality rating of eight or
higher can be harvested in the early flower
stage vs. mid-bud for other varieties. This
results in an increase in tonnage and no
loss of quality.
DISEASE RESISTANCE
Fields with poor drainage require a stronger
disease package to maintain a quality
stand over a period of years. Select
varieties for a high score (30 is the highest
possible score) to ensure a long productive
stand.
MAKING THE MOST OF YOUR ALFALFA
We at Renk clearly feel we have the best
alfalfa on the market, but good
management is crucial to getting the
highest return. Here are a few key points to
remember in raising alfalfa:
SEEDING
Alfalfa likes a firm seed bed and should
be planted very shallow, ¼” to ½” on
medium and heavy soils and ½” to 1” on
sandy soil. Seeding rate should be around
12-15 pounds per acre (use higher rates if
seedbed is in poor shape). Direct seeding
is recommended unless fodder is needed
or you are planting on highly erodible
ground. Due to autotoxicity, alfalfa fields
should be out of alfalfa for at least one
year before reseeding with alfalfa.
FERTILIZER
Alfalfa performs the best when soil pH is
6.5 to 7.5. In most cases, this requires
lime to be applied at least one year before
going into the ground with alfalfa. Proper
pH improves availability of phosphorous
and potassium and increases activity of
nitrogen-fixing Rhizobium. Having adequate
phosphorous the seeding year is key for
establishment. Potassium levels should be
closely monitored throughout stand life as
this nutrient likely has the most effect on
overall yield. Each ton of alfalfa removes
the equivalent of 150 pounds of 0-10-40
fertilizer. The nitrogen needs of alfalfa
should be adequately taken care of by
Rhizobium bacteria that colonize the roots
and fix nitrogen from the air.
LIFE OF STAND
When alfalfa stands fall below 40 stems
per square foot (at 6" growth), yield
potential becomes limited and no longer
profitable. Rotating the field is highly
recommended at this point.
CUTTING SCHEDULE
For the best combination of high-yield
and high-quality, first cutting should be
taken at bud stage (mid to late May). The
second cutting should be 28-33 days later
or mid-bud stage. The third cutting 38-55
days later or 25% bloom. Leave only 1” of
stubble, if possible, with your equipment.
An optional fourth cut can be taken midto
late-October after a killing frost, but
6” of stubble should be left behind to
help prevent a winterkill. No cutting is
recommended from September 1 to
mid-October, as this leaves the stand
vulnerable to not having enough root
reserves to weather the winter if a killing
frost comes in that time period.
AFTER HARVEST
Losses after harvest can be as high as
30%, so following proper management
is important. Keep equipment tuned to
minimize mechanical losses and follow
proper moisture guidelines, bale hay at 18-
20% and ensile at 50-70%. Silage inoculant
can be very effective in preserving silage
quality (see our Advantage information, pg.
29), especially when field drying times are
under two days.
PEST CONTROL
Weed control is very important the seeding
year, but after that, the return on spraying
is less economical. Spraying older stands
does little to change tonnage but may
improve quality based on weed species
being killed.
The main insect pest to monitor in the
Midwest is the Potato Leafhopper, which
moves up from the south and does damage
to the second and third crop. Normally, it
is economically justifiable to spray once or
twice for Leafhoppers.
RENK CARRIES ELITE VARIETIES OF THE FOLLOWING GRASSES:
MINT FESTULOLIUM
Festulolium is a cross between Perennial Ryegrass and Meadow Fescue, giving it several very
excellent qualities: ease of establishment, persistence, rapid regrowth, good disease
resistance, season-long performance and high forage quality. Don’t let the long name put you
off. If you need a grass, use Festulolium.
STOUT ORCHARDGRASS
A late maturing variety that keeps its quality when seeded with alfalfa. Also does extremely
well when frost seeded into a thinning pasture.
TIMOTHY
Fits well in clover and alfalfa mixes. Highly palatable. Horses love it.
OTHER OPTIONS
Renk is evaluating other treatment
Check with your dealer to see what options
are available.
PACKAGING SIZES
Renk soybeans come packaged in either
140,000-seed paper bags or seed handler
bulk boxes. This ensures a consistent price
per acre and per 140,000 seeds. This
should help in more precise ordering of
seed.
Bulk boxes are targeted to have 6,300,000
seeds per box (45-140,000 seed units).
In cases where seed is too large, we will
put in as much seed as we can fit and
reduce the price according to the amount of
seed in box.
Ideal depth for planting soybeans is ¾
inches. Maximum depth is 1½ inches.
Soybeans must be able to push the entire
seed out of the ground. Putting the seed
too deep under less than ideal conditions
can prevent the seed from doing this.
Planting population should be around
150,000 to 200,000 for narrow row
planting (15” or less). For wider rows the
population should be in the 130,000 to
170,000 range. Population should be
adjusted up or down based on condition of
seed bed and ability of the planter to put
seeds at proper depth and spacing.
NEW SEED VERSUS BIN RUN
WHEN YOU BUY RENK SOYBEANS YOU GET SOME HUGE BENEFITS OVER USING SAVED SEEDS.
NEWEST GENETICS
To keep soybean genetics advancing in yield and to bring
new traits to the market costs a lot of money. Your purchase
of soybeans funds this costly development process. It is
estimated that genetically modified soybeans increased the
national farm income by $1.56 billion. Past funding has
allowed the development of Genuity ® Roundup Ready 2
Yield ® and is funding the development of drought-resistant
soybeans among other new technologies. Everyone benefi ts
with you getting higher yielding varieties with new traits, and
we can keep our breeding work moving forward.
HIGHEST QUALITY SEED
Our growing and processing of seed revolves around giving
you pure, high germinating, weed-free seed. Bin run seed
will never match the quality of seed we can produce. Don’t
take the risk of putting seed in the ground with unknown
germination and/or purity. We also maintain a full stable of
varieties across different maturities to meet your seed needs.
WARRANTY BENEFITS
Weather and planting conditions can make even the
best seed fail. When this happens we stand behind our
soybeans. If you have stand issues after planting, we can
get you new seed at a discounted price.
NEW SEED PAYS
When you factor in all of the above, you can see a defi nite
benefi t to using new seed. University studies show a 1.2-5.9
bushel advantage. Don’t forget the hidden costs of bin run
beans: loss of grain to sell, cleaning cost, transportation/
storage costs, no warranty and higher planting rates to offset
lower germination.
XTEND YOUR WEED CONTROL + XTEND YOUR YIELD
Get industry-leading weed control with up to 14 days
of soil activity on small-seeded broadleaf weeds*
and featuring VaporGrip ® Technology for a significant
reduction in volatility potential.
See your seed or ag chem dealer or visit
*On certain small-seeded broadleaf weeds. Results may vary, depending on rainfall and soil type. Always use dicamba with traditional residual herbicides in pre-emergence and postemergence applications that have different effective sites of action, along with other Diversified Weed Management Practices including the use of glyphosate.
XtendiMax® herbicide with VaporGrip® Technology and in crop use may not be approved in all states.
