Driving this Winter
Winter isn’t a fun time to drive: the roads are wet, winds batter you from
all directions and you’ll inevitably get stuck in more traffic than normal. To
keep any skidding and tyre squealing to the track, we’ve put together some
top tips for winter driving (we know it’s boring but we want our vets to stay
safe!)
During extreme weather motorists are
advised against driving altogether,
but for ambulatory vets this is simply
not an option. From a quick Google
search, much of the guidance is
geared towards driving in heavy
snow, a rare occurence in the UK.
The doom and gloom of Britain’s
weather is more likely to bring wind,
rain and dark nights. We collated
some simple tips to limit the misery
it brings.
Wind
• Take extra care when overtaking
others - particularly be aware
of sudden gusts of wind when
passing large vehicles such as
lorries.
• Hold the steering wheel firmly
- maintaining a constant grip of
the wheel will give you as much
control as possible.
Rain
• Reduce your speed - slowing
down lessens the risk of
aquaplaning.
• Use a low gear when driving
through flooded areas - keep
your engine revs up but don’t
rush to avoid flooding your
engine.
• Put your lights on - you will
improve your visibility to others
when driving in the rain or spray.
The Dark
• Check your lightbulbs - ensure
both your rear and head-lights
are functioning correctly.
• Clean your windows and
windscreen - condensation
can leave a hazy film on your
windscreen and windows which
will impair visibility.
• Pack supplies in case of
emergency - store a collapsible
shovel and reflective jackets in
your boot.
