Now in its fourth year the BEVA Trust and British Horse Society Healthcare
Clinics are still very popular with member volunteers. This spring 37 vets and
6 EVN’s enjoyed four great days of experience, team work and camaraderie.
We are now looking for volunteers for the Autumn Clinics; Nottinghamshire
on 25th September, York on 8th October and Aberdeen on 23rd October.

Meet The BEVA President
Congress marks the end of Renate Weller’s Presidency and the beginning of
Tim Mair’s term. Before Tim takes the reins we ask them a few questions...
Renate, what has been your
presidential highlight?
This is a really difficult question to
answer… I guess the whole year really
drove home what a great profession
we are.
I know it sounds really cheesy but
wherever I went and whoever I spoke
to, it is pretty clear that while we
may wince and complain about a lot
of things we all work towards one
common goal which is to
help animals.
Can you tell us what you’re most
proud of achieving?
I’m pleased to announce we’re
launching Leg Up at Congress 2019.
A project to support new equine vets
entering the profession by providing
career advice and guidance from
established equine vets who have
been in their shoes. You can find out
more on the BEVA website.
Do you have any advice for Tim?

Survive the year without any

• Continue BEVA’s work on the
current problems of recruitment
and retention.

10-15 years.

Performing a laparotomy to remove
a bladder stone in a horse on the
owner’s lawn (in 1981)! In the middle
of the surgery the owner arrived
with lemonade and cucumber
sandwiches! The horse made
a full recovery.

Giving Vets a Leg Up
We’re pleased to announce the launch of a new pilot scheme called ‘Leg
Up’ designed to support those entering the equine veterinary profession.
We catch up with Rachel Davis who has been training our coaches to find
out more.

provides a safe space for them to
do high quality thinking around
these challenges in the presence
of a trusted colleague – someone
who knows when to listen, when
to question and when to refer on.
This scheme aims to help newly
qualified vets develop the skills to
help themselves - navigating their
own professional journey, in their
own way, with maximum professional
growth and enjoyment.
We’ve worked with you over the
last six months to train our coaches,
what has happened and how has it
gone?
The trainees have worked really hard
in developing their coaching skills:
attending two full day workshops,
four online webinars and monthly
reflective discussion forums. During
this time, they have been learning
about the importance of presence,
connection, active listening and
incisive questions in coaching-style
conversations. They have also been
getting hands-on experience with a
volunteer equine vet.

scheme?
BEVA are running Leg Up as a pilot
for the first time. The scheme will
only be open to BEVA concessionary
members to see how much appetite
there is for this type of support
among vets and to make sure it
helps support those entering the
profession. BEVA are creating a page
on their website detailing all the
coaches’ profiles so you can browse
and self-select who you would like
to be your coach. Those interested
in joining the scheme should pick
three coaches they would prefer to
be coached by and then complete
the short application and email it to
legup@beva.org.uk.

“I can’t wait to hear what these ‘coal-face’ sports
horse clinicians have to say in a panel discussion
about how they ‘tweak and treat’ their patients.
People are understandably secretive about their
methods and this creates an air of mystery, but also
a fear of the unknown for those trying to learn in this
field. Linear learning from one mentor can lead to a
blinkered approach and so any opportunity for open

Equine
reproduction is
an ever-evolving
discipline. As well
as the basic aspects being important,
there is a need for colleagues already
experienced in the field to develop
and hone their skills. This course
is designed to offer that advanced
learning experience. A few select
topics have been chosen and will
form the basis of interactive lectures
in the morning, followed by “handson”
wet labs in the afternoon.
With the increase in interest
surrounding assisted reproductive
techniques, embryo transfer
including flushing, searching and
preparation for transfer is of interest
to many practitioners. Likewise,
due to new techniques, subfertile
stallions can still be included in AI
programmes. The course provides a
unique opportunity to study these
topics in a “working” environment
as the course is at one of the UK’s
largest embryo transfer and semen
freezing centres.
The course will also discuss the
relatively new techniques of Doppler
ultrasound, the less understood
stallion ultrasonography and
therapeutic approaches to reduce
early pregnancy failure.
Pioneering stem cell treatments for
mares with endometrosis will also be
reviewed and discussed.

Driving this Winter
Winter isn’t a fun time to drive: the roads are wet, winds batter you from
all directions and you’ll inevitably get stuck in more traffic than normal. To
keep any skidding and tyre squealing to the track, we’ve put together some
top tips for winter driving (we know it’s boring but we want our vets to stay
safe!)
During extreme weather motorists are
advised against driving altogether,
but for ambulatory vets this is simply
not an option. From a quick Google
search, much of the guidance is
geared towards driving in heavy
snow, a rare occurence in the UK.
The doom and gloom of Britain’s
weather is more likely to bring wind,
rain and dark nights. We collated
some simple tips to limit the misery
it brings.
Wind
• Take extra care when overtaking
others - particularly be aware
of sudden gusts of wind when
passing large vehicles such as
lorries.
• Hold the steering wheel firmly
- maintaining a constant grip of
the wheel will give you as much
control as possible.
Rain
• Reduce your speed - slowing
down lessens the risk of
aquaplaning.
• Use a low gear when driving
through flooded areas - keep
your engine revs up but don’t
rush to avoid flooding your
engine.
• Put your lights on - you will
improve your visibility to others
when driving in the rain or spray.
The Dark
• Check your lightbulbs - ensure
both your rear and head-lights
are functioning correctly.
• Clean your windows and
windscreen - condensation
can leave a hazy film on your
windscreen and windows which
will impair visibility.
• Pack supplies in case of
emergency - store a collapsible
shovel and reflective jackets in
your boot.

Equine Emergencies can take many different forms and come

This course covers the basics for performing a lameness
examination, performing the common nerve and joint blocks
as well as recognising and understanding the most common

of acute and chronic laminitis, PPID and an update on EMS will

What is the Defra / AHT / BEVA /
Disease Surveillance Scheme?
The Equine Quarterly Disease
Surveillance Reports collate equine
disease data arising from multiple
diagnostic laboratories and veterinary
practices throughout the United
Kingdom. This provides an exceptional
insight into equine disease
occurrence on a national scale. It
is produced by the Department for
Food, Environment and Rural Affairs
(Defra), the British Equine Veterinary
Association (BEVA), the Animal &
Plant Health Agency (APHA) and
the Animal Health Trust (AHT) on
a quarterly basis and is distributed
to an extensive list of national and
international recipients as well to all
BEVA members
How are you celebrating the 15th
year of the collaboration?
Colleagues from AHT will be at the
BEVA Members’ Lounge at BEVA
Congress 2019 to share what the
scheme has achieved so far and to
introduce the reports to new readers.
BEVA will also be awarding the AHT
with a certificate of appreciation in
recognition of the hard work they do
to keep the equine veterinary profession
informed about disease status.

the magnitude and
continuation of the

We’re making our CPD courses more
accessible to nurses in 2020
We’re excited to announce from
January 2020 we will be involving
nurses on more of our practical
courses. For example our PPE
imaging course includes a practical
day that will be suitable for nurses as
well as vets, technicians and interns.
We will also be providing reduced
rates for nurses who want to attend
the BEVA Equine Behavioural
Modification Day or the How to
Heal Wounds in Horses course in
Edinburgh.
