Hello Readers
Hello Readers...
Welcome to our wellbeing edition where you’ll
find tips to feel good, look good and reduce the
stress.
Simple pleasures and gestures, like a
complement, the sunshine maybe a bar of
chocolate, boost happiness and wellbeing more
than winning the lottery! Sleep, eating well
and exercise are also powerful in boosting the
feel good factor. And, as technology and the
pace of life take over, set aside time to sit and
contemplate.
essentiallylocal
Heritage Open Days
This September, find out more about the history
and culture of the area by going along to one of
the fantastic events being put on across Milton
Keynes and south Northants. The Village at War
event in Stoke Bruerne promises an exciting flypast,
weather permitting.
Talking of heritage, did you know that the
RSPCA is the unofficial number one teddy bear
rehoming centre in the UK? They currently have
spaces for a few teddies so if you have a furry
friend you would love someone else to care for,
drop them off at one of the local RSPCA shops.
What’s Inside
If you are striving to improve your life, don’t get
caught out by one of the horrendous scams
that preys on a desire to feel and look better. As
always, Claire Kendall, from Trading Standards
Milton Keynes, has supplied us with shocking
information about health care products, make
sure you read the article. Sometimes you can
feel better by changing what you eat and
research suggests you can eat yourself happy.
Even improving the layout of your home
can make you feel better but if you have any
concerns about your mental health, always
speak to your GP first.
In the meantime support our community
and make sure you keep your business
Feature
Could you be an RSPCA Fosterer?
RSPCA Milton Keynes and North Bucks are always
looking for people who are willing to look after
pregnant and nursing felines in their own homes.
Fostering is very important as many of the cats and
small mammals have suffered. Others are simply not
used to getting the attention they need and so the
one-to-one care that a foster family can give will help
to build their confidence.
Fostering can be great fun, it is very rewarding and
you’ll have played a key role in their second chance
for happiness when they are successfully rehomed.
None of the kittens featured are up for adoption
at the moment but you could support them by
donating wet or dry kitten food or small mammal
food to keep their tummies full while they grow.
Drop the food off at one of the local three RSPCA
Charity Shops in Newport Pagnell, Stony Stratford or
Bletchley.
Thank you for your support!
Getting Ticked Off
Long country walks can mean you bring home more
friends than just your dog. Ticks tend to latch onto
dogs and cats, commonly around the face, neck and
ears. Helen Wigley, head nurse at The Vet Centre,
says “If a tick is removed incorrectly it can lead to
minor skin infections that have to be treated or more
serious diseases such as Lyme’s disease. This is why
the use of effective preventative treatments are so
important. Pets travelling to the continent may also
be exposed to tick-borne diseases that are not found
in this country.”
Fleas are still around in the autumn and if they into
your home they’ll happily enjoy the warmth of the
central heating. Treat them before they set up house
and home!
If you would like to know more about how to
become a fosterer email Jenny on
fostering@mkrspca.org.uk
visit mkrspca or rspcamiltonkeynes.co.uk
Rays of Sunshine
Autumn sun can still produce harmful UV rays so if
you are planning outdoor activities with your dogs,
ensure you protect them. Canines are susceptible to
potential skin cancer painful burns and from the sun.
They also burn their paws from hot roads and paths.
If it's too hot for your own feet, then it's too hot for
your dog. Avoid going for walks during the middle
of hot days and make sure to test the temperature
of the paths you are walking on. Walk in the shade
or carry your dog if you need to cross hot paths and
roads.
For advise on preventative treatments for ticks, flees
& worms or the management of burns in animals
book an appointment with one of the nurses at Maids
Moreton or Cherry Lane.
Dental tourism in Europe has
boomed in recent years. As places
like Hungary become known for
low-cost dental treatment, the
British have been travelling in their
thousands for what has become
known as ‘sun and surgery treatment.’
What most people don’t realise
is that implants and bone
augmentation need on-going
treatment over a period of some
months, and a quick visit abroad will
not be very satisfactory or effective
long term.
Treatment is now available here
in Milton Keynes!
The Power of the Mind
Staying positive is often easier said than done, especially as the
summer draws to an end and days get shorter and colder. Scientific
evidence now supports the idea that the winter blues do exist. There
are some simple steps to help keep your mental wellbeing in check.
IS YOUR MIND TOO FULL?
Life is busier than ever. Mindfulness
encourages you to consider your thoughts
and feelings. It reconnects your body with
the sensations it experiences and helps you
to become more aware of signs of stress.
TOP TIP
You do have time
- take a 15 minute
lunch break away
from your work!
KEEP MOVING
Pilates and yoga offer low impact and low
intensity exercise to improve stability and
flexibility. Pilates also builds strength. If you
don’t like exercise try ultra-short bursts of
HIIT (high intensity interval training) as it
increases aerobic fitness and strength and
reduces body fat to help you stay healthy.
There are exercise regimes to suit everyone
and it’s great for clearing the mind.
PAMPER YOURSELF
A study has shown that in the UK
we spend more time per week in
our main jobs than most other
European countries. That’s less
family and you time. Set aside a
few hours each week to pamper
yourself – a massage, a beauty
treatment, session at the gym, art
class or reading.
TAKE CONTROL, GET ORGANISED
Taking control is empowering therefore if your
life is busy get organised. List jobs you have
to do, want to do and the ones that someone
else can do. Prioritise the important ones and
leave the non-urgent not important ones!
Create a family calendar to include the jobs,
activities and meal plan. Allocate the jobs and
give yourself time.
FACE YOUR FEARS
Anxiety is normal and can even
bring benefits. Seek help from
your GP if your physical or
thought-related responses like
concentration and sleep, heart
palpitations or fear are having a
major impact on your life. Panic
or post-traumatic stress disorder,
diagnosis to get the right help.
Food For Thought and Wellbeing
Mental health is complex - genetics, our environment and so many other
factors affect it. There is, however, mounting evidence to support the idea that
your mental health also benefits from a healthy diet. Mediterranean diets are
already known to have a positive impact on people with physical conditions
like cancer and diabetes and now it’s believed it could make us happier too.
NOT SUCH A COMFORT
Who doesn’t give in to the odd craving for
a bar of chocolate? Deserving it quickly
slips into guilt and then a drop in mood
but Dr Michael Mosley believes you can
eat yourself happy. Start by reducing the
sugar eating microbes in your gut by saying
no to the manufactured sweet stuff, the
microbes will then die off and your cravings
will reduce. He believes our mood and
behaviours are affected by what we eat and
a Mediterranean diet will creates a biome
that makes us feel better.
TOP TIP
Cut the processed
foods and increase your
fruit, nuts, vegetables,
pulses and fish.
SLOW RELEASE FOR A BETTER
MOOD
Researchers have even found a relationship
between lower fruit and veg consumption
and distress levels. Learn to go healthier
and regulate your stress by eating regularly
and choosing slow release
foods like brown rice and pasta
and wholemeal bread. This is
said to help mood, energy and
clarity of thought. Australian
Professor, Felice Jacka believes
that nutrition has a key role in
helping many mental health
conditions like PTSD, depression
and anxiety.
TOP TIP
Drink water to
improve concentration,
think more clearly
and reduce risk of
constipation.
FARMING GETS FRUITY!
Jenny and Chris Letts are true local entrepreneurs
who are already known for the fantastic Christmas
Trees they grow – we wouldn’t go anywhere else!
And now, their other business The Fruity Farmer is
gaining a reputation for their delicious seasonal fruit
liqueurs. These liqueurs are made predominately
from fruits that grow in their hedgerows and
garden fruits on their land Choose from their gins,
raspberry vodka, limoncello, whisky, and, of course,
Christmas wouldn’t be the same without a tipple of
their Cherry Brandy!
They are now also producing their own Rapeseed
Oil from oilseed rape harvested on the farm. Once
harvested, it's crushed and left to settle for around
6 weeks before being bottled – it’s a pure crush,
nothing added. The left-over residue from crushing
is fed to the sheep on the farm as a high protein
feed. Rapeseed offers some incredible health
benefits – it’s low in saturated fats, about half the fat
of olive oil and high in Omega 3. The cold-pressed
production makes it ideal for cooking, baking or
salads and as we lead up to Christmas you can’t
beat it for roasting potatoes!
Bottles sell £5 for 500ml from local farmers markets.
Caring for Customers
The food sector produces
0.4 million tonnes of
avoidable food waste
every year. This includes
unsold meals as well as
waste from preparation
and plates. James
Swansborough-Smith from
ARTea Room was shocked
to hear the figures.
This led him to make the
decision to do even more to minimise his waste. He
reviewed all aspects of his business including food
waste from preparation and plates, what was being
recycled and could be recycled, to where and how
he uses plastics. A great believer in well-being and
delivering quality food, James also reviewed his
menu to offer more healthy options. The results have
been amazing, not only has James seen real business
Leisure
benefits but now he produces
very little waste that is not
recycled or re-used. All staff are trained to separate the
recycling and use the composting wheelie bin where
appropriate. James has chosen glass bottles over
plastics and these are recycled or turned into new
items and sold for charity.
The ARTea Room was also awarded ‘Silver’ in the
South Northants Eat Out, Eat Healthy Awards.
Happily, you will still find the same great tasty
dishes on the menu and of course, our well-being
would definitely be affected if we could no longer
enjoy those delicious Cream Teas!
The Price of Health and Beauty
Health and beauty products can be purchased from
retailers from all over the world. Trading Standards
says don’t get caught out by fake, useless and unsafe
health and cosmetic products.
Health products can only display claims about
their benefits that can be proven. Beware if you
have received a catalogue through the post selling
cosmetics, vitamins etc. at prices well below the
normal retail price. The items may not be the quality
you would expect and claims regarding the benefits
appear dubious. The company may suck you in by
offering to enter you into a prize draw and Trading
Standards says this is a form of postal scam. Return
the catalogue to the sender, recycle it or report it to
Citizens Advice.
Fake cosmetics reports show that products may
not meet the safety requirements that legitimate
manufacturers of cosmetics have to adhere to.
Analysis has found they can contain arsenic, mercury,
lead and a host of other nasties that you don’t want to
put on your skin.
They can cause irritation, rashes, eye infections,
chemical burns and more - protect yourself by using
suppliers you have confidence in.
Always remember that if the price seems too good to
be true, it probably is.
If you have any suspicions about your product
(packaging seems wrong, spelling mistakes on the
box etc.) report it and think twice about using it.
Royal Recognition for The Old Bath House Team
The Old Bath House and Community Centre team celebrated the Queens
Award for Voluntary Service, the highest award a voluntary group can
receive in the UK. Deputy Lord Lieutenant, Francesca Skelton attended
the open day event ‘Taste Of...' and honoured volunteers with her kind
words and commemorative QAVS badges.
Following a royal invitation to the Buckingham Palace Garden Party, the
Lord Lieutenant presented the award to recognise the contribution of
over 40 volunteers and supporters who maintain the community centre
and its projects. The dedicated team give their time, skills and expertise
to create a lively community hub. Projects such as MK Community Fridge,
a Pop-up Cafe and Family Cook-along sessions have earned The Old Bath
House recognition for ‘Serving the community through activities and
initiatives that promote wellbeing and bring people together’.
"We are delighted that our dedicated team have received this prestigious award. The Old Bath House is a wellloved
venue and this award is recognition of the great work our team contributes to make it such a beneficial
resource to Wolverton and all of Milton Keynes", Chris Bridgman.
The event raised £396.66 for Emily's Star through taster sessions, a mini market, raffle, pop-up cafe and lots of
colourful family fun and music.
In this edition our writers have been learning about
mindfulness and well-being. I don’t remember
experiencing the stresses that today’s children have
- no SATS or internet risks. It’s easy to understand
why more children suffer from mental health
problems like stress and anxiety. These young
people have embraced the benefits of staying
calm and quiet with mindfulness. We hope this will
inspire you and your child to be mindful.
Yoga and Mindfulness
While we were following a
meditation course online, I felt like
nothing could stop me from being
this happy for the rest of my life. I
was so calm and quiet that I could
hear sounds from outside that I
wasn’t able to before and I was on
the verge of sleep countless times.
When a different course was led by
a teacher at my school, Miss Hopkinson, it was a very
different experience than the one we found online
however equally as effective. She asked us all how we
were all feeling, what we had had for breakfast and she
told us about her day too. We used yoga mats for doing
positions that we were led through and we also had
some time to rest by ourselves. After both experiences,
I felt happy for the rest of the day. I would recommend
daily meditation and certainly get yourself signed up to
a yoga class or even use videos online to help you.
You really will feel the benefits!
WRINKLES
If you have fine lines, wrinkles, scars, birthmarks or other
skin marks on your face or body the intense pulse light
(IPL) restores the condition of your skin. It sends short
bursts of high intensity light into your skin to stimulate
collagen and volumise it.
Once loved tattoos causing distress? Fear not they can
also be safely removed. Treatment gradually fades without
affecting the surrounding tissue. Acne is equally distressing
but this treatment has the ability to kill the bacteria that
cause the outbreak as well as removing the pitted scarring.
It also provides a long term and for some a permanent
solution to unwanted body hair.
IPL is truly an all-round treatment when it comes to
helping to rid your body of unsightly hairs and blemishes.
If you’d like the most up-to-date information and the latest
Living Roof at Chelsea
It was very exciting to hear the news that Wolverton based Bridgman &
Bridgman helped to create and install a living green roof for an award
winning garden at the 2019 RHS Chelsea Flower Show. Marshall Plc
selected them to work on their Main Avenue show garden building
and Bridgmans grew a special batch of vegetation at their Wavendon
nursery. Marshalls Plc, a manufacturer of natural stone and concrete
hard landscaping products, were awarded a 5-star gold award at the
show. Congratulations to Chris and team!
Team Elanele Take
Huge Steps
Team Elanele left their beauty salon behind to walk
the 10km MK Midnight Moo in July. Along the way
they each walked over 13,000 steps in 2 hours and 15
minutes and raised nearly £1000 for Willen Hospice.
Not one member of the team had undertaken
anything like this
before. For owner
Lyn this was an extra
massive achievement
as she lives with the
challenge of multiple
sclerosis. Fantastic
Staying Sociable
Social media is great for social support –
giving the sense of community that for
many has improved well-being. Others
have felt bullied and isolated, unworthy
as they don’t conform to the perfect
image.
Whatever your views, communication
through social media has changed
the world forever. It has had
positive influence in developing and
maintaining social circles - keeping up
with friends far and wide, getting instant advice, finding romance and
locating missing people.
However, as face-to-face contact, from toddler to adult, is substituted
for games and social media, social and emotional development could
be compromised. Parents talk of addictive behaviour, moodiness, anger
and an inability to self-regulate particularly with games like Fortnite.
Others believe their children can’t communicate or maintain eye
contact with adults or peers. There is also internet overload when you
don’t know which way to turn, who or what to believe.
The speed of development means things may need to settle
before we find the happy medium. Whatever the reasons, it’s so
important to make sure technology does not take over your wellbeing.
Can’t Put It Down
Do you recognise that constant
temptation to check your social
media and messages, wherever
you are and whoever you are with.
This techno-interference often
has a negative effect on social
interactions.
Researchers at the University of
Arizona believe that devices make
it easy to have constant access
to people, fostering trust and
co-operation that makes it easier
to share personal information and
respond to others. However, it results in a divided attention that causes
conflict in relationships.
Is technology and the virtual world having a powerful pull on you
and affecting your well-being and family? If it is, then take action.
We Are All Rubbish Investors...
If you are reading this you’ve probably made a bad investment choice at
some point in your life. I know I have.
Don’t get disheartened or let past mistakes leave you with little
confidence in investing - we are programmed to be rubbish investors. It’s
not because we are silly with money, it’s because we are wired to go with
the safety of the crowd.
During caveman times you’d be more likely to eaten if alone so if you
came across a tiger you’d run rather than stick it out and see what
happened. These characteristics are still inside us today.
When the stock market falls sharply the media is consumed with terrible
stories about ‘meltdown in the markets’, ‘billions wiped off shares’ and
‘financial armageddon’. Hearing these things means our natural instincts
kick in, we follow the crowd and run. If everyone else is selling we must
too.
To stop yourself from making bad investment choices follow the rules:
1. A plan - A long term list of goals and objectives that determine what
you are investing for.
2. The right investment
strategy to begin with - in
line with your plan.
3. An independent force to
stop you making bad choices
when the time comes.
The phrase “my business is my pension” is one I hear quite often from business owners
and I get it. It takes a lot of sacrifice, both mentally and physically, to build your own
business and also a lot of personal expense.
Never rely solely on your business to provide for your retirement as that is a massive
risk. You could end up losing the business you built and your retirement too.
The problems with relying on your business as a pension:
1. Not able to sell your business at the time you want to
2. Big tax bill when you do sell
3. Need to continue working and/or face ongoing liability after you’ve sold
4. Deciding what to do with the money when you do sell
5. Business fails and you end up with nothing
A separate savings/investment portfolio is a good back up plan that can secure your financial future without
having to rely on selling your business. This means saving into Pensions, ISAs and other tax efficient investment
vehicles. It’s a way of getting money out of your business now, tax efficiently and easier for your family to inherit.
Professional
Being an executor – how hard can it
really be with a ‘simple’ estate?
I’ve spoken with many people, both in and outside
of work, who’ve been appointed as an executor
in a Will and have decided to deal with Probate
and the estate themselves. Whilst there is nothing
to stop people from doing this, I come across so
many misconceptions about the process and costs
involved, it can be quite alarming!
Whether a deceased’s estate is ‘simple’ or not; whether
their Will seems on the face of things to be valid or not;
whether a person is confident with paperwork or not,
there can be serious personal consequences for anyone
acting as an executor who gets it wrong. By personal
consequences, I mean the executor can be liable from
their own pocket, and not the estate funds, for mistakes
they have made.
I would always advise, regardless of what the assets
are or how much they amount to, that you get legal
assistance if you’re acting as executor, if not for the
whole administration then for some input at some
stage, for your own protection in your role. The
seriousness of the role should not be underestimated.
It is true that professionals dealing with estates will
charge a fee for their services. Neves’ fees range from a
fixed fee for less than £100 for an initial advice meeting,
to a fixed fee in the hundreds of pounds for getting
the Grant of Probate, to our hourly rate stretching
into the thousands for fully administering a complex
taxable estate. As you’ll agree, there’s a real range
of costs, all dependent on the level of support you
think you require. It’s worth bearing in mind that the
consequences of lay executors failing to deal with the
administration properly could personally cost them
tens of thousands of pounds, if not much more, and far
in excess of any legal fees they would have paid for a
professional service.
The team here in Milton Keynes are always happy to
have an initial conversation with you; we appreciate
it can be very stressful dealing with a friend or family
member’s affairs after they’ve died, please be assured
that any matter will be handled with sensitivity.
Get in touch with Jennifer and her team on 01908
A Restful Home
Broken-plan living has evolved from open-plan, it’s aim is to achieve a
light, airy home. Careful design should draw light in and make rooms
feel spacious and connected while maintaining a degree of separation.
Furniture, colours and accessories add the energy and calm.
IMAGINE BROKEN-PLANS
Think zones, who is using the space and how they’re
likely to use it now and in the future. Temporarily closing
spaces gives flexibility and privacy – try sliding or bi-fold
doors possibly glazed, half-walls, screens, widening doors
and even bookcases. A breakfast bar or island unit in your
kitchen will give you a functional divide and a place to eat
or work.
TOP TIP
Keep wall colours
light and add colour
with accessories.
AWAY WITH YOU
Before you knock a load bearing wall, it
must be replaced with a structural beam
that will cater for the load that the wall was
designed to support. It will also need to be
protected against fire with a resistance of up
to 30 minutes.
Be sure to notify
Building Control
about all work
of this nature.
Take heating
the space
and manage
additional noise
into account
when planning
the space.
THE SKY IS THE LIMIT
Let the light, sun and moon reach around your home
with carefully placed skylights.
TOP TIP
Start broken-plan
design at the kitchen
using structure to
create functional
space.
THE HUB
The kitchen is the hub of
family living and should
be a sociable space. Doors
will hide the clutter and a
breakfast bar or island give
a friendly space for pals. You
don’t need to replace the
whole kitchen, keep costs
down by simply updating
your doors.
To advertise please call 01908 380777
DÉCOR AND FURNITURE
Where you place your furniture, as
well as your choice of style, are key
ingredients to the success of brokenplan
living. Future proof your furniture
and choose storage that you can use
differently as your needs change. Indoor
plants are essential for
their touch and smell as
they can reduce stress and
anxiety.
Lavender in your
bedroom can help you to
sleep better.
Extending
is Easier
Temporary rules that allowed
homeowners to build bigger
extensions without need to
ask for permission first were
made permanent this year.
Councils will now have limited
opportunity to consider the
impact on the environment. Seek
advice and do not build anything
unless you are certain you have
the correct permissions in place.
Basic guidelines:
1. Extension sizes – homeowners
of terraced or semi-detached
houses can build single-storey
rear extensions of up to six metres
and eight metres for detached
homes. An extension must be no
more than half the area of the land
around the original house.
2. Building regulations – all
building works must meet
building regulations and safety
standards.
3. Internal remodelling – planning
permission is not required
but you will need building
regulation approval on structural
and electrical works. Check
requirements for listed buildings.
4. Windows – planning permission
to move or add windows is
required only if conditions
were attached to the original
permission. Double glazing can
be installed under permitted
development unless the windows
or doors are bigger or your
building is listed. Upstairs windows
or doors on side elevations must
be glazed with obscured glass and
fixed into a non-opening frame.
The story begins 20 years ago when Susan
from Moorgate Farm and her husband
embarked on rearing KellyBronze Christmas
turkeys - shop bought ones didn’t meet their
high standards. Five years later, her husband
received the crushing news that he had
Huntingdon’s Disease.
The family were devastated, faced challenges
and traumas hard to comprehend but
throughout Susan has remained positive, in
part thanks to the turkeys. Whatever your
situation Susan believes one thing will help
you survive, in her case it was her love and
passion of being with her turkeys . Please
support her by buying a calendar - all profits
go to Huntingdon’s Disease Association
research.
Huntingdon’s Disease has no cure, movement,
mind and behaviour progressively worsen and
there is a 50% chance that the faulty gene will
be passed on to a child.
Be Mindful with your Garden
Gardens offer the perfect work out, burning 180 calories an hour and they have
huge mental health benefits - reducing stress, depression and anxiety. Take
time to sit back and enjoy the remains of the autumn sun and evening moon in
your garden haven.
RELAX YOUR SENSES
Create a relaxing space in your garden to
that stimulate you with aromas, colours and
gentle sounds. Glass work captures light and
KEEPING THE PEACE
Tranquillity is the essence of a peaceful
and stress-free garden. That doesn’t mean
completely noise-free but do consider the
impact your barking dogs, children and music
are having on your neighbour’s enjoyment of
their space.
TIMELY REWARDS
Autumn to spring is
the best time to call in
the landscapers to help
you design a well-being
garden. Landscapers are
quieter at this time of year,
it’s less disruptive and
plants are dormant. Think
about how you used your
garden over the summer
months - design now, reap
the rewards in the spring.
STONY STRATFORD IN BLOOM
SSIB volunteers organised a children’s hanging basket
workshop during the fantastic Stony Stratford Big Lunch.
They also assisted with the successful Stony Open
Gardens which raised over £15,000 for Willen Hospice.
Visitors enjoyed 32 varied and beautiful gardens and
Rachel North’s (from Castlethorpe Primary School) display
of children’s tray gardens .
Children from Russell Street Primary School and SSIB
volunteers visited to the wildlife area and pond at the
north end of the High Street. The children also took part
in the SSIB Horticultural Photography Competition with
pictures displayed in the library.
The Community Tidy day helped the town to look
beautiful for the Britain in Bloom judges on 9 July.
Volunteers washed street furniture and weeded the
gutters and plant beds. The judges seemed very
impressed and results will be announced on 24
September. Photos with the judges and Artists in Bloom
competition winners Laura de Sherbin and Lucas Barton
took place at the Calcutta Brasseries.
WOLVERTON & GREENLEYS IN-BLOOM
The Wolverton and Greenleys In-Bloom floral displays in
shocking pink, white and lilac certainly brightened the
area. Twelve local businesses sponsored a floral dustbin,
local people looked after doorstep planters and Men in
Sheds installed more troughs on The Square.
Vegetable of
the Edition
Courgettes – love them or hate
them they are incredibly versatile and
easy to work with. They’re ready for
picking from July through to October.
They don’t need peeling and can
be used in sweet as well as savoury
dishes. Chocolate courgette cake is a
favourite for its moist texture.
As a member of squash family of
veg they are related to cucumber,
squash and melon. Their rich green
skins provide beautiful colour to your
plate but for some the benefits will
never overcome the taste. Dieters will
love their low calorie count and high
water contents. Believe it or not they
do have a few real health benefits -
good levels of potassium which helps
to control blood pressure and the
fibre in the skin is said to help with
irritable bowel as well as relieving
constipation. Their level of the B
vitamins also brings benefits.
Perhaps, if they are to have a
downside, they grow very quickly
and are tastier when smaller and
younger so don’t leave them on
the plant for days. They’ll store in
the fridge for about 2-3 days before
they develop a slightly bitter taste.
As far as cooking – do anything but
overboil them!
Volunteers helped to look after street sign planters while nursery
and small schoolchildren planted seeds and litter-picked with adults.
Sainsbury and Argos sent 36 very effective volunteers to help blitz
the town, they cleared, painted and planted. Vodaphone painted
the railings at 3 crossings along the Stratford Road. The small regular
team are delighted that so many people do their bit to keep the area
looking good but would love to have more helpers.
The judges who toured the area on judging day were
impressed with all the amazing efforts. Congratulations to the
teams – results will be announced in September.
Better Driving Makes
Better Roads
Speed limits are in place for a reason. Fast
aggressive driving that involves lots of
braking means you’ll potentially break the
speed limit resulting in a fine and points
on your licence. By slowing down you’ll
reduce the fuel consumption, wear and
tear on you brakes and will have less risk
of accidents too. Take note where limits
have reduced to 20mph in built up areas
– pedestrians accounted for 26% of road
deaths in 2017. Consider the weather and
conditions, including other cars on the
road before deciding to drive at the limit. The correct level of lighting
on your car for the conditions is also essential. Follow the two second
rule that means you’ll be at least two seconds behind the driver
in front when passing a fixed point. These safety tips will reduce
accidents as well as your stress.
Who’s to Blame?
The footage gained from dashcams while driving may protect you
in accident blame disputes where fault isn’t clear and in fraudulent
crash for cash claims. You don’t need permission to use one but
if poor fitting obscures your vision you could be breaking the law
and get fined. Taxi drivers and business people who drive with
passengers could risk a potential breach of privacy if they don’t
inform passengers of their use.
Footage may protect you but it can also be used against you. The
police can ask you to present your dashcam footage for review if
they believe you have committed an offence. It is also a serious
offence if you delete footage that is considered potential evidence.
The National Dash Cam Safety Portal offers members of the public
the opportunity to upload video and photographic evidence of
driving offences. The aim is to reduce road accidents and make
driving safer. Nextbase works
in partnership with regional
constabularies of England and
Wales.
Manage your
Road Stress
One in five drivers experience stress
when driving – fear, frustration,
physical symptoms are common.
Busier than ever roads and a plethora
of distractions in and out of the car
along with the everyday issues of life
contribute to the stress.
Reduce your stress:
• Plan your journey
• Avoid peak time travelling
• Leave at least 10-15 minutes earlier
• Turn off your phone and don’t
change music
• Invest in a SAT NAV and keep it up to
date
• Check parking options before you
arrive
• Use Street View on Google maps to
familiarise yourself with an area
• Respect the highway code and show
courtesy to other drivers
• Consider breakdown cover
• Take a snack to prevent hunger
• Do not drive when tired, exhausted
or hungry
• Listen to calm music
• Beware of other road users
If an aggressive driver confronts you,
stay calm and don’t show anger. Keep
your doors locked with the engine
running and go to the nearest police
station or busy area as quickly as
possible. Memorise the registration
number, colour, make and model of
the car. Report it.
