CHAIRMAN’S REPORT
F
irstly, I would like to thank those who helped with the Prize Giving night, especially
Denis and Anne Mc Donald who cooked Bangers & Mash for us with onion gravy
to die for. You will find the winners in this Newsletter.
By the time you read this, the National Daffodil Rally for Cancer will be a memory: I think a
good one. Thank you to all those who participated. This event is impossible to organise
without willing hands. Our collaboration with Waitemata has been harmonious and fun. All
the details are in the Club Captain’s Report, but this has been the best year yet. During the
meeting at Greymouth, the executive agreed to continue supporting the Cancer Society for
another 3 years.
I have just returned from the Club AGM in Greymouth. I panicked about snow—but all was
well. The coach from Christchurch through Arthur’s Pass was wet and gloomy on the way
to Greymouth but sunny and beautiful on the return, with fresh snow down to road level
as we came down towards Canterbury Plains.
The AGM was welcomed by Tony Kokshoorn: many of us will know him from interviews
about Pike River and the problems of the West Coast economy. Then Andrew Anderson,
the original member and life member spoke about the future and getting youth involved.
He pointed out that they were the boy racers of their time. There were reports from all the
officers about their areas of responsibility.
The Registrar, Rod Brayshaw has been pushing for 12 month WoFs for our cars. However,
the recent publicity about newer cars that are not safe is causing NZTA rethink the current
3 year delay and the 12 month timescale for modern cars.
The result of election of Officers was announced. The 3 existing officers were re-elected:
Tony Bartlett, Ed Boyd and George Kear. There were no other elections because only the
current officers were nominated. Don Muller was reappointed Archivist. Diane Ross is not
continuing with her page ’Brass Notes’ in Beaded Wheels and they are looking for someone
to take over. She has done a sterling job; always interesting. Murray Toms and his wife
undertook a journey in their 1917 Dodge Roadster from Tauranga via the Forgotten Highway
to South Island to join the Prince Henry Tour, and then home. It took a month and
they covered 4,886 miles. For this they have been awarded the John L Goddard Trophy.
Our President, Diane Quarrie, presented an overview of some initial work to ‘Rebrand’ the
Club. Options were presented, but more work will be done and presented to the Executive
in March. One idea is a new badge with VCC as the identifier and ‘Driving our History’ as
CHAIRMAN’S REPORT—CONTINUED
the tagline. The final decision will be made at the next AGM. I will make sure you have the
chance to comment at the right time. More detail will be in the notes attached to the
Minutes of our September Committee Meeting.
I am going to update our membership list to send out to you all, so I may need to contact
you to check that all the information we have is correct. We do have up-to-date emails, but
maybe not the current list of your vehicles.
Until next month, Happy and Safe Motoring;
Anne
CLUB CAPTAIN’S REPORT
W
elcome to this month’s instalment of the Club Captain’s report. August kicked
off with another well-attended midweek cafe run. This time it was to the Bayside
Cafe in Snell’s Beach. Those who attended, reported it was excellent. The
club night on the 8th of August was also our annual prize-giving. A bangers and mash dinner
was enjoyed before the prizes were handed out. Congratulations to all who received
awards this year! Well done to Graham and Cindy Buchs for being the club’s winners of the
Winter Woolies Wander.
As to events coming up…
• The Daffodil Day Rally is happening on the 25th of August and is going to be a wonderful
showcase opportunity for the club. We have had encouraging responses from other
clubs, so if the weather plays ball, we could have quite a turnout this year! May the force
be with us!!
• September the 4th is the date for the next midweek cafe outing. This is going to be a
trip to the Wade Hotel in Silverdale, meeting there at 12:00.
The September Sunday Run is lining up to be a good one. On the 22nd of September we
will be travelling down to Ardmore Airport to visit Avspecs. This company specialises in restoring
vintage aircraft, particularly WWII aircraft. This is an opportunity to get a behindthe-scenes
look at a world-class aircraft restoration operation. Meet at the Clubhouse at
08:45 for the run to Ardmore.
Till next time...May all your spark plugs be firing in the right order,
Paul
PS:
Daffodil Day Rally Update. Starting at Smale’s Farm, there were 117 registrations of cars to
go on the run. About 200 vehicles ended up being on display at the wharf in Warkworth.
This was a larger number than we had last year and the money raised was substantially
greater. After all tallies were in, a figure of $2,943.90 was collected for the Cancer Society.
This was a wonderful result in spite of the weather. Thanks to all involved for making the
event the success that it was! There was an awesome variety of vehicles turning out, with
the Packard Super 8 taking out the ‘People's Choice’ award. Of the ten single marque clubs
that were represented, the Vespa Club has my admiration for making the run in those
squally showers. Thanks again to everyone for supporting this event.
CLUB CARS OF THE MONTH
LEE’S 1963 VANGUARD SIX
T
he Vanguard Six was purchased from Te Puke with a fresh Warrant of Fitness and
driven home. On the way we stopped to buy some engineering bits and the owner
of the business heard the car running and announced ‘Your tappets are too
tight’ as he had been apprenticed to a Standard garage. He was right and I adjusted the
tappets to his settings and also stopped an oil leak on the tappet cover. Next to check
were the spongy brakes: on inspection the front wheels have two leading shoes and the
lower one on each front wheel was never in contact so this got treated correctly. Obviously
the garage which issued the WoF didn’t know how to adjust them—so why was the Warrant
ever issued? Next was a full oil & grease.
The car purrs along really well and handles all the hilly terrain around here. I did look at an
overdrive for flat road cruising but I don’t do enough mileage to justify it so it is a very
original car. My Navigator now suffers from motion problems when reading under way so
sadly we don’t use the car any more. The five tyres are near new, the body is good with no
rust and the seats and interior would score about 9/10 so I am open to offers from anyone
who would like to own a go-anywhere car.
11

LEE’S 1951 AUSTIN A40 DEVON
T
he 1951 Austin A40 Devon was driven home and then the rebuild started with
rust removal and various dints being cleaned up, sand-blasted and primed prior
to being repainted with Duco grey paint. A second A40 was purchased and all the
better bits were cannibalised to produce mechanical excellence in this car.
The whole brake cylinder system was sleeved with stainless liners so there won’t be problems
in the future.
The engine was rebuilt with a ground crank and new bearings, the tappets were replaced
after the head was planed , and the radiator was replaced.
The gearbox was replaced due to it slipping out of gear, the result of a worn selector.
A set of new tyres completes the car—purchased on T.P: never again!
The seats are original leather and still in very good condition. Floor mats need an upgrade,
and maybe the headlining, and all is in original condition.
On the road the car is happy at 50 mph and has all original instruments working and ready
to do any rally anywhere.
MYSTERY MOTORS
W
hat car is this?
Last month’s Mystery Motor was the Battista by Automobili Pininfarina. After
decades of styling and building cars for a wide range of car companies (BMC,
Peugeot and Ferrari amongst others) Pininfarina wanted to build their own car and this is
the result. It is fully electric, with a range of 450 kms, and the specs are mind-boggling. An
electric motor at each wheel will provide a total of 1,400 kw and 2,300 nm of torque, giving
a top speed of 350 kph. Although not as fast as the Bugatti Veyron | Chiron in top
speed, its blistering acceleration to 100 kph in under 2 seconds is quicker than a F1 car and
it takes less than 12 seconds to reach 300.
The prominent air scoops are to feed cool
air to the motors and the brakes, and the
interior is a luxurious wonderland of
premium fabrics and electronic controls.
