inevitably wonder how we’re perceived in our beautiful

Local business 

New Tŷ Pawb Café Owners With A Whole New Concept 

No 22 are a communityorientated 

café in the 

building of Tŷ Pawb, 

bringing the ethos of 

community, that is helping 

each other without having 

to donate or think about it. 

Using our everyday eatingout 

habits, we are aiming 

to enable the community 

to ‘pay it forward’ through 

ordering from the café or 

by using our suspended 

board. The pay it forward 

scheme already enables us 

to provide food to children 

through the Fifa tournament 

we’ve held for a good 

cause at Tŷ Pawb. We’ve 

also held event funding 

the food and drink for the 

Wrexham Football Inclusion 

Celebration Party and we are 

currently issuing vouchers 

to Nightingale House to 

hand out to volunteers for 

scones and tea. 

With the introduction of 

our brand new ‘Random 

Act of Kindness’ card, we 

are hoping this will enable 

a more anonymous, less 

intrusive way of giving to 

people less fortunate than 

ourselves. This 

scheme, although 

we are starting 

it at No 22 in Tŷ 

Pawb, we hope will 

encourage other 

local businesses 

once we have 

piloted it, to engage 

with us and help 

in a way that’s not 

promotion-based. 

It’s a random act and it does 

not need cameras, photos, 

adverts or self-publicity to 

work. 

The Pay It Forward scheme 

enables us to benefit local 

organisations or people 

in need by us allocating 

one hot drink or one of our 

meals for every ten sold or 

the equivalent. We do need 

people to work with us so 

feel free to pop into the 

café and have a chat with 

us about our initiatives. We 

are merely trying invite the 

community to think more 

about each other and help 

in a positive way. 

We source wherever possible 

from local businesses and 

people in the local area so if 

you think you can help, use 

our scheme in anyway or 

know of an organisation that 

could benefit from the Pay It 

Forward scheme, please let 

us know. We also have our 

suspended coffees – we are 

a member of the Suspended 

Coffee Movement, and the 

Pay It Forward movement. 

No 22 is not about any 

individual; we are as much 

a part of the community as 

you.

Events 

Wrexham Food Festival 2019: The Biggest One Yet! 

This year’s event is set to be 

bigger and better with over 85 

local and regional food producers 

expected, chef demos from local 

restaurants, cookery classes, live 

music and a fireworks display on 

the Saturday evening. 

Speaking about some of the 

exhibitors that people can expect to 

see, food festival committee member 

Sam Regan told us: 

“It will be bigger than ever and we 

are delighted to say we have 11 start 

-up businesses attending, such as 

Doughnutology, Ffa Da Coffi, Gardd 

Gwyllt and Bao Revolution. They are 

all new over the last year and will be 

showcasing their products so we 

would encourage everyone to come 

and see their new offers and ideas. It 

is great to see Sabor De Amor, one 

of the start-up slots from last year 

now in town-centre premises and we 

look forward to seeing this year’s 

fledgling businesses flourish.” 

This year there are no advanced 

sales with wristbands being sold on 

at the entrance. Prices are remaining 

the same at £4 for adults and £2 for 

children; under-eights come in free. 

There is also a £10 ‘family ticket’ that 

covers two adults and three child 

wristbands – the wristbands allow reentry 

throughout the day. 

Committee member Alex Jones also 

reeled off a range of exhibitors: 

“For those who wish to drink 

responsibly during the day, Aber 

Falls Gin, Wood Brewery, Rosie’s 

Cider, Magic Dragon of Aqueduct Ale 

and of course Wrexham Lager will be 

attending amongst others. Wrexham 

Lager are also sponsoring the live 

entertainment again this year.

“The festival will have the huge 

marquee again containing sixty (ish) 

exhibitors, including Sabor de Amor, 

Riverside Spirits, Chilly Cow Ice 

Cream and Happy Hedgehog Foods, 

to name just a few. We also have a 

separate demo kitchen marquee with 

a chef theatre where you will be able 

to watch some of the region’s best 

chefs educate and entertain 

throughout the weekend. We don’t 

do celebrity chefs. The opportunity to 

showcase local talent far outweighs 

anything a celeb could offer and they 

are our local celebs to celebrate!” 

Some free parking will be available at 

town centre car parks that are owned 

by the council. This does not include 

the Tŷ Pawb multi-storey car park. 

Please note free parking only starts 

after 10am. Anyone who wishes to 

park before 10am will be expected to 

pay to park as per the car 

park’s usual charges and the 

council say this will be strictly 

enforced. 

Andy Gallanders from Bank St 

Social is again organising the 

live events programme, “On the 

Saturday, the Wrexham Lager 

stage (bandstand) will host a 

full line-up of local musicians 

with superb headliners Rhythm 

Train. The Coverlovers are 

headlining on Sunday. 

Andy added, “It’s been a privilege to 

be involved with curating the 

entertainment for Wrexham Food 

Festival for the second year running. 

The addition of free parking is not 

only great for the festival, but a huge 

boost for the whole of the town and 

one we encourage businesses in the 

town to take advantage of!”

Meet Ruth Rees from Martin Rees Jeweller Pawnbroker 

Read about their long-standing business success and varied personal interests 

Martin and I have been 

jewellers since the 1970s. 

Martin learned the trade 

working at Nigel Hughes’ shop 

in Chester and then we started 

out trading on antique markets 

at weekends. We also sold 

old postcards and stamps (I 

thought the stamps were really 

boring though!). Subsequently, 

we shared a shop on Town 

Hill, took over the whole shop 

a year or two later and finally 

made the move to Chester 

Street in 1985. We decided on 

Wrexham because it’s been 

our hometown since we were 

married back in 1976.

passions have been travel 

and riding big rollercoasters in 

theme parks although Martin’s 

health issues have cramped 

our style on both recently. We 

managed to enjoy two months 

in Singapore earlier this year 

and we still spend time at 

Alton Towers, Thorpe Park and 

the other Merlin attractions, 

making good use of our annual 

passes.

Getting Your Garden Autumn-Ready 

How to keep your garden happy and healthy in September by Allan Longshadow, Wordworx 

With summer drawing to an end and autumn fast approaching, now is the time to get your garden in order for 

the months ahead. 

Order in the borders 

As the evenings begin to draw in, the 

bedding plants adorning your borders 

will quickly die off en-masse. Unless 

you have hardy plants, you’ll want to 

dig them up, get your beds looking 

tidy and spread some compost over 

them to replenish the nutrients for 

next year. 

Tend to the Tiles 

Take the time to give tiled paths and 

patios a thorough surface cleaning 

and a good weeding between the 

gaps to help keep them at their best. 

It will also help to prevent them from 

becoming slippery. 

Get to grips with grass 

Give your lawn a good trim before the 

weather gets too cold and wet, and 

apply a good quality lawn treatment 

to restore sparse patches and kill 

back any weeds and moss growth. 

It’s also a good idea to add fertiliser 

now, to ensure healthy growth come 

spring. 

Prepare your pond 

A top tip if you have a pond in your 

garden - get some pond netting from 

a local garden centre and cover it 

before the leaves begin to fall. It will 

save you a huge amount of effort 

later. Hold it down with rocks or 

heavy planters. 

House your herbs 

Potted herbs smell lovely in the 

garden - and bringing them into 

shelter under a porch or other semienclosed 

space will keep them going 

for longer. 

Top Tip 

If you don’t have a porch or other 

shelter, a plastic greenhouse is an 

inexpensive way to protect longer 

lasting plants. Locate it in the most

Playwork Pilot Scheme Tackles Holiday Hunger 

Adventure playgrounds across 

Wrexham have opened their 

gates for longer this summer 

thanks to an exciting new 

pilot project to address food 

poverty for children in Wales. 

At least 65,000 children in 

Wales were at risk of going 

hungry through the school 

holidays according to the 

Bevan Foundation with over 

3,000 of those children in 

Wrexham alone. The ‘Holiday 

Hunger Playwork Pilot’ was 

backed by Welsh Government 

funding and meant adventure 

playgrounds at The Venture, 

Gwenfro Valley and The Land 

were able to provide healthy 

meals for children who came 

to play. 

Gareth Stacey, Assistant Team 

Lead of the WCBC Play & 

Youth Support Team (PYST), 

who coordinated the pilot, 

said the funding, “allowed us

Singing Streets, returns to 

the town centre on Saturday, 

September 28th. 

This is the fourth year it has 

taken place. The event is 

organised by local MP Ian Lucas

Council and John Jones Quality 

Acoustics. More than 30 choirs 

have signed up to take part 

and they will perform for the 

public free of charge at various 

locations around the town 

centre throughout the day.

for an extra two days thanks 

to the pilot. Sarah Roberts, a 

parent, volunteer and member 

of the Gwenfro Valley Steering 

Group, said “the extra 

sessions on the playground 

have been incredible for these 

kids. This time last year, we 

nearly closed and we’ve 

wanted the playground open 

longer ever since. Here we 

are, a year down the line and 

we’re open two extra days 

and making sure these kids 

are getting fed through the 

holidays.”. 

Wrexham MP Mr Lucas 

has been working hard in 

Westminster since 2014 to 

highlight the issue of holiday 

hunger in Wrexham and other 

parts of the UK. He joined his 

wife Norah and local volunteer 

Sandra Haskey to help 

prepare meals for the project 

on Thursday, August 1st.

Maria Hinfelaar added: “Singing 

Streets has been a huge

Porth y Byddar (The Door of the Deaf) by Manon Eames 

Book review by John Morris 

This excellent documentary 

novel brings to life one of the 

critical events in Welsh history: 

the creation of the Tryweryn 

Dam to provide water for 

Liverpool Corporation by the 

drowning of the village of Cwm 

Celyn. 

The author sets the scene 

following a brilliant introduction 

when she notes that all the 

homesteads and families are 

soundly asleep on the Monday 

night a week before Christmas 

in 1955 after which their lives will 

never be the same again. 

The memorable 

scenario in the chapel 

as one of the elders, 

Dafydd Roberts, 

reveals the plans to 

drown the village to the 

faithful congregation. 

He asks them to stay 

together and that 

with the promises of 

support from a range 

of agencies, he tells 

them that he and the 

other congregation 

leaders are confident 

that they can succeed 

in getting Liverpool 

Corporation to rethink 

their plans once they realise the 

consequences of their actions. 

One can picture how emotional 

Dafydd is as he addresses the 

congregation in his belief that his 

trust in his faith, love for his way 

of life and social justice will be on 

their side. 

She contrasts this with the 

New Year celebrations of 

two of the leading Liverpool 

councillors, Frank Cain and John 

Braddock, and the New Year 

1996 discussions of a group of 

students in Neuadd Pantycelyn. 

The author initiates an in-depth 

analysis of the problems facing

those who wish to challenge 

Liverpool Corporation. 

We read about the inept Welsh 

speakers who have forsaken the 

language and those who do not 

want to start a “commotion” and 

wish to challenge by acceptable 

constitutional methods. In 

contrast, she focuses on the 

group in the college who see the 

use of alternative unconstitutional 

action as the only way forward. 

Readers will become emotionally 

involved as the characters in 

the village of Capel Celyn and 

neighbouring 

areas prepare 

to protest on 

the march 

in Liverpool.

highlights the 

insensitive 

attitudes of 

the councillors 

in Liverpool 

as they pour 

scorn on the 

efforts of 

Gwynfor Evans 

in his attempts 

to change their 

plans to flood 

the village. 

The reader becomes emotionally 

involved as the author focuses 

on the efforts of first language 

Welsh speakers in their efforts 

to write letters, in English, to the 

officials at Liverpool Corporation, 

for them to gain insight and 

understanding of the feelings of 

the residents of Capel Celyn. 

The author brilliantly portrays 

the emotional stress suffered 

by the Capel Celyn residents 

as Elizabeth Riley, a girl from 

Capel Celyn who works with 

Liverpool Corporation, becomes 

the personal assistant to Mr 

Braddock. She is given the 

job of typing invitations to the 

Inauguration of the Reservoir 

Llyn Celyn on 21st October, 

1965. One of the other office 

assistants notices she is crying. 

She asks Elizabeth if she is 

alright to which Elizabeth replies: 

“Yes, just something in my eye”. 

I am sure that when they read 

this, many readers will shed a 

tear in common with Elizabeth at 

how the residents of Capel Celyn 

were treated. 

It is within the chapter on 

Tystiolaeth (Evidence) that 

the author drives home to the 

reader that protests by small 

communities against the actions 

of powerful companies or 

conurbations are doomed to 

failure without political change 

to back them up. Faith, love 

and connections are inadequate 

against political and multinational 

company power. 

Ms Eames has produced a 

powerful novel based on actual 

events which directly affected 

the lives of the residents of Capel 

Celyn. The resultant impact of 

the flooding of the valley and the 

disbursement of residents, many 

of whom had rented farms and 

houses from the Rhiwlas Estate, 

resulted in a massive attitude 

change by the Welsh people 

to political authority. Groups 

developed who were determined 

to take up the challenge to 

achieve parity for the Welsh 

language and the goal of 

devolution. The resultant growth 

in the use of the Welsh language 

in everyday life, schools and 

commerce undoubtedly resulted 

from the suffering of the residents 

of Capel Celyn and insensitive 

destruction of a Welsh-speaking 

community.

Local history 

Smiling Rosemarie On Top Of The World 

This month we learn about 

ROSEMARIE FRANKLAND, the girl 

from Rhosllannerchrugog whose 

journey to the very pinnacle of the 

beauty pageant world was followed by 

her struggle to adapt to a life in show 

business. 

Rosemarie Frankland, the Welsh beauty pageant 

contestant, won the 1961 Miss United Kingdom 

and Miss World titles before becoming an 

actress. Born in Rhosllannerchrugog in February 

1943, she was the child of a hospital cleaner 

and a factory foreman. She moved to Lancashire 

as a child and worked at a local branch of Marks 

and Spencer. 

All eyes were on Rosemarie Frankland as she was 

crowned Miss World in 1961 

She took part in many beauty pageants and 

won the titles of Miss Lancashire and Miss 

Lake District before her big break when she

won Miss Wales in 1961. Winning Miss Wales 

meant she qualified for Miss World and later 

that same year (as Miss United Kingdom), more 

than 10 million television viewers watched her 

become the first British woman and the seventh 

European to win the Miss World competition at 

the Lyceum Ballroom in London. She also was 

the first runner-up at Miss Universe 1961. 

Together with Gina Swainson, who won the Miss 

World title as Miss Bermuda in 1979, she is 

one of the two women who came closest to 

winning Miss Universe and Miss World, having 

been second at Miss Universe before winning 

Miss World. Helen Morgan who was also Miss 

Wales and Miss United Kingdom, achieved the 

same feat, but she resigned the Miss World 

title four days after being crowned. When Bob 

Hope crowned Rosemarie as Miss World, he 

commented that she was the most beautiful girl 

he had ever seen. 

Modelling work flooded in after she secured 

the Miss World title. She also auditioned for 

a number of Hollywood studios and she had 

an uncredited role in the 1964 Beatles’ film 

A Hard Day’s Night. At this time she married Ben 

Jones, a photographer who was 16 years her 

senior, but the marriage was unable to survive 

her hectic lifestyle and he filed for divorce six 

months later on the grounds of adultery.

Jones said “Rosemarie was star-struck and I 

don’t think she had the capacity to deal with it. 

For an 18-year-old behind the counter at Marks 

and Spencer to be thrown in the deep end of 

Miss World with no guidance and nobody to help 

her was too much. In the end it was a bit of a 

Marilyn Monroe story.” 

Her affair with Hope, which had started shortly 

after she won the Miss World title, began again 

in earnest. She moved into his Palm Springs 

home and appeared in his movie, I’ll Take 

Sweden in 1965. Hope took her on a tour of 

American forces in the Arctic, joking: “She’s so 

hot, we were in real danger of going through 

the ice.” 

Rosemarie in later years 

The film roles dried up and I’ll Take Swedenn 

was her last movie role. She had a short-lived 

stint as Hope’s personal assistant, but her 

relationship with him came to an end too as he 

refused to commit to her. 

In 1970, she married The Grass Roots singer/ 

guitarist, Warren Entner and went to live in Los 

Angeles. In 1976, she gave birth to their only 

child together, a daughter, Jessica. She and 

Warren divorced in 

1981. 

She was suffering 

from depression at 

the time of her death, 

purportedly from a 

drugs overdose. She 

was 57 when she 

died on December 

2, 2000 at Marina 

del Rey, Los Angeles 

County in California. 

She was cremated in the USA, but her ashes 

were moved back to her native Wales and were 

interred in Rhosllannerchrugog cemetery.

Techniquest Glyndŵr are renaming themselves and need your thoughts 

Techniquest Glyndŵr have 

revealed that alongside the 

purchase of and relocation 

to the former unoccupied TJ 

Hughes building in the centre 

of Wrexham, they will also 

be rebranding the Science 

Discovery Centre, including a 

change of name. 

Techniquest Glyndŵr has come 

under the ‘Techniquest’ banner 

since Queen Elizabeth II opened 

the centre in 2003 initially 

as ‘Techniquest@NEWI’ before 

changing to ‘Glyndŵr’ in 2009. 

The original Techniquest based 

in Cardiff has been partnered 

with the Wrexham-based science 

centre, but in 2020 that will 

decrease as the relocation to 

Henblas Square is complete. 

The rebranding is set to coincide 

with the move to the town centre 

and provide a fresh face in the 

community of Wrexham. 

The successful funding and 

purchase of the town centre 

building has already been 

announced this summer and this 

news completes a trio of major 

announcements by Techniquest 

Glyndŵr. 

Centre Manager Scot Owen said 

“This is yet more positive news 

for us and offers an opportunity 

to gain our own bespoke identity. 

It’s the most exciting time in our 

16-year history and to have the 

chance to cement our own ideas 

with regards to name, branding 

and all-round feel is a challenge 

we are thrilled to undertake. 

We now call on the local 

community to help us decide 

on these changes as we look 

to consult with all backgrounds 

to create a Science Discovery 

Centre for all. Feedback is now 

being taken via a public survey 

whilst focus groups have been set 

up to engage with the public and 

take their thoughts on all aspects

with their September Shout Outs! 

Here we are again to share more of our favourite local foodie favourites. It’s great to be able to 

share our recommendations with you guys, and support these local, independent businesses. 

It’s fantastic to see so many local people appreciating the many thriving establishments 

Wrexham and its surrounding areas have to offer. This month we’ve visited the Fat Boar in 

Wrexham Town Centre, the Cock o’Barton near Malpas and Aballu in Rossett.

offer (Tuesdays from 5pm) and we were totally 

impressed. Who could say no to a homemade 

steak burger topped with melted cheese and 

smoky candied bacon, washed down with a local 

ale? We’d recommend booking a table because 

even on a Tuesday evening, the restaurant and 

bar areas were packed out.

Social Work Student’s Placement Success Recognised 

At Houses Of Parliament Awards 

A placement with a prisoner 

support charity fitted so well for 

a Wrexham Glyndwr University 

Social Work student that he not 

only secured a job at its end, but 

ended up with a national award 

as well. 

Jamie Dixon from Penyffordd 

initially embarked on the placement 

with the Prison Advice Care Trust 

(Pact) as part of his studies on the 

Glyndwr’s BA (Hons) Social Work 

course. During his 80-day 

placement, he worked with the 

Trust and prisoners at HMP 

Berwyn, preparing the prisoners for 

the day they were released and 

helping them to return to life 

outside the prison. 

Jamie said: “I would help them sort 

out housing, benefits, food, liaison 

with council departments and 

things like that. The charity actually 

works out of the probation office in 

Wrexham and a lot of my time was 

spent in there.” 

Following his placement, Jamie 

was contacted by the charity and 

told he was one of a select group 

of people from up and down the 

UK who had been selected to 

receive a volunteering award. 

Jamie and the other volunteers 

were asked to come to a special

presentation at the House of 

Lords as part of an event 

celebrating Pact’s 120 th year 

helping people. 

He said: “After I heard I had been 

put forward for the award, my dad 

and I were invited 

down to the Houses 

of Parliament where 

the ceremony was 

being held. It was 

very interesting 

actually – we went 

down there the day 

Theresa May 

resigned and that 

was fascinating to watch in the 

House of Commons. Seeing those 

processes in Parliament is not 

something everyone gets to see. 

We were each given an award by 

David Gauke – the then Justice 

Secretary – and it was great to be 

recognised for the work I had done. 

Pact is a big charity and out of all 

the people in the country they 

could have given an award to, they 

picked just 13 of us.” 

Jamie is now working part time 

while he completes his studies at 

Glyndwr and is looking forward to 

applying his degree once he 

graduates and finds a career in 

social work. 

He added: “After the placement 

and the awards, I actually ended 

up getting a job with Pact – once 

again, working with prisoners from 

HMP Berwyn. That’s the kind of 

arena I’d like to work in once I 

graduate. My mum is a social 

worker and coming to Glyndwr to 

study to become one too seemed 

the next logical step for me.”

Wrexham Glyndwr University, Liz 

Lefroy, said: “Each Social Work 

student at Glyndwr is expected to 

apply the skills they learn with us 

on a placement. Jamie is a 

conscientious student who 

performed exceptionally well on his 

second year placement. He was 

given a challenging opportunity 

and he rose to that challenge. 

We work hard with our partner 

organisations: Wrexham, Flintshire 

and Denbighshire Councils, to 

provide students with placements 

which enable them to grow into the 

social work role and this turned out 

to be a particularly good fit.”

This month we take you on a mileand-a-half 

(2.8km) walk around 

the beautiful and diverse Marford 

Quarry. 

Marford Quarry is located 2.5 miles 

NE of Wrexham. Heading south 

into the village of Marford on the 

B5445, turn right onto Pant Lane in 

the village centre (immediately after 

the Red Lion pub). There is free 

parking at Maes y Pant car park, 

approximately 415m down Pant 

Lane (SJ 354 551; LL12 8HB).

Marford Quarry Walk

With over 1,000 recorded species, 

Marford Quarry is a wildlife haven 

and one of the best places in Wales 

for invertebrates. As its name 

suggests, the site was quarried for 

many years (supplying aggregate 

for the construction of the Mersey 

Tunnel) but, now that nature has 

truly reclaimed it for herself, insects 

thrive in the mix of post-industrial 

habitats and several rare species 

make their homes here. 

The reserve is especially important 

for a specialised group of 

invertebrates, 

aculeate 

Hymenoptera (bees, ants and 

wasps) with an astounding 171 

different species recorded (2018). 

Ants, in particular, are an important 

source of food for green 

woodpeckers and as you wander 

along the network of paths that 

criss-cross the quarry floor, listen 

out for their distinctive, cackling 

call. In spring and summer, the vivid 

colours of orchids and other 

wildflowers accompany the 

reserve’s leafy greens; whilst the 

flashes of colour from the 35 

butterfly species found here are 

sure to catch your eye.

You walk into an unexpected oasis 

of wilderness by following a treelined 

path to find rare plants like wild 

liquorice, special invertebrates, 

slow-worms and gorgeous 

butterflies such as the purple 

hairstreak. 

The route is easy-going; even 

suitable for all-terrain pushchairs. 

Turn left out of the car park onto 

Pant Lane and walk along the lefthand 

pavement until you see a 

finger post pointing left (shortly after 

crossing Quarry Brow). Follow this 

lovely leafy path, noticing the huge, 

smooth-barked beech trees among 

the sycamores. 

When you come to the junction in 

paths (after about 300m), take the 

right-hand path, passing a bench on 

the left and carrying straight on. 

Ignore other paths leading off the 

track. 

At the next fork, take the right-hand 

path, which climbs steeply uphill. 

Notice the change in vegetation to 

ash, hawthorn and birch as you gain 

height, whilst the atmosphere 

becomes drier and the soil sandier. 

If you wish to spot dragonflies and 

look for smooth newts, frogs and 

toads, dip down the left-hand path 

at the next junction to visit the pond 

– retrace your steps to return. 

The path carries on looping around 

the top of the reserve, skirting a 

fenced area. The fence prevents 

rabbits nibbling special plants such 

as bee orchid, pyramidal orchid and 

wild liquorice. In summer you smell 

wafts of evening primrose and hear 

the repetitive song of the chiffchaff. 

Continue along this path past a 

hedge of Lawson cypress with 


glimpses of open countryside 

between the trees. Look out for 

alder with their distinctive cones; 

and mature hawthorns with their red 

berries in autumn and white 

blossom in May. In summer, you 

hear the loud chirping of 

grasshoppers. Growing around the 

path is wood sage, which smells 

pungent if you crush the leaves.

The path loops around a second 

fenced area: in summer, see if you 

can spot the bubblegum-pink 

flowers of common centaury in the 

open area to the right of the path. 

Pass the circular benches on the 

right and take the mesh path leading 

left. 

Just before the next benches ahead 

on the right, turn left and left again 

– from here on in, you are starting to 

retrace your steps. Plenty of dead 

wood is left to rot on the reserve as 

habitat for invertebrates – see if you 

can spot the striking ruby-tailed 

wasp as you walk. 

Very soon you come to another 

junction of paths. Take the left-hand 

route, which returns you down the 

long straight path, the way you 

came in. Turn right out of the 

footpath onto Pant Lane to return to 

the car park.

Although your guided walk finishes 

here, you are also free to explore 

the paths of Maes y Pant. The 

highlight is the viewing area: to 

reach this, turn right past the Maes y 

Pant welcome sign and carry on 

along the track until you reach a set 

of steep steps on the right. Climb 

the steps for panoramic views over 

the trees and distant hills – on a 

clear day you can even see 

Liverpool, 25 miles away. As you 

retrace your steps to the car park, 

look out for green and great-spotted 

woodpeckers.

Groundwork North Wales Heritage Fun Day 

Groundwork North Wales have had a busy 

summer of exciting events taking place at 

Minera Lead Mines and at Venue in the Park, 

Alyn Waters with more to look forward to in 

September. 

This month sees two new events 

for the local and wider community 

at Minera with a Heritage Fun Day 

taking place on September 14th 

and an outdoor film-screening on 

September 21st. 

The fun day will feature guided tours of the site 

provided by Wrexham Museum, fun and games 

from Giggles and Games, face painting from Divine 

Designs and much more. The film screening is 

called ‘Movies at Minera’ and will be showing Shrek, 

the 2001 American cartoon comedy film loosely 

based on the 1990 fairytale picture book of the 

same name by William Steig. Tickets are available 

online and from the visitor centre itself. 

These events aim to show off the attraction’s 

fantastic natural landscape and inform participants 

about the area’s rich heritage.

Ady Jones Taekwondo School and Family Martial Arts Centre 

Seventh-Degree Black-Belt 

Master Ady Jones started 

Taekwondo when he was just 

11, started competing in 1992 

and went onto win numerous 

national and world titles and 

trained in the US and South 

Korea. He retired from the 

competitive circuit in 2007, but 

went back and won the men’s 

lightweight sparring title at the 

world championships in 2013. 

He started his business in 

Ruabon fitting classes in around 

his job at Kellogg’s. After a few 

years of juggling work 

commitments with the martial 

arts business, Ady took the 

decision to leave Kellogs in June 

2014 to concentrate full time on 

his teaching! 

He runs the business with his 

wife, Sarah, who used to work at 

MBNA in Chester before moving 

into the Taekwondo business 

with her husband in 2016. She’s 

no slouch when it comes to 

martial arts – she’s a seconddegree 

black belt herself. This 

theme runs in the family: Bertie, 

15, has held a first-degree black 

belt since he was 10 and even 

Poppy, 8, has a red belt! 

Amongst Ady’s trainees has

been Jade Jones, the 2012 and 

2016 Olympic gold medallist in 

the women’s 57kg category and 

the 2019 World champion. 

Ady’s classes run seven days a 

week with a full-time centre on 

Wrexham Industrial Estate and 

additional locations in Ruabon, 

Llay, Gresford and Rossett and 

with classes from ages two up to 

adult, there is a session for 

everyone!
