Welcome to the third issue of <strong>Love</strong> <strong>Wrexham</strong> <strong>Magazine</strong>.<br />

We were amazed by the many positive responses we got<br />

when we were delivering the second magazine and by how<br />

few there were left! This has encouraged us because we<br />

inevitably wonder how we’re perceived in our beautiful<br />

county. Our mission is to get out and about and ask people<br />

about the magazine as much as possible, but it’s still very<br />

New Tŷ Pawb Café Owners With A Whole New Concept<br />

No 22 are a communityorientated<br />

café in the<br />

building of Tŷ Pawb,<br />

bringing the ethos of<br />

community, that is helping<br />

each other without having<br />

to donate or think about it.<br />

Using our everyday eatingout<br />

habits, we are aiming<br />

to enable the community<br />

to ‘pay it forward’ through<br />

ordering from the café or<br />

by using our suspended<br />

board. The pay it forward<br />

scheme already enables us<br />

to provide food to children<br />

through the Fifa tournament<br />

we’ve held for a good<br />

cause at Tŷ Pawb. We’ve<br />

also held event funding<br />

the food and drink for the<br />

<strong>Wrexham</strong> Football Inclusion<br />

Celebration Party and we are<br />

currently issuing vouchers<br />

to Nightingale House to<br />

hand out to volunteers for<br />

scones and tea.<br />

With the introduction of<br />

our brand new ‘Random<br />

Act of Kindness’ card, we<br />

are hoping this will enable<br />

a more anonymous, less<br />

intrusive way of giving to<br />

people less fortunate than<br />

ourselves. This<br />

scheme, although<br />

we are starting<br />

it at No 22 in Tŷ<br />

Pawb, we hope will<br />

encourage other<br />

local businesses<br />

once we have<br />

piloted it, to engage<br />

with us and help<br />

in a way that’s not<br />

promotion-based.<br />

It’s a random act and it does<br />

not need cameras, photos,<br />

adverts or self-publicity to<br />

work.<br />

The Pay It Forward scheme<br />

enables us to benefit local<br />

organisations or people<br />

in need by us allocating<br />

one hot drink or one of our<br />

meals for every ten sold or<br />

the equivalent. We do need<br />

people to work with us so<br />

feel free to pop into the<br />

café and have a chat with<br />

us about our initiatives. We<br />

are merely trying invite the<br />

community to think more<br />

about each other and help<br />

in a positive way.<br />

We source wherever possible<br />

from local businesses and<br />

people in the local area so if<br />

you think you can help, use<br />

our scheme in anyway or<br />

know of an organisation that<br />

could benefit from the Pay It<br />

Forward scheme, please let<br />

us know. We also have our<br />

suspended coffees – we are<br />

a member of the Suspended<br />

Coffee Movement, and the<br />

Pay It Forward movement.<br />

No 22 is not about any<br />

individual; we are as much<br />

a part of the community as<br />

you.<br />

<strong>Wrexham</strong> Food Festival <strong>2019</strong>: The Biggest One Yet!<br />

This year’s event is set to be<br />

bigger and better with over 85<br />

local and regional food producers<br />

expected, chef demos from local<br />

restaurants, cookery classes, live<br />

music and a fireworks display on<br />

the Saturday evening.<br />

Speaking about some of the<br />

exhibitors that people can expect to<br />

see, food festival committee member<br />

Sam Regan told us:<br />

“It will be bigger than ever and we<br />

are delighted to say we have 11 start<br />

-up businesses attending, such as<br />

Doughnutology, Ffa Da Coffi, Gardd<br />

Gwyllt and Bao Revolution. They are<br />

all new over the last year and will be<br />

showcasing their products so we<br />

would encourage everyone to come<br />

and see their new offers and ideas. It<br />

is great to see Sabor De Amor, one<br />

of the start-up slots from last year<br />

now in town-centre premises and we<br />

look forward to seeing this year’s<br />

fledgling businesses flourish.”<br />

This year there are no advanced<br />

sales with wristbands being sold on<br />

at the entrance. Prices are remaining<br />

the same at £4 for adults and £2 for<br />

children; under-eights come in free.<br />

There is also a £10 ‘family ticket’ that<br />

covers two adults and three child<br />

wristbands – the wristbands allow reentry<br />

throughout the day.<br />

Committee member Alex Jones also<br />

reeled off a range of exhibitors:<br />

“For those who wish to drink<br />

responsibly during the day, Aber<br />

Falls Gin, Wood Brewery, Rosie’s<br />

Cider, Magic Dragon of Aqueduct Ale<br />

and of course <strong>Wrexham</strong> Lager will be<br />

attending amongst others. <strong>Wrexham</strong><br />

Lager are also sponsoring the live<br />

entertainment again this year.<br />

“The festival will have the huge<br />

marquee again containing sixty (ish)<br />

exhibitors, including Sabor de Amor,<br />

Riverside Spirits, Chilly Cow Ice<br />

Cream and Happy Hedgehog Foods,<br />

to name just a few. We also have a<br />

separate demo kitchen marquee with<br />

a chef theatre where you will be able<br />

to watch some of the region’s best<br />

chefs educate and entertain<br />

throughout the weekend. We don’t<br />

do celebrity chefs. The opportunity to<br />

showcase local talent far outweighs<br />

anything a celeb could offer and they<br />

are our local celebs to celebrate!”<br />

Some free parking will be available at<br />

town centre car parks that are owned<br />

by the council. This does not include<br />

the Tŷ Pawb multi-storey car park.<br />

Please note free parking only starts<br />

after 10am. Anyone who wishes to<br />

park before 10am will be expected to<br />

pay to park as per the car<br />

park’s usual charges and the<br />

council say this will be strictly<br />

enforced.<br />

Andy Gallanders from Bank St<br />

Social is again organising the<br />

live events programme, “On the<br />

Saturday, the <strong>Wrexham</strong> Lager<br />

stage (bandstand) will host a<br />

full line-up of local musicians<br />

with superb headliners Rhythm<br />

Train. The Coverlovers are<br />

headlining on Sunday.<br />

Andy added, “It’s been a privilege to<br />

be involved with curating the<br />

entertainment for <strong>Wrexham</strong> Food<br />

Festival for the second year running.<br />

The addition of free parking is not<br />

only great for the festival, but a huge<br />

boost for the whole of the town and<br />

one we encourage businesses in the<br />

town to take advantage of!”<br />

Meet Ruth Rees from Martin Rees Jeweller Pawnbroker<br />

Read about their long-standing business success and varied personal interests<br />

Martin and I have been<br />

jewellers since the 1970s.<br />

Martin learned the trade<br />

working at Nigel Hughes’ shop<br />

in Chester and then we started<br />

out trading on antique markets<br />

at weekends. We also sold<br />

old postcards and stamps (I<br />

thought the stamps were really<br />

boring though!). Subsequently,<br />

we shared a shop on Town<br />

Hill, took over the whole shop<br />

a year or two later and finally<br />

made the move to Chester<br />

Street in 1985. We decided on<br />

<strong>Wrexham</strong> because it’s been<br />

our hometown since we were<br />

married back in 1976.<br />

“Besides jewellery, our ruling<br />

With summer drawing to an end and autumn fast approaching, now is the time to get your garden in order for<br />

Order in the borders<br />

As the evenings begin to draw in, the<br />

bedding plants adorning your borders<br />

will quickly die off en-masse. Unless<br />

you have hardy plants, you’ll want to<br />

dig them up, get your beds looking<br />

tidy and spread some compost over<br />

them to replenish the nutrients for<br />

next year.<br />

Tend to the Tiles<br />

Take the time to give tiled paths and<br />

patios a thorough surface cleaning<br />

and a good weeding between the<br />

gaps to help keep them at their best.<br />

It will also help to prevent them from<br />

becoming slippery.<br />

Get to grips with grass<br />

Give your lawn a good trim before the<br />

weather gets too cold and wet, and<br />

apply a good quality lawn treatment<br />

to restore sparse patches and kill<br />

back any weeds and moss growth.<br />

It’s also a good idea to add fertiliser<br />

now, to ensure healthy growth come<br />

spring.<br />

Prepare your pond<br />

A top tip if you have a pond in your<br />

garden - get some pond netting from<br />

a local garden centre and cover it<br />

before the leaves begin to fall. It will<br />

save you a huge amount of effort<br />

later. Hold it down with rocks or<br />

heavy planters.<br />

House your herbs<br />

Potted herbs smell lovely in the<br />

garden - and bringing them into<br />

shelter under a porch or other semienclosed<br />

space will keep them going<br />

for longer.<br />

Top Tip<br />

If you don’t have a porch or other<br />

shelter, a plastic greenhouse is an<br />

inexpensive way to protect longer<br />

lasting plants. Locate it in the most<br />

sheltered area, and put rocks or tiles<br />

on the base to weigh it down.<br />

A little effort now will save a lot of<br />

effort later...<br />

Playwork Pilot Scheme Tackles Holiday Hunger<br />

Adventure playgrounds across<br />

<strong>Wrexham</strong> have opened their<br />

gates for longer this summer<br />

thanks to an exciting new<br />

pilot project to address food<br />

poverty for children in Wales.<br />

At least 65,000 children in<br />

Wales were at risk of going<br />

hungry through the school<br />

holidays according to the<br />

Bevan Foundation with over<br />

3,000 of those children in<br />

<strong>Wrexham</strong> alone. The ‘Holiday<br />

Hunger Playwork Pilot’ was<br />

backed by Welsh Government<br />

funding and meant adventure<br />

playgrounds at The Venture,<br />

Gwenfro Valley and The Land<br />

were able to provide healthy<br />

meals for children who came<br />

to play.<br />

Lead of the WCBC Play &<br />

Youth Support Team (PYST),<br />

who coordinated the pilot,<br />

said the funding, “allowed us<br />

success. There are choirs from<br />

all over, some of which come<br />

a very long way to take part<br />

in our event to promote what<br />

for an extra two days thanks<br />

to the pilot. Sarah Roberts, a<br />

parent, volunteer and member<br />

of the Gwenfro Valley Steering<br />

Group, said “the extra<br />

sessions on the playground<br />

have been incredible for these<br />

kids. This time last year, we<br />

nearly closed and we’ve<br />

wanted the playground open<br />

longer ever since. Here we<br />

are, a year down the line and<br />

we’re open two extra days<br />

and making sure these kids<br />

are getting fed through the<br />

holidays.”.<br />

Westminster since 2014 to<br />

highlight the issue of holiday<br />

hunger in <strong>Wrexham</strong> and other<br />

parts of the UK. He joined his<br />

prepare meals for the project<br />

on Thursday, August 1st.<br />

This excellent documentary<br />

novel brings to life one of the<br />

critical events in Welsh history:<br />

the creation of the Tryweryn<br />

Dam to provide water for<br />

Liverpool Corporation by the<br />

drowning of the village of Cwm<br />

Celyn.<br />

The author sets the scene<br />

following a brilliant introduction<br />

when she notes that all the<br />

homesteads and families are<br />

soundly asleep on the Monday<br />

night a week before Christmas<br />

in 1955 after which their lives will<br />

never be the same again.<br />

The memorable<br />

scenario in the chapel<br />

as one of the elders,<br />

Dafydd Roberts,<br />

reveals the plans to<br />

drown the village to the<br />

faithful congregation.<br />

He asks them to stay<br />

together and that<br />

with the promises of<br />

support from a range<br />

of agencies, he tells<br />

them that he and the<br />

other congregation<br />

leaders are confident<br />

that they can succeed<br />

in getting Liverpool<br />

Corporation to rethink<br />

their plans once they realise the<br />

consequences of their actions.<br />

One can picture how emotional<br />

Dafydd is as he addresses the<br />

congregation in his belief that his<br />

trust in his faith, love for his way<br />

of life and social justice will be on<br />

their side.<br />

She contrasts this with the<br />

New Year celebrations of<br />

two of the leading Liverpool<br />

councillors, Frank Cain and John<br />

Braddock, and the New Year<br />

1996 discussions of a group of<br />

students in Neuadd Pantycelyn.<br />

The author initiates an in-depth<br />

analysis of the problems facing<br />

those who wish to challenge<br />

Liverpool Corporation.<br />

We read about the inept Welsh<br />

speakers who have forsaken the<br />

language and those who do not<br />

want to start a “commotion” and<br />

wish to challenge by acceptable<br />

constitutional methods. In<br />

contrast, she focuses on the<br />

group in the college who see the<br />

use of alternative unconstitutional<br />

action as the only way forward.<br />

involved as the characters in<br />

the village of Capel Celyn and<br />

neighbouring<br />

areas prepare<br />

to protest on<br />

the march<br />

in Liverpool.<br />

the residents of Capel Celyn.<br />

The author brilliantly portrays<br />

the emotional stress suffered<br />

by the Capel Celyn residents<br />

as Elizabeth Riley, a girl from<br />

Capel Celyn who works with<br />

Liverpool Corporation, becomes<br />

the personal assistant to Mr<br />

Braddock. She is given the<br />

job of typing invitations to the<br />

Inauguration of the Reservoir<br />

Llyn Celyn on 21st October,<br />

1965. One of the other office<br />

assistants notices she is crying.<br />

She asks Elizabeth if she is<br />

alright to which Elizabeth replies:<br />

“Yes, just something in my eye”.<br />

I am sure that when they read<br />

this, many readers will shed a<br />

tear in common with Elizabeth at<br />

how the residents of Capel Celyn<br />

were treated.<br />

It is within the chapter on<br />

Tystiolaeth (Evidence) that<br />

the author drives home to the<br />

reader that protests by small<br />

communities against the actions<br />

of powerful companies or<br />

conurbations are doomed to<br />

failure without political change<br />

to back them up. Faith, love<br />

and connections are inadequate<br />

against political and multinational<br />

company power.<br />

Ms Eames has produced a<br />

powerful novel based on actual<br />

events which directly affected<br />

the lives of the residents of Capel<br />

Celyn. The resultant impact of<br />

the flooding of the valley and the<br />

disbursement of residents, many<br />

of whom had rented farms and<br />

houses from the Rhiwlas Estate,<br />

resulted in a massive attitude<br />

change by the Welsh people<br />

to political authority. Groups<br />

developed who were determined<br />

to take up the challenge to<br />

achieve parity for the Welsh<br />

language and the goal of<br />

devolution. The resultant growth<br />

in the use of the Welsh language<br />

in everyday life, schools and<br />

commerce undoubtedly resulted<br />

from the suffering of the residents<br />

of Capel Celyn and insensitive<br />

destruction of a Welsh-speaking<br />

community.<br />

Smiling Rosemarie On Top Of The World<br />

This month we learn about<br />

ROSEMARIE FRANKLAND, the girl<br />

from Rhosllannerchrugog whose<br />

journey to the very pinnacle of the<br />

beauty pageant world was followed by<br />

her struggle to adapt to a life in show<br />

business.<br />

Rosemarie Frankland, the Welsh beauty pageant<br />

contestant, won the 1961 Miss United Kingdom<br />

and Miss World titles before becoming an<br />

actress. Born in Rhosllannerchrugog in February<br />

1943, she was the child of a hospital cleaner<br />

and a factory foreman. She moved to Lancashire<br />

as a child and worked at a local branch of Marks<br />

and Spencer.<br />

All eyes were on Rosemarie Frankland as she was<br />

crowned Miss World in 1961<br />

She took part in many beauty pageants and<br />

won the titles of Miss Lancashire and Miss<br />

Lake District before her big break when she<br />

won Miss Wales in 1961. Winning Miss Wales<br />

meant she qualified for Miss World and later<br />

that same year (as Miss United Kingdom), more<br />

than 10 million television viewers watched her<br />

become the first British woman and the seventh<br />

European to win the Miss World competition at<br />

the Lyceum Ballroom in London. She also was<br />

the first runner-up at Miss Universe 1961.<br />

Together with Gina Swainson, who won the Miss<br />

World title as Miss Bermuda in 1979, she is<br />

one of the two women who came closest to<br />

winning Miss Universe and Miss World, having<br />

been second at Miss Universe before winning<br />

Miss World. Helen Morgan who was also Miss<br />

Wales and Miss United Kingdom, achieved the<br />

same feat, but she resigned the Miss World<br />

title four days after being crowned. When Bob<br />

Hope crowned Rosemarie as Miss World, he<br />

commented that she was the most beautiful girl<br />

he had ever seen.<br />

Modelling work flooded in after she secured<br />

the Miss World title. She also auditioned for<br />

a number of Hollywood studios and she had<br />

an uncredited role in the 1964 Beatles’ film<br />

A Hard Day’s Night. At this time she married Ben<br />

Jones, a photographer who was 16 years her<br />

senior, but the marriage was unable to survive<br />

her hectic lifestyle and he filed for divorce six<br />

months later on the grounds of adultery.<br />

Jones said “Rosemarie was star-struck and I<br />

don’t think she had the capacity to deal with it.<br />

For an 18-year-old behind the counter at Marks<br />

and Spencer to be thrown in the deep end of<br />

Miss World with no guidance and nobody to help<br />

her was too much. In the end it was a bit of a<br />

Marilyn Monroe story.”<br />

Her affair with Hope, which had started shortly<br />

after she won the Miss World title, began again<br />

in earnest. She moved into his Palm Springs<br />

home and appeared in his movie, I’ll Take<br />

Sweden in 1965. Hope took her on a tour of<br />

American forces in the Arctic, joking: “She’s so<br />

hot, we were in real danger of going through<br />

the ice.”<br />

Rosemarie in later years<br />

The film roles dried up and I’ll Take Swedenn<br />

was her last movie role. She had a short-lived<br />

stint as Hope’s personal assistant, but her<br />

relationship with him came to an end too as he<br />

refused to commit to her.<br />

In 1970, she married The Grass Roots singer/<br />

guitarist, Warren Entner and went to live in Los<br />

Angeles. In 1976, she gave birth to their only<br />

child together, a daughter, Jessica. She and<br />

Warren divorced in<br />

1981.<br />

She was suffering<br />

from depression at<br />

the time of her death,<br />

purportedly from a<br />

drugs overdose. She<br />

was 57 when she<br />

died on December<br />

2, 2000 at Marina<br />

del Rey, Los Angeles<br />

County in California.<br />

She was cremated in the USA, but her ashes<br />

were moved back to her native Wales and were<br />

interred in Rhosllannerchrugog cemetery.<br />

purchase of and relocation<br />

to the former unoccupied TJ<br />

Hughes building in the centre<br />

of <strong>Wrexham</strong>, they will also<br />

be rebranding the Science<br />

Discovery Centre, including a<br />

change of name.<br />

Techniquest Glyndŵr has come<br />

under the ‘Techniquest’ banner<br />

since Queen Elizabeth II opened<br />

the centre in 2003 initially<br />

as ‘Techniquest@NEWI’ before<br />

changing to ‘Glyndŵr’ in 2009.<br />

The original Techniquest based<br />

in Cardiff has been partnered<br />

with the <strong>Wrexham</strong>-based science<br />

centre, but in 2020 that will<br />

decrease as the relocation to<br />

Henblas Square is complete.<br />

The rebranding is set to coincide<br />

with the move to the town centre<br />

and provide a fresh face in the<br />

community of <strong>Wrexham</strong>.<br />

The successful funding and<br />

purchase of the town centre<br />

building has already been<br />

announced this summer and this<br />

news completes a trio of major<br />

announcements by Techniquest<br />

Glyndŵr.<br />

Centre Manager Scot Owen said<br />

“This is yet more positive news<br />

for us and offers an opportunity<br />

to gain our own bespoke identity.<br />

It’s the most exciting time in our<br />

16-year history and to have the<br />

chance to cement our own ideas<br />

with regards to name, branding<br />

and all-round feel is a challenge<br />

we are thrilled to undertake.<br />

We now call on the local<br />

community to help us decide<br />

on these changes as we look<br />

to consult with all backgrounds<br />

to create a Science Discovery<br />

Centre for all. Feedback is now<br />

being taken via a public survey<br />

whilst focus groups have been set<br />

up to engage with the public and<br />

take their thoughts on all aspects<br />

Here we are again to share more of our favourite local foodie favourites. It’s great to be able to<br />

share our recommendations with you guys, and support these local, independent businesses.<br />

It’s fantastic to see so many local people appreciating the many thriving establishments<br />

<strong>Wrexham</strong> and its surrounding areas have to offer. This month we’ve visited the Fat Boar in<br />

<strong>Wrexham</strong> Town Centre, the Cock o’Barton near Malpas and Aballu in Rossett.<br />

What finer thing in life is there than a Sunday<br />

roast, especially when you don't have to make<br />

it yourself? We'd recommend The Fat Boar any<br />

day of the week, but taking advantage of their<br />

great value Sunday roast is sure to please with<br />

its generous helpings of meat, veg and majorly<br />

impressive Yorkshire puds.<br />

lock-in to sample some new creations, such as<br />

their mango and vanilla truffles, and ended<br />

We’ve eaten here many times and their seasonal<br />

menus and friendly atmosphere keep us coming<br />

back for more. We visited this time to take<br />

advantage of the awesome beer and burger<br />

offer (Tuesdays from 5pm) and we were totally<br />

impressed. Who could say no to a homemade<br />

steak burger topped with melted cheese and<br />

smoky candied bacon, washed down with a local<br />

ale? We’d recommend booking a table because<br />

even on a Tuesday evening, the restaurant and<br />

bar areas were packed out.<br />

Social Work Student’s Placement Success Recognised<br />

At Houses Of Parliament Awards<br />

A placement with a prisoner<br />

support charity fitted so well for<br />

a <strong>Wrexham</strong> Glyndwr University<br />

Social Work student that he not<br />

only secured a job at its end, but<br />

ended up with a national award<br />

as well.<br />

Jamie Dixon from Penyffordd<br />

initially embarked on the placement<br />

with the Prison Advice Care Trust<br />

(Pact) as part of his studies on the<br />

Glyndwr’s BA (Hons) Social Work<br />

course. During his 80-day<br />

placement, he worked with the<br />

Trust and prisoners at HMP<br />

Berwyn, preparing the prisoners for<br />

the day they were released and<br />

helping them to return to life<br />

outside the prison.<br />

Jamie said: “I would help them sort<br />

out housing, benefits, food, liaison<br />

with council departments and<br />

things like that. The charity actually<br />

works out of the probation office in<br />

<strong>Wrexham</strong> and a lot of my time was<br />

spent in there.”<br />

Following his placement, Jamie<br />

was contacted by the charity and<br />

told he was one of a select group<br />

of people from up and down the<br />

UK who had been selected to<br />

receive a volunteering award.<br />

Jamie and the other volunteers<br />

were asked to come to a special<br />

presentation at the House of<br />

Lords as part of an event<br />

celebrating Pact’s 120 th year<br />

helping people.<br />

He said: “After I heard I had been<br />

put forward for the award, my dad<br />

and I were invited<br />

down to the Houses<br />

of Parliament where<br />

the ceremony was<br />

being held. It was<br />

very interesting<br />

actually – we went<br />

down there the day<br />

resigned and that<br />

was fascinating to watch in the<br />

House of Commons. Seeing those<br />

processes in Parliament is not<br />

something everyone gets to see.<br />

We were each given an award by<br />

David Gauke – the then Justice<br />

Secretary – and it was great to be<br />

recognised for the work I had done.<br />

Pact is a big charity and out of all<br />

the people in the country they<br />

could have given an award to, they<br />

picked just 13 of us.”<br />

Jamie is now working part time<br />

while he completes his studies at<br />

Glyndwr and is looking forward to<br />

applying his degree once he<br />

graduates and finds a career in<br />

social work.<br />

He added: “After the placement<br />

and the awards, I actually ended<br />

up getting a job with Pact – once<br />

again, working with prisoners from<br />

HMP Berwyn. That’s the kind of<br />

arena I’d like to work in once I<br />

graduate. My mum is a social<br />

worker and coming to Glyndwr to<br />

study to become one too seemed<br />

the next logical step for me.”<br />

Lefroy, said: “Each Social Work<br />

student at Glyndwr is expected to<br />

apply the skills they learn with us<br />

on a placement. Jamie is a<br />

conscientious student who<br />

performed exceptionally well on his<br />

second year placement. He was<br />

given a challenging opportunity<br />

and he rose to that challenge.<br />

We work hard with our partner<br />

organisations: <strong>Wrexham</strong>, Flintshire<br />

and Denbighshire Councils, to<br />

provide students with placements<br />

which enable them to grow into the<br />

social work role and this turned out<br />

to be a particularly good fit.”<br />

Outdoors<br />

This month we take you on a mileand-a-half<br />

(2.8km) walk around<br />

the beautiful and diverse Marford<br />

Quarry.<br />

Marford Quarry is located 2.5 miles<br />

NE of <strong>Wrexham</strong>. Heading south<br />

into the village of Marford on the<br />

B5445, turn right onto Pant Lane in<br />

the village centre (immediately after<br />

the Red Lion pub). There is free<br />

parking at Maes y Pant car park,<br />

approximately 415m down Pant<br />

Lane (SJ 354 551; LL12 8HB).<br />

Marford Quarry Walk<br />

With over 1,000 recorded species,<br />

Marford Quarry is a wildlife haven<br />

and one of the best places in Wales<br />

for invertebrates. As its name<br />

suggests, the site was quarried for<br />

many years (supplying aggregate<br />

for the construction of the Mersey<br />

Tunnel) but, now that nature has<br />

truly reclaimed it for herself, insects<br />

thrive in the mix of post-industrial<br />

habitats and several rare species<br />

make their homes here.<br />

The reserve is especially important<br />

for a specialised group of<br />

invertebrates,<br />

aculeate<br />

Hymenoptera (bees, ants and<br />

wasps) with an astounding 171<br />

different species recorded (2018).<br />

Ants, in particular, are an important<br />

source of food for green<br />

woodpeckers and as you wander<br />

along the network of paths that<br />

criss-cross the quarry floor, listen<br />

out for their distinctive, cackling<br />

call. In spring and summer, the vivid<br />

colours of orchids and other<br />

wildflowers accompany the<br />

reserve’s leafy greens; whilst the<br />

flashes of colour from the 35<br />

butterfly species found here are<br />

sure to catch your eye.<br />

You walk into an unexpected oasis<br />

of wilderness by following a treelined<br />

path to find rare plants like wild<br />

liquorice, special invertebrates,<br />

slow-worms and gorgeous<br />

butterflies such as the purple<br />

hairstreak.<br />

The route is easy-going; even<br />

suitable for all-terrain pushchairs.<br />

Turn left out of the car park onto<br />

Pant Lane and walk along the lefthand<br />

pavement until you see a<br />

finger post pointing left (shortly after<br />

crossing Quarry Brow). Follow this<br />

lovely leafy path, noticing the huge,<br />

smooth-barked beech trees among<br />

the sycamores.<br />

When you come to the junction in<br />

paths (after about 300m), take the<br />

right-hand path, passing a bench on<br />

the left and carrying straight on.<br />

Ignore other paths leading off the<br />

track.<br />

At the next fork, take the right-hand<br />

path, which climbs steeply uphill.<br />

Notice the change in vegetation to<br />

ash, hawthorn and birch as you gain<br />

height, whilst the atmosphere<br />

becomes drier and the soil sandier.<br />

If you wish to spot dragonflies and<br />

look for smooth newts, frogs and<br />

toads, dip down the left-hand path<br />

at the next junction to visit the pond<br />

– retrace your steps to return.<br />

The path carries on looping around<br />

the top of the reserve, skirting a<br />

fenced area. The fence prevents<br />

rabbits nibbling special plants such<br />

as bee orchid, pyramidal orchid and<br />

wild liquorice. In summer you smell<br />

wafts of evening primrose and hear<br />

the repetitive song of the chiffchaff.<br />

Continue along this path past a<br />

hedge of Lawson cypress with<br />

glimpses of open countryside<br />

between the trees. Look out for<br />

alder with their distinctive cones;<br />

and mature hawthorns with their red<br />

berries in autumn and white<br />

blossom in May. In summer, you<br />

hear the loud chirping of<br />

grasshoppers. Growing around the<br />

path is wood sage, which smells<br />

pungent if you crush the leaves.<br />

of the quarry – in autumn, the<br />

colours are spectacular.<br />

The path loops around a second<br />

fenced area: in summer, see if you<br />

can spot the bubblegum-pink<br />

flowers of common centaury in the<br />

open area to the right of the path.<br />

Pass the circular benches on the<br />

right and take the mesh path leading<br />

left.<br />

Just before the next benches ahead<br />

on the right, turn left and left again<br />

– from here on in, you are starting to<br />

retrace your steps. Plenty of dead<br />

wood is left to rot on the reserve as<br />

habitat for invertebrates – see if you<br />

can spot the striking ruby-tailed<br />

wasp as you walk.<br />

Very soon you come to another<br />

junction of paths. Take the left-hand<br />

route, which returns you down the<br />

long straight path, the way you<br />

came in. Turn right out of the<br />

footpath onto Pant Lane to return to<br />

the car park.<br />

Although your guided walk finishes<br />

the paths of Maes y Pant. The<br />

highlight is the viewing area: to<br />

reach this, turn right past the Maes y<br />

Pant welcome sign and carry on<br />

along the track until you reach a set<br />

of steep steps on the right. Climb<br />

the steps for panoramic views over<br />

the trees and distant hills – on a<br />

clear day you can even see<br />

Liverpool, 25 miles away. As you<br />

retrace your steps to the car park,<br />

look out for green and great-spotted<br />

woodpeckers.<br />

Groundwork North Wales Heritage Fun Day<br />

Groundwork North Wales have had a busy<br />

summer of exciting events taking place at<br />

Minera Lead Mines and at Venue in the Park,<br />

Alyn Waters with more to look forward to in<br />

<strong>September</strong>.<br />

This month sees two new events<br />

for the local and wider community<br />

at Minera with a Heritage Fun Day<br />

taking place on <strong>September</strong> 14th<br />

and an outdoor film-screening on<br />

<strong>September</strong> 21st.<br />

The fun day will feature guided tours of the site<br />

provided by <strong>Wrexham</strong> Museum, fun and games<br />

from Giggles and Games, face painting from Divine<br />

Designs and much more. The film screening is<br />

called ‘Movies at Minera’ and will be showing Shrek,<br />

the 2001 American cartoon comedy film loosely<br />

based on the 1990 fairytale picture book of the<br />

same name by William Steig. Tickets are available<br />

online and from the visitor centre itself.<br />

These events aim to show off the attraction’s<br />

fantastic natural landscape and inform participants<br />

about the area’s rich heritage.<br />

Groundwork North Wales is a registered charity and<br />

helps people and organisations make changes to<br />

create better neighbourhoods, build skills and job<br />

prospects and to live and work in a greener way.<br />

Seventh-Degree Black-Belt<br />

Master Ady Jones started<br />

Taekwondo when he was just<br />

11, started competing in 1992<br />

and went onto win numerous<br />

national and world titles and<br />

trained in the US and South<br />

Korea. He retired from the<br />

competitive circuit in 2007, but<br />

went back and won the men’s<br />

lightweight sparring title at the<br />

world championships in 2013.<br />

He started his business in<br />

Ruabon fitting classes in around<br />

his job at Kellogg’s. After a few<br />

years of juggling work<br />

commitments with the martial<br />

arts business, Ady took the<br />

decision to leave Kellogs in June<br />

2014 to concentrate full time on<br />

his teaching!<br />

He runs the business with his<br />

wife, Sarah, who used to work at<br />

MBNA in Chester before moving<br />

into the Taekwondo business<br />

with her husband in 2016. She’s<br />

no slouch when it comes to<br />

martial arts – she’s a seconddegree<br />

black belt herself. This<br />

theme runs in the family: Bertie,<br />

15, has held a first-degree black<br />

belt since he was 10 and even<br />

Poppy, 8, has a red belt!<br />

Amongst Ady’s trainees has<br />

been Jade Jones, the 2012 and<br />

2016 Olympic gold medallist in<br />

the women’s 57kg category and<br />

the <strong>2019</strong> World champion.<br />

Ady’s classes run seven days a<br />

week with a full-time centre on<br />

<strong>Wrexham</strong> Industrial Estate and<br />

additional locations in Ruabon,<br />

Llay, Gresford and Rossett and<br />

with classes from ages two up to<br />

adult, there is a session for<br />

everyone!<br />

Taekwondo is a multi-beneficial<br />
