Good afternoon. Our previous home 

match against Benburb was a 

scrappy affair. We were delighted 

to pick up the 3 points despite not 

reaching our level. Special mention 

to Dean on back to back goals and 

he’s come back in and loving his 

football again. 

Intensity levels dropped somewhat 

in the game but we were mentally 

tough and things such the sending 

off, which previously may have had 

an adverse effect on us, didn’t upset 

us at all. 

We must continue to strive to improve 

as a group. We are learning 

about each other on and off the park 

and the boys continue to bond. It’s 

easier to do when you are winning 

but my role is to ensure we improve 

week in, week out, regardless of 

results. 

What can I say about the win at 

Glencairn. Unbelievable spirit, unbelievable 

heart and what a feeling 

it was when the equaliser went in. 

At that point I felt we had got away 

with one but James Dean from the 

coaching staff shouted go and get 

the winner when Rutherglen were 

taking centre. I must admit I laughed

to myself as it was 94 mins but 

Glencairn had gone. When we got 

the freekick it would have been easy 

to keep the defenders back and accept 

the point but the lads went for 

it and despite my instincts tell me to 

accept the point sometimes you’ve 

got to give the players their wings 

and they went for it. What a feeling 

when the ball flew in for the winner. 

I’ll temper the feeling of total elation 

by saying we looked all over the 

place at times. We’ve been solid all 

season but perhaps changes (four) 

that were forced on us and further 

changes to freshen things up (we 

were a bit flat against Benburb) had 

an adverse effect. 6 changes did 

disrupt us but I’m offering excuses 

and we don’t making excuses. We 

will get back to defensive work during 

the next week but I can honestly 

say I didn’t think we were out of it at 

4-1 down. Not in my wildest dreams 

did I think we could win it but I felt 

there was still enough spirit to get 

us something from the game and so 

it proved. What a night. 

We’ll need to use the squad this 

week as we have a few injuries and 

a suspension so hopefully the fans 

can continue to get behind the boys 

and we continue to make a good 

start to the season. 

We don’t set targets about winning 

leagues and trophies, we won’t 

do that, what we will do is make a 

commitment to each other to make 

sure we give our maximum game in, 

game out. If we do that and improve 

our mentality, our technical ability 

will stand us in good stead for a 

long, TOUGH season.

they like, put up stands, 

build changing rooms, but 

whenever The Buffs put a 

spade in the ground Council 

Officers are over in a flash 

serving the club notices to 

stop all work or face legal 

action. 

The council were insturmental 

in the Buffs moving, 

as they said at the time "An 

ideal situation for Kilwinning 

and the only way the 

Buffs can get financial help 

and funding"

The camera was turned around on our newest volunteer as Ben Grant sat 

down with Colin to talk about his role at the club

Tell us a bit about yourself and why you got involved with the 

club? 

I’ve been a Kilwinning boy all my life, I attended Whitehirst Park 

Primary School and Kilwinning Academy. I have always had a 

keen interest in media from a young age and have always dappled 

in things like radio presenting and production, podcasting, blogging 

etc. I can’t say I've been an avid Buffs fan from birth however 

did always check the results in the Irvine Herald every week and 

was at both the semi final and final for the 99 Cup win I’m sure I 

have a scrapbook somewhere with loads of Buffs cut outs from 

the paper. I spent most of my younger years following Kilmarnock. 

Colin McArdle was the stadium announcer and also the 

presenter of a couple of radio shows on West FM from the age of 

about 5 until about 12 he was my idol and all i wanted to be was 

the stadium announcer at Rugby Park and a radio presenter when 

I was older and Colin would be retiring. 

In the last few years, I've always wanted to get involved in my 

local community and could never find a way to channel that. With 

the team moving from Abbey Park to Buffs Park at Kilwinning 

Sports Club I felt it was a good time to offer some of the skills I 

have built up over the years to help the club. I played all my youth 

football at KSC and had my dad John Grant as a coach for the 

majority of that time. He unfortunately passed away a few years 

ago and football was one of the things that brought us closest 

together and I have some great memories so KSC holds a special 

place in my heart. 

Are you enjoying your time so far? 

Definitely it’s been great, I've only been involved for a few months 

but all the committee, management and players have been really 

welcoming. I’ve even managed to rope my wife Lauren into 

things. Thankfully everyone has been cooperative and happy to 

get involved in the videos for KRTV and allowed me a free hand 

to put my own stamp on the social media output. As i mentioned 

earlier i’ve always been looking to find something to do in the 

community and I’m glad I feel I've made the right choice. 

What’s your ambition for the club? 

I really hope on the field we have a successful season hopefully a 

cup run or maintaining the good start to the season and continue 

to challenge at the top. 

My own aspirations is to get The Buffs to a point where I feel 

we’re the best at marketing and social media in the junior football 

ranks and perhaps even challenge some of the Pro teams in that 

respect there’s no reason why we can’t be we may not have the 

resources to do things like the Hibs/Rangers/Kilmarnock’s of this 

world who have amazing marketing and social media content

you have to give yourself a good title on LinkedIn though right? 

My biggest influences have 

always been my Mum and 

Dad, 

My main role involves running the social media accounts for the 

club which includes all the new graphics you’ll hopefully have 

noticed on Facebook and Twitter on match days as well as getting 

out any information to the fans that we feel they need to know 

about. The other major thing I work on is our new youtube channel 

KRTV. This is where you’ll find post match interviews with 

Chris and a player after each game, through time I'll be developing 

some video content that will involve the fans, some of the local 

school kids and youth teams as well as some fun stuff with the 

players. I am also in the process of looking at our merchandising 

and hopefully soon you’ll have the chance to buy some new Buffs 

clothing at our club shop.

so growing the brand in Kilwinning will be important and hopefully 

showcase how good junior football is and through time we’ll 

increase crowds with people wanting to support their hometown 

team. There are great plans for the club behind the scenes and it’s 

really something I hope Kilwinning can get behind. 

Finally you’ll also find me on the mic on match days doing the PA 

announcements for the teams, scorers and subs. This is me getting 

to live out my childhood dream. I’m not going to lie it’s much 

harder than it looks and I'm still getting to grips with the goal 

scorers and all the substitutions

The Buff Park

The buffs came into this match with 

2 wins and draw after a 2-1 derby victory 

against Irvine Meadow. 

Chris Strain would make 3 changes 

to the side that won at Meadow Park, 

Adam Strain returned in goal, Darren 

Frye replaced the injured Chris Mc- 

Gowan and there were places on the 

bench for the previously suspended 

Alex McWaters and striker Ally Mc- 

Colm. 

The Buffs started well with early 

chances falling to Ryan Wilson who 

was played in behind The Bens defence 

on the left side with a great 

chance to score he cut on to his 

favoured right foot and the shot 

was stopped by the Benburb keeper. 

As the first half went on the Kilwinning 

side found themselves in a bit 

of a battle there would be a yellow 

card for Josh Meechan of Benburb 

who wrestled Carlo Monti in his own 

half with Carlo breaking away and 

Meechan taking the legs away from 

Monti and giving us a free kick just 

inside the Benburb half. With a minute 

to go of the first half Ryan Wilson 

put Dean Agnew clear through on 

goal and when it looked like Agnew 

would square to Monti he dinked the 

ball over the keeper and into the roof 

of the net. 1-0 Buffs and the half time 

whistle sounded. 

Benburb got the second half underway 

shooting towards The Abbey 

Tower End, and with only a few 

minutes gone of the second half 

Meechan found himself in the referee’s 

book once again and gave the 

referee no choice but to send the 

player off. Kilwinning continued to 

search for a second goal but found 

hard to break The Bens down. Carlo 

Monti challenged for the ball in the 

centre circle only to be bulldozed by 

the opposition player through the 

back and Carlo looked in extreme 

pain. He required treatment from the 

physio before managing to walk off 

the pitch. He returned to the field for 

a few minutes only to require further 

treatment and was stretchered off 

with damage to his ribs and then 

replaced by Ally McColm just past the 

hour mark. 

The Buffs couldn’t make the extra 

man count and before too long Michael 

Hewitt who had already been

booked made a late tackle only for 

the referee to reach for his pocket 

once again and show Hewitt a second 

yellow and a red card. The game 

fizzled out and The Buffs kept the

Glencairn under the lights turned out to be a 

match that the crowd in attendance will never 

forget. 

Buffs went into the match as table toppers and 

for a long spell looked as though they would 

relinquish their unbeaten start to the season. 

Buffs started the game brightly with McGowan 

and Syme both coming close with headers and 

wide men McLaughlin and Agnew causing problems 

for the home side. Despite the bright start 

the home side took the lead through a wonder 

volley from Simeon from 25yrds which gave 

strain no chance. Suddenly the Buffs looked 

rattled and Glencairn were capitalising on slack 

passing and catching Buffs on the counter. 

A second goal followed as a throw in was worked 

into Buffs box and Mckay beat Strain to a loose 

ball and set up McRobbie to slot into an unguarded 

net. 

Buffs had another few chances from set plays 

but went in 2-0 down at HT. 

Buffs looked to assert themselves at the start 

of the half and were dealt a blow by conceding a 

goal from a wide freekick. Ricky Hanvey turning 

the ball into his own net. 

2 Substitutes were made in a bid to rejig the deflated 

side as Wilson and Tan came on for Lewis 

and McLauglin. 

Maitland pulled a goal back from an excellent 

McWaters cross following a series of corners 

and suddenly Buffs has momentum. It all looked 

in vain though as a swift Glencairn counter 

caught the Kilwinning defence all over the place 

and Simeon nodded in a great McKay cross to 

put Rutherglen firmly in control with 15 mins 

remaining. Indeed 2 minutes later a fine Strain 

block helped denied McKay and stopped Buffs 

going down 5-1. 

Frye came on for Whyte which saw Buffs change 

shape. 

Kilwinning hadn’t given up on the match yet and 

Rutherglen who had put a lot into the match 

were tiring and relying on the GK to preserve their 

3 goal lead. 

A missed chance at the back post for Agnew 

seemed to signal the end of buffs hopes but with 

7 minutes remaining Mcwaters offered a glimmer 

of hope with a deflected shot to make it 4-2. 

Tan and Frye we’re now pulling the strings and 

it was one way traffic. Mcwaters enjoyed some 

luck with his first strike he again cut in from the 

left and unleashed a driven shot from 22yards 

across the keeper and into the far corner. No luck 

required this time. Now 4-3, the match entered 

injury time and after 6 corners in quick succession 

Buffs got an equaliser which seemed 

very unlikely 8 minutes before. Maitland got his 

second of the game rising to get on the head of 

a Frye corner. There were scenes of jubilation for 

the traveling Buffs fans but nothing that would 

compare to a few minutes later. 

Kilwinning had a freekick in a defensive area and 

rather than accept an unlikely point. Defenders 

Maitland and Syme made the journey into the opposition 

box. It’s was 5 mins into added time and 

McColm kept the ball alive around the box. Syme 

to a touch on the 18 yard line and on the stretch 

unleashed a half volley into the bottom corner 

of the net. Queue the bedlam that saw players, 

coaching staff, and some over exuberant punters 

join a pile on! I think they can be forgiven in

this instance as this was a moment of Complete 

euphoria for all of the Kilwinning contingent. 

4-5 to Kilwinning and the ref blew for time upon 

the restart. 

An unbelievable win which was more about spirit 

and endeavour than brilliant play but what a way 

to win a match. 



As the Child Wellbeing and Protection Officer for 

Kilwinning Sports Club, I thought I’d give you a brief 

insight into the work being done by the KSC/ Buffs 

Youth Football Section. 

A lot is happening on and off the field much like our 

first team. As we improve the Club infrastructure, we 

feel it’s equally as important to make sure we have 

the best Child Wellbeing and Protection policies of 

any Club in Scotland. 

Kilwinning Sports Club – Youth Football Section is a 

collection of youth football teams for boys and girls 

aged 5 up to 21. 

We have over 250 young players in 17 teams, supported 

by almost 70 coaches who are all volunteers. 

All our coaches are committed to improving the 

Health and Wellbeing of children and young adults 

playing football at our club in the heart of our community.

In addition, our large volunteer coaching commitment 

and our superb facilities allows these children 

and young people to engage in healthy, organised 

sport with an emphasis on team activities. 

Very soon, I am hoping to establish a kit/ football 

boot exchange to ensure equipment, team strips 

and football boots are recycled. As a parent of 4 

boys myself and as any parent knows, the cost of 

kit, particularly football boots is expensive. The 

rate of growth of our kids and young people means 

new boots are sometimes purchased and replaced 

a few times a season. By offering this equipment 

exchange, used boots & kit will be stored and available 

to individuals and teams that need them thus 

keeping overall costs down. This positive and proactive 

approach from us helps to combat Poverty 

and Inequality. One of our Buffs Under 17 players, 

Stewart Mathieson also travelled to a secondary 

school in Osika, Kenya last year taking a large 

number of KSC Kilwinning Rangers Youth Football 

kits and polo shirts from the 2003s and 2004s. This 

year he arranged more kit from the 2003s and 2004s 

including tracksuits, providing these to the Kenyan 

school pupils. 

We will also be looking to set up a Youth Football 

Section Forum in the next few weeks where instead 

of just coaches and officials coming up with ideas 

on how our teams and club is run and governed, we 

will have a selection of youth players from across 

the teams contribute their Voice and Participation. 

Their ideas and suggestions are hugely important to 

us, because after all, our Youth Football Section is 

just that……

spells at junior level 

with Dalry Thistle and 

Cumnock before taking 

up the manager’s 

position at Dalry and 

then moving to Glenafton 

before leaving in 

controversial fashion 

to take up the reigns at 

Hurlford where they’ve 

enjoyed the most successful 

period ever.
