Back to school 

Dear Readers 

I hope you had an enjoyable summer. With the kids heading back to school (that time 

when most parents breathe a sigh of relief) and teachers returning from their more 

than well-earned rest, I thought I would talk about apps which can help you and your 

children. 

Technology is now common place in schools with the next generation using gadgets 

and apps to help with all aspects of their education. If you think your children are 

carrying too much in the way of books and equipment then this one may be for you. 

myHomework Student Planner is exactly what it says and although it is free (but with 

adverts) you can upgrade and have a full version without adverts. For organising most 

aspects of homework, note taking, events, planning and much more, it is a versatile 

tool to keep you and your children organised. 

Photomath is a handy app for not just maths but also science and engineering. It can 

solve equations etc, but more importantly can show you solution to these problems. 

Some would class it as cheating but if you are learning how to solve problems this one 

may be useful. 

Khan Academy is a repository of interactive tutorials and videos aimed at helping 

students gain a better understanding of subjects. It is very easy to use and another 

great free app. 

DuoLingo If you have a child in secondary school most probably they will be learning 

another language and DuoLingo is an easy and intuitive app to help, there are over 

thirty different languages available. It teaches new words, sentences, grammar and 

then tests the student on their recall by a scheduled plan. Each section targets 

weaknesses to help gain better knowledge. 

There are many apps out there both paid for and free, and aimed to help students 

achieve better results. Make sure to read the reviews as this is mostly a sure indication 

of what people think and how good the app is, but always take the reviews with a pinch 

of salt. Good and bad reviews are generally clear.

Devon & Somerset Fire and Rescue Service 

Public consultation on changes to the Service 

Public consultation opened in July on proposals to make significant changes to the 

way the Service operates. The consultation period runs until 22 September 2019 and 

there are a number of ways for everyone to engage with the consultation. 

The online consultation survey is on the Service’s website at 

https://www.dsfire.gov.uk/ and residents are invited to go to local public 'drop-in' 

exhibitions across Devon and Somerset. 

The exhibitions have been arranged across the Service area, particularly near areas 

most affected by the proposals, for people to ask questions about this consultation 

and the future of the Service. 

Assistant Chief Fire Officer Pete Bond said: “We really want to hear what you have to 

say about the proposed service options so please use this opportunity to engage with 

us and have your voice heard.” 

Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service is considering closing or removing a number 

of low risk/low activity fire stations and fire engines and reinvesting the savings into 

prevention work in the community.

Hinkley Point C 

Environmental monitoring 

With the construction of the two European Pressurised Reactors at Hinkley Point C 

came with it a number of environmental concerns and especially the dust and noise 

emissions associated with the construction. At its outset we were faced with one of the 

largest and most complex construction sites in Europe. 

Planning conditions were agreed with EDF Energy for an environmental monitoring 

scheme to monitor the noise, dust and particulate matter emissions around the 

southern boundary of the site where nearest residential properties are located. 

Four EDF Energy environmental monitoring stations record real-time the dust within the 

fractions PM10, PM2.5 and TSP and also the noise levels. There are trigger levels set 

that align to the construction management plans that require action(s) by EDF Energy to 

mitigate. Where the emissions are prolonged and over certain limits it requires EDF to 

also notify this Council. 

The details of these limits can be found within conditions MS2 (Air Quality Monitoring 

Scheme) and also MS9 (Construction Noise) of the Order that granted development

Bridge Road, Exeter 

A series of overnight closures will start on 

the A379 Bridge Road, Exeter at the end 

of August to allow essential safety barrier

St. Margaret’s Hospice Glorious Somerset Garden Evenings 

Have you visited one of our Glorious Somerset gardens this summer? 

We have been overwhelmed with the response, and have 

already exceeded the total raised in 2018. We are so grateful 

for the garden owners, coordinators and volunteers, and of 

course the visitors, who have made this season such a success. 

2020 is the St. Margaret’s Hospice’s 40 th Anniversary, and we hope to recruit Forty 

Glorious Gardens to take part. If you would like to find out about what is involved in 

sharing your garden and the support we offer, or would be interested in volunteering as 

a Glorious Garden Area Coordinator, or Glorious Garden Volunteer, please come along 

to one of our Information evenings during September, enjoy tea and cake, and meet 

some of the existing garden owners and volunteers.

News from the Exmoor Pony Centre 

Ashwick, Dulverton TA22 9QE 

Despite a month of mixed and sometimes pretty hairy weather there was still plenty 

going on at the Pony Centre with trekking, taster sessions, a Teddy Bear’s Picnic and 

summer cream tea afternoons. With the holiday season in full swing, activity days 

were held every Thursday throughout August with all the usual riding activities plus 

delicious cream teas served in the Green Room. 

We are delighted the Pony Centre has been accepted as a Learning Destination for 

the Children’s University so we hope those of you who are members will come and 

meet our Exmoor Ponies, challenge yourself on our Interactive Quiz Board, and earn a 

stamp for your passport. 

We had a very successful visit from 18 children from St Dubricius First School in 

Porlock. The outing was a surprise present for them as they were leaving to go up to 

Middle School and they had a really enjoyable time riding, grooming and learning 

about the ponies. 

MMT were invited to be at the National 

Park's 70 th birthday Picnic celebration 

at Simonsbath on 17 th July. Linzi, 

Louise, Lydia and Barry manned our 

stand and chatted to HRH the Duchess 

of Cornwall when she came over to say 

hello to our ponies, Rama and Tom. 

Activities available at ALL the events at 

the Centre are: 

Pony Rides (the minimum age for riding 

is 4 years old and there is a 12 stone 

weight limit). 

Pony Grooming; Crafts & Games; Refreshments (cakes, sandwiches) served by our 

volunteers in our warm Green Room Building.
