Lynton Fire Station cuts - Public meeting on 7 th August 

Over 150 people nearly filled the main 

floor of Lynton Town Hall at a public 

meeting to hear about and plan action 

on the proposed cuts to fire cover in 

the Lynton area. The meeting was 

opened by Lynton Mayor, Chris Sleep, 

who introduced the other two speakers, 

District Councillor John Patrinos, and 

Chris Hope, Watch Manager at Lynton Fire Station. 

DSFRS had produced a glossy and detailed report explaining their reasoning for the cuts. 

However, the way in which statistics were accounted gave a very misleading 

representation of the work of smaller rural stations. Only attendance at statutory 

incidents, house fires and road traffic accidents were counted. In a rural area, fire crews 

might be called upon to deal with heath fires or rescue trapped animals or assist coast 

guard in cliff rescue. None of these counted towards the station statistics. Chris Hope 

used an example, during a period Lynton had attended 47 incidents, but only 3 would 

qualify as counting to station use. Other events not counted were when crews attended 

incidents out of their designated area or were simply standing by at adjacent stations. In 

a recent event, Lynton were called to stand by at Minehead while their crews, and 

Porlock, were dealing with a fire at Butlins. 

The proposal is that Lynton should lose its second appliance which is a four wheel drive 

and capable of going off road and reaching remote moorland fires. At Porlock where it is 

proposed to close the station, in addition to the main appliance there is a pump based 

on a Land Rover body and a groundhog type vehicle, both capable of reaching remote 

areas and dealing with heath fires. Therefore the implementation of the cuts would 

remove all heath and moorland fire fighting capability in the North Exmoor area. 

Proposed changes at other stations would have a knock on effect at Lynton, notably 

closure at Woolacombe and reduction of cover from Ilfracombe, and downgrading 

Barnstaple night cover to retained only. Chris Hope produced a chart which showed how 

increased response and travel times would affect the ability to back up Lynton in the 

event of a major incident. Audience went on to discuss what action they could take to 

oppose the cuts. No senior members of DSFRS had been prepared to attend and answer 

questions from the public, indeed it was commented they had been reluctant to attend a 

number of public meetings. Audience was encouraged to respond to the DSFRS on-line 

questionnaire, write to local MP Peter Heaton-Jones, and most usefully, write to 

individual members of the Devon and Somerset Fire Authority which was a committee 

who would have the final decision on the cuts. They had little personal knowledge of the 

special problems of remote rural areas and were likely to accept the statistics and 

reasoning of the DSFRS. It was important they were made fully aware of the possible 

consequences and a list of their names and addresses was distributed after the meeting.

Back to school 

Dear Readers 

I hope you had an enjoyable summer. With the kids heading back to school (that time 

when most parents breathe a sigh of relief) and teachers returning from their more 

than well-earned rest, I thought I would talk about apps which can help you and your 

children. 

Technology is now common place in schools with the next generation using gadgets 

and apps to help with all aspects of their education. If you think your children are 

carrying too much in the way of books and equipment then this one may be for you. 

myHomework Student Planner is exactly what it says and although it is free (but with 

adverts) you can upgrade and have a full version without adverts. For organising most 

aspects of homework, note taking, events, planning and much more, it is a versatile 

tool to keep you and your children organised. 

Photomath is a handy app for not just maths but also science and engineering. It can 

solve equations etc, but more importantly can show you solution to these problems. 

Some would class it as cheating but if you are learning how to solve problems this one 

may be useful. 

Khan Academy is a repository of interactive tutorials and videos aimed at helping 

students gain a better understanding of subjects. It is very easy to use and another 

great free app. 

DuoLingo If you have a child in secondary school most probably they will be learning 

another language and DuoLingo is an easy and intuitive app to help, there are over 

thirty different languages available. It teaches new words, sentences, grammar and 

then tests the student on their recall by a scheduled plan. Each section targets 

weaknesses to help gain better knowledge. 

There are many apps out there both paid for and free, and aimed to help students 

achieve better results. Make sure to read the reviews as this is mostly a sure indication 

of what people think and how good the app is, but always take the reviews with a pinch 

of salt. Good and bad reviews are generally clear.

Minibus trips from Lynton 

There are two types of trips by minibus 

operating from Lynton: 

1. Half-day trips to a variety of locations across 

Devon & Somerset. These are on alternate 

Thursdays - £7 per person. These trips are 

designed for those unable to get out easily, 

but are open to all on a first come, first served 

basis. 

The minibus leaves Lynton Town Hall @ 9am 

sharp, returning for 2pm, allowing roughly 

three hours at our chosen destination.

have a full complement to ensure these trips

Lyn Health Medical and Minor Injury Services News 

FLU Vaccinations Our first Clinic will be advertised locally and is likely to be early to mid October. You 

are eligible to receive a FREE Flu Jab if you: are 65 years of age or over, are pregnant, have certain 

medical conditions as below, are very overweight, are living in a long-stay residential care home or 

other long-stay care facility, receive a carer’s allowance, or are the main carer for an elderly or 

disabled person whose welfare may be at risk if you fall ill, are a healthcare worker with direct patient 

contact, or a social care worker. Medical Conditions covered: chronic (long-term) respiratory disease, 

chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or bronchitis, chronic heart disease, chronic kidney disease, 

chronic liver disease, chronic neurological conditions, diabetes, problems with your spleen or have had 

your spleen removed, a weakened immune system, or taking medication eg steroid tablets or having 

chemotherapy. Those who receive their invitation to have the Shingles or Pneumococcal Vaccine may 

also have this at the same time. However if you are entitled to all three, a second appointment on 

another day will be required for the third vaccine. Please contact the Health Centre on 01598 753226 

to book your appointment as we DO NOT send out invitations for the Flu Vaccinations. 

Chemist Issues We are receiving an increasing number of complaints relating to the service and 

availability of items at Lynton Chemist and would ask that you to take up any issues with them first. 

We can assure everyone we work very closely with the chemist and the GP’s are advised when there is 

a national shortage of any medications and if this is the case we will do our best to supply an 

alternative. However, please ensure that you check BEFORE leaving the chemist that the items are for 

you, are the correct dose and the medications you have ordered, and that you need them all. It is too 

late to correct once you have left the chemist's premises. Don’t forget you need to order your 

medications at least two working days before you wish to collect them and this can be done using our 

online service or ticking the boxes on your repeat slip and dropping them into us. Please ensure you 

add your name, address and date of birth and the full name and dose of the required medication. Also 

if you are asking for medications early please ensure you have made a note on the repeat request to 

say why they are required early as any early request more than seven days before they are due will be 

rejected. 

Prescribing Guidance Patients are advised as per guidance from NHS England, that GP’s will no 

longer be able to provide an NHS prescription for the treatment of the following conditions but will 

direct patients to purchase over the counter medicines from the Pharmacy. If, as a result of taking 

these, the condition has not improved the GP will consider what alternatives are available. A selflimiting 

condition which does not require any medical advice or treatment as it will clear up on its own 

eg sore throats, coughs, colds and viruses, a minor illness suitable for self-care and can be treated 

with items purchased from a pharmacy. These conditions include indigestion, mouth ulcers, warts & 

verrucae, acute sore throat, infant colic, mild to moderate hay fever, conjunctivitis, infrequent cold 

sores of the lip, mouth ulcers, coughs, colds and nasal congestion, infrequent constipation, nappy 

rash, cradle cap, infrequent migraine, oral thrush, dandruff, insect bites and stings, prevention of 

tooth decay, diarrhoea (adults), mild acne, ringworm / athletes foot, dry eyes / sore tired eyes, minor 

burns and scalds, sunburn, earwax, mild cystitis, sun protection, excessive sweating, mild dry skin, 

teething / mild toothache, haemorrhoids, mild irritant dermatitis, threadworms, head lice, minor pain, 

discomfort and fever (eg aches and sprains, headache, period pain, back pain), travel sickness, 

indigestion and heartburn, warts and verrucae. Probiotics and some vitamins / minerals should also 

no longer be routinely prescribed as most people should, get these from eating a healthy, varied and 

balanced diet.

Lyn Defibrillator Fund 

On Monday 12 th August the Lyn Defibrillator Fund took delivery of the first four AEDs. 

This was made possible because of the astounding generosity of the residents, 

businesses, clubs and associations of the Lyn Valley. 

Thank you to the Lyn Community Bookshop, Lyn Lions, Lyn Community Development 

Trust, Lyn Electrics, Cliff Railway, Di Mitchell in memory of Bob, Lyn Valley Classic, River 

Class Lynton School, St Austell Brewery, Barbrook Filling Station, Sheepskin Shop,

Lynmouth Electricity Station 

The water-powered 

electricity generating station 

was the work of a local 

engineer, Charles Geen. 

The station began to operate 

in 1890 and relied on the 

fast flowing East Lyn River to 

drive the turbines, the water 

arriving at the station via a 

leat and pipeline. 

However, by 1895 demand was outstripping 

supply at certain times and a pumped storage 

system was installed to ease this pressure 

The generating station was badly damaged by the 

flood in 1952 (see photograph) and the reservoir 

has been demolished, leaving the leat as the only 

part to have survived in anything like a 

reasonable state of preservation. The leat 

provides a visual reminder of this early period in 

the generation of electrical power in England.

be present at every Road Closure so if you come across a ROAD CLOSED sign with red and white cones 

going across part or across the whole of the road DO NOT go past. Police do not close roads unless 

absolutely necessary and if you do go past a ROAD CLOSED sign you could be reported. 

Be smart, be safe and plan ahead Devon and Cornwall Police are urging new students taking up 

residence in the region’s university cities and towns to think about what they can do to make 

themselves less vulnerable to criminals and plan ahead to consider their own personal safety and 

belongings. Devon and Cornwall Police advise the following: Walk in well lit, well used areas where there 

are lots of people. Always stay alert. Think about how you’ll be getting home before you go out. If you use 

a taxi make sure it is licensed and if the taxi driver doesn’t know your name, don’t get in. Always carry 

your mobile, make sure it is charged and you have enough credit. If you look and act drunk, you are more 

vulnerable. Friends look after each other. Make sure your mates know where you’re going. Remember to

New foodie fundraiser for 

Children’s Hospice South West 

Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW) is asking 

people to get creative in the kitchen and take part 

in a month of foodie fundraising this October. The 

charity is urging supporters to host a Cook Eat 

Give event for friends and family and ask guests 

to make a donation in return. 

The new fundraising initiative will help CHSW 

support more than 500 children with life-limiting 

conditions and their families at its three children’s hospices across the South West, 

including at Little Bridge House in Fremington, North Devon. Mealtimes are a big part of 

life at the charity’s three children’s hospices. During their short stays at the hospice, all 

families eat lunch and dinner together around a large dining table alongside hospice 

staff. For many families, eating a hot, home cooked meal together is a rarity due to the 

care demands on parents alongside their hectic routines. Families forge relationships 

with staff and other families also supported by the hospice during mealtimes, while 

siblings also make long lasting friendships.

The Convent in Lynton “We have new sisters, they are here at the moment and busy 

cleaning, it is a monumental task. They move in permanently on August 1st. Unlike the Poor Clares 

they are not enclosed so they will be seen out and about in the area. They are Sisters of Mary 

Morning Star, the website to find out about them is www.mariastellamatutina.com. Initially there will 

be five sisters. They are young, energetic, joyful, amazing vocalists and we feel very blessed to have 

them come to us. There will be a new priest coming in the near future too. Fr Guy De Gaynesford. 

I do hope the wider community will make them all feel very welcome. ….”

will restore an integral part of our village. 

Great news to see the convent back being used properly after so long! Looking forward to

Thank you very much for the Fantastic News. I used to love the Convent and visit the previous 

Sisters each week and hope to visit the new Sisters there too. 

Wonderful, I’m so pleased that the Convent will come back to life. I remember the Poor Clares 

when I was a child. There were 2 of them who used to go shopping, the Irish one always used 

to talk to me and called me by name. The other Nun didn’t used to speak but always had a 

lovely smile on her face. I hope that the new Sisters will like and enjoy Lynton and Lynmouth. 

Mum used to take us to church at the Convent from time to time, she was brought up as a 

Catholic until her Mum fell out with the Priest for some reason. We also went to the Methodist 

and Congregational churches sometimes even though we were Church of England. Every 

church leads to the same place in the end. 

Excellent news – from an annual visitor xx 

Good news that the convent will remain a convent and that the garden will eventually be 

restored. Common sense seems to have prevailed for once. My sister got married at the 

convent in 1980, the nuns sang Amazing Grace from the gallery and it was, truly amazing. A 

special place. 

Pleased that there are new Sisters and a priest coming to Lynton. So happy the Convent will be 

open again. Wishing them all the very best.

‘What a wonderful world’ – Thomas Cameron started 

the concert singing that, and went on to sing many 

more songs from popular shows. Kate Robey 

accompanied him beautifully on our church piano. 

In between songs Cameron told us anecdotes about his 

singing career. We had a very appreciative audience 

and I’m glad Pam Pile was able to attend. The Robey 

family stayed with Pam and Joe for many years when 

they ran the Lorna Doone in Lynmouth. 

In October once again the TWO MOORS FESTIVAL will 

offer concerts in venues across Exmoor and Dartmoor 

from 11-20 October. As this is a special anniversary 

year for the publication of RD Blackmore’s LORNA 

DOONE, there will be a concert of words and music in 

All Saints’Church, Dulverton on 12 th October. I have 

distributed copies of the festival brochure to the TIC 

and Arts & Crafts and you may also find them on the 

table at the back of the church.

Two Moors Festival 2019 

With one year to go before it hits its twentieth birthday, 

the Two Moors Festival is now more than a force to be 

reckoned with in Britain’s classical music events. 

By its very quirky nature of taking world-class artists into 

tiny venues such as Culbone Church or venturing to the 

top of Dunkery Beacon with a Scottish piper in tow, it 

reaches out to a diverse audience wishing to feast on 

William Byrd one moment and the Bonny Banks of Loch 

Lomond a few hours later, with a bit of Beethoven along 

the way. 

Exmoor is in for a treat this year with a dinner concert 

taking place in Dunster’s Tithe Barn. Here the mouthwatering 

feast will be complemented with a delicious musical programme of Mozart, 

Gershwin and Stephen Sondheim to be performed by Spanish soprano, Lorena Paz and 

baritone, Malachy Frame. 

Dunster’s Church, with its good acoustics, is the ideal place for the Young Musicians 

winners recital. Incidentally, these are not your average teenage instrumentalists for 

they are of a standard comparable to BBC Young Musician of the Year finalists. DO go 

as they deserve as much support as possible. Flautists, a violinist, oboist and cellist are 

in the impressive line-up. 

Not to be out done, Dulverton features just as strongly. A good mix of concerts are on 

offer too – chamber music, organ as well as piano recitals (the last given by Imogen 

Cooper) and a late night ‘gig’ with the talented accordion player, Iosif Purits, are on the 

list. 

Dulverton is a favourite destination for concert-goers and in spite of the church pews 

that give sitters full marks for straight backs, people flock to this gem of a little town 

nestling in the heart of Exmoor. With collaboration between members of Dulverton’s 

Traders’ Association and the Festival’s Administrator, Sarah Vertigan, there is 

increasing community involvement. There is no denying the fact that local businesses 

benefit from the influx of visitors. 

The festival takes place in October. It certainly lives up to its slogan ‘Extraordinary 

Music in Remarkable Places’. If you like classical music performed at the highest level, 

then this annual event is a must. Visitors won’t be disappointed, that’s for sure!

Congratulations to all the talented cast and creatives from Pleasure Dome Open Air 

Theatre Company who helped celebrate the 150 th anniversary of Lorna Doone by 

bringing some spectacular evening shows to the Valley of Rocks during August. 

‘Darianna and the Lodgers' got everyone hoppin' an' boppin' at the 'Village Inn' the other 

night; just as they did a couple of weeks before at the Maritime Festival. Many locals had 

enjoyed that night so they were well up for another dose of refreshingly different music 

played by five great musician/singers. Darianna herself is an awesome sight as she belts 

out song after song with her excellent, powerful voice and her squeeze-box. She yanks and 

squeezes the thing with such vigour and skill that I presumed her uninhibited style owed 

much to the precaution that Boudicca-like she wore an iron breastplate. She also played, 

though not simultaneously, rhythm guitar. It was a lovely warm night and, the bar being 

fairly full, many people gathered in the street outside. The large crowd included many 

holidaymakers and the singing along and the dancing showed just what fun this 

community can have. Bev tells me she has several great acts arranged for the next few 

weeks so it's up to us all to give our full support when our venues go to the expense of 

providing us with entertainment. Let’s get together and ensure that the fun goes on well 

past the end of the season.

The challenge of providing homes for future generations 

Like so many rural communities we face the requirement of providing homes for local 

young people. This presents a unique and difficult challenge for our villages, given the 

very special setting and glorious backdrop set in the heart of Exmoor. 

The only open area in Lynton is currently the site of the bowling and tennis courts 

complex. 

Already a local group has approached the North Devon District Council with proposals 

to acquire and build on the area. 

Is this really the spot for a housing development? Are there better opportunities that 

would not result in the loss of the village’s only green amenity area? Should we look 

for a better option that would not result in the loss of one of our only open spaces? 

Lydiate Lodge is lying empty and is an example of a site that could be used to provide 

homes for our youngsters without the loss of valuable community amenities. It is vital 

that local people have their say on the future of any development proposals for our 

Community. Please make your views known to local councillors, the North Devon 

Council and the Exmoor National Park Authority.

News from the Exmoor Pony Centre 

Ashwick, Dulverton TA22 9QE 

Despite a month of mixed and sometimes pretty hairy weather there was still plenty 

going on at the Pony Centre with trekking, taster sessions, a Teddy Bear’s Picnic and 

summer cream tea afternoons. With the holiday season in full swing, activity days 

were held every Thursday throughout August with all the usual riding activities plus 

delicious cream teas served in the Green Room. 

We are delighted the Pony Centre has been accepted as a Learning Destination for 

the Children’s University so we hope those of you who are members will come and 

meet our Exmoor Ponies, challenge yourself on our Interactive Quiz Board, and earn a 

stamp for your passport. 

We had a very successful visit from 18 children from St Dubricius First School in 

Porlock. The outing was a surprise present for them as they were leaving to go up to 

Middle School and they had a really enjoyable time riding, grooming and learning 

about the ponies.

Park's 70 th birthday Picnic celebration 

at Simonsbath on 17 th July. Linzi, 

Louise, Lydia and Barry manned our 

stand and chatted to HRH the Duchess 

of Cornwall when she came over to say 

hello to our ponies, Rama and Tom.

the Centre are: 

Pony Rides (the minimum age for riding 

is 4 years old and there is a 12 stone 

weight limit). 

Pony Grooming; Crafts & Games; Refreshments (cakes, sandwiches) served by our 

volunteers in our warm Green Room Building.
