St Austell Brewery’s award-winning pub and hotel estate spans the South West 

ranging from Bristol in the east, to the Isles of Scilly in the west and includes nearly 

180 pubs, hotels and inns. Many of the South West’s most famous pubs are part of 

the St Austell Brewery estate and you will usually find one of our pubs at the heart 

of every community.

The Barley Sheaf, currently 

closed, had a great reputation 

as the town’s leading live music 

venue, attracting local and 

national talent weekly, with 

artists providing varied types 

of music and comedy to suit all

We are willing to undertake a 

joint investment to reinvigorate 

the site and we are happy to 

discuss proposals. 

The property consists of a single 

bar with slate flooring, open 

fire, stage, pool table and a 

skittle alley. A good sized rear 

courtyard/covered decked area 

and a small kitchen area. 

This is a rare opportunity to run 

an iconic pub close to Hayle 

Sands, the current tenants 

have been in the site since 1975 

serving the many tourists and 

locals that frequent the pub.

Cocktails 

Spirits and cocktails appear to be stealing the limelight at the moment 

as the sexy drinks category, while ‘Steady Eddie’ wine sometimes 

feels like the frumpy cousin in the corner. 

Why not piggyback on the popularity of cocktails and the rising trend 

of spritz drinks by testing out these fresh and exciting recipes? They all 

went down a treat at our recent Bristol Trade Show and we’re certain your 

customers will love them too... 

White Wine Siesta 

Ingredients: 

50ml Tanti Petali Pinot Grigio, 12.5ml tequila, 12.5ml 

Campari, 12.5ml grapefruit juice, 12.5ml lime juice, 

12.5ml sugar syrup. 

Method: 

Shake all ingredients and serve over ice in an old 

fashioned tumbler. Garnish with a wedge of grapefruit. 

Rosé Mojito 

Ingredients: 

50ml Falling Petal White Zinfandel, 25ml white rum, 85g 

pineapple chunks, 6 mint leaves, 4 lime wedges, 12.5ml 

sugar syrup, soda water. 

Method: 

Muddle lime wedges, mint and pineapple in the bottom 

of a high ball glass. Build all the ingredients over ice and 

garnish with mint and pineapple.

Shiraz Bramble 

Ingredients: 

50ml gin, 25ml lemon juice, 25ml sugar syrup, 

25ml Yallaroo Shiraz. 

Method: 

Shake all ingredients except the wine then serve over ice 

in a tumbler. Float the red wine on top and garnish with a 

lemon wedge. 

B&B Spritz 

Ingredients: 

25ml bourbon, 25ml Chambord, 75ml Prosecco 

Borgo SanLeo, 25ml soda water, 2 squeezes of lemon, 

raspberries, blackberries, slices of lemon. 

Method: 

Build all the ingredients in a large wine glass filled with 

ice. Garnish with slices of lemon and a blackberry. 

English Garden Spritz 

Ingredients: 

25ml gin, 25ml elderflower liqueur, 75ml Prosecco Borgo 

SanLeo, 25ml soda water, lemon juice, mint leaves, slices 

of lemon, slices of cucumber. 

Method: 

Build all the ingredients in a large wine glass filled with 

ice. Garnish with slices of lemon, cucumber and mint.

An ever-growing number of consumers are drinking less, but better. 

This has resulted in an increase in demand for premium spirits. With gin sales on the rise, vodka 

has slowed and dark spirits are experiencing growth – Tequila and Mezcal made an enormous 

leap in volumes in 2018.

(almost 3 billion litres in 2018). Vodka brands have taken a different approach to the 

sickly-sweet gimmicks of five years ago and are focusing on a more sophisticated,

INGREDIENTS 

HOW TO MAKE IT 

50ml Malibu 

75ml Pineapple Juice 

50ml Coconut Milk 

10ml Lime Juice 

5ml Grenadine 

Fill a cocktail shaker with ice and add the Malibu, 

pineapple juice, coconut milk and lime juice. 

Shake well and strain into a hurricane glass filled 

with ice. Drizzle in the grenadine to create a 

dripping blood effect. Garnish with pineapple 

leaves and a toy spider. 

Bloody Death 

INGREDIENTS 

50ml Dead Man’s Fingers 

Spiced Rum 

90ml Tomato Juice 

10ml Cranberry Juice

Add the Dead Man’s Fingers Spiced 

Rum, tomato juice, cranberry juice and

black pepper.

INGREDIENTS 


40ml Bacardí Carta Blanca Rum 

20ml Blood Orange Juice 

20ml Lime Juice 

2tsp Caster Sugar 

2 dashes of Angustora Bitters 

10ml Grenadine 

Bat-shaped Jelly Sweets 

6-10 Mint Leaves 

Dissolve sugar with Bacardí Carta Blanca Rum, 

blood orange juice and lime juice, then add half 

of the mint leaves, bitters and crushed ice. Mix 

well and top with more crushed ice. Float the 

grenadine on top before garnishing with the rest 

of the mint leaves and bat jelly sweets

INGREDIENTS 


25ml Amaretto 

250ml Brothers 

Toffee Apple Cider 

Crushed Ice 

Add crushed ice to your glass of choice 

before adding the Amaretto. Top up the 

glass with the Brothers Toffee Apple 

cider. Garnish with slices of apple and 

enjoy with a toffee or two. 

Chase Halloween 

Marmalade Sour 

INGREDIENTS 


60ml Chase Marmalade Vokda 

30ml Lemon Juice 

15ml Sugar Syrup 

2 dashes of Angustora Bitters 

Half an Egg White 

1 slice of Candied Orange 

Add the ingredients to a cocktail shaker filled

ice-filled rocks glass before garnishing with a

70ml Conker Cold Brew 

Coffee Liqueur 

30ml Chilled Still Water 

Fill a coupe or martini glass with ice and water 

and set aside. Add the ingredients to a cocktail 

shaker full of ice and shake for at least 15 

seconds. Tip out the water and ice from your 

chosen glass before double straining the shaken 

cocktail into the now chilled glass.

40ml Guinness

Meet Colwith Farm Distillery 

As part of our new ‘Meet The Distiller’ feature, we are travelling the length and breadth of the 

South West to bring you the latest information from some of your favourite drinks producers. 

Next on our travels is Colwith Farm Distillery, where Emma Oakland and Karen Balman from 

our Free Trade team met with founder and Master Distiller, Steve Dustow. 

olwith Farm Distillery is 

Cornwall’s first ‘plough to 

bottle’ distillery, founded upon five 

generations of farming history. 

Whereas most craft distilleries 

buy-in mass produced ethanol, at 

Colwith Farm Distillery, everything 

is delicately produced from scratch 

- on a single estate. In terms of 

provenance, authenticity and quality, 

put simply - it doesn’t get any better. 

The idea to build the region’s first 

plough to bottle distillery was 

developed by brothers Steve & Chris 

in 2010. Producing premium spirits 

represented the perfect way to add 

value to the crops produced on 

Colwith Farm. 

Stafford Dustow (namesake of 

Stafford’s Gin) moved to Colwith 

Farm, near Lanlivery in 1904 and 

five generations of the family have 

passionately farmed the soils ever 

since. At present, the father and 

son team of Mike and Chris are 

responsible for growing the crops 

that are transformed into premium 

spirits. Steve and Sophie look after 

the distillery, whilst Granddad Clive, 

now in his 80’s, keeps an eye on 

general proceedings and tends to the 

animals. 

Their crops are grown within a few 

miles of the distillery and thereafter, 

every step of the production 

process is delicately carried out 

in-house. From preparing the wash, 

fermenting, distilling, rectifying 

and finally bottling. Even the water 

used in the production process rises 

from an aquifer situated beneath 

the distillery. It is much more 

challenging, time consuming and 

costly to produce spirits this way - 

but they truly believe it’s worth it. 

Due to the variety of crops being 

grown on Colwith Farm, and the 

complexity of the equipment in the 

distillery, a plethora of premium 

spirits can be lovingly crafted from 

one site. Their Aval Dor Vodka 

(the Cornish word for potato) is 

crafted from King Edward potatoes. 

Stafford’s Gin is made by infusing 

a blend of botanicals from Colwith 

Farm and further afield with Aval 

Dor Vodka. And their whiskey 

project - well you’ll just have to go 

and see them to find out...

Exactly what it says on the tin! We grow 

and harvest the potatoes used to make 

our gin and vodka on our fifth-generation 

family farm. Every step of the process is 

done here – on a single estate. 

WHY IS KEEPING EVERYTHING IN 

HOUSE IMPORTANT TO YOU? 

SD: 

As we do everything, growing the potato 

right through to hand bottling our spirits, 

there is a lot to monitor and manage. Our 

strength is our weakness! We spend six days 

a week in the distillery making world class 

spirits so sometimes it is hard to find time 

for admin, marketing, accounts etc. This 

said – we wouldn’t have it any other way.

We can control every step of the intricate 

process to make sure the product is perfect. 

It takes six months to grow the perfect 

potatoes, our delicious Cornish potatoes 

are used at all of Rick Stein’s restaurants 

and take-aways, then six weeks to make 

the vodka. Ensuring the product we make 

is world class. This is a family business 

and it means everything to us to produce 

Cornwall’s first plough to bottle spirits.

AND WHAT IS THE MOST ENJOYABLE? 

Firstly, working with the family. My 

dad and brother are always on the farm, 

grandad visits daily, my little boy was here 

yesterday, and my wife does the accounts. 

We have a small, passionate team, who 

we consider our extended family – they 

are from the local village. And of course, 

knowing that we turn our humble potatoes 

into Aval Dor Vodka which won silver 

in Best Vodka in the World this year is 

enjoyable. 

SD: 

Well this is the realisation of an eight year 

dream for our family. Back in 2010 we 

started looking into it and now we are set 

up to produce any spirit from scratch. We 

built a visitor centre because of the huge 

amount of interest at events and host guided 

tours, a gin masterclass and other bespoke 

events.
