Paris, Ville lumière, Versailles et son château, joyau du classicisme ; pour le photographe
Nicolas Ruel, c’est ici que le projet Cityscape a commencé, en 2007, et c’est également
en ces lieux emblématiques que de nouvelles avenues artistiques allaient être explorées
en 2018. Toujours fasciné par la double exposition captée sur le vif, l’artiste cherche à
épurer la forme, à enrichir le contenu, notamment en y incluant la présence humaine
pour dynamiser la composition tout en approfondissant le sujet. Les boulevards, les
parcs et les jardins sont désormais peuplés et, plus encore, un parallèle est initié entre
l’humain et sa représentation dans l’histoire de l’art, ne serait-ce que par la présence
des sculptures et des peintures qui parent le paysage et l’architecture. Il y a les
personnages mythologiques rencontrés le long de l’Allée Royale, près du bassin de
Latone à Versailles, les héros et les déesses posant dans d’innombrables peintures du
Louvre, sans oublier les exploits de Louis XIV qui garnissent la voûte de style baroque
de la galerie des Glaces, peinte par Charles Le Brun. Un nouveau récit prend forme à
tout coup grâce à la double exposition. Il s’agissait de saisir autrement la grandeur de
ces chefs-d’œuvre captés à hauteur d’homme, mais plus grands que nature.
Paris, the City of Lights, Versailles and its chateau, a jewel of classicism; for photographer
Nicolas Ruel, these emblematic sites are where his project Cityscape began, in 2007,
and where new creative ventures would unfold in 2018. Still intrigued by the technique
of spontaneously shot double exposures, Ruel seeks to further refine its form and enrich
its content, namely by introducing a human element that energizes the composition while
deepening its subject matter. The boulevards, parks and gardens are now filled with people,
and a parallel is drawn between humans and their representation in art history through
the sculptures and paintings that embellish the landscape and architecture. There are the
mythological figures along the Royal Way and in the Latona Basin at Versailles, the heroes
and goddesses that pose in countless paintings at the Louvre, and of course the exploits of
Louis XIV that adorn the baroque vaulted ceiling of the Hall of Mirrors, painted by Charles Le
Brun. Through the use of double exposure, new narratives emerge that capture the grandeur
of these masterpieces in another light; from a human perspective still, but larger than life.

À PROPOS DE L’ARTISTE
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Depuis 2006, le photographe montréalais a parcouru soixantedix
villes disséminées dans quarante pays et cinq continents
pour constituer un corpus duquel trois séries principales ont
fait leur marque, à savoir, Cityscape, Civilization et Industrial.
Ces séries reconfigurent le tracé de villes emblématiques et
rendent hommage aux splendeurs architecturales grâce à une
technique de double exposition in camera. Les tirages grand
format sur acier inoxydable, consacrés aux séries Cityscape
et Industrial, mettent en valeur la monumentalité des sujets
avivés par la surface métallique et les encres chatoyantes. Le
bronze fait ensuite son entrée comme support photographique
dans la série Civilization, qui revisite des sites archéologiques,
des sanctuaires et des cités antiques dont les vestiges sont
chargés d’histoire.
Ses œuvres ont fait l’objet de nombreuses expositions
individuelles et collectives à Montréal, Toronto, New York,
Paris, Tokyo, en plus d’intégrer plusieurs collections publiques
et privées, notamment Air Canada, Cirque du Soleil, Musée
des beaux-arts de Montréal, Museum Europäischer Kulturen,
Microsoft, Power Corporation et The Rothschild Group.
Il a également collaboré à des magazines internationaux
tels que Vogue et National Geographic. Nicolas Ruel est le
prochain artiste Envoy sélectionné par Four Seasons Hôtels
& Résidences. Il est représenté au Canada par la Galerie
de Bellefeuille.
Since 2006, Montreal-based photographer Nicolas Ruel travelled
seventy cities scattered across forty countries and five continents
to produce his main series, Cityscape, Civilization and Industrial,
featuring emblematic cities with a futuristic angle; a tribute to
historical sites, architectural splendors and lifestyles of the 21st
century. The artist has developed an in-camera double-exposure
method—a prevalent feature in his work—to create unique visual
signatures. The large-format stainless steel prints, dedicated to
Cityscape and Industrial series, highlight the monumentality of his
subjects, which bring the metallic surfaces to life with shimmering
inks. Bronze first appeared as a photographic support in the
series Civilization, which revisits the historically charged vestiges
of archeological sites, sanctuaries, and ancient cities.
His works have been featured in solo and group exhibitions in
Montreal, Toronto, New York, Paris, Tokyo. His photographs
are part of numerous public and private collections, namely, Air
Canada, Cirque du Soleil, Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Museum
Europäischer Kulturen, Power Corporation, Microsoft and The
Rothschild Group. He has also collaborated to international
magazines such as Vogue and National Geographic. Nicolas Ruel
is the next Envoy artist in residence at the Four Seasons Hotels
& Resorts. He is represented in Canada by Galerie de Bellefeuille.
