New CHIRplus_BC v. 5.6.0 Release includes DVB-T2 and ISDB-T Planning Functions
The new CHIRplus_BC version 5.6.0
for broadcast planning and coordination
now covers DVB-T2 as well as
ISDB-T planning functions, whereas
the last major release 5.4.0 concerned
multi-core calculations.
The new version has already been
delivered to customers under
maintenance.
DVB-T2, which is also subject to ITU’s
Recommendation BT.1877, “Error-correction,
data framing, modulation and
emission methods for second generation
of digital terrestrial television
broadcasting systems”, offers enhanced
fl exibility to broadcasters,
ranging from physical layer pipes
(PLPs) to MISO (Multiple-Input Single
Output). The advantage of MISO is that
two variants of the signal can be transmitted
from different sites, offering
more network gain than the SFN operation
known from DVB-T.
Many countries – especially developing
countries – are considering adopting
this second-generation system
immediately after their future analogue
switch-off (ASO). South Africa
and Mozambique in Africa and Serbia
in Europe have decided to take a short
cut and change directly from analogue
technology to DVB-T2.
CHIRplus_BC takes into consideration
the higher complexity which comes
with the DVB-T2 system, with more
parameters than the classical DVB-T,
and offers enhanced confi guration
possibilities and pre-sets for the various
T2-constellations and reception
modes.
As not all combinations of pilot pattern,
constellation and guard interval,
etc, are possible
according to the
DVB-T2 specifi cation,
the user is
only able to select
valid combinations
in CHIRplus_BC.
The “pilot pattern”
selection shows
only those in green
that result in a valid
combination.
The 5.6.0 version of
CHIRplus_BC also
We provide you with everything you
need in broadcast. Our portfolio includes
software, consulting, engineering
and measurement services for the
design, planning and optimisation of
broadcast networks. Training on technologies,
standards and regulations as
well as transmission container commissioning
complete our area of
expertise. We even offer antenna
measurements via a remote controlled
miniature helicopter – an unprecedented
service for cost-effective and
accurate measurements.
includes the ISDB-T network processor
for all customers with DTV option.
This system, originally developed in
and for Japan, has been adopted
(with slight modifi cation) in Brazil and
from there spread throughout South
America.

Nationwide Hybrid TV DVB-T2 Network Study in Asian Country
A private broadcasting
company in an Asian country
asked LS telcom to carry
out a nationwide DVB-T2
study in order to offer
hybrid TV to its customers.
LS telcom designed several nationwide
single frequency networks (SFN)
based on the required data capacity
and reception mode. The objective
was to optimise the system in terms
of the number of sites used and the
targeted coverage area and population.
The study included the selection
of the most suitable DVB-T2 system
technology.
LS telcom also carried out interference
analyses with respect to analogue
TV in the country, analogue and
digital TV on borders and with respect
to non-broadcasting services.
This went along with measures to
reduce or avoid interference.
At the end of the study LS telcom set
up the Request for Information (RFI)
DVB-T/T2 countrywide network design for Montenegro
On behalf of the public broadcaster
RDC an initial planning
study was performed analysing
the level of DVB-T nationwide
multiplex coverage for Montenegro.
Network
Procurement
and Project
Management
As part of this work LS telcom performed
a Conformity Check (in
accordance with GE06 procedure),
Network Optimisation and SFN Delay
Optimisation. The planning result
showed coverage for fi xed reception
for more than 95 % of the population in
each sub-area and overall for Monte-
Implementation
and
Installation
PlanningOptimisation
■ Procurement and Project Management
• Preparation and evaluation of your
procurement documents
• Development of vendor evaluation
model
• Vendor Evaluation
• Integration of components from different
vendors to one comprehensive
system
• Vendor Pre-Selection
■ Implementation and Installation
• DTT container installation
negro, exceeding the performance
requirement of the customer. This was
based on 119 transmitter sites in 4
sub-areas.
In the meantime LS telcom was asked
to plan a county-wide DVB-T2 network
with the same coverage requirements
given for the fi rst planning task.
• Commissioning and Acceptance
Testing
• Coverage Measurements
• Human Exposure Measurement
• Antenna System Measurements
• Monitoring Measurements
• Documentation and Training
■ Optimisation
A broadcast network in operation needs to
be optimised and maintained to guarantee
continuous quality of service and careful
use of network resources over time.
We optimise your existing network with
regards to
• quality of service
• coverage
• technology cost
• operational expenditure
• or any other parameter that you
would like us to check
including all the engineering and system
details necessary to build the
system. The RFI was sent to the
potential suppliers. Finally the submitted
DVB-T2 proposals were analysed
and evaluated based on several
criteria like equipment, price quote,
schedule, customer service plan and
by rotated constellations and
Q-delay.
UHF Television Spectrum Audit - Nigeria
LS of South Africa recently performed
a spectrum audit of UHF television
frequency usage in Nigeria.
The idea behind this was to create an
accurate frequency database to
determine which frequencies will be
avail-able for DTT implementation.
The sources of information used
during the investigation included the
Geneva 06 analogue and digital frequency
lists, the National Broadcasting
Commission (NBC) list of
frequency assignments and the information
obtained during our national
frequency meas-urements.
The measurements were done using a
Rohde & Schwarz EB200 receiver
In parallel to recent innovations in the
area of fl ight control and embedded
electronics of UAV, there has been
important progress in data transmission
and storage of measurement
devices. We have identifi ed that combining
the two; there are numerous
new market opportunities.
Our pioneer product HELI-Mon, a
During the past three years LS of
South Africa has increased its staff so
that four installation teams are available
for installation projects at all times.
The containers, which are pre-manufactured
or modifi ed to house telecommunication
equipment, are
delivered to the new assembly facility
in Johannesburg.
There, the LS team fi ts out the container
units with transmission equipment
and all electrical wiring, RF cabling
and control wiring. Once all equipment
is installed and interconnected, it is
exposed to a range of tests as part of
A study using the broadcast planning
tool CHIRplus_BC illustrates
the feasibility of large scale SFNs
(Single Frequency Networks). Based
on the DVB-T network in Southern
Germany the coverage for a fixed
reception scenario and for a portable
reception scenario is evaluated.
This definitely makes it the first
choice when introducing DTT or
adding HD services to the terrestrial
platform. However, accurate
definition of the key parameters of
together with the LS telcom
MONITORplus v4660 product installed
on a Laptop with an external
GPS. The measurements included the
FM band (87.6 to 107.9 MHz), VHF
television band (174 to 238 MHz and
246 to 254 MHz) as well as UHF television
band (470 to 854 MHz).
The results were analysed with the
LS telcom software CHIRplus_BC
v560. Our investigation included the
following:
■ Licensed operational frequencies
■ Licensed, not operational frequencies
■ Unlicensed operational frequencies
■ Spare frequencies available for
DTT implementation
remote controlled miniature helicopter
is the result of our long-term experience
and expertise in radio monitoring
and frequency management. We take
radio monitoring one step further: you
can now carry out 3D antenna pattern
measurements and EMC analyses in a
way it was never possible before.
the pre-commissioning. The container
is then transported to the transmission
site, where it is connected to the
transmission network and to the
external power supply.
The fi nal commissioning “on-site”
ensures that the equipment can be put
into operation.
This facility provides the LS telcom
group with the capability to confi gure
and install mobile and transportable
radio systems. These can be shipped
from South Africa to any destination
around the globe.
the DVB-T2 system is more critical
in planning DVB-T2 networks than it
is for DVB-T.
LS telcom offers consulting services
to find the right parameter set
to optimally match your business
case.
The White Paper can be downloaded
from our website www.LStelcom.com
in the section download/white
papers.
We also identifi ed new frequencies for
coordination in order to increase frequency
availability especially during
the dual illumination period.
Wave Propagation
Model Calibration -
Zambia
LS of South Africa was recently
requested by a client to perform wave
propagation model calibration for a
client in Zambia.
The calibration was done for CHIRplus_BC
and more specifi cally for
DVB-T2 coverage predictions.
A FSH6 Spectrum Analyser from
Rohde & Schwarz with a GP600
antenna was used together with a GPS
and a laptop for the data logging. The
antenna pattern and gain were analysed,
cable losses were measured
and the complete measuring system
was calibrated. The measurements
included all morpho classes over a
large coverage area.
The results were analysed with
CHIRplus_BC v560 and all the
measurements were then divided
into the different morpho classes.
Our wave propagation prediction
model was then calibrated against
the measured values. A sample of
such results is included below.
