elves and elfesses have been toiling all year in their workshops to make the most
perfect hand-crafted gifts for those on your list (and I’m absolutely certain you
deserve a little something for yourself as well).

H4C is growing up fast - eight already!! We’ve lost our milk teeth and now have
a full set of proper grown up incisors, canines and molars. It’s alright - we don’t
bite, but we will be doing an alarming amount of smiling with them ;-) We really
hope you’ll join in with our childlike happiness and fun - after all, ’tis the season to
be jolly ’n’ all that! Spread the word – tell all your friends – better still, bring them

Here at the Workhouse
Chapel we are doing our very
best to reduce the use of plastic in
packaging (and lots of other places too!).
Any bubble wrap we use is either on its
second go round, or it’s biodegradable.
We use recycled paper bags and tape and
will be trialling a new, totally recycled
and recyclable packing system.
Most of us even put our greetings
cards in compostable
cellulose wrappers.

Allow me to introduce the team
Yep! That’s me with the glasses - I’m Rose and Handmade for
Christmas is my baby… well actually more of a ravening, out of
control eight year old!! I like to pretend I’m in charge - please
don’t disillusion me…
Then there’s Bob, my long-suffering, neither better nor worse, other
half. He keeps the wood pile well-stocked and feeds the enormous
wood-burner (which, coincidentally, is also a ravening eight year old),
so you have him to thank for the warmth and cosiness. You’ll be
lucky to catch a glimpse of him, as he tends to get sent home
for bad behaviour ;-)
And let’s not forget the team of lovely, willing, helpful Elves -
they’ll be oh-so-happy to help you with your shopping, get you
a cup of something warming and generally be cheerily useful.
I simply couldn’t manage without them.

More about the exhibitors and their Accidental Green-ness
Each year I ask the exhibitors to fill in a questionnaire, and those of you who’ve
seen this little Directory in past years will be familiar with their holiday habits,
how they like their potatoes cooked, their Christmas trees decorated and which
is their favourite dunking biscuit. This year I’ve delved deeper into what fills them
with pride and what drives them. I’m completely thrilled, but not surprised, to
announce that their underlying motives are true, good and deeply honourable.
They are driven by a desire to save old crafts, to preserve and conserve our
environment, to be the best they can be and to make the best they can make.
They are proud of their children, proud that they can make a living from what
they love doing best and that what they do brings so much pleasure to others.
And as for their eco credentials… well I just had to write a
poem to celebrate their unwitting excellence!
The Tale of the Chapel Chicken
Once upon a Handmade for Christmas there was a bad Mr Fox
(well not really bad - it’s just the nature of a fox to be a little bit wicked)
who caught a poor unsuspecting chicken, planning to take her home to
Mrs Fox for their supper. BUT, as Mr Fox passed the Workhouse Chapel,
the chicken made good her escape and sought sanctuary within.
She now lives happily in the Chapel and spends her time having
more fun than a chicken really should! Keep an eye out for her

When you work with your hands
and invent with your heart
It’s a losing battle to try and stay smart
Strange passions demand stranger fashions
So we recycle, reuse, make do and mend
And folk just think “Artist!”- so bang on trend...
When the frost bites and the east wind
blows cruel
You won’t find us wasting scarce fossil fuel
Three jumpers, two vests, long johns and a hat
A scarf, salopettes and, yes we look fat
And the bulk makes it nigh on impossible
to bend
But hey!
We’re accidentally green - we’re bang on trend.
It’s not that we’re nosy - we’re just keen to know
Where was this clay dug?
Where did that tree grow?
Why is the sea that certain shade of
greeny- blue?
And because we care, we raise awareness too.
It’s how the curious mind has always been -
Turns out that now we’re unwittingly green
We’re a bit of a Womble - always hoping to find
An interesting thing that’s been left behind
By the everyday folk - and then when we do
We break and reshape, remake it anew
And we add to the hoard of useful board
To the sack of wool that’s already full
Pile up the wood that might be good….
We carefully store each odd and end
‘Cos guess what?!!
Yep! we’re green - we’re so on trend
The tools of our trade are well worn and trusted
Talk about patina!- these are encrusted
With history - and memories of craftsmen long
gone
And when our time comes we’ll pass them on
To those that we taught, and the skills will survive -
just maybe they’ll help keep our planet alive
We make because we have to - it’s in our DNA
It’s written in our genes - no choice -
it just won’t go away.
Please don’t try to stop us, if you’re any
kind of friend
Just remember that we’re green and accidentally
bang on trend.
