TECHNOLOGY
INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

IT DEFINITION
Stands for "Information Technology," and is pronounced "I.T." It refers to anything
related to computing technology, such as networking, hardware, software, the Internet,
or the people that work with these technologies. Many companies now have IT
departments for managing the computers, networks, and other technical areas of their
businesses. IT jobs include computer programming, network administration, computer
engineering, Web development, technical support, and many other related
occupations. Since we live in the "information age," information technology has become
a part of our everyday lives. That means the term "IT," already highly overused, is
here to stay.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
• Information technology (IT) is the use of computers to
store, retrieve, transmit, and
manipulate data, [1] or information, often in the context of a
business or other enterprise. [2] IT is considered to be a
subset of information and communications technology (ICT).
An information technology system (IT system) is
generally an information system, a communications
system or, more specifically speaking, a computer system –
including all hardware, software and peripheral equipment
– operated by a limited group of users.

ELECTRONIC DATA PROCESSING
• Data storage - Early electronic computers such as Colossus made use of punched
tape, a long strip of paper on which data was represented by a series of holes, a
technology now obsolete. [13] Electronic data storage, which is used in modern
computers, dates from World War II, when a form of delay line memory was
developed to remove the clutter from radar signals, the first practical application of
which was the mercury delay line. [14] The first random-access digital storage device
was the Williams tube, based on a standard cathode ray tube, [15] but the
information stored in it and delay line memory was volatile in that it had to be
continuously refreshed, and thus was lost once power was removed. The earliest form
of non-volatile computer storage was the magnetic drum, invented in 1932 [16] and
used in the Ferranti Mark 1, the world's first commercially available
general-purpose electronic computer. [17]

IT SOFTWARE AND HARDWARE
• IT includes several layers of physical equipment (hardware), virtualization and
management or automation tools, operating systems and applications
(software) used to perform essential functions. User devices, peripherals and
software, such as laptops, smartphones or even recording equipment, can be
included in the IT domain. IT can also refer to the architectures, methodologies
and regulations governing the use and storage of data.

COMMON IT CAREERS:
• Chief information officer: This person is responsible for IT and computer
systems that support the enterprise's goals.
• Chief technology officer: This person sets all technology goals and policies
within an organization.
• IT director: This person is responsible for the function of all of the business's
technology tools and processes. This role is commonly called IT manager or IT
leader.

IT EDUCATION AND JOB FUNCTIONS
• A team of administrators and other technical staffers deploy and manage the
company's IT infrastructure and assets. IT teams depend on a wide range of
specialized information and technology skills and knowledge to support equipment,
applications and activities. Third-party contractors and IT vendor support personnel
augment the IT team.
• The information technology profession is extremely diverse. IT workers can specialize
in fields like software development, application management, hardware components
such as desktop support, server or storage administrator and network architecture.
Many businesses seek IT professionals with mixed or overlapping skill sets.

COMPUTER NETWORKING AND INFORMATION
TECHNOLOGY
• As computing systems and capabilities continue expanding worldwide, "data overload" has
become an increasingly critical issue for many IT professionals. Efficiently processing huge
amounts of data to produce useful business intelligence requires large amounts of processing
power, sophisticated software, and human analytic skills.
• Teamwork and communication skills have also become essential for most businesses to
manage the complexity of IT systems. Many IT professionals are responsible for providing
service to business users who are not trained in computer networking or other information
technologies but who are instead interested in simply using IT as a tool to get their work
done efficiently.

CONCLUTION
Information Technology helps businesses, governments, and individuals increase their efficiency and
effectiveness. Rapid improvements in hardware and processing ability forces consumers to purchase
new, relevant technology. On a market level, this rapid turnover creates demand. From a firm's
perspective however, this can result in a lower customer retention rate. Regardless, organizations
are continuing to demand innovative technological solutions, leaving room for new entrants,
particularly those with a unique concept. Firms who are able to find a niche market - or one with
low competition - will find this industry attractive. Barriers to entry remain high when entering
existing markets though, therefore most potential entrants will find the overall industry unattractive.
