Visit Kaslo | Kaslo Guide 2019

Kaslo is surrounded by a vast mountain wilderness riven with rushing creeks and gorges, its centre of gravity the crystal clear depths of Kootenay Lake. Prospectors, lumbermen and speculators have come and gone and will be back; the adventurers stayed on. They’ve figured out, and perhaps you will too, that the real richness here is the freedom to be yourself, to explore. There are so many ways to do that, just read on. Have fun!

May Days
Kaslo’s first May Days was celebrated in
1892. Plan to share in the excitement
this year from May 18 to 20.
In the old days there was a unique “Prospectors’
Race” and the main event was a horse race
down Front Street, with prizes as high as $250.
Today, popular events are the Logger Sports,
the slo-pitch tournament (still going strong
after almost 40 years) and the Show & Shine.
There is always a May Days parade Monday
at noon. Afterwards, walk down to the
maypole in Vimy Park and watch the children
weave ribbons in a traditional maypole
dance, just as their parents and grandparents
did when theywere children.
The Logger Sports Show
Logger sports originated in Canadian logging
camps in the late 1800s. Competitors
from many countries look forward to Kaslo’s
show, the spring kickoff for the Canadian
western circuit. The individual events are
fast-paced and range from tree climbing an
80 foot spar pole to chopping through a 12
inch standing chop block to precariously
balancing on a springboard 10 feet in the
air! Log rolling is a crowd favourite – which
ends with competitors splashing into the
chilly water of the burling pond.
The logger sports grounds are on the shore
of Kootenay Lake. It’s a 2-day show, May 18
& 19 and the admission is free!
Show & Shine
May Days Sunday on Front Street is such a
friendly scene that it’s always a relief to the
car show organizers if some out-of-towners
agree to perform the necessary but pitfallladen
job of judging, even though usually
there are as many prizes as entrants. If
you see a spectacularly mustachioed man
in animated conversation, without doubt
you’ve spotted Dave B., one of the Show &
Shine organizers. Introduce yourself!
Annual Slo-Pitch Tourney
The rivalry resumes! Once a year, over ‘May
Long’, local teams and visitors from as far
away as Nelson, compete at this ultra-prestigious
tourney, just for the bragging rights.
