Visit Kaslo | Kaslo Guide 2019
Kaslo is surrounded by a vast mountain wilderness riven with rushing creeks and gorges, its centre of gravity the crystal clear depths of Kootenay Lake. Prospectors, lumbermen and speculators have come and gone and will be back; the adventurers stayed on. They’ve figured out, and perhaps you will too, that the real richness here is the freedom to be yourself, to explore. There are so many ways to do that, just read on. Have fun! Welcome to Kaslo! Photo: Ken Hewat Follow the footpath that skirts the town, through the bay, along the public beach areas, through the off leash dog zone – right to the Kaslo River. See centre map. If you’re used to city living where most people don’t know you and look the other way when you pass, prepare to be a little disconcerted. On the sidewalks in this small town there is a very good chance that the locals will smile and nod at you, say hello perhaps. Someone might even ask your opinion about something! Don’t be alarmed. This is normal – and this pattern of behaviour only gets worse as winter approaches. The best advice is to just go with it. Pretend you are a local, just for the time being. When you have to stop your car to allow the ducks to cross the road, sing loudly or daydream. Take a morning walk along the beach and obey that dog that has dropped a stick at your feet – there is no doubt that throwing it is what you are meant to do – or swim in the lake if it’s summer and your Kul Nijjar Managing Broker Real Life Real Estate body needs a wake-up call. Pay for last night’s indulgence at the Angry Hen or the Kaslo Hotel by trotting up Wardner Trail to the Viewpoint. Then be good all day and visit the galleries and shops, eat healthy snacks and meals, and finally stay up way too late after a rockin’ set at the BlueBelle and dance in the street with all your new friends. Repeat. Now you’re getting it. One of the first things you should do is simply wander about town. Every house is different, some are really, really small, quite a few are more than a century old. There are Victorian era beauties in the shade of majestic maples, while down on 3rd Street there’s a 4-plex that used to be a brothel (in the 1890s those entrepreneurial ladies were known as box-rustlers – they rustled out of boxes apparently.) kul@kulnijjar.ca 250.505.4722 Your Kootenay Property Matchmaker Buildings you can actually tour inside include the newly restored City Hall, the Langham Cultural Centre and the SS Moyie – a ship, not a building, and now a very interesting museum and our visitor centre. Read more about these places and others further on in this magazine.
