Visit Kaslo | Kaslo Guide 2019

Kaslo is surrounded by a vast mountain wilderness riven with rushing creeks and gorges, its centre of gravity the crystal clear depths of Kootenay Lake. Prospectors, lumbermen and speculators have come and gone and will be back; the adventurers stayed on. They’ve figured out, and perhaps you will too, that the real richness here is the freedom to be yourself, to explore. There are so many ways to do that, just read on. Have fun!

Welcome to Kaslo!
Photo: Ken Hewat
Follow the footpath that skirts the town, through the bay, along the public beach areas, through the off leash dog zone – right to the Kaslo River. See centre map.
If you’re used to city living where most
people don’t know you and look the other
way when you pass, prepare to be a little
disconcerted. On the sidewalks in this small
town there is a very good chance that the locals
will smile and nod at you, say hello perhaps.
Someone might even ask your opinion
about something!
Don’t be alarmed. This is normal – and this
pattern of behaviour only gets worse as winter
approaches. The best advice is to just go
with it. Pretend you are a local, just for the
time being.
When you have to stop your car to allow
the ducks to cross the road, sing loudly or
daydream. Take a morning walk along the
beach and obey that dog that has dropped
a stick at your feet – there is no doubt that
throwing it is what you are meant to do –
or swim in the lake if it’s summer and your
body needs a wake-up call. Pay for last
night’s indulgence at the Angry Hen or the
Kaslo Hotel by trotting up Wardner Trail to
the Viewpoint. Then be good all day and visit
the galleries and shops, eat healthy snacks
and meals, and finally stay up way too late
after a rockin’ set at the BlueBelle and dance
in the street with all your new friends.
Repeat.
Now you’re getting it.
One of the first things you should do is
simply wander about town. Every house is
different, some are really, really small, quite
a few are more than a century old. There
are Victorian era beauties in the shade of
majestic maples, while down on 3rd Street
there’s a 4-plex that used to be a brothel (in
the 1890s those entrepreneurial ladies were
known as box-rustlers – they rustled out of
boxes apparently.)
May Days
Kaslo’s first May Days was celebrated in
1892. Plan to share in the excitement
this year from May 18 to 20.
In the old days there was a unique “Prospectors’
Race” and the main event was a horse race
down Front Street, with prizes as high as $250.
Today, popular events are the Logger Sports,
the slo-pitch tournament (still going strong
after almost 40 years) and the Show & Shine.
There is always a May Days parade Monday
at noon. Afterwards, walk down to the
maypole in Vimy Park and watch the children
weave ribbons in a traditional maypole
dance, just as their parents and grandparents
did when theywere children.
The Logger Sports Show
Logger sports originated in Canadian logging
camps in the late 1800s. Competitors
from many countries look forward to Kaslo’s
show, the spring kickoff for the Canadian
western circuit. The individual events are
fast-paced and range from tree climbing an
80 foot spar pole to chopping through a 12
inch standing chop block to precariously
balancing on a springboard 10 feet in the
air! Log rolling is a crowd favourite – which
ends with competitors splashing into the
chilly water of the burling pond.
The logger sports grounds are on the shore
of Kootenay Lake. It’s a 2-day show, May 18
& 19 and the admission is free!
Show & Shine
May Days Sunday on Front Street is such a
friendly scene that it’s always a relief to the
car show organizers if some out-of-towners
agree to perform the necessary but pitfallladen
job of judging, even though usually
there are as many prizes as entrants. If
you see a spectacularly mustachioed man
in animated conversation, without doubt
you’ve spotted Dave B., one of the Show &
Shine organizers. Introduce yourself!
exceptional talent. Mountains rising over
10,000 feet from the lake are the backdrop
Lardeau Valley Harvest Festival
A great family event at the Lardeau Valley
Community Centre in Meadow Creek, a
35 minute drive north of Kaslo. Traditions
celebrated at the faire include old-fashioned
races and competitions, and the art and
skills of the farmer and small homesteader.
There will be lots of vendors, live music
and antique machinery demos. Bring your
pocketbook and shop early for Christmas!
Argenta Fall Faire
Argenta is justly famous for the quality of
its musicians. Enjoy live entertainment and
food and craft vendors. Once it gets dark,
the stage is set for the faire’s finale. Everyone
gathers in a circle and, in the middle of
a field, the stick monument is set afire.
of the race will last longer than the day.
Light Up
The big bonfire is lit at the top of Front
Street, the carolers are singing, and the
minor hockey kids are slinging hot chocolate.
All of this in downtown Kaslo after the
Santa Claus procession up the dark wintry
street, his passing triggering the illumination,
one storefront after another, of twinkly
and colourful displays of lights. Saturday,
November 30.
Kaslo Jamboree
The annual K-Jam (on the weekend before
Christmas) is old home week for the graduates
of Kaslo’s storied Minor Hockey Association.
They always have a lot of fun, they
usually raise a bit of money for charity, and
the players on the winning team get to hoist
the coveted Colander Cup.
Winter in the Forest
Some unusual events in this free outdoor
festival include human dogsled races, Swede
sawing competition and the water boil race.
Enjoy the sweet stickiness of maple taffy
on the snow, and hot homemade foods. Or
make your own bannock on a stick over the
bonfire. Local musicians and storytellers
will entertain you. On BC Family Day (February
18) join in on the fun at the Kaslo airstrip
Renew your spirit! From the mouth of the
Kaslo River all around to the protected
waters of Kaslo Bay, the pebble strewn and
sandy beaches are hot underfoot in summer
or windswept and serene on a calm winter’s
day. The clear fresh water of Kootenay Lake
lake, icy cold until midsummer, beckons
swimmers and paddlers in July and August.
Where the river rushes into the lake is also
a favourite spot for anglers fishing from the
shore or from a rowboat or canoe.
Bring your book and be alone, or hang with
your friends and chat. Solve all the world’s
problems! Toddlers splash in the shallow
natural pools released as the level of the
lake descends in June. Surprisingly few
motor boats disturb the tranquility, and the
view across the lake is unmarked by roads
and development.
Dogs OFF Leash Area
Let all (good) dogs run free! At the southern
end of the beach, between the skatepark
and the river mouth is where dog and doglovers
can enjoy off leash freedom.
Vimy Park
Meet me down at the ball game! Vimy Park,
spread out below lower Kaslo and close to
the beach, is where you’ll find the ball diamond,
a wide open grassy area to fly a kite
or play frisbee, and an adventure playground
for the kids. If it’s raining you can take cover
at the picnic shelter and there are washrooms
too, near the gazebo.
Kaslo Sk8Park
From bikes to skateboards,
the kids
ride them all. This
has to be the most
scenic skatepark
anywhere in the
world – right on the
beach, just north
of the Kaslo River
mouth.
LAKE FACTS
Main lake is 104 km long
Average width is 3.4 km
Depth est. 150m Altitude 532m
(varies seasonally by as much as 3m)
Surrounding mountains are the
Purcells and the Selkirks. Highest
peak is Mt Loki at 2,771 m (9,091 ft).
What did you do today, and where
have you been? “I played in Kaslo,”
said Josephine.
Moorage in Kaslo
Kaslo’s public wharf is in Kaslo Bay.
You can stay tied up to the dock for
48 hours free of charge. The very small
lagoon near the Moyie is a protected
swimming area for kids. Please no
motors of any kind in that area.
Kaslo Bay Park
This is the venue for the Kaslo Jazz Etc
Festival. It’s a good place to launch your
canoe or kayak from the sandy beach,
and there is a proper boat launch if you
brought your motorboat with you.
Tee time
We don’t like to brag, but… the Kaslo Golf
Course is beautiful! From the timberframe
clubhouse to the views from any
spot on the 9-hole course.
Occasionally you’ll see deer,
elk or even a bear strolling
across the greens, taking the
shortcut to the lake. There
are rental clubs and pull and
power carts, and motorcyclists
can get free club
rentals. It’s just above town,
to the south.
Kaslo Recreation Complex
The Complex includes a hockey
arena and two sheets on the
curling rink side. The Kaslo
Curling Club has a men’s,
women’s and mixed league, as
well as junior programs and a drop-in
night. There is an active and welcoming
social club. Go to www.kaslocurling.com
for more details.
The arena side is the home of the Kaslo
Minor Hockey Association. There are
several adult hockey clubs too, most a
combination of youth and oldies. Visit the
arena website www.kasloarena.ca to find
schedules for drop-in hockey and public
skating times. The Kaslo complex is one
of the benefits that encourages people and
families to move to Kaslo. It is a prized
amenity, providing recreation, social
activities, and pride… Every ice time is
There are two National Historic Sites in
Kaslo, the Village Hall on 4th Street and
the SS Moyie, the oldest intact passenger
sternwheeler in the world, on Front St.
Kaslo City Hall The Village Hall was
built in 1898 – the same year the SS Moyie
made her maiden voyage on Kootenay
Lake and 5 years after the founding of the
“City of Kaslo”. (Think about the soaring
optimism of 125 years ago implied by the
word ‘city’.) This graceful wooden building
on the corner of 4th Street and B Avenue
is the oldest wooden municipal hall on the
BC mainland and is a designated National
Historic Site. Take a self-guided tour. City
Hall is now wheelchair and scooter friendly
via the ramp and entryway on B Avenue.
The Langham Narrowly escaping
demolition in the 1970s, this building
on A Avenue and 5th Street has been reanimated
and repurposed a dozen or more
times in its 123 year history. When it first
opened its doors as a hotel in 1896, it was
described in the Sandon Streak as “one of
the most commodious residential quarters
in town, having the benefits of all modern
improvements in the way of electric lights,
baths, etc.”
The Langham is now a cultural centre. Its
WWII era history – when it served as tiny
apartments for families of Japanese descent
who had been forcibly displaced to BC’s
interior – is illuminated in the Japanese
Canadian Museum on the second and
third floors. Take a self-guided tour.
Kemball Memorial Centre
formerly the Provincial Government Building
This four-square brick building with a
walled front garden was built in 1911 to
serve as provincial government offices. The
courthouse occupied a large corner room.
The province sold the building to the
Village of Kaslo in 2009. Rest a spell in the
gardens; there is a picnic table under the
spreading maples.
SS Moyie When she was launched on
October 22, 1898, there were no roads, no
trains, and only foot, horse or mule travel
into these hidden mountain valleys. You
could not overstate this ship’s value, or the
affection the people in the many isolated
communities on Kootenay Lake felt for her
during her 60 years of faithful service.
Now dry-docked at the lower end of Front
Street, the ship is still a welcoming sight.
The SS Moyie is both Kaslo’s Visitor Centre
and a captivating museum that will appeal
to every member of the family.
St Andrew’s United Church
Last year St Andrew’s Church, like the
Village itself, celebrated its 125th year
anniversary. It’s as busy a place as it ever
was, now functioning as a concert venue
and a community hall. Kaslo’s Food Hub
occupies the basement and you can still
attend “saddlebag services” in the sanctuary
during the summer months.
Sacred Heart Catholic Church
People of faith have sought solace and
comfort in this little wooden church since
1902, and the tradition is still alive today.
How it came to be built is a colourful
story. The first priest, Stephan Coté, was a
stocky and powerful man. One night in the
mining town of Sandon, Coté accepted the
challenge to wrestle another man, likely a
hard rock miner, so long as he could stipulate
the prize, should he prevail and win
the bout. The prize? The challenger and his
backers would help him build his church
in Kaslo. Guess who won? Sunday mass
is celebrated at 4 pm. Corner of 5th Street
and A Avenue.
St Mark’s Anglican Church 601 5th
Street was built in 1895 and still has Sunday
services. There is a labyrinth hidden
from the street on the church grounds,
just the thing for a contemplative walk.
Join us for WaCanId bike ride!
The WaCanId is an annual bicycle tour taking cyclists on paved
roads encircling the Selkirk Mountains of Washington, Canada
and Idaho – hence the name WaCanId.
This 6-day event covers 370 miles/595 kilometers and showcases
the International Selkirk Loop’s spectacular scenery – majestic
mountains, beautiful lakes, rivers and the world’s longest free scenic
ferry. WaCanId also has the best SAG support of any ride – so if
you need a lift, no problem. There will be a few climbs to challenge
you, but it will be the scenery that will take your breath away.
So what are you waiting for… It is a terrific ride!
The purpose of life is to live it, to taste experience
to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear
for newer and richer experience.
(Eleanor Roosevelt, first chair of the
UN Commission on Human Rights)
Canadians love a road trip – that feeling of hitting the
open road is intoxicating. The open road can be literally
just you – maybe alone, maybe with your best friend –
driving in your car, singing loudly along with your favourite
playlist. Mile by mile you leave a bit more of your
conventional home-self behind. Perfect! Open heart,
open mind, now you are ready for new experiences, to
really explore new territory.
Over the next few pages you will be introduced to a
couple of Kaslo businesses, The Sentinel, and Between a
Lake and a High Place, who know all about travelling.
Their territory is both the internal – our human experience
– and the external – the local environment. Bringing
both together with infectious passion and curiosity,
their guides can lead you through a host of experiences
that will truly bring you away and towards, like the best
of road trips.
Experiences, much more than instruction, are a
seeing with the inner eye, finding a channel to our
essential inner life, a door to our deepest understanding
wherein we have the capacity for universal
response. (Lawren Harris, Canadian painter)
Mountaintop Music and Moonstories:
A magical moonrise evening of music and stories
atop Mount Buchanan.
What is Experiential Travel?
In its simplest form, it is an authentic activity that
connects a traveller to the essence of a place and
its people. It creates a pallette for travellers to
experience a culture by immersion, triggering
all the senses over a period of time…creating
learning opportunities and memories that will last
a lifetime.
Immerse yourself
in the sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and textures
and knowledge of the culture, place and people
you are visiting. It will take you off the regular
tourist path to the heartbeat of that culture. The
opportunities are endless when ideas and activities
are developed in experiential fashion. It can focus
around food, drink, music, nature, agriculture,
culture, adventure, or history, or combine
numerous elements together in creative fusions.
Why is this important?
More and more, travellers are not only looking
for immersive and experiential opportunities
when travelling, but demanding it. The age of
consumerism is past, and has been replaced by
the age of LIVING by doing. Travellers gather
memories and share them with others by
telling stories and sharing images about their
experiences.
“In many instances, it’s the local
people and their stories that our
guests connect with the most,
which is the best outcome we
could hope for.”
Dana and François Blouin
Gaining inspiration from the community and the
landscape surrounding them, Dana and François
Blouin have developed Experience Packages along
the themes of “People with stories”, “Our Nature”,
and “Eats and Drinks”, often in collaboration with
other community members and businesses. They
will continue to develop Experiences as the seasons
change and new opportunities arise.
Trails
Photo : Alexandra Halliday
Mountain Biking
Take ‘er easy and sing while you pedal,
or take it wild and
shriek like a mountain marmot!
Kaslo has it all: relaxing pedal-and-coast
country roads, or barely-in-control downslope
exhilaration. Combine the trails into
various loops and you’ll be entertained for
days. The most famous go-round is the
iDIDaRide 40 km, a stage favourite of many
ST6 riders from 2017. There is every kind
of terrain on that loop. The Kaslo Wagon
Road is beautiful and relaxing double-track;
it leads you west, through the Valley of the
Ghosts… heck, with just a little road riding
you can ride trail to New Denver – a great
two day adventure going there and back!
Kaslo River Trail This lovely riverside
stroll is bracketed by two beet-red covered
bridges. The Unity Bridge is at the lower
end of 5th Street. On the the northside trail,
halfway to the second bridge – the Trailblazer
Bridge – is the Family Pump Park. It’s really
fun for kids, novice and even expert mountain
bikers to swoop along through this network of
single track trails embraced within a curve of
the Kaslo River.
In early summer the Kaslo River is at its
wildest, and the damp forest floor is spangled
with the white-petalled queen’s cup. The
Trailblazer Bridge marks the far end of the
the bridge loop, but you can keep travelling
westward along the river. There are wooden
boardwalks, a couple of little bridges to cross
and some deeply shady spots where you can
stop and cool your toes in the icy water. The
trail eventually leaves the river, and climbs
steeply to the Kaslo airstrip and the True Blue
Recreation Area.
True Blue Trails
There is a lot of variety on the multi-purpose
trails above the airport in the True
Blue Recreation Area, with about 9 trails of
varying difficulty. Spanish Moss (trail 9) is
one of our favourites to walk or mountain
bike! If you take Straightface trail it will
connect you to I’ll Call Rusty, a trail which
heads west, then does a big loop to return
you to the south side of the River Trail.
Little wooden bridges and boardwalks carry
you over ephemeral streams, brooks and
boggy areas.
To get to the True Blue Recreation Area,
take Hwy 31 heading south out of Kaslo,
turn right on Balfour Avenue (before the
Esso), follow Balfour Avenue up the hill
until you reach the gravel pit and the signage
on the left before the airport.
Pick up a trail map at a local business
or go online to www.trailforks.com
See trail maps
in the centre pullout
Wardner Street Lookout or the Viewpoint
is a narrow switchback that leads to
a ridge overlooking Kaslo and Kootenay
Lake. The gain in elevation is about 100
metres. If you’re really fit and want a challenge,
you can make it up to the viewpoint
in 15 to 18 minutes. Or if not so much, give
yourself an hour for both up and down.
East/West Access Trail & No Brakes
These are challenging trails for mountain
bikers. Because they are on a southeast
facing slope, they are the first trails to
become free of snow in the spring. To get to
the trailhead, head up, up, up the highway
north out of Kaslo and you’ll see it on your
left, by the brake check stop for trucks.
The Monster and Mr. Skinny are
two black diamond single-track trails in
the Buchanan Recreation Area just west of
Kaslo. The Monster starts at the Buchanan
fire lookout tower. If you’ve made it from
the lookout all the way down to the Wagon
Road, you’ve made it to Mr. Skinny. Both
trails are gnarly, with wooden bridges and
other structures, rolling stones and steep
rooty sections. A generation of Kaslo parents
have been alarmed to learn, after the
fact, just what their kids were riding on. But
the kids are alright.
Whitewater Canyon Trail This hike
takes you through alpine bowls and offers
fascinating remnants of the valley’s mining
past. It’s also pretty easy walking. Start with
the Whitewater Forest Service Road. It begins
from Hwy 31A just after the old Retallack
bunkhouses (which are now someone’s home)
and before the big sign for Retallack Lodge.
Walk as far as you like and then return. Most
people opt for a 3 to 5 hour excursion.
Kokanee Glacier Park You can get to
this scenic but rugged alpine park from
Woodbury. After you’ve parked your high
clearance vehicle, you will gain almost
1,000 metres as you hike and scramble the
4-6 hour hike to either of two cabins. You
can reserve the cabins through www.alpineclubofcanada.ca
Another way to access the high alpine in this
provincial park is via Kokanee Glacier Park
Rd. (AKA Gibson Lake Forest Service Road)
which intersects Hwy 3A just after Kokanee
Marina. Kokanee Zipline is up that road,
and so too is the Old Growth Trail. The
trailhead to Kokanee Lake is about 16 km
up. From the trailhead it’s a 5 minute walk to
beautiful Gibson Lake or a 4 or 5 km hike to
Kokanee Lake and Kokanee Glacier Lodge.
A little further along is Kaslo Lake. You can
preregister for a campsite there through the
BC Backcountry registration website www.
env.gov.bc.ca/bcparks/registration/
Galena Trail trailhead is located at the
turnoff from Hwy 31A to Sandon. This easy
single track bike or hiking trail follows the
old rail bed approx 11 km to New Denver and
features mining ruins and a cable car over
Carpenter Creek! Approx 40 minute drive
west from Kaslo. Season: June – October
Idaho Peak This is a beautiful place to
view alpine flowers during July and August.
The gravel, switchback road begins in Sandon
and climbs 12 km past sights of lakes,
valleys and old mine sites. Idaho Peak is at
7,479 feet and the alpine meadow lies at the
12 km mark.
Davis Creek Hike The trailhead is across
Hwy 31 from Davis Creek Provincial Park,
30 km north of Kaslo. This 5.2 km round
trip is rated moderate and should take 2.5
to 4 hours. The trail is steep but the efforts
are worth it once you glimpse the view of
Kootenay Lake and the Purcell Mountains.
Monica Meadows - Photo: Gary Schneider
Monica Meadows Trail This trail
provides access to an alpine plateau with
spectacular views of the surrounding peaks.
The sensitive alpine plateau is intended
for day-use only. The area provides good
hiking, camping, excellent viewing, and
nature study opportunities. The easy trail
is 8 km round trip with an average hiking
time of 5 hours. Access is via Glacier Creek
Forest Services Rd. (map pg. 28) See www.
sitesandtrailsbc.ca for more details.
Mount Loki Accessible on the east shore
of Kootenay Lake, Mount Loki offers a great
10 km return day hike with spectacular panoramic
views from the summit. The hike is not
for the faint of heart and requires some exposed
scrambling near the top. The trailhead
is a 15 km drive on a gravel road north of Riondel
up Portman Creek Road. Bring lots of
food and water and dress appropriately. Hiking
poles really help, especially for the descent.
Kaslo’s Nordic Centre
On the flanks of Mt Buchanan, just a few
kilometres west of Kaslo towards New
Denver, is a the four-season wilderness
recreation area locally known as “Bucky.”
Many trails and logging roads, plus the K&S
Wagon Road, crisscross the area.
The Kaslo Outdoor Recreation Society
grooms over ten kilometres of trail throughout
Bucky for classic skiing. Since the
elevation of the trails ranges from 3,000 to
5,000 feet, the snow is reliably good through
March in most years.
There’s a cozy warm-up cabin in
the upper reaches, and at the lower
range, a shed with benches and a
tiny woodstove.
Snowmobiling
Kaslo makes a great base camp for
some challenging deep powder
excursions up to the sunny high
reaches of the Selkirk Range. 15
minutes west of Kaslo off Hwy
31A, you can park at the foot of the
Buchanan Lookout road to access
the Nelson Sno-Goers’ Empire Cabin
and some epic sledding terrain.
Or drive to the Bjerkness logging
road, which branches off from
Kaslo West Road just before Kaslo’s
small airstrip. Then just go UP.
Curling
The Kaslo Curling Club has a men’s,
women’s and mixed league, as well as
junior programs and a drop-in night.
Newcomers to the sport are welcome!
Drop by Friday evenings during
the season, whether you want to
curl or not. The social room has two
Wii bowling lanes, foosball, ping pong, darts,
music and friends – it’s a whole lotta fun.
Real Winter
Kaslo Powder Playground
The Powder Highway is a big loop that
circles the East and West Kootenay. Red
Mountain and Whitewater are two West
Kootenay ski hills on this route, but the big
resorts are just the tip of the mountaintop
when it comes to skiing opportunities in the
west. Within the powder loop are numerous
small operators, several near Kaslo, who
offer boutique-style custom snow experiences
for intermediate and expert skiers. They
offer world class pow – often deeper then a
two storey house!
Heli/Cat/Backcountry Skiing
Commercial heli and snowcat skiing operations
were born here!
Selkirk Snowcat Skiing, just north of Kaslo,
first pioneered bringing skiers to the backcountry
via sno-cat in 1975 and is still providing
amazing winter getaway holidays 40
years later. Also, north of Kaslo in Meadow
Creek is White Grizzly Cat Skiing – offering
exhilarating snowcat adventures. Just west of
Kaslo is Retallack, also a cat-skiing operation,
located in the Valley of the Ghosts. Stellar
Heliskiing flies from Kaslo and has tenure
on many of the world class mountains that
surround us. Treat yourself to Mt Carlyle’s
endless private powder stashes, set among
Real Fun!
Stellar Heliskiing - If Jason Rempel suggests it’s a few
degrees colder in the Purcells, hard against the east side of
Kootenay Lake, than it is in the Selkirks, backstopping the
lake’s western shore, you believe him.
Born in historic Kaslo midway along the 100 km lake an
hour north of Nelson, and raised in Meadow Creek, the tiny
rural community capping its north end, he’s lived his entire
life sandwiched by these two storied ranges. Consequently, he
knows where and when to find good snow.
In high school Rempel wrangled a dishwashing job at
Meadow Creek’s Selkirk Wilderness Skiing – world’s first
cat-ski operation when it opened in 1975. Ski guiding became
his focus, achieved by the tender age of 21. Immersed
daily in western Canadian can-do spirit and the wild cowboy
atmosphere of dreaming big and skiing bigger, Rempel
worked his way up to operations manager. By the time he
left in 2014 to focus on Stellar Heliskiing, the business he’d
founded in 2005 with apartner Kerry Luckey, he’d spent 23
years guiding thousands of people from around the globe.
With 80,000 skiable acres and six zones spread over two
ranges to play around in, Stellar offers a unique backcountry
experience with options aplenty. The 18+ metres of snowfall
each year is some of the deepest and driest in the world.
With terrain rising to over 3,000 metres, you can ski wideopen
bowls, high-alpine peaks, and magnificent old growth
forests. The Purcell side alone delivers jaw-dropping high
alpine runs like Merino Man, Slick Willy’s, Ghengis, and a
massive, glacier-hewn apron named Big Boy that itself holds
a day’s worth of lines.
Though future plans include a dedicated lodge and maybe
cat-skiing, for the time being Stellar continues day trips
and multi-day packages based out of the movie-set-worthy
Kaslo Hotel, an historic structure refurbished to four-star
level. www.stellarheliskiing.com
The North End
North End of Kootenay Lake
Forty km (25 miles) north of Kaslo is the
beautiful Lardeau Valley which embraces
the communities of Lardeau, Cooper Creek,
Meadow Creek, Howser, Argenta and Johnsons
Landing. The rich valley farmland is
the result of the ebb and flow over thousands
of years by the Duncan and Lardeau Rivers
through the flats at the head of the lake.
The area was first settled at the turn of the
last century when a flood of prospectors invaded
the area. In 1912, the first of several
homesteading families arrived to eke out a
living by farming and logging on the bench
land. Starting in the 1950s the area saw an
increase of people who were looking for a
way to build a principled and sustainable
community or just to get back to nature.
The north end of the lake includes five biogeoclimatic
zones, from low-lying wet valleys
with towering cedar and cottonwoods
to the scree on the peaks dribbling down
into spectacular alpine meadows. Wildlife
includes deer, moose, elk, black and grizzly
bears, mountain caribou, wolverine, wolves
and mountain goats. The streams contain
cutthroat and rainbow trout, Dolly Varden
(bull trout) and mountain whitefish.
Lardeau Valley Museum
A little north of the Meadow Creek town
centre, just past the Lardeau Valley Community
Hall, is a small museum. It is filled
with homey items that were treasured or else
were used daily in years past. Also on display
is a complete set of early 20th century
dentistry equipment. The foot/treadle-powered
dentist drill will give you the chills.
Open during July and August or by appointment,
email museum.lvhs@gmail.com. If
the museum is not open it’s worth stopping
anyway. There is still lots to see as you roam
about the grounds. The history lessons become
hands-on at the Lardeau Valley Harvest
Festival every year as some of the old
equipment is still functional.
Meadow Creek Spawning Channel
From late August to early October, the flashing
bright red of thousands upon thousands
of spawning kokanee is a sight to behold.
The Meadow Creek spawning channel was
constructed in 1967 with BC Hydro funds and
was the world’s largest at the time. The channel
supports a total of 250,000 spawning kokanee.
Ten to fifteen million fry are produced annually
with mean egg-to-fry survival rate of 45%.
The spawning channel is open to the public
unless there is unusually high bear activity.
There are walkways and an interpretive site
for visitors. It is located 4 km north of Meadow
Creek off Hwy 31.
Duncan Dam
Kootenay Lake was dammed in 1967. The
Duncan Dam, a 40 metre earthfill dam with
no power generation facilities, was the first
of the three Columbia River Treaty dams to
be built in the Canadian section of the Columbia
River Basin. It controls the flow of the
Duncan River, the tributary that provides
about 13% of the water flowing into Kootenay
Lake.
Fry Creek
As the dam neared completion, the valley
bottom was cleared of large trees, the original
residents of the community of Howser
displaced, and some farms and orchards
were flooded. When the water began to
rise and fill the new reservoir, the original
Duncan Lake increased in size from 25 km
to 45 km in length.
You can visit the dam. Follow the signs
on Hwy 31 north of Meadow Creek to
Duncan Dam – or do the armchair version!
Gerrard Rainbow Trout
Would you like to see the largest species of
rainbow trout in the world? If so, take a day
off and head up the lake!
Gerrard was once a settlement on the Lardeau
River although it’s only a few cabins
and a bridge today. For local folks, a trip
upriver to picnic and view the spawning
Gerrard is a popular Mother’s Day tradition.
From the viewing platform, the huge fish
can easily be mistaken for logs in the river.
Then you see that they are moving, slowly,
upstream. Not logs!
Due to overfishing, the Lardeau River has
been closed to fishing rainbows since the
1940s. But this closure has worked in favour
of the fish. Back in the 1950s the Gerrard run
was down to less than 150 fish. Today, thanks
to fishing regulations and the addition of
nutrients to the north arm of Kootenay Lake
by the Fish & Wildlife Compensation Program
and the Ministry of Environment, the
Gerrard run is over 1,000 fish in a year.
To reach the viewing platform from Meadow
Creek, stay on Hwy 31 (well-maintained
gravel road) until you cross the bridge over
the Lardeau River near the outlet of Trout
Lake (approx 45 minutes from Meadow
Creek). The viewing platform and parking
area is to the right of the road after the
bridge.
Retallack and Sandon
Sandon was a booming city in the late 1800s
and is an old mining town which is now a
ghost city turned historic site, wedged in a
steep valley less than an hour’s drive west of
Kaslo. It’s a popular destination for visitors,
including those on two wheels. A lot of
mountain biking and hiking trails radiate
from the townsite, making use of old railway
beds and packhorse trails. A few people still
live in Sandon, and it features a museum,
and restaurant, The Prospector’s Pick (a café
and general store combination), the national
award winning Silversmith Generating
Station (oldest continuously running operation
of its kind in Canada) and the 1900
City Hall, a survivor of the boom years.
This wild west boomtown was once home to
5,000 citizens, 2,300 miners and over 1,000
hotel rooms. In 1896 it became the first place
in BC to have a utility where every citizen
could obtain electrical service. Silversmith
Power & Light, BC’s smallest regulated utility
still provides 100% green, modern AC electricity
to the region today. Free tours are offered
daily from mid-May until mid-October.
A 130 ton steam locomotive and a smaller
mine locomotive are on display outdoors.
The larger engine, “iron horse”, pulled freight
and passengers around near impossible bluffs
and through snow-choked mountain passes.
The smaller locomotive was used to haul rail
cars in and out of the mine tunnels.
Idaho Peak, a famous alpine site and once
an active forestry lookout, is accessible from
mid-July until late September via a 12 km
narrow, steep mountain road from Sandon.
The views are unforgettable. A private shuttle
van from Sandon is a great way to enjoy
this treasure without damaging your car.
If you were to fly like an eagle over Kaslo, what
would impress you the most is the seemingly
impenetrable forest that surrounds this little
community on three sides. It’s no wonder
that the lake was the main route for the explorers,
prospectors and settlers who first
came here in the late 1800s.
For the original inhabitants of this area,
the Ktunaxa Nation, Kootenay Lake and its
tributaries defined their culture and economy.
The Ktunaxas’ contribution to marine
transportation was the unique design of their
canoes. Both the bow and stern of these craft
terminate in a point that resembles the nose
of a sturgeon.
In May of 1892, the population of Kaslo was
about 600, mostly men, and mainly miners
and prospectors living in tents or hastily built
cabins. Then the first families arrived onboard
steam powered sternwheelers, loaded
to capacity with people and supplies.
Why did they make this perilous journey?
Word had gotten out. In August 1891, Andrew
Jardine showed up in Ainsworth, just
south of Kaslo, with a quantity of high-grade
silver-lead ore. The population of Ainsworth,
south of Kaslo
on Kootenay Lake,
was the first boom
town. Kaslo would
be next.
Black Diamond mine crew,
Ainsworth, circa 1890s.
Bygone Days
In less than a year, nine miles of the Kaslo-
Slocan trail had been pushed through from
Kaslo to the rich ore deposits that lay between
Kaslo and Sandon, hacked through the dense
forests in the rugged Kaslo River Valley.
The Whitewater Mine, near present day Retallack,
became the second largest silver/lead/
zinc mine in the British Empire and was “lit
up like Coney Island.” The town boasted
several hotels, numerous brothels and casinos,
and its own school. Mines continued
to operate until the 1950s, after which Retallack
became a virtual ghost town. You
can still see the faded bunkhouses where
the miners slept and ate (these are now occupied
privately.)
In the early 1890s, effort was made to have
the Government build a wagon road from
Nakusp to the head of Slocan Lake to move
supplies in and the ore out, but the Government
refused. The residents of Kaslo then
induced the Slocan miners to transfer their
pack animals from the Nakusp trail to the
Kaslo Wagon Road.
Soon the narrow gauge Kaslo & Slocan
Railway was being pushed through terrain
which is some of the most savagely hostile
to railroading on the planet. A track
of 45-pound rail was pounded up 3.25%
grades to the 3,500 foot level at Zincton. On
a fragile looking “cliff hanger” trestle, chief
construction engineer W.F. Tye inched the
line across Payne’s Bluff, hundreds of feet
above the valley floor. Only 29 miles from
Kaslo, the K&S reached Sandon on October
22nd, 1895.
In 1910 a wildfire destroyed much of the
rail from Rossiter Creek to Sandon. In 1912
the crippled K&S line was bought by the
Canadian Pacific Railway and rebuilt to
standard gauge. The reconstructed line remained
busy until the Great Depression. By
1950 only one mixed freight train was running
each week between Kaslo, Sandon and
Nakusp.
In the early years the Kaslo Transportation
Co. had stages running daily to Retallack
The Shovel Brigade
- The Kaslo Claim, Feb 22, 1896
When the engines slip, and go slower and slower,
And the wheels fly ‘round to the futile roar
And steam won’t pull us a single inch more,
and gives four helpless toots.
Then the indispensible human bear,
Wooly, unshaven, unshorn of hair,
Crawls once more from his steaming lair,
Grabs up his shovel, and scoots.
Forty or fifty, all in a row,
Wallowing down the line they go,
Up to their ears in the mealy snow
(seven feet deep or about.)
And the engine stutters, Back! Back! Back!
And they fall on the slide in a grand attack
And shovel and pick and flange out the track,
And dig us poor passengers out.
Oh! Their Mackinaw garments are wooly and wet,
Their gunny-sack leggings are smelly and yet
We admire them, not for their beauty, you bet!
For there’s nothing pretty about ‘em.
But oh! give ‘em coffee, hot and strong
Sandwiches, meaty, and wide and long,
Give ‘em laurel wreaths, and a grateful song,
For we’d all be dead without ‘em.
Lyrics: Anonymous
and beyond. Horses, wagons, stage coaches,
and pack trains dug ruts as wranglers pushed
and pulled their loads over the new road. By
1923, the road was handling gasoline-powered
vehicles.
The Wagon Road was made obsolete in the
1960s when Hwy 31A was constructed, a
highway that stayed close to Kaslo River
for most of its length, following the route
of the old K&S railway. In 1993 the community
of Kaslo and the Rails to Trails Society
began the restoration of the Wagon
Road as a multipurpose recreation trail,
complete with interpretive signs illustrating
the history of the area.
Travel south from Kaslo would still be by
barge or sternwheeler until finally, in 1926
a road was blasted through to Balfour.
Then it was possible to drive past the Coffee
Creek bluffs all the way to Nelson.
During the war years (1939-1945) many
Kaslo men worked in timber operations.
The cottonwoods which grew to a massive
size in the low-lying areas at the north end
of the lake became the plywood sheeting
for the barracks of Canada’s armed forces.
The road north from Kaslo to the Lardeau
Valley opened up in 1955 but it was pretty
rugged. To get to the high school in Kaslo,
Meadow Creek teenagers had to get up at
5:30 in the morning. They were billeted in
Kaslo from Monday to Friday, sometimes
not returning home for weeks at a time.
Certainly, terrain has been a major factor
in the formation of the character of all who
have ever lived in and near Kaslo. It still is
to this day!
Woodbury
Whatever the season, there are plenty of
good reasons to make the 10 minute drive
from Kaslo to Woodbury. Woodbury is
home to a thriving resort and marina and
the well known Jones Boys Boats, who offer
boat and ATV sales and service.
The resort, open year round, is a natural
playground right on the shore of Kootenay
Lake. Woodbury Resort has everything:
boat rentals, camping, a restaurant and pub,
a convenience store with fishing tackle, chalet
rentals, a recreation hall and an outdoor
swimming pool. Twice a year, Terry Jones
and his staff host popular fishing derbies.
Many a fish story has become a Kootenay
legend over a pint or two in the pub.
Woodbury is also a gateway to Kokanee
Glacier Park and the Silver Spray Cabin. In
summer, you can access the park by driving
up Woodbury Creek Forestry Road for
13 km to the trailhead. In the winter, it’s a
“The best days are spent fishing!”
Kootenay Lake has some of the best fishing
in Canada. You can fish by boat, kayak or
canoe with bucktail streamers on the surface
or plugs down deep. Or cast from shore with
spoons and jigs. There are three different
types of rainbows in Kootenay Lake: Mykiss,
Kamlooper and the world renowned Gerrard
rainbow with sizes ranging from 1 to
AINSWORTH MOTEL
…on Kootenay Lake
20 lbs! Not to be outdone is the bull trout or
what the locals call dollies. They are great to
eat or smoke up for later and range from 1
to 15 lbs.
For up to date fishing reports, licensing and
gear, stop in at Barren’s Sport Shop on 4th
Street. A little south of Kaslo, Woodbury Resort
can also help you get set up, from a boat
to tackle to advice. Jones Boys Boats also
rent boats, and you
can rent canoes or
Kayaks at the Adventure
Centre in Kaslo.
The Kutenai...
“The sturgeon-nose canoe has been
with the Ktunaxa Nation since time
immemorial. Before the white man, with
their automobiles, these canoes were our
vehicles. The design is distinctive to the
Ktunaxa. The purpose of the design was
for the nose to part and glide through
the bulrushes in the valley’s delta. Its
unique nose shape was derived from
the sturgeon fish, commonly found
in the Kutenai lake and river.” These
canoes are still being made in the
traditional manner. Find out more at
Ainsworth Hot Springs
Check in at the comfortable Ainsworth Motel,
the Ainsworth Hot Springs Resort or at
one of the B&B’s or guest houses nearby.
Come to immerse yourself in the naturally
warm, healing waters and to allow the power
of nature to soothe your body and soul.
Since time immemorial, the Ktunaxa people
(pronounced K-too-nah-ha) have valued the
springs as a place for healing. After battle,
warriors would come to soak in the spirit
waters (nupika wu’u), easing their heart and
limbs back from injury and strain through to
strength once again.
J.B. Fletcher Museum
This was Ainsworth’s general store from
1891 until 1972. With all its original fixtures,
it looks much as it did when J.B. (Pop)
Fletcher first came to Ainsworth in 1912 to
manage it for owner Henry Giegerich. An ancient
cash register, medicine bottles, canned
goods, and old cereal ads, among other things,
make it feel like you’ve stepped back in time.
JB Fletcher Museum has developed a walking
tour map of historic sites in Ainsworth. Pick up
your copy at the store, which is open during the
summer months. Admission by donation.
The source of the springs lies in the mountains
above the resort, in the Cody Caves
area. The water works its way down through
porous calcareous rock to flow through to
the pools below, renewing the water naturally
approximately six times a day.
Ainsworth Hot Springs Resort
Today, the site of the ancient hot springs is
home to the Ainsworth Hot Springs Resort.
In a pleasing circularity, the resort is now
owned and operated by the Lower Kootenay
First Nations Band. They are proud to bring
their unique warmth to the hospitality you
will experience when you stay at the resort.
Staying at the hotel means you have exclusive
use of the healing waters in the mornings
before 10 am. Float in the steaming
open-air pool, then wade into the horseshoe-shaped
cave, where the darkness, the
mineral deposits and the humidity all combine
to offer an exhilarating experience.
The Ktunaxa Grill, the resort’s restaurant,
overlooks the pools and a wide expanse of
Kootenay Lake. The restaurant regulars give
rave reviews about the new menu which
features First Nations inspired cuisine. The
salads are gorgeous and the mussels with
accompanying bannock is a delicious and
memorable dish.
I had some activity last
summer when running
the store, such as a flying
umbrella, a ladies hat
flying off the shelf and
mysterious footsteps and
electrical activity.
Our belief is that this ghost
moved in when the Silver
Ledge Hotel burnt down.
LAND AREA:
Kaslo occupies 3.9
square kilometres or
almost – but not quite
– one square mile on
the face of the earth.
Summer
LOWER KASLO VILLAGE
occupies the alluvial
fan or delta of the Kaslo
River, which empties into
Kootenay Lake. If you are
standing at the river mouth
and looking across the lake,
you will be looking at the
Purcell Mountain Range.
MOUNTAINS:
The most dramatic peak, snowtopped
for all but a few weeks
every year, is the mountain
named after the Norse god
Loki. The peak of Mt Loki at
2,771 metres (9,091 ft) is the
last one to glow with the rays of
the dying sun.
On the western shores of
Kootenay Lake, (Kaslo’s side),
rise the mountains of the Selkirk
mountain range. The Kaslo River
valley cuts through the Selkirks
between Kaslo and New Denver,
and is riddled with the remains
of mines and settlements of the
silver rush era.
