The bonding between a brother and a sister is simply unique and is beyond
description in words. The relationship between siblings is extraordinary and is
given importance in every part of the world. However, when it comes to India, the
relationship becomes all the more important as there is a festival called "Raksha
Bandhan" dedicated for the sibling love.
This is a special Hindu festival which is
celebrated in India and countries like Nepal
to symbolize the love between a brother and
a sister. The occasion of Raksha Bandhan is
celebrated on the full moon day of the Hindu
luni-solar calendar in the month of Shravana
which typically falls in the August month of
Gregorian calendar.

Meaning of Raksha Bandhan
The festival is made up of two words,
namely "Raksha" and "Bandhan." As
per the Sanskrit terminology, the
occasion means "the tie or knot of
protection" where "Raksha" stands for
the protection and "Bandhan" signifies
the verb to tie. Together, the festival
symbolizes the eternal love of brothersister
relationship which does not
mean just the blood relationships only.
It is also celebrated among cousins,
sister and sister-in-law (Bhabhi),
fraternal aunt (Bua) and nephew
(Bhatija) and other such relations.

Why Is Hariyali Teej Celebrated?
The monsoon festival of Hariyali Teej celebrates the union of Lord Shiva and
Goddess Parvati. It commemorates the day when Lord Shiva accepted Goddess
Parvati's love for him.
In Hindu mythology, Goddess Parvati took 108 re-births until Lord Shiva finally
accepted her dedication and married her. It is this determination of the Goddess
that Teej celebrates.
Teej also assumes significance in that many believe that it was on this day that
Goddess Durga declared that fasting and performing certain rituals will bless
women with a happy married life.
Teej is mostly celebrated by married Hindu women in Northern and Western parts
of India to pray for the well-being of their husbands. Women dress up in traditional
attires, with the colour green being the popular theme - as the name Hariyali Teej
would suggest. The green represents the monsoon season which is supposed to
bring greenery all around.

Raksha Bandhan is mainly celebrated in India, this
important festival also holds great important for all religions
including Hindus, Sikhs, and Jains in other parts of the
world. Also known as Rakhi or Rakhi Poornima, as it falls
on the day of the full moon. This year, Raksha bandhan
falls on Thursday, 15 August 2019.

IMPORTANCE OF RAKHI:
The significance of Raksha Bandhan festival is huge in our country.
It is celebrated no lesser than any other festival, as it is dedicated to
the love of a sister and her brother. It holds immense importance in
Hinduism. The name of the festival, Raksha Bandhan is made up of
two words, Raksha (Protection) and Bandhan (Relation). On this day,
a sister ties ‘Rakhi’ around her brother’s wrist while the brother
undertakes an oath to protect his sister until death.

IMPORTANCE OF TEEJ
Teej is an important festival which is celebrated all over India. This
festival is celebrated with lot of zeal and excitement in Northern
India. The beginning of monsoon and Shravan month also mark the
beginning of Teej festival. Teej festival is celebrated on Tritiya of
Shukla Paksha during the Shravan month. This is also known as
Hariyali Teej or Shravani Teej. This festival is mostly associated with
women.
