away at 67 

Senior BJP leader and former foreign 

minister Sushma Swaraj passed away 

a while ago at AIIMS on Tuesday. The 

BJP veteran, who suffered a massive 

heart attack, died at the age of 67. Her 

last Twitter post was about thanking 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi about 

the government’s move on Kashmir 

stating that she was waiting for this 

day in her lifetime. 

Swaraj, who was for the Bharatiya 

Janata Party’s most prominent woman 

face, did not contest the recently held 

Lok Sabha elections in which the party 

won with a massive majority. Last 

November, she had announced she 

would not contest the general elections.

Goa amends law, now 

even OCI's, Tourists 

can register their 

marriage in the state! 

Panaji: The BJP-led Goa government 

would amend the Portuguese-era 

Uniform Civil Code (UCC), introduced 

in the year 1870, so that non-Goans can 

register their marriages in the coastal 

state, the Legislative Assembly was 

told on Tuesday. 

The UCC was introduced by the 

erstwhile Portuguese rulers. It was 

retained even after the territory was 

merged with India in the year 1961. 

Registration of marriage of non-Goans 

is currently banned in Goa. 

"We would amend the Uniform Civil 

Code, after which non-Goans can be 

allowed to register their marriages in 

the coastal state, which is currently 

banned under this Portuguese-era law. 

"Many people want to register 

their marriages in Goa as the state is 

governed by the Uniform Civil Code. 

We will make a provision through 

amendment so that they will be allowed 

to do so," Chief Minister Pramod 

Sawant said while responding to a Zero 

Hour mention by BJP MLA Antonio 

Fernandes. 

Fernandes said several Goans 

holding the Overseas Citizens of India 

(OCI) card, who are on a short vacation 

in Goa, find it difficult to register 

their marriages due to the mandatory 

provision of maintaining the 15-day 

gap between two signatures before subregistrar--one 

for declaration of intent 

and the other for confirmation. 

Responding to this, Law Minister 

Nilesh Cabral said an amendment will 

be made to the UCC to do away with the 

mandatory gap period. 

"Currently, a couple that wants to 

register their marriage can approach 

court to get this 15-day period 

absolved," the minister said. Goa, 

a former Portuguese colony, was 

annexed into the Union of India in 1961. 

In 1987, Goa was made a separate state.

Heavy rains cause 

flooding in Goa 

villages, several 

evacuated 

Incessant rains continued to lash 

several parts of Goa on Tuesday, 

causing flooding in some low-lying 

areas and forcing several families to 

shift out of their water-logged homes. 

Ten people from North Goa district’s 

Pilgao village were rescued by the 

disaster management department on 

Monday night after they were stranded 

at their homes due to flooding in the 

area, a senior government official said. 

In addition, several families were 

evacuated from Bicholim taluka where 

many homes were inundated, he said. 

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on 

Tuesday morning visited some villages 

in North Goa that have been facing a 

flood-like situation. 

Heavy rains have been lashing the 

coastal state for last seven days. 

The Mandovi river in the state 

crossed the danger mark on Monday 

night, causing flooding in some villages 

of Sattari taluka in North Goa. 

Sonan village in Sattari was cut-off 

from other parts of the district for last 

12 hours, another official said. 

The India Meteorological Department 

(IMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy 

rainfall in both North Goa and South 

Goa districts and issued an ‘orange 

alert’, asking people to be prepared for 

any situation. 

The IMD has predicted strong winds 

with speed reaching 45 to 50 kms per 

hour and gusting up to 65 kmph along 

the Maharashtra-Goa coast. Fishermen 

have been advised not to venture into 

the sea due to the rough weather. 

Belagavi-Goa 

train to chug 

from August 16 

The South Western Railways has finally 

announced the train service between 

Belagavi and Vasco in Goa from August 

16. An inaugural ‘inspection’ train 

will chug from Vasco to Belagavi on 

August 10. The train will be flagged off 

by Minster of State for Railways Suresh 

Angadi and Union Minister of State 

for Defence Shripad Yesso Naik at the 

Vasco Da Gama railway station in Goa. 

The train will begin its regular 

journeys from August 16 from Belagavi. 

It will depart at 6.20 am from Belagavi 

and reach Vasco at 12.40 pm. Similarly, 

in the return journey, the train will 

depart from Vasco at 3.55 pm and arrive 

in Belagavi at 9.25 pm. 

A senior official from the SWR said 

the train will be run biweekly on a trial 

basis for a period of three months. 

A large-scale of commodities are 

transported to Goa from Belagavi on a daily 

basis. Besides tourists and businessmen, 

a large chunk of daily wage labourers 

visit Goa regularly,” the official said.

Rajya Sabha passes Jammu and Kashmir 

Reorganisation Bill; scraps Articles 370, 35A 

New Delhi: The Rajya Sabha on Monday 

passed the Jammu and Kashmir 

Reorganisation Bill that seeks to scrap 

Article 370 and Article 35A in Jammu 

and Kashmir, while also bifurcating the 

state into union territories of Jammu 

and Kashmir and Ladakh. 

The Bill was passed by the Upper 

House through a voice vote, with 125 

being in favour and 61 against it and 

there was also one abstention. 

With the passage of the Bill in the 

Rajya Sabha, it will now be discussed 

in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday. The Bill 

lays the ground for the stalemate in 

Kashmir to be resolved after 70 years, 

Beggars in Swedish 

town ordered to 

pay for licence to 

collect money 

Beggars living in a small town in 

Sweden now need to buy a permit if they 

want to collect money on the streets. 

The permit, which was introduced in 

the town of Eskilstuna last week, costs 

250 SEK (£21) per person, and is valid 

for up to three months. 

It applies to designated areas around 

the town, including the town centre, 

several shopping complexes and other 

busy areas. 

Prospective beggars are advised on 

the local government website that they 

can apply for a permit by either filling 

out an online form, or by visiting their 

local police station. 

Anyone found begging without a 

permit, the website adds, will be asked 

to leave the designated spot and could be 

convicted of violating the Ordinance Act. 

Such a violation carries a fine of up to 

4,000 SEK (£342). 

Speaking to local media, councillor 

Jimmy Jansson said he was trying 

to "make it difficult" for beggars 

to collect money on the streets by 

"bureaucratising" the act. He later said 

he hoped police would enforce the new 

regulations on the streets so much so that 

"a new permit is needed for each day". 

But local newspaper Eskilstuna- 

Kuriren reported that beggars had 

already devised a way to get around the 

rule - by selling berries on the streets 

instead.

much Article 370 has harmed J&K." 

On Monday, the Upper House also 

passed the Jammu and Kashmir 

Reservation (Second Amendment) Bill. 

It seeks to extend the 10 percent quota 

to economically weaker sections to the 

state which has special constitutional 

provisions. 

Addressing the members of Rajya 

Sabha, Amit Shah said, “Repealing 

Article 370 is the only way out to 

resolve the crisis and deadlock in 

Kashmir. It will take some time, but 

this is the only way." 

Shah also added that no legal scrutiny 

could nullify or dilute the efficacy of 

the Bill, adding that it was imperative 

for Article 370 to be abrogated in order 

to eradicate terrorism from the region. 

Amit Shah, earlier today, moved 

the Rajya Sabha, announcing the 

government has decided to repeal 

Article 370 of the Constitution which 

grants special status to J&K. Shah 

also said the government has decided 

to bifurcate the state into two Union 

territories – Jammu and Kashmir, which 

will have a legislature, and Ladakh, 

which will be without a legislature.

Philippines declares 

dengue epidemic as 

deaths surge 

The Philippines has declared a 

"national dengue epidemic" after at 

least 622 people lost their lives from the 

mosquito-borne disease this year. 

At least 146,000 cases were recorded 

from January to 20 July - a 98% 

increase on the same period last year - 

the health department said. 

The epidemic was declared so that 

officials can identify areas in need of 

emergency attention. 

The infection causes flu-like illness, 

but occasionally becomes more severe. 

The global incidence of dengue 

has grown dramatically in recent 

decades, according to the World Health 

Organization (WHO). 

The Philippines declared an initial 

"national dengue alert" in July. 

Dengue fever affects more than 400 

million people each year around the 

world, most of them in tropical or subtropical 

zones. Most cases of severe 

infection are detected in children. 

Symptoms can include a fever, pain 

behind the eyes and a red rash.

Google will use recycled materials 

in all its hardware devices by 2022 

Your next Google phone or smart speaker could be partially made 

from recycled materials such as plastic bottles. 

Google has published a blog post 

promising to include recycled 

materials in all its "Made By Google" 

hardware products by 2022. That 

includes devices like the Pixel phones, 

Pixelbook laptops, Google Home 

speakers, Nest accessories, and even 

phone cases. On top of all that, by 

2020, Google said 100 per cent of all 

shipments "going to or from customers 

will be carbon neutral". 

Pixel 4 will feature gesture controls 

and Face Unlock, reveals Google 

iPhones in 2021 will 

come with Face ID 

and Touch ID under 

the screen 

Popular Apple analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo 

made a bold prediction that iPhones 

in 2021 will have two biometric 

authentication methods. The company 

will keep the Face ID but also resurrect 

Touch ID in the form of an under the 

screen fingerprint reader. 

Yes, we are doing predictions for two 

years ahead now, but it all makes sense 

when you think about it. Apple hasn't 

always been the first one to implement 

a feature and instead has waited for 

the tech to mature so it can offer more 

polished user experience or put its own 

spin to it. 

In-display fingerprint technology 

has only recently started feeling 

comparable to conventional ones, so it's 

only logical for Apple to use it sometime 

in the future. Still if the report has it 

correct and we have to wait until 2021 it 

might be too long. 

Kuo outlines a couple of issues that 

Apple needs to resolve before making 

the step. Power consumption, size 

of the sensing area, thickness of the 

module and the production yield rate 

of the lamination process are some of 

the main obstacles that Apple needs to 

overcome. Analysts believe it can do it 

in the next 18 months or so. 

As part of this pledge, the company 

shared a new set of sustainability 

commitments. Google’s head of 

sustainability for hardware, Anna 

Meegan, also told Fast Company 

that Google has already begun using 

recycled plastic in Chromecast 

devices and in the fabric on Google 

Home speakers. It also claimed to 

reduced emissions by 40 per cent after 

switching from air shipments to cargo. 

"These commitments will build on the 

foundation and progress we’ve already 

made," Google explained. "From 2017 to 

2018, our carbon emissions for product 

shipments decreased by 40 per cent. 

We’ve also launched our Power Project, 

which will bring one million energyand 

money-saving Nest thermostats 

to families in need by 2023, and built 

much of our Nest product portfolio 

with post-consumer recycled plastic." 

Keep in mind Google's rivals have 

similar sustainability goals. Apple 

even made a robot that disassembles 

old devices for recyclable parts.

New Japanese Flying Car 

gets off the ground, for 

about a minute 

It was caged and only hovered for about 

a minute, but it flew: a new flying car. 

Made by NEC Corp., the vehicle is 

essentially a large drone with four 

propellers that’s capable of carrying 

people. The Japanese electronics maker 

demonstrated the machine, flying 

without a passenger, at a Tokyo suburb 

on Monday. Powered by a battery, it rose 

briefly to about 3 meters (10 ft.) above the 

ground before settling down again. 

Behind the somewhat underwhelming, 

drama-free demonstration lies a bigger 

ambition: Japan’s government wants 

the country to become a leader in flying 

cars after missing out on advancements 

in technology such as electric cars and 

ride-hailing services. The country’s 

technological roadmap calls for 

shipping goods by flying cars by around 

2023 and letting people ride in flying 

cars in cities by the 2030s. 

NEC engineers and Cartivator, 

which it sponsors, spent about a year 

developing the model. It’s about 3.9 

meters long, 3.7 meters wide and 1.3 

meters tall, and weighs about 150 

kilograms. It’s being tested in a large 

10-meter-by-20-meter cage that’s 2 

meters tall, to make sure it doesn’t fly 

out of control and injure someone, or 

cause damage.

trip be affected? 

The situation in Jammu & Kashmir is tense. 

But up in Leh & Ladakh, India's newest Union 

Territory, it's business as usual for the moment 

Article 370 has been scrapped, Jammu 

& Kashmir has been separated from 

Ladakh–and the two regions have 

become separate Union Territories. 

Anticipating trouble, the government 

of India moved tourists and pilgrims 

out, and rushed huge amount of troops 

into the state. The situation is volatile 

and no one really knows how things 

will play out. Srinagar, Gulmarg, 

Pahalgam and other parts of Kashmir 

Valley are out of bounds. But what 

about Leh & Ladakh? Should you 

cancel your plans? No, say the locals. 

Here’s a status check.

Over the last three decades, Leh 

& Ladakh, which has a Buddhist 

majority, has remained largely 

unaffected by the volatile situation in 

Jammu & Kashmir. Even today, life 

in Ladakh is normal, even as Kashmir 

Valley is tense. 

Are flights to Leh affected? 

- If you’re flying to Leh, all flights on 

Vistara, IndiGo, GoAir and Air India 

are on schedule at the moment. 

- If you’re flying to Jammu and 

Srinagar, IndiGo has waived the fee on 

all cancellations and rescheduling of 

tickets (charges on fare difference will be 

applicable if any) to Jammu till 9 August. 

- If you’re flying to Srinagar: After 

announcing a cap on fares at R9,500, 

Air India has further slashed its ticket 

prices to R6,715 from Srinagar to Delhi 

and at R6,899 from Srinagar to Delhi till 

15 August. 

Has local transport in Ladakh been 

affected? 

No, say all the four tour operators we 

spoke to. “As of right now, there are no 

restrictions, everything is totally safe. 

Leh airport is operational. However, 

[we] are not providing one with tours 

to Srinagar; instead, we are advising 

people to visit Manali instead,” Angrub 

Dorje, who runs Discover Ladakh, 

told CNT this morning. “Both Leh 

and Ladakh are completely safe. It is 

a normal day here, schools are open, 

the internet is working. Access to all 

tourist spots is open,” his colleague 

Sarfaraz Ahmed told us. 

How’s the situation in Ladakh?

Ladakh tells CNT that the situation 

in the region is very peaceful. “The 

local administration has placed no 

restrictions whatsoever. To be honest, 

the locals are completely unaffected by 

what’s happening in Kashmir. I know 

of what’s going on because I’m on social 

media. I’ve heard that they are stopping 

vehicles from entering Srinagar, but 

that’s the extent of the restrictions 

imposed in the region. I’ve even heard 

that BJP MLA in Ladakh Jamyang 

Tsering Namgyal is appealing to 

tourists in Kashmir to come to Ladakh.” 

The Ladakhi Women’s Travel Company 

too, says it’s business as usual in Ladakh. 

“We haven’t had any cancellations 

from travellers yet. We have not been 

informed of any restrictions on travel 

in and around the area by officials. Life 

continues as always here.”

the entire auto industry, but Royal 

Enfield is really feeling the burn. In 

the quarterly financial results released 

by Eicher today, it was revealed that 

Royal Enfield sales have dropped by 

a whole 19 percent in Q1 FY 2018-2019, 

compared with the same period last 

year. Royal Enfield is a huge part of the 

Eicher group, and this dip has certainly 

contributed to group’s 7 percent drop in 

overall revenue over the same period. 

While commenting on Royal Enfield’s 

quarterly performance, Vinod Dasari, 

the company’s newly appointed CEO, has 

been quoted as saying, “We will also be 

introducing new motorcycle variants in 

the coming months to widen our offering 

and provide greater accessibility to our 

discerning customers.” 

Sources lead us to believe that the 

upcoming variant that Dasari is referring 

to will become the most affordable 

motorcycle in the company’s present 

line-up. This bike will not use the newgen 

platform that has been spied on test 

on numerous occasions, but will instead 

be based on the existing Bullet platform. 

Royal Enfield’s most affordable models 

at the moment is the Bullet 350 that 

costs Rs 1.21 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). 

If you want your Bullet with the option 

of an electric start, you’ll have to shell 

out Rs 1.35 lakh for the Bullet 350 ES. 

This new variant will be based on the 

Bullet 350, both kick and electric start. 

It will be visually distinguished by a 

simpler fuel tank badge and a black 

treatment for the engine and other 

areas like the indicators, etc., replacing 

most of the chrome seen on the Bullet. 

It's expected that the mechanicals will 

remain untouched and that the bike 

will continue to be sold with spoked 

wheels and tubed tyres to help keep 

costs down. Royal Enfield may also 

make use of brighter colours on this 

new variant, something that has been 

well received on the Thunderbird X. 

The same treatment may also be given 

to the 500cc models. 

Just how low Royal Enfield wants to 

price this bike needs to be established, 

but we could be looking at something 

around the Rs 1.10 lakh to Rs 1.15 

lakh mark. If so, the entry level Bullet 

will enter the price ballpark of 200cc 

motorcycles like the Bajaj Pulsar NS200 

and the TVS Apache RTR 200 4V. Royal

models set ramp on fire in Delhi 

New Delhi (India), July 31 (ANI): We 

have often seen body-positive posts on 

social media and the national capital on 

Wednesday saw a live example of it with 

over a hundred plus-size models walking 

the ramp to prove their prowess. 

The beauties were vying to be a part 

of the upcoming Lakme Fashion Week. 

Taking place for the first time in 

Delhi, the audition for the plus-size 

models including both men and 

women, was a stepping stone for those 

aspiring at the grand event. 

The audition which took place at 

Taj Mansingh Delhi had a great panel 

seated in the jury's chair with bigwigs 

from both fashion and business 

industries. 

Breaking the stereotypes of the 

perfect size, 166 models aged between 

18-40 graced the ramp. 

Jacqualine Kiara Ledlie, one of the 

models who participated in the walk 

described the events as being "very 

positive" for others like her. 

"These auditions are very positive so 

it definitely gives a hip up to each girl 

out here and it gives you the motivation 

to come here and take part in all these 

auditions. So, these auditions should 

keep happening so that every girl is 

motivated," she added. 

While this was the first time ever that 

such an event took place in the national 

capital, Jacqualine wished that the 

reach should be expanded as it comes 

as a "booster" for the plus-size models. 

It is a no-brainer that when one hears 

the word 'model', they tend to imagine 

a sleek and lean girl but it wasn't the 

same case here. 

The models weren't judged on a predecided 

body measurement but as an 

estimate, had women with a waist more 

than 34 inches while men with more 

than 40 inches, said a jury member. 

"I am so happy because I have been 

working towards creating content for 

body positivity. And at one place, this 

much of body positivism is crazy and 

I am too happy," she Sakshi, a blogger 

and an attendee at the event. 

She continued, "There's not much 

inclusivity in the fashion industry per 

say, for certain sizes so I feel events 

like this should happen much more not 

just once a year." 

Sakshi added that at such events "you 

could just be you!"

Hardening his stand, Chief Minister

accept the "illogical demands" of the 

protesting operators. Speaking to 

reporters, Sawant claimed a major 

section of agitating taxi owners was 

ready to withdraw the strike but "some 

vested interests are misleading them". 

A number of tourist taxi unions 

have been on strike since 2 August 

demanding scrapping of GoaMiles. 

GoaMiles is an initiative of the state 

Tourism Development Corporation 

(GTDC) which is aimed at easing 

travelling woes of tourists and helping 

Goan taxi drivers earn more. The 

service operates through a mobile

Faced with a slump in the tourism 

industry, Goa wants to attract tourists 

from Australia and the United Arab 

Emirates as part of its geographical 

marketing strategy articulated in the 

state's Tourism Master Plan and Policy. 

According to a written reply tabled 

during the ongoing monsoon session of 

the State Assembly, Tourism Minister 

Manohar Ajgaonkar said that the state 

government was focusing on high 

domestic spending and international 

tourists. 

"Depending on identifying new 

opportunities, further diversify to 

markets such as Australia through 

a multi-product destination where 

cultural tourism would play a major 

differentiation role," Ajgaonkar said 

in his written reply quoting the draft 

tourism policy being prepared by the 

consultancy agency, KPMG. 

The reply also said that there was a 

need to tap into the markets for 'short 

breaks and holidays' with new direct 

flights from the Middle East. Currently 

tourists from Russia top the inbound 

tourist arrival charts, even as British 

tourists rank second. 

The assurance comes at a time 

when the state tourism industry 

is facing a trough. The Travel and 

Tourism Association of Goa, a lobby 

of stakeholders, had submitted a 

white paper about the decline in 

tourism to Ajgaonkar, urging the state 

government to take urgent steps to 

address the dip in arrivals. 

Goa to ban making, 

sale of plastic items 

PORVORIM: The state government 

has proposed drastic changes in the 

Goa Non-biodegradable Garbage Act, 

1996, to prohibit manufacture and sale 

of plastic items, like carrybags, cups 

and straws, and make it a punishable 

offence. 

Manufacture or sale of plastic bags 

will attract a penalty Rs 50,000 for the 

first offence, Rs 1 lakh for the second 

and Rs 3 lakh or imprisonment for 

three months, or both, for any 

subsequent offence. 

The amendment bill was approved by 

the cabinet on Monday. It will be tabled 

in the House in the ongoing monsoon 

session of the assembly.

Will you return a lost wallet with Rs 

6,000 in it to its right owner? Even if 

you do not intend to return a loaded 

wallet, most people would still do so 

especially when the wallet has more 

cash in it, reveals an interesting study. 

For the lost wallets with over Rs 6,000 

inside, an impressive 72 per cent of 

people tried to return them, revealed 

the study published in the journal 

Science that involved 13 research 

assistants “losing 17,000” wallets 

with various sums of money in 355 

cities across 40 countries. The social 

experiment took three years and over 

half a million dollars to complete. 

“People want to see themselves as an 

honest person, not as a thief. Keeping 

a found wallet means having to adapt 

one’s self-image, which comes with 

psychological costs,” Michel Maréchal, 

Professor at University of Zurich, was 

quoted as saying in reports.

Flipkart takes on 

Amazon, Netflix 

with free video 

streaming service 

BENGALURU: Walmart Inc.’s Flipkart 

plans to start a free Indian video 

streaming service in coming months, 

escalating a fight with Amazon.com Inc. 

by borrowing its arch-foe’s tactics. 

India’s biggest online retailer plans to 

roll out video streaming for members 

of its Flipkart Plus loyalty program by 

September ahead of the peak Diwali 

shopping season, people familiar with 

its plans said. The service is currently in 

beta mode, the people said, asking not to 

be identified discussing internal strategy. 

In a departure from Amazon Prime, 

Flipkart Plus video-streaming will come 

free just like its no-subscription fee 

loyalty program. Flipkart shoppers can 

become members by amassing 300 “super 

coins," at a rate of 2 for every Rs. 100 

spent on its platform. Users can exchange 

those tokens for items from flight 

tickets and food delivery to car rentals 

and music streaming subscriptions. 

Flipkart won’t initially produce 

originals -- a route that’s proven costly 

for online platforms including Netflix 

Inc. -- and instead license content from 

the likes of Walt Disney Co. and local 

studios such as Balaji Telefilms, the 

people said. In-house content could come 

later, they added. The news was reported 

earlier Monday by Money Control. 

The researchers examined four 

factors that influence the decision 

to return the wallet: The monetary 

incentive to keep the money, the effort 

involved in contacting the owner, 

altruistic considerations about the 

welfare of the owner, and what is 

known as the “psychological costs of 

dishonest behaviour”. 

The latter are caused by the fact that 

keeping a lost wallet is often perceived 

as theft, and the finder has to adapt 

their self-image. 

The researchers were able to show 

that these psychological costs, i.e. the 

preservation of one’s self-image as an 

honest person, can explain the finders’ 

behaviour. 

According to the study, in countries 

such as Switzerland, Norway, the 

Netherlands, Denmark and Sweden, 

between 70 and 85 per cent of the 

wallets were returned to their owners. 

The Swiss are the most honest 

when it comes to returning wallets 

containing a key but no money. 

Danes, Swedes and New Zealanders 

were even more honest when the 

wallets contained larger sums. 

In countries such as China, Peru, 

Kazakhstan and Kenya, on average, 

only between eight and 20 per cent of the 

wallets were returned to their owners. 

Although the proportion of returned 

wallets varied widely between 

countries, in almost all countries, 

wallets with large sums of money or 

valuable contents were more likely to 

be returned, said the researchers. 

“We mistakenly assume that our 

fellow human beings are selfish. In 

reality, their self-image as an honest 

person is more important to them than 

a short-term monetary gain,” said 

Alain Cohn, Assistant Professor at 

University of Michigan. 

Digital games better than 

mindfulness apps to ease stress 

A new U.K. study finds that digital 

games, typical of those used on 

smartphones, may outperform 

mindfulness apps when it comes to 

relieving work-related stress. 

Researchers from University College 

London (UCL) and the University of 

Bath ga ve a 15-minute math test to 45 

student participants, ages 19 to 36, to 

induce a sense of work strain. 

Next, the participants played either 

a shape-fitting game called “Block! 

Hexa Puzzle” or used the Headspace 

mindfulness app for 10 minutes. 

Participants in the control group were 

given a fidget-spinner toy. 

In a survey before and after using the 

game, app or toy, the volunteers rated 

on a four-point scale how tired and 

energetic they felt. 

According to the findings, published 

in the journal JMIR Mental Health, 

participants who played the shapefitting 

game reported feeling more 

energized and less tired afterwards, 

while those in the mindfulness and 

fidget-spinner groups reported the 

opposite: Their level of “energetic 

arousal” appeared to decline. 

In a second part of the study, a 

different group of 20 participants 

played either the shape-fitting game 

or used the Headspace mindfulness 

app after arriving home from work for 

five days straight. After finishing the 

activities, the participants completed 

an online survey. 

While no differences were found 

between the two groups in terms of 

how energized participants felt, the 

shape-fitting game appeared to offer 

increasing benefits throughout the 

week in terms of “recovery experience” 

— that is, to what degree participants 

felt relaxed, detached, in control and 

able to improve their skills. 

This was measured by asking 

participants to what extent they 

agreed with statements such as 

“During the activity, I forgot about 

work.” Surprisingly, participants who 

followed a beginners’ course on the 

Headspace mindfulness app scored 

progressively less well on this measure 

throughout the five days. 

“Far from feeling guilty about being 

absorbed by their phone, people who 

play such games after a stressful day at 

work should know they are likely to be 

gaining a real benefit,” said study coauthor 

Professor Anna Cox from UCL 

Interaction Centre. 

The authors noted that digital games 

appear to fulfill four criteria necessary 

for post-work recovery: they tend to be 

relaxing, they provide opportunities 

for mastering a new skill, they are 

highly immersive and distracting, and 

they allow people to feel in control. 

The researchers also noted that the 

level of enjoyment of the digital game 

was tied to the amount of benefit it 

offered in terms of post-work recovery. 

“To protect our long-term health 

and well-being, we need to be able to 

unwind and recuperate after work,” 

said lead author Dr. Emily Collins from 

the University of Bath, who started 

the research while at UCL. “Our study 

suggests playing digital games can be 

an effective way to do this.”

On August 10th, an asteroid, which is 

roughly 569 metres in diameter, will fly 

by the Earth. The asteroid, 2006 QQ23 

is as big as the Empire State Building 

and is considered a NEO (Near-Earth 

Object). The 2006 QQ23 will fly within 

0.049 astronomical units (1 AU = 

Distance between Earth and the Sun) at 

about 16,740 kmph. 

The object being within 0.5 AU of Earth 

and greater than 140 meters in diameter 

has been labeled as a potentially 

hazardous object. The asteroid though, 

is not considered as a threat and has 

been called more or less benign by

Asteroids and meteors are said to 

fly by the Earth and Moon all the time 

and are not considered a threat. The

to bright meteor showers. Meteorites 

are remnants of these fragments are 

found on Earth’s Surface. Most of these 

objects do not pose a threat but are 

constantly monitored to ensure they 

don’t turn into a threat.

New Delhi: The Indira Gandhi 

International Airport (IGIA) in the 

national capital has commenced its 

next phase of infrastructure expansion 

plan which will enable it to handle 100 

million passenger per annum (MPPA) 

in the next three years. 

The plan, unveiled by operator 

Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) 

in a statement on Monday, envisages an 

enhanced airside capacity to handle 

140 MPPA. 

The overall development plan under 

Phase 3A is expected to be completed by 

June 2022. 

"DIAL would carry out integration of the 

'Departure and Arrival' terminals of T1, 

construction of new T1 Apron, fourth 

runway, dual elevated Eastern Cross 

Taxiways (ECT), landside developments 

for circulation and connectivity 

improvements and T3 modification works. 

"After the expansion, Delhi Airport 

would become the first airport in India 

to have four runways and dual elevated 

Eastern Cross Taxiways (ECT)," a 

statement said. 

"In the last decade, the Air Traffic 

Movements (ATMs) and passenger 

numbers have seen a massive surge 

exceeding projections," it added.
