“My Name is Paul Bent aka Pablo, Big
Daddy or Mr. CanJam and I live in
the Nation Capital Ottawa, ON
Canada. Ottawa is a ‘Niche’ when
it comes to Reggae and Dancehall
in a city that is run on what I like to
call it POLITRICKS. I started
promoting events in Ottawa over
15 years ago because I love my
Culture and love to see people
from different Cultures enjoying
themselves to what we have to
offer being Roots Rock Reggae
and Dancehall. After providing
Security Services as Owner of
Secure-A-Choice Security to many
Artistes touring Ottawa.
From these services I created my
own promotional company
CanJam Muzik being from
Jamaica and now residing in
Canada it was a no brainer to
name CanJam Muzik. CanJam
Muzik has placed itself in a unique
position as a Promotional and a
Production company working with
mostly upcoming artistes from
Canada and Jamaica.
There being a few people asking
about CanJamFestival and
CanJam Muzik if we are affiliated,
because the Logo’s are identical. I
created the CanJam Muzik logo
from 2013 and DJ Bigga Boss in
2017 I do believe. After a few
people in the industry reached out
to me and Bigga Boss, we had a
few conversations and we came to
an agreement or understanding
that we both work together for the
better good. CanJam Muzik also
has a Yearly Boat Cruise on the
Civic long weekend on the Sunday
called “Big Daddy’s Annual Boat
TRIPLE THREAT
SINGING SENSATION VONNII
T
he up and coming, triple threat sensation has just released
a track named “Rdy Up” which dropped on June 28th;
produced by a young mastermind who goes by the name of
Arham and engineered by Vonnii herself. Arham and Vonnii’s
collaboration is of tropical, new age dancehall flavor with an R&B
flare to kick off the vibes for the summer.
Vonnii recently opened for The Messenjah, Luciano in Montreal.
She left the crowd in awe and wanting more. Vonnii is currently
working on an a track with the one and only dancehall queen
Macka Diamond on a ‘one drop’ riddim produced by Cornelius
Records. Vonnii’s mellow flow and mesmerizing harmonies,
along with Macka Diamond’s veteran expertise and melodic lyrics
put this track in a league of its own; a perfect combination of old
school and new school. This is her first feature with Macka
Diamond, but this is not her first time working with Macka. Vonnii
engineered, co-wrote and directed Macka’s first ever ‘one drop’
song called “Missing U”, which is soon to be released as well.
Ever since then, the two have formed an unbelievable bond with
music together.
Junior Reid was recently in Canada for Irie Music Fest and
recorded dubs at Vonnii’s studio, 3Mirage Studio. She ended up
doing a combination dubplate with him and he is enthusiastic
about working with her and producing for her on future projects.
“I Don’t Want U”, fully written, produced, and engineered by
Vonnii is also to be released this summer along with many more
hit tracks. Be on the lookout for her EP “Headgamez”, which is
set to drop at the end of this summer 2019. To follow Vonnii on
her journey and for more updates, follow her @officiallyvonnii on
JULION’S VIEWS
canadianreggaeworld.com
REGGAE IS ALWAYS
GOLD
B
lessings going out to Donna
Makeda and Prince Everald
for the honor that you have
provided me for over a decade,
writing for ReggaeXclusive
Magazine. I have covered so many
topics in that time, and repeated the
same lines in several submissions; I
do hate to be repetitive and boring.
Being predictable is definitely not
what reggae is or has meant to I and
others. So I put out some sounds to
the community at large and got some interesting responses. I asked,
“Writing an article for ReggaeXclusive Magazine; any topic or
suggestions?”
Here are a few responses...
Jonathan Shaw: What would the world look like without reggae music?
Joanne Shalpa: Lack of funding for reggae music
Peter Skinner aka Blessed: Young people’s interest or disinterest in
Reggae music. I’ve noticed recently most of the young people only want
to do Hip Hop or Dancehall. We all know the future of anything depends
on the youth. I think their interest or lack of it is motivated by money and
level of fame!
Will: The lack of representation coming from our city
Patterson: How and why Reggae has mass appeal beyond the Black
community
Xola Lololi: Establishment of a Reggae Music Association of Toronto, like
AU and EU we need to have some form of continued governance of the
Reggae Music community to handle issues that are hindering its
development. I personally live in times when Reggae Music was
respected and thrived in this City; the era of the worldwide recognition of
the Bob Marley & the Wailers; the genre need its government for
continued development. Bless Julian Anthony Christopher King - dem a
guh tired fi see yuh face but dem cyan get u out a di Race, raspect. They
are many who are credible community members who are in some way
associated with Reggae, most importantly the creators of the music;
musicians and all who are associated with the genre; music business,
DJs, promoters; let’s start the conversation, bless
Paul Corby: Reggae Is an International Music; breaking free of
Jamaicanism. Good or bad idea? I hear “elsewhere” bands trying to
create an ersatz Jamaican sound with dated references and/or dialect. It
seems inauthentic and a little silly. What is happening in Jamaican music
now doesn’t even reference those old tropes. Reminds me of the failed
music of certain “blues” bands, feeling me?
Pat Kelly: New youth conscious music; Koffee, Chronixx, etc
Neville Bassey: Neville Bassey is a good topic; you all need to know him
Deborah Barnes-Drummond: Resistance movement.
Marcell A Wilson: Feature the Canadian reggae artistes, like Leroy
Sibbles, The Uplifters (my dad’s group), George Banton and others. The
ones who paved the way here for the movement
Ammoye Evans: Still the lack of feminine presence on so many reggae
show line-up here in Canada; would love to hear your views on that
Kush Nubia: The cross influence of Afrobeats and Dancehall / Reggae
Anthony Goldstein (Fujahtive): How about on just how popular reggae
was in Toronto in the 80’s and 90’s. Every night someone was playing and
people were attending. I know. It’s hard to keep bringing up how good it
was and not sound like old farts
Christopher J. Duncanson-Hales: The state of Rastafari and Reggae. I
have an academic article on Rastafari, Mortimo Planno and Bob Marley
that I’ll share with you
Carol Brown: Where have all the good in house producers gone? The
Reggae industry here is lacking good producers
Annalee Orr: Why has the Irie Music Festival become mostly Soca and
Dancehall instead of Reggae? VERY disappointing! Caribana was taken
over as well
RZee Jackson: More money for artistes and musicians
Shekinah Ashanti Holt: Why no one wants to pay anyone else?
Celeste Adams: A photo of Peter Tosh came through my FB the other
day and it had Peter Tosh quote something like ‘if I wasn’t a musician, I
would be a bloodclaat revolutionary’; write about that. I love PT and I
would love to debate that
*There were a few more responses from artistes and promoters wishing I
n I to write about them and their journey to date. I tend to stay away from
those cause what I may write truthfully may not be the opinion that the
band, musician, artiste may want me to say. Also I write based on
inspiration as it pertains to music. A moment, a song, a vibe, a feel; I can’t
write what I can’t or don’t feel, especially when ones and ones want I to
write about them in the positive vein in which they see or perceive
themselves to be. The truth isn’t everyone’s friend.
Reggae morphs. From the era of ska where Jamaicans took the American
R&B and turned it into “life” in order to represent the vibe and feel of its
own people. Jamaican life; wi wah wi owna ting, wi nuh love run back a
nobody, fe wi owna music, our sound, our feel. There is ZERO fear of
anyone taking reggae away from Jamaicans, ZERO, It isn’t just reggae; it
isn’t JUST about reggae; It is a feel. One either feels it or one doesn’t.
Feel music always in stock, all day, and every day. Many above have
varied concerns for this genre. I am grateful to see that. The varied
concerns tell me that some still see and feel the loving frequency of
reggae music. Some call it warrior music. It is a truth music with deep
integrity that forces all to be accountable. Everyone; including me, I know.
Thanking all of I n I reggae friends for input and inspiration.
STRESS RELATED
WEIGHT GAIN
By: Trisha Smith R.H.N, C.H
Botany and Nutraceuticals
www.aderoherbals.com
W
eight gain and obesity are
very common in today’s
society. It’s easy to blame
this epidemic on food and lack of
exercise, but what if this wasn’t the
case? What if stress was the
underlying factor in your weight
gain? Understanding what your
triggers are and how your body
responds to stress, is key to
reversing obesity and underlying
conditions.
We must first identify triggers. A
trigger is anything in the outside
environment that knocks our
bodies out of balance. It could be
noise, polluted environments,
driving, a lack of joy, school, work,
lack of sleep, allergies, loneliness,
negative thinking or toxic
relationships. Whatever it is, it must
be identified and managed in a
healthy manner through things like
meditation, qi-gong, affirmations or
life changing decisions.
Stressful events trigger the adrenal
glands to secrete many hormones,
including Cortisol. This hormone is
responsible for maintaining blood
sugar levels in the body. When we
are experiencing Chronic Stress
(like most of us do), Cortisol levels
rise, which leaves too much insulin
in the blood. This eventually leads
to weight gain and a high risk of
developing Diabetes. Increased
Cortisol levels also activate fat cells
to store fat around your abdominal
area and triggers strong sugar
cravings and mood swings.
Neutralizing triggers while
rejuvenating and nourishing the
adrenal glands are first steps to
managing stress related weight
gain. Some things you can begin to
do are: (1) Going to bed before
10:30PM (2) Avoiding Caffeinated
beverages. Drink Herbal tea like
Chamomile instead (3) Do not eat
fruit on its own in the morning
without adequate protein. (4)
Include Essential Fatty Acids in
your diet like flaxseeds, fresh water
fish, avocado, raw nuts and
evening primrose oil. (5) Take
Lemon Balm, Holy Basil,
Peppermint and Lavender found in
my Luscious Locs tea for Stress
and Anxiety. (6) Smile more often
and forgive.
As we all know, stress is inevitable,
but if we take the right measures
we can avoid its detrimental effects
on our mental and physical health.
If you are looking for professional
guidance and an effective way to
eliminate stress while balancing the
mind, body and spirit, visit my
website www.aderoherbals.com for
more information. Blessed Love
Family
THE 411 ON THE 514
By: Brian Kotler
W
hat was anticipated to be
an exciting year for
Reggae music in
Montreal has quickly faded away. If
any of you remember what I wrote
in the Spring Edition, I now have to
eat my words. The following is an
update of the Reggae
presentations for the summer in
Montreal.
Sadly, for the second year in a row,
there will be NO Montreal
International Reggae Festival.
What was once the flagship
Reggae event in Canada has now
been left “on hold or on pause” for
the second year in a row. Really
hope it returns for 2020.
Most of the other “one-day”
festivals seem to occur during the
first half of summer. Kicking off the
2019 season is the Montreal Jerk
Fest on June 24th which is (St.
Jean Baptiste Day), followed by
Montreal’s Carifiesta – Carnival
Mas Parade on July 6th. Then the
clash of festivals! With Jamaica
Day, Spice Isle Day (Grenada),
Taste of the Caribbean and Jah9
performing at the Les Nuits
D’Afrique Festival all on July 13th
along with a host of other “afterparty”
events later that evening.
On July 20th, Grenada Day and
that’s about it for Montreal. There
are various other festivals but very
little geared towards the Caribbean
Music genres of reggae, dancehall
or soca. However, there is the
Osheaga Music and Arts Festival,
which on August 4th will be
showcasing one of the hottest
artistes in the business, Koffee.
Later in the summer is the
Chateauguay Jerk Food Festival
on August 10th and 11th which is a
new arrival on the scene located in
the suburb of Chateauguay just off
the island of Montreal.
In everything we try to gauge the
positive and we would like to
suggest that there is plenty of
opportunity for new festivals and
shows to head up the 401 to
Montreal where there is still a huge
Reggae/Caribbean Music fan
base. Therefore, we encourage
entertainment entrepreneurs to
take a look at our city and make it
happen. Opportunity is knocking!
Once again, I would like to big up
“Jones and Jones Productions Ltd”
for bringing their “Legends Show”
not only to Toronto but Montreal as
well, here is hoping more will
follow. There are still plenty of
eager music connoisseurs and
culturally conscious supporters
who are looking for Caribbean
centred festivals and events on a
big scale. So, until then we will
continue to enjoy the smaller
indoor events and spend more
time in the “SIX” than in the “La
Belle Province” this summer.
DESI RANKS
W
orking with other artistes in the industry can be very fulfilling some
times, especially when they know what they want. It has been a
very rewarding year for Desi Ranks. He has just built a brand new
sound system, the “3 Mirage Sound”, which he didn’t realize was going to
be as huge as it is. He has always been encouraged to build one as that’s
where he started with Aces International Sound and King Yellow Man.
Desi has a brand new track being released on the Iyon Lion Records
compilation “Journey Man”, alongside Guidance, Jah Mason, Turbulence
and more. Being an artiste, engineer, producer and more, is not the easiest
task but he gets the job done every time. As CEO of 3 Mirage Studio, there
is always a lineup of veteran artistes that’s always being inspired by him
and that inspires him also. Artistes like Junior Reid, Leroy Gibbons, Admiral
Tibet, Jigsy King, Macka Diamond, Mr Bertus, Blessed, Horace Martin,
Prince Everald, Donna Makeda, his very own daughter Vonnii, and more.
He has a few tracks playing on Irie FM and Hitz 92 in Jamaica right now and
if you’ve been there lately you may have heard them; “In A Di Copter”, “Life”,
Can’t Hustle Me” and “Dancehall Nice Again”. Desi Ranks is currently
working on his album “Big Dream”, and he is being very selective about the
tracks that are on it. Look out for the album soon because you will have a
favorite. So remember, if you ever need to get your music in order, do give
him a visit in Hamilton Ontario because you will be inspired by the hard
work and dedication they have at the 3 Mirage Studio. Check out their ad in
artist and sound system selector, Exco realized his gift for writing
significant lyrics, and weaving those lyrics with song. Also an adept piano
player, Exco has crafted some of the most thought provoking singles in
Reggae since 2009. Exco has written almost 200 songs and in 2015, Levi
released his debut album “Country Man” two weeks after receiving his 4th
consecutive JUNO. In September 2016 Levi‘re-fixed’ his first Canadian
recording, aptly titled “Oh Canada”. The song, a tribute to his ‘home away
from home’, was CBC Radio’s Song of the week during Canada’s
sesquicentennial celebrations. CTV news called it Canada’s new anthem.
Jamaican/Canadian musician Exco Levi pays tribute to the founders of
reggae music through a modern twist of poetry and sound. On a mission
to deliver his message to the world, Exco has performed European tours,
California’s Reggae on the River, Sierra Nevada World Music Festival,
Spain’s Rototom, Jamaica’s Sting and Rebel Salute, Canada’s major
reggae festivals (including Jambana One World Festival) and feature
performances in Zimbabwe and Malawi. This multiple award winning
artist’s songs are just as potent on his lips as they are on records and
many colorful collaborations including Busy Signal, Chronixx, Kabaka
Pyramid and producer Donovan Germain attest to that.
5 TIMES JUNO WINNER AND LOCAL
REGGAE KING EXCO LEVI
S
ummer 2017, Toronto Star billed Exco Levi “local reggae King”.
True. Levi holds the best winning percentage in Canada’s JUNO
Awards. He has been nominated the 7 times he submitted and has
won 5 times. Having penned more than 150 songs across his already
impressive career, including for 2017’s critically acclaimed release
“Narrative”, reggae artist Exco Levi continues his status as a must-hear
contributor to the Canadian music scene.
Exco takes unique claim to having the best winning percentage in the
entire history of the national accolades (Anne Murray holds 24 wins to 52
nominations and Celine Dion holds 20 wins to 72 nominations). This
should make him a house hold name in Canada, but Exco Levi in a firm
yet laid back way says his goal is 1 of Canada’s 26 million. The rest of the
world should be a bonus. Levi’s sophomore album NARRATIVE was
released on November 24, 2017 and with his band High Priest, Exco
toured Montreal, Maine, Minesota, New York and Connecticut, Multi stops
across Ontario: Burlington, London, downtown Toronto, Blue Mountain
and his home town Brampton. West Coast stops in Vancouver Island and
Harrison Hot Springs, Muncton on Canada’s East and a European run to
Austria, Finland and Germany. Taking, barely a pause, Levi is finalizing
release of a winter single and video that will introduce an extension of the
Exco Levi brand.
With music at his core, Exco Levi is one of Reggae’s most attractive
voices delivering uplifting messages wrapped in engaging melodic
compositions. Born in Manchester, Jamaica, Exco migrated to Canada
and pursued music as a career. Following in the footsteps of his father, an
Exco has received awards for ‘Promising New Artist’ (Canadian Reggae
Music Awards 2007), ‘Song of the Year’ (Irie Music Awards 2011) and
‘Artist of the Year’ for 2011; and September 2016, EXCO Levi received his
Star in the Brampton Arts Walk of Fame beside fellow achievers, Actor,
Alan Thicke, Comedian Russell Peters and playwright Trey Anthony. Exco
Levi was handpicked by VP Records for the single “Rasta Children”, on
the Dennis Brown Tribute album. “One Suit” was featured in the Television
Series Private Eyes. “Welcome The King” was licensed and featured in
the film ‘Chameleon’. Exco’s message of positivity is powerful. His ability
to captivate his audience, earned him the performance spot for the first
reggae artist ever at Nathan Phillips Square for Toronto’s Canada 150
New Year’s Eve celebration 2016. His 2017 summer tour kicked off with
3 California performances sharing the stage with Chronixx, Gentleman
and Assassin. Exco continues to be a global ambassador for positive,
conscious music, cognizant of the message he delivers to the fans.
“Narrative” has reggae’s global heavy hitters on the album. Germany’s
leading Reggae producers Silly Walks Discotheque, in collaboration with
Austria’s Irievibrations Records as well as Josi Coppola and the Evolution
Band, have rebuilt existing and cut new tracks to host Levi’s mellow
vocals. From Jamaica Levi’s first producer Penthouse is back on
“Narrative” and Canadian producers Vic Park fly the maple leaf on the
track “Wiseman”. Vocally the reggae firebrand Sizzla joins Levi in “Burn”,
for the album’s only collaboration. Levi released the Dancehall single and
video “Wah Gwaan” on December 1, 2018; produced by Brent Messado
from Wurl Trema Music, the single dips into international Dancehall
rhythmically while the lyrics remain conscious and playful. The “Wah
Gwaan” video was shot in the Parish of Clarendon, Jamaica by Warrior
Film JA. Levi’s colleague and friend Busy Signal with whom he has toured
and recorded guests in the video. “Our team pursues all opportunities in
Canada and globally,” Levi muses. “2018 has been a good year, and there
are new Canadian territories to reach as we continue the Exco Levi
movement. We are expanding in Canada and the rest of the world is a
bonus.” December 2018. Management: Jones & Jones |
ReggaeX: Update on Cue Kirk
CK: Blessed love Family, right now
I’m in the studio working on my
be ready for release later this
summer.
legacy of Miss Lou.
ReggaeX: On your recent trip to
Africa
CK: Africa was amazing! I had the
opportunity to meet amazing
musicians and artistes from
communities all over Kenya who
like me, believe that Art and Music
have the power to uplift the spirit
and transform lives. We came
together in Kibera, Kenya at Masai
Mbili Art Studio to film the video for
my first single “Kush (Where I’m
From)”. Check it out on YouTube or
about being In Kenya, was that
know Reggae found its way home
in the streets and soul of the
Motherland. I want to send love to
LADY G
Longevity in any business means that one must always adapt and change
with the times as the market dictates. From the inception, that is what Lady
G was all about. Born and raised in Spanish Town, Jamaica, she busted
out early and has not slowed down. It has been over 30 years since she
recorded her first hit “Nuff Respect” and still Lady G is just as relevant
today as she was back then. With dozens of hits and graced stages all
over the world, her positive vibes (and lyrics) and class represent well.
In late 2018 she decided to re-mix and up grade her 2015 EP titled “Smile”
produced by Indie Rootz Records. While it was an excellent EP, she
always felt like there was something missing. And guess what, we found it!
“Smile, Version 2.0” remixed and mastered from top to bottom, is a true
second incarnation, sprinkled with a few new extras, such as an all new
Soca remix of her hit “After Work Party”; as well as one of her new hits
produced by GT Muzik. The ‘new’ EP will delight all current Lady G and
Dancehall and Caribbean music fans around the world as well as gain her
some new ones. Once again, Indie Rootz Records has taken it to another
level, but when working with Lady G, there is no other way.
Lady G is scheduled to tour Europe this summer while a return to Canada
is currently in the planning stages for later in the Fall of 2019. “Smile,
Version 2.0” the EP, will be distributed by VPAL Music and is slated to be
released in August 2019 on all digital platforms. Indie Rootz Records
(Brian Kotler and Bobby Pottinger) is based in Montreal, Canada. Check
DEBBIE DEFIRE
Introducing the brand new single “Bongo Land”
feat. G. Nako. Singer Songwriter Debbie Defire
has re-emerged on the music scene. She has
recently collaborated with Tanzanian hip hop
artiste, Rosa Ree on a chart climbing tune
entitled, “Dip n’ Whine It”. Debbie Defire as she
is known in the many communities of her
beloved city of Chicago, IL, USA for years,
graced multiple music venues, mostly The Wild
Hare, Reggae capital of the world, where she
commanded the stage with her haunting vocals
in three part harmony. Look out for much more
to come from her.

Koffee, who got her name after ordering a coffee on a boiling hot day
while everyone else opted for soda, began her musical life as a child in
the church choir. Here, she learnt melody and harmony; at the age of 12,
she taught herself guitar after a friend lent her his spare one. She began
writing lyrics in her bedroom after being inspired by the reggae singer
Protoje; just a few lines here and there, initially, a chorus or a verse. In
2016, she accidentally auditioned for her school talent show, and won.
“They had a show in the cafeteria one day and people were going up to
perform poems and songs. My friends encouraged me to go up and
perform so I did and the place loved it. I had no idea it was an audition
until my name got called over the intercom.”
Koffee’s following started to build and was further enhanced in 2017 when
she jumped on Upsetta Records’ Ouji Riddim, made popular by Jamaican
legends Busy Signal and Luciano. Her version was “Burning”, which you
can hear being played all over Jamaica right now. “Burning” utilizes a
heavy bassline and features a beautifully hypnotic chorus. “Burning came
from a disappointing experience,” remembers Koffee. “I applied for 6th
Form but I didn’t get in and I felt really disappointed by that. So “Burning”
was an inspiration to me, to push myself forward to say, ‘You can’t let this
out your flame’. Literally it was me parking a fire within myself to go
forward and excel in something else, because education didn’t look like it
was working out. I say ‘Me have a burning sound, me a burn the city
down’; I meant, like, lighting a fire in Kingston, bringing that energy.”
She quickly caught the eye of those in the know; in January 2018, reggae
hero Coco Tea bought Koffee onto the stage at Rebel Salute; her idol
Protoje also asked her to perform with him, while Chronixx, one of the
island’s biggest contemporary reggae stars, invited Koffee to join him on
Seani B and Mistajam’s recent 1Xtra shows broadcast from Big Yard
studios in Jamaica. Now “Raggamuffin” is lighting up Jamaican airwaves,
with Koffee preparing her debut EP due for release later this summer.
ABOUT KOFFEE
“M
e? I’m just down to earth.” 18-year-old musician Mikayla
“Koffee” Simpson may be small in stature and disarmingly
unassuming but her modesty and height belies huge amounts
of talent. The 5’0, self-described “sing-jay-guitarist” is one of the most
exciting, forward thinking, and globally focused teenage talents to emerge
in 2018.
Born in Spanish Town, just outside of Kingston, Jamaica, Koffee was
bought up alone by her hard working mother, her father having left for
New York when Koffee was an infant. “Mummy struggled so I didn’t have
to,” remembers Koffee. An occasional actress who works for the Ministry
of Health and who gives sex education and body positivity talks to young
people, Koffee’s mum sheltered her daughter from a lot of the violence
that afflicted their community. “I was aware of curfews and shootings
growing up but it wasn’t necessarily a reality for me because I didn’t
experience anything directly,” she says. “I would hear about gunshots
over in [neighboring] Gordon Pen, but where I live, in Eltham View, it’s a
mellow vibe. It’s a pretty friendly community, we know each other for the
most part and we get along well.”
Though she was able to avoid explicit scenes of bloodshed, the sociopolitical
problems that permeate parts of Jamaica have seeped into her
music, helping to make Koffee the artist she is today. “With a lot of my
music, it’s about entertaining people while highlighting problems in order
to try and find a solution. I genuinely want to make the world a better
place.”
Describing herself as sitting somewhere between a singer, a rapper
(known as a DJ in Jamaica) and a guitarist, Koffee’s current output has
tended towards the more traditional Jamaican rhythms. But while reggae
is on the agenda at the moment, Koffee intends to take in the many artists
who have influenced her over the years, from Proteje and Supercat to St
Louis rapper Smino and UK Rap star Giggs. “I learn a lot from flows; when
I listen to music, that’s what I’m tuned into, that’s what I want to continue
to experiment with. I can see myself doing bashment, dancehall,
everything.” The possibilities are endless for this talented songwriter and
singjay.. “I’m not going to limit myself. I see myself doing many things in
the future, I’m not going to narrow myself to one thing. I want to try it all.”
Indeed, there are no restrictions to this teenager’s talents. This isn’t
someone making music for “likes” and money; success holds much more
weight to Koffee than followers and brand deals, accolades and awards.
“I want to bring positive change to the world because I think the world
needs that more than just individual success,” she points out. “My
personal success could be ten cars and a big house but that doesn’t
influence many people other than me and the people around me who
benefit from that. I want to be a positive movement and make a positive
movement, at the same time. I want to bring vibes and positive change. I
want to impact the world.”
Koffee will be live onstage at Jambana One World Festival 2019 on
August 5th, at the Phoenix Concert Theatre, 410 Sherbourne St., Toronto.
Tickets are $40 in advance. Don’t miss your chance of coming out to see
this young superstar.
JUA OF JAPAN
J
apan, the land of the rising
Sun is where Jua (which
means “Sun” in Swahili) is
from as are her ancestors. Jua’s
spiritual and natural connection
is a very strong one for this
particular reason. On a musical
level, a strong force compels
her to put the spiritual
messages that she receives to
a melody and thus is a total
intimacy and meditation to Jua
in the world of music. Jua’s
music is indeed very rare as it is
a combination of her Japanese
cultural background with reggae
vibes.
Jua is not only a talented and rare musician, she is also an artist in many
mediums, and owns the Tico’s Temple in Montreal, Canada which is an
Art Studio where she does nail art, and also teaches Qi Gong and Taichi
which is an ancient Chinese holistic treatment. Jua’s mission is to convey
through her music a message to all the beings, the forgotten divine way
of nature, and bring back the balance in people. Also to break the barriers
that has developed between wombmen and increase unification; and give
back and lift the energy of our divine mother earth, using our divine
Father’s guidance and abundance, and educate the youth for elevation!
Jua is currently working on an EP with a Producer in US Network 1
Entertainment forming a foundation of Qi gong workshop in Ohio to help
the community of wombman. Soon there will be collaboration with Indie
Rootz Records in Montreal Canada. Tours are coming up in the U.S.
Canada, Japan, and Africa. Follow Jua on Instagram @jua_of_japan or
FUJAHTIVE
F
ujahtive will be performing on Day 2, Monday August 5th, 2109 at
the Jambana One World Festival. Fujahtive was originally formed in
1986 when all the original members were still high school students.
Jamaican born lead vocalist Winston Ho-Sang transferred from Oakwood
Collegiate to Forest Hill Collegiate where he met Anthony Goldstein in
music class. They quickly bonded over their mutual love of reggae music
and decided that they had to put a band together with members from each
of the schools well respected music programs. Soon after, Winston Ho-
Sang’s identical twin brother Wayne Ho-Sang joined the very surprised
band at rehearsal and for a while audiences were seeing double on lead
vocals.
The band has always insisted on having a powerful three piece horn
section as a feature of their music. Dubbed the “Ras Brass”, this horn
driven brand of reggae made the band a very popular local live act in
Toronto as well as a regular touring act across Canada throughout the late
1980s and 1990s.
The band’s “Send fi mi girl” video off the 1991 album “In Black and White”
was one of the first Canadian reggae videos to crack the Much Music
regular rotation. That same year they were invited to guest host and play
live on the innovative and wildly popular MuchMusic show Xtendamix
along with host Master T. The band eventually took a break in 2006 before
regrouping on November 7, 2014 for a sold out benefit concert in Toronto.
In 1995 Fujahtive’s second album “The Sound” was nominated for a
Canadian Juno award. The band has had the great fortune to be opening
act for many of its musical influences including Yellowman, Burning
Spear, Gregory Isaacs, Sly & Robbie, Culture, Linton Kwesi Johnson,
Judy Mowatt, Eek-a-mouse, Shinehead and most recently Luciano
(2016). It will certainly be a musical treat to see Fujahtive live onstage on
August 5th at the Phoenix Concert Theatre along with Exco Levi and
Koffee. Stay tuned for more on Fujahtive.
BENETO
B
eneatto Roberto Lazarus (Beneto), son of dancehall reggae icon
Little John, was born September 4th 1978 and resides in Arnette
Gardens (Trench Town), where the great reggae superstar Bob
Marley is from. Beneatto has been in love with reggae music from a very
young age while attending St Aloysius School. He has a great admiration
for Ghost and Elvis Presley. Leaving St. Aloysius and attending Trinity
High School, his love for the music continued, at this time he was going
by the name of Singing Teeth. During this time he was doing concerts in
his and other neighboring communities.
After Beneatto graduated from high school he worked as a mechanic at
Challenger Transport and continued to work the streets hard in the music
business. Whilst doing a show, the King of the Dancehall Beenie Man
called Beneatto on stage to perform; the response from the crowd was so
great that Beenie Man changed Beneatto’s name to Mighty Teeth.
However in 2002 he took his career to another level and changed his
stage name to Beneto, which is his Christian name with a little twist to the
spelling.
Beneto’s first release was entitled “Shake Your Body” for Stone Love
Production in 2002, which in the same year he won the first prize for Stone
Love Production. He later went on to do other recordings for producer Phil
Matthias of Sonic Recording Studio and Isaiah Laing of Supreme
Productions and promoter of Sting which at the time was the greatest one
night reggae show in Jamaica. Beneto has worked on a number of shows.
On the local market, he has done Sting, Curefest, Curryfest and
Champions in Action just to name a few. Internationally he has done
Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Canada and has shared the stage with
numerous veterans in the business.
Beneto became the president of Catalyst Entertainment Group in 2012
after teaming up with another local artiste from Trench Town, Queen
Kamarla. He has done Bob Marley Festival, Peter Tosh Memorial and
Capleton’s Birthday Bash also Sugar Minott’s Birthday Bash. His latest
release is entitled “Murderer” and he just finished his soon to be released
“Black Lips Girl” for Knocksoft Entertainment on the Shirt Riddim by
3Mirage Studio in Hamilton, Ontario. Beneto can be contacted at: 1 (876)
