Things to Know When Relocating in
Adelaide
By: Adam Wiese
(University of Adelaide)
Abstract
South Australia is such a beautiful part of the Australian landscape and its
capital Adelaide is well worth considering as your new place to live. In
Adelaide, there are a huge number of opportunities to study alongside,
collaborate with and become part of its many major thriving industries. Here
are some of the top reasons you should live or study in Adelaide.
1.0 Introduction
Adelaide is the perfect place to live and explore on a student budget. Of the top
five most popular Australian study destinations with international students in
2017, Adelaide was the second most affordable city in terms of average rental

price (AU$213 per week). On the one hand, Adelaide has all the benefits of a
thriving city. But on the other, it can be refreshingly laid-back, quiet and
relaxed. Here are some important things you should know before moving to
Adelaide.
2.0 Reasons Why Adelaide is the Best City to live
in Australia
If you’ve never given the city of Adelaide much thought, then boy are you
missing out. Not only does this city have an amazing collection of places to eat,
drink and visit, all within the CBD, but it’s also surrounded by beautiful nearby
regions, that are just waiting to be explored.
Not yet convinced? Well, to help further support our theory that Adelaide may
just be the best city on the planet, we’ve made a list of just some of the reasons
why below. Once you read about this city’s offering when it comes to quality of

life and bang for your buck, you might just have no choice than to agree with
us. Prepare to be wowed.
1. The weather scores an A+
Sydney can often be too humid over summer, Melbourne is known for always
being cloudy and grey, but when it comes to Adelaide — well, it may just have
the perfect weather in comparison. Despite the fact that Adelaide suffers from
the odd heatwaves over summer, it doesn’t involve drowning in hot, sticky,
air, and as for winter, well, there’s no such thing as unbearably cold days, so
this is a win-win in our books.

2. The beaches are beautiful (and uncrowded)
With all that good weather, it’s time to head to the beach! But there’s no need
to get frustrated by Bondi’s crowded beaches or pretend to like the not-sowhite
sands of St Kilda Beach, as the beaches in Adelaide can provide a
respite. We’re talking Brighton, Henley, and Glenelg — just some of the many
beautiful beaches that Adelaide has to offer. Oh and there’s also Semaphore, a
bustling beachside neighbourhood located just a 14 kilometres drive south of
Adelaide.
3. Your appetite will be spoilt for choice...
Adelaide is home to countless eateries and restaurants, spoiling locals and
visitors alike when it comes to eating out. This can range from UR Caffe, a
popular, down-to-earth cafe, perfect for a no-fuss brekky and coffee, all the
way to Orana, a fancy pants, modern restaurant where each meal served is
like a work of art.
4. ...the same goes for your your thirst
From hidden bars tucked away in a lane-way to rooftop bars offering stunning
views, this city, much like Melbourne, offers a variety of watering holes —
minus all the pretentious nonsense. There’s Udaberri, a small, low lit bar
dwelling along a cobbled laneway off Hindley Street with a European theme.
Or there’s 2KW, an airy, designer venue with a rooftop bar sporting sparkly
city views.

5. You can even sample fresh produce at the Adelaide Central Market...
One of the largest undercover markets in the southern hemisphere, Adelaide
Central Market is the city’s food meca. Here you can grab a coffee at Fair
Espresso, devour freshly baked goods over at Dough, followed by sampling
some cheese at The Smelly Cheese Shop. Almost every food stall offers
generous tastings too, and you really can’t go wrong with that.

6. ...or have a BBQ on a boat
Ever heard of Adelaide’s BBQ Buoys? Well, prepare to have your mind blown.
Take a stroll down Adelaide’s Riverbank precinct, toward the edge of the
River Torrens, and you may just spot some people floating along the river on a
circular boat (unattended), enjoying a sausage sizzle with a gas grill in the
centre. To boot, the boats range from couple sized right up to a ten seater,
with hourly rentals starting at $69. Just BYO drinks and sausages, of course.
7. Public transport is easy breezy
Forget being squashed like sardines on the trains of Sydney, or solving the
Rubik's Cube that is the tram circuits of Melbourne — Adelaide does public
transport so well that even the most inept commuter could find their way
around the city — all whilst keeping their personal space in check, no less.
Many city transport services are also free, including buses, plus there are also
free bicycles available to use around the CBD, promoting a healthier and
greener lifestyle.

8. Everything is only a halfa’ away
Almost everything worth visiting in Adelaide is no more than a 30-minute
drive from anything else. No, this is not a mind trick, and yes, you read that
right. With the city being laid out in a grid, traffic is almost non existent and
it's quite literally impossible to get lost. Jealous yet, Sydneysiders?

9. It’s known for being the ‘Festival City’
Ask any local of this city and they’ll likely tell you (proudly) that Adelaide is
indeed one of the best cities in the world when it comes to hosting year-round
festivals. These include the Adelaide Festival, WOMADelaide, the FEAST
Festival, Adelaide Fringe, OzAsia, IndoFest and the Spirit Festival — just to
name a few!
10. The culture also checks in
Some of South Australia’s major arts and cultural institutions lie right in the
heart of Adelaide’s CBD. This includes the State Library of South Australia, the
Adelaide Botanic Gardens, the South Australian Museum, the Art Gallery of
South Australia, the Adelaide Festival Centre andAdelaide Zoo. Many of these
are near the North Terrace campus of The University of Adelaide, meaning
you can count on this area to always be bustling.

11. You can take your pick at the many nearby wine regions
From the Barossa Valley to McLaren Vale, the Adelaide Hills to Clare Valley —
Adelaide holds some of the most prized wine regions, all in its own backyard.
Heck, there’s even a specialised Uber service uniquely available in Adelaide
Hills called ‘UberVINO’, helping you get around safely from one winery to the
next. The only other place this service is available is in Perth’s Swan Valley.
Now if this isn’t a sign that they take their wine seriously here, we don’t know
what does.

12. Or you can go wine tasting without even leaving the city
But just in case you’d prefer to sample wines without leaving the city at all,
Adelaide also has your back in this regard. Enter the National Wine Centre
located on the edge of the Botanic Gardens, home to Australia's ‘largest tasting
room experience’, where you can sample from a range of 120 different
Australian wines — all dispensed from the state of-the-art Enomatic servers.
13. Living costs are (way) cheaper
Last, but most certainly not least — your hard earned money will go further
Adelaide. According to research published in 2017, Adelaide was the second

most affordable city in terms of average rental price (AU$213 per week),
versus that of both Sydney (AU$285) and Melbourne (AU$258). This same
report also showed that the cost of living in Adelaide is 21% less expensive
than Melbourne and 23% less than Sydney. In other words — here in
Adelaide, you can have your smashed avo on toast and damn well eat it, too.
3.0 Best Suburbs to live in Adelaide
ADELAIDE’s top 10 suburbs in which to live, work and play have been
revealed in innovative research which compares the city with itself for the
first time.
Using 35 measures including home affordability, crime rates and job
accessibility, the CityPulse Adelaide study ranks the top suburbs into the three
groups and produces detailed insights to guide future planning.
Adelaide’s top 10 suburbs are unique for Australian capital cities in that they
are relatively close to the CBD, primarily because inner-suburban homes
interstate are significantly more expensive.

The report, produced by professional services firm PwC Australia, determines
inner-western Plympton is Adelaide’s most liveable suburb, followed by nearneighbour
Richmond, and the northeastern suburbs of Paradise-Newton
(some are grouped together) and Windsor Gardens.
Richmond, Plympton, Windsor Gardens, Goodwood-Millswood and Unley-
Parkside rate in the top 10 for all three groupings of live, work and play.
PwC Adelaide managing partner Kim Cheater said areas such as Plympton and
Richmond rated highly on housing affordability but also were very close to the
CBD and transport options. The report also highlights Paradise and Windsor
Gardens’ home affordability.
“This demonstrates the great potential for Adelaide and its attractiveness for a
future workforce as there are so many highly liveable areas, close to facilities
and where there are affordable housing options,” the report says.
Statistics used to determine the “live” rating include:
ACCESS to amenities such as schools, childcare, aged care and universities;
CRIME rates against people and property;
COMMUNITY health and access to medical centres, dentists and hospitals;
HOUSING affordability, including property prices, building approvals, rental
and mortgage payments.
Greater Adelaide is highlighted as “a great city for workers’ accessibility” in
the report, which declares this is more pronounced than in other cities and is
likely a reflection of “how easy it is to commute”.
“The strong ‘live’ results for Plympton, Goodwood, Paradise and Windsor
Gardens demonstrate the enormous value light transport options, such as
trams and the O-Bahn, have delivered to enhance accessibility,” the report
says.

“Adelaide is a very accessible city but there is a clear opportunity to enhance
light transport options.”
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the Adelaide CBD is the highest rated for the “work”
top 10, followed by Toorak Gardens, Windsor Gardens, Richmond, Plympton,
Unley-Parkside, Mawson Lakes-Globe Derby Park, Goodwood-Millswood,
Mitcham and North Adelaide and Glenelg ranked as equal-tenth.
The “work” measure is compiled using economic factors including business
activity, employment rates, access to jobs, welfare dependency and economic
performance. The Adelaide CBD also is top-rated on the “play” measure, which
considers aspects such as entertaining, dining, bars, retail centres, sports and
fitness facilities and access to open space, such as parks, ovals and beaches.
The report argues the importance of maintaining momentum from sporting
and cultural investments in the CBD, saying the new Liberal government has
recognised this by focusing on the Old Royal Adelaide Hospital site as a “oncein-a-lifetime
opportunity” to develop a central hub supporting industry,
education, culture and heritage.
PwC predicts a proposed Aboriginal Art and Culture gallery there would
become a “major drawcard”.
WHY PLYMPTON IS NUMBER ONE
FOR diesel mechanic Jason Scott, it’s little surprise that Plympton is the toprated
place in Adelaide to live.
Jason and wife Renee, a paediatric intensive care nurse at the Women’s and
Children’s Hospital, have lived in the area for the past 13 years, raising their
three children.
Their North Plympton home is a relatively short drive from Renee’s work,
particularly when she has finished night shift. It’s also close to Goodwood and
Glenelg, where Jason and his son play football and baseball.

“We really love living there. We’ve got a great park across the road from us,
with a playground and a basketball and tennis court,” said Jason, 37.
“There’s heaps of stuff for our kids to do. They can get outside — they don’t
have to watch TV or play a computer game.”
Their children have “a bunch of friends” nearby and Jason says the family feels
secure in the quiet neighbourhood. They don’t notice much noise, if any, from
the relatively close Adelaide Airport.
“I can’t see us moving anywhere in the future,” he said.
“It’s fairly quiet and we don’t have anyone doing anything stupid, like
burnouts in the street or any of that sort of carry-on.”
PwC Adelaide managing partner Kim Cheater said the top rating for Plympton
(including North Plympton) reflected very good access to transport,
particularly the nearby tram.
Plympton rated equal-highest with Mt Barker on housing affordability,
including a good ratio on weekly rent to income and also had a high number of
building approvals.

PLANNING MAKES PERFECT IN MAWSON LAKES
MAWSON Lakes researcher Krasimir Vasilev and his family are reaping the
benefits of arguably the most lasting outcome of the ill-fated MFP project in
the 1990s.
In one of the final acts of the grandiloquently named Multifunction Polis, an
$850 million “Smart City” was conceived at Mawson Lakes and, ironically,
pitched as becoming a place to “live, work and play”.
Amid much controversy in late 1996, State Cabinet approved plans for about
4000 homes, a series of lakes to naturally cleanse stormwater and a business
precinct.
The so-called Smart City had previously been earmarked for Gillman and was
viewed as the key feature of the MFP, since the project was first suggested in
1987 by a visiting Japanese trade delegation.
This extensive planning, which culminated in a joint venture with private
consortium Delfin Lend Lease, has now been praised in the CityPulse report
for “getting it right”.
“This demonstrates the value of a co-ordinated and planned approach and
having the right combination of facilities to support people to live, work and
play in the area,” the report says, almost echoing old MFP promotional
material.
For Professor Vasilev, it’s a great mix. He works as a biomechanical researcher
into medical devices at the University of South Australia’s Mawson Lakes
campus and lives there with wife Agnieszka Mierczynska-Vasilev and their
daughter, Olivia, who goes to the local primary school.
“It’s a nice middle-class suburb not far from the city and northern beaches,
with nice lakes and parks. It’s close to work and school,” Professor Vasilev
said.

He started working there in 2005 and moved to the suburb in 2009. Until
2014, Dr Mierczynska-Vasilev also worked at UniSA but now is a research
scientist at the Urrbrae-based Australian Wine Research Institute.
Professor Vasilev enjoys living in a suburb dotted with trees, including in a
median strip opposite his house and at a nearby park.
“You look out of the bedroom window and see these trees, which is nice,” he
said.
Another attribute is being able to drop Olivia at school and get to his office
within about five minutes of leaving home. This proximity means he can pick
her up easily for judo, gymnastics and piano classes.
Professor Vasilev also works near the business precinct, where he sometimes
lunches with colleagues and, occasionally on weekends, with his family.
In an example of the MFP’s environmental goals, homes have recycled water.
But Professor Vasilev does not have broadband internet, relying on ADSL, so
the hi-tech city has not been fully realised.
4.0 Important Things to Do Before You Move
You've just signed the paperwork on a new home (congrats!). But soon the
excitement of getting settled at your new place will wear off, and the panic of
packing up boxes will set it. We've rounded up expert-approved tips to keep
you sane and totally prepared during the move.
1. Manage packing smartly.
"For my recent move, I gave myself a daily box quota to prevent a draining
weekend of non-stop packing," says Amy Azzarito, design writer and author of
Past & Present. Avoid boxing up your old place in one fell swoop, if you have
the time. Remember, you'lll need some energy left to unpack, too.

2. Skip the cardboard boxes.
Target Home Style expert and blogger Emily Henderson used California-based
company rentagreenbox.com for her most recent move. "A week before I
moved, they dropped off sturdy boxes with attachable lids and came back to
collect them once I unpacked," she says. "No cardboard boxes, taping, or
bubble wrap. Plus, its eco-friendly and can be cheaper than buying pricy
moving boxes." If you're not in Los Angeles, companies with similar business
models are popping up around the country and are just a Google search away.
3. Don't pack your closet.
"If you use professional movers, ask them to bring several wardrobe boxes on
the day of the move," suggests Emily Schuman, author of the blog Cupcakes
and Cashmere. "The movers take clothing right on the hangers and, woosh,
your clothes will be in and out." Bonus: You can skip a full day of ironing once
you're settled.
4. Switch your utilities.
This one may seem like a no-brainer, but Brendon DeSimone, author of Next
Generation Real Estate, says the timing is key: "As soon as you have a closing
date, call the utility companies and set up a service switch." This is especially
important if you're moving into a home that is newly built or previously
vacant: Arranging a maintenance call to reestablish service might be
necessary.
5. Make saying goodbye easier.
Moving from a home with sentimental value (your kids' growth-mark notches
in the doorframe!) can be gut wrenching. To ease the pain, Azzarito suggests
creating a Pinterest board with things you're excited to do in the new home,
like dream decorating or new things to do in that part of town. If you have
young kids, personal organizing guru Barbara Reich suggests taking a video of
each child talking about their favorite part of the house to preserve the
memories.
6. Haul the basics before the moving truck comes.

If your new place is within driving distance of your current home, plan to take
basic supplies over the day before, says Reich. "Unpacking the bathrooms in
advance and having pajamas and clothes for the next two days set aside will
bring some normalcy to the chaos of the boxes," she says.
7. Visualize life in your new home.
"Confession: I've been known to hang pictures while the movers have been
unrolling rugs," says interior designer Nate Berkus. While Berkus attributes
his hyper-organization to his Virgo star sign, we think he has a pretty good
point: "The sooner you get unpacked and organized, the sooner it feels like
home." If you move at a slower pace than Nate, plan out spots for your
favoriate pieces of art and décor in advance. You'll feel more accomplished
and settled if you do.
8. Meet your neighbors the fun way.
Sure, baked goods and a friendly hello will do the trick, but if you're going to
be painting the interior walls, Henderson has a fun party idea: "It's called a
graffiti party and guests are given paint samples or markers to scribble games
and notes on the wall." Don't be shy about hosting a gig sans furniture; this
relaxed party theme is built around pizza and folding chairs.
9. Discover the local resources.
Take a walk around your new neighborhood and be sure to introduce yourself
to people you pass by. DeSimone says this is the best way to get a
recommendation for a handy man, neighborhood favorite babysitter and get
to know the lay of the land. If your life was an ABC Sunday night drama, these
meet-and-greets would be peppered with salacious gossip on the
community's comings and goings (ha!).
4.0 Relocate Yourself or Get Professional Help
House relocation is perhaps the most crucial chores that come with oodles of
obstacles. You are the only one who is responsible for all the decisions you
make during a move. No doubt, there are multiple factors such as time,

complexity, and money that can affect your decision, but you can’t leave it in
the middle, especially if you are relocating to a new city.
Most of the people find it hard to decide whether to relocate the house alone
or hire the best removalists in Adelaide. If you are moving across the street or
town, a self-move can be a good option for you.
If you are moving across the city or state, then getting a professional
assistance can be an ideal option. Still, it is important to analyse everything
before making the final decision. Whether it’s about packing the belongings or
moving the heavy furniture, getting into a moving task needs some level of
expertise.
Here, in this post, we will cover the benefits and limitations of both the
moving methods: self-moving or hiring a professional removals company.
‣ Relocating Yourself
Benefits
1. Minimises moving cost
If you have a low moving budget, then a DIY move is an ideal option for you.
This is one of the biggest benefits of self-moving. You will get an opportunity
to save your money from hiring a professional moving company. In fact, you
can rent a moving truck from that saved money.
2. Complete control
It is always good to have a complete control over the entire relocation process.
If you are mature enough to take decisions on your own, then you will be able
to manage your move with ease. You can pack according to your priorities. It
means DIY move gives you more flexibility to decide when to start the process
and when to wrap up it.
Limitations

1. Lack of planning
may sound like plenty of time, but moving is a big job and there’s a lot of work
to be done. Start with giving your landlord an advanced notice of your
intentions to move, and review your lease to make sure there aren’t any
surprise clauses that would interfere with your relocation.
Create a Moving Timeline: This is also the time to search for moving
companies and compare pricing. Focus on what service fits best with your
needs, but try to stay within your budget. You should then create a to-do list
for the next coming weeks.
How To Prepare For A Move: 4 Weeks Out
Things to Remember Early on:
researching schools in your new area. Make a list of everything that you need
to pack your things, as well as a list of things you’re bringing with you.
Around four weeks before the move, start getting rid of clutter and things that
you don’t want to take with you. Have a garage sale or send off items that you
want to give to charity. Then, purchase supplies like scissors, markers, and
other packing materials to help you stay organized during the transition.

How To Organize A Move: 3 Weeks Out
Accomplish Those Moving Out Essentials:
When you get to this point, it’s time to kick things up a notch. Book your
moving company and schedule the date and time of the big day. Start packing
small things like books and other non-essential items. Be sure to label the
boxes so that you know exactly what they are when you get to your new place.
You should also contact the utility company to have your service moved to the
new location on your scheduled date of arrival. This is something that you’ll
definitely want to stay on top of so that your lights, gas, and cable will be on
and waiting for you.
Two Weeks Out On Your Moving Timeline
Finish Your Moving List:
By the time you get to two weeks out from your move, the fact that you’re
leaving your old place will start to seem real, if it hasn’t already. It’s now time
to clean out the fridge, and start eating foods that don’t need to be kept cold.
(Potato chips, anyone?) If you’re moving pets, prepare to have them
transported, or if they won’t be going with you, find them a new home. This is
also a good time to ensure that your car insurance is in order, and to tell the
insurance company about your intentions to relocate. If you’re leaving work,
then draft your two-week notice and turn it in as well.
Finishing Your Relocation Checklist: One Week Out
Final Moving Tips:
At the one-week mark, you should be knee deep in packing. Plan to personally
escort your jewelry and other expensive items to the new place. You should
also have a suitcase handy, packed with plenty of necessities, just in case your
moving truck arrives at the new house a bit later than you do. Another

important item to take care of at this time is the change of address with the
post office. Let’s review moving out week by week with our infographic.
Boxing It All Up
You’ll need boxes (and plenty of them) to fully organize your belongings. You
may be able to get them free from places like the office supply store,
bookstore, and the local grocery store. These businesses get deliveries on a
daily basis, and often have stacks of boxes on hand that they would be more
than happy to get rid of. Liquor stores and home improvement stores are also
good places to check.
It’s important to pay close attention to how you pack objects, as heavy items
will likely fall out the bottom of a box that’s not folded correctly.
The Night Before Your Move
Now that you’re all packed up and ready to go, there are still a few things left
to do the night before you move. First off, defrost the freezer and refrigerator,
and clean them out thoroughly. You should also clean your pantries and throw
out any old food containers. Check every room in the house and make sure
that there’s nothing left behind. You don’t want to leave that canvas print of
your children, or your go-to weekend sweatshirt. Be sure to vacuum and dust
every room, and leave the place in good condition before you head out.
Moving Day: Moving Into A New House
When the big day arrives, you’ll be more than anxious to finish the move. Do
your best to focus on moving on box at a time. Make sure you any pets are safe
as they’re transported separately or going off to a new home. You should also
pack your car with the expensive items that you’ll be transporting. Once
everything is out of the house, do a few checks of each room to make sure
nothing is left behind. Above all, take it easy, as it’s going to be a long day.
another. To make things easier, order calling cards to hand out the day
of.
doors so that movers know where to place the boxes.
Finally, check the utilities in the house before you settle in.
After The Move: House Checklist
Once you arrive at your new place, it’s important to update your address with
everyone that you associate or do business with. This includes the utility
companies, the Postal Service, cable and internet providers, and your
employer. Send a moving announcement to family and friends to give them
