BEYOND COMPERE
Host-With-The-Most Ryan Swain prepares to smash it out of the Park
We were delighted to talk to Ryan
Swain, main-stage host of Rock
The Park!
Hi, Ryan. Tell me a bit about Rock
The Park and what you’ll be doing
There are going to be number of top tribute
bands from across the world over three
stages in front of 15,000 people. They’ve
already sold 14,000 tickets so it’s going
to be huge.
I’ll be on the main stages on Saturday and
Sunday, but on Friday night, I’m doing a DJ
set for Clubland, a dance brand which has
been going since the late 90s and produces
these spectacular shows called Clubland
Events featuring artists like Cascada,
Basshunter, Scooter and Special D. They
have also released several compilation
albums, such as Clubland Classics and
100% Clubland.
So that’s a big thing for you…
Yeah, it is. I get to host lots of live gigs,
work with some massive acts and tour
with the show across Europe! We’ve got
some big ones coming up like ‘Clubland:
The Show’ in October. I’ll be dressed up
as PT Barnum for that because it’s got this
Cirque Le Soir vibe. It’s not just about it
being a rave any more, they’re trying to
rebrand the name and turn it into this huge
Tomorrowland thing.
OK, so who’s going to be
performing on the Friday night?
Well, Basshunter, The Outhere Brothers
who sang Boom, Boom, Boom, Ian van
Dahl – he had a massive hit with Castles in
the Sky, MC Keyes, Cover and The Blackout
Crew so genuine dance acts performing live
– it’s really going to go off!
How did you land the Clubland
thing?
I’ve been interested in Clubland since
I was a teenager. I love the music and I
6
know everything there is to know about the
artists. As to them signing me, I managed
to get my name out there to the people
running the brand: Keiran Keys, Terry
Slemen and Graham Turner, who is a part
of a dance act called Flip’n’Fill – they were
really big 10/20 years ago and had hits
called Shooting Star and Shakey Shimmy.
Ryan with Cascada
They asked me to be a face for the brand
and be a host and warm-up act. I’m not
just a radio presenter, I do DJ sets, I rap
a bit, I MC, I tell jokes. I’m an all-round
performer, not just a one-trick pony.
Are you doing other festivals over
the summer besides Wrexham?
Yeah, I’ll be presenting at loads of festivals
this year. I love performing in front of a real
audience on a real stage; I’m not interested
in something like Britain’s Got Talent or
Love Island. It’s my job to go out there,
build the anticipation and get the audience
really buzzing and engaged. I take a lot
of pride in what I do because there aren’t
a lot of people doing that. Some people
think that after appearing in a reality TV
programme, they can just go out and do
what I do. I’ve been doing this for over 10
years now and I know what it takes to work
a crowd.
Love Wrexham_Issue 2 August 2019.indd 6 24/07/2019 14:39

So what do you know about
Wrexham?
I know it’s really popular for dance events.
There’s a very good club in Wrexham
called Mojo which has been taken over by
Sam Foulkes, the guy organising Rock The
Park. He’s got some great ideas and some
big events planned so thegroundwork is
being laid for that. We have talked about
me doing a set there after Rock The Park.
I was reading that you’d worked
with Paul Gascoigne and Ronan
Keating…
I’ve worked closely with Paul for a few
years. I’ve done quite a few ‘Evening
With…’ shows with him so I’ve got to
know him well. We created a detailed
interview that talks about his lifestyle and
the significant events that have taken place
in his life and we address that in front of a
studio audience. They also get a meet-andgreet
and a photograph with him.
Paul’s a great guy. He’s a complete
whacko, but he’s a lovely person. I love his
spontaneity and he doesn’t take himself too
seriously. That’s probably why people give
him so much adulation.
I was very lucky enough to work with Ronan
Keating at Harrington Park in Sunderland in
front of 10,000 people. Ronan’s manager
knows me; He lives in York, and I live in
Malton which is not too far away so he
got me that gig really. Ronan enjoyed my
performance and said I bring a different
kind of energy which is a nice thing for
With Karen Parry and Kelly Llorenna
him to say. He got helicoptered in, then
helicoptered out. It was all very rushed, but
I managed to get a good picture with him;
he’s a cool guy.
You had an operation on your
heart when you were four, but
you’ve also done a recordbreaking
skateboarding event. The
heart problem doesn’t hold you
back, then?
Even when I was poorly with it, I was still a
very active child. I was very thin,
but then suddenly put on a lot
of weight so you could tell that
there was something not right.
I had this thing called ductus
arteriosus where a valve in your
heart is open when you’re born
that should close off. Mine didn’t
unfortunately which led me to
develop this ‘hole in my heart’.
I went to the cardiology hospital
in Leeds and they basically saved my life.
All that’s given me a positive approach on
life and has made me the person I am.
It’s also made me more grateful: when you
go through a life-changing
experience like that, it puts
things into perspective and
makes you appreciate things
more.
I’ve done stuff for charities
nationwide. It’s vital to give
something back and more so
now I’ve got my name out
there a bit more and people
know who I am. If you can
use your name, your status and your talent
to its maximum potential, it can change
lives and help people.
You’ve also raised awareness for
ADHD…
I’m a big campaigner for ADHD. I was
diagnosed with it quite late, mainly because
I was failed by the education system, but
I knew that I had it. It started to affect
me a little bit more in later life as I
came out of my teenage years and into
my twenties. I saw a darker side to it
and that’s when I got some help and
guidance.
I’m not on any medication at all now:
I know how to control and deal with it
naturally. I try and inspire other people,
younger people especially, not to go
down the medication route. That’s very
important because then you rely on it
and that’s a very easy trap to fall into.
The problem with ADHD is some of the
medication is highly stimulative and
they don’t always tell you what they’re
giving you.
My family keep me grounded: My fiancée,
Natalia, is a dancer. She works at
With Danny Dyer
Flamingoland, that’s where we met. I was
working as a head compere there and we
were on the same team. You know you’re
onto a good thing when you can work with
someone and maintain a stable relationship
with them. The twins were conceived at
Flamingoland! We were sharing a dorm and
we didn’t have a television so we had to
make our own entertainment!
Are the twins going to follow you
into show business?
I’d say it’s likely, yeah. They love dancing,
singing, ballet and musical theatre and go
to a dance expression class. They’re really
into the film ‘The Greatest Showman’ so
they’re showing signs already, but whatever
they do if they’re happy, I’m happy.
Great! Thanks, Ryan. I wish you all the best
with Rock The Park!
Eating out
The North Wales Foodies Have Been
Out Doing Their Thing!
Every month we try to include some
independent reviews of local eateries.
This month we feature three places:
Woody’s, The Three Eagles and Honey’s.
We’re hoping our reviewers will be
regular contributors to the magazine – I’ll
let them introduce themselves!
Welcome to our column. We are Mr & Mrs
North Wales Foodies, just your average couple
who love food. We are particularly passionate
about local, independent food producers that
use locally sourced ingredients and we try to
support small businesses who put a lot of love
into what they do.
We can be found at foodie markets, food
festivals and independent eateries. We
are so lucky to have access to these things in
our locality and shout from the rooftops about
all the delicious stuff we eat! Hope you enjoy
our page.
If you’d like to see more, follow us on
Instagram @NorthWalesFoodies or on
Facebook.com/northwalesfoodies
What can we say about Woody’s?
Freshly-made dough, the finest local
ingredients, street-food vibes and all made
with Woody’s unique flair and distinctive
wood-fired oven. It’s an absolute treat
for any Wrexham foodie. Choose from
classic toppings, such as the meat feast,
pepperoni and mushroom or something more
adventurous, such as the famous “Ring of
Fire”. Find them on the Majestic Wine/
Bkoncept car park (opposite Wrexham General
station) from Wednesday to Friday, 4pm-9pm.
The Three Eagles in Llangollen
has everything you could ask for in a
restaurant: lovely rustic surroundings,
a great atmosphere, friendly staff and
of course some fantastic food! All the
ingredients are locally sourced, showing
off what fantastic produce our little
Travel
Seven reasons to make Mauritius top of
your travel to-do list in 2019 by Paulina Twarog
Mauritius is hot for 2019 so if you’re looking to try a new destination, we highly recommend this
luxurious island. Located in the Indian ocean, Mauritius may be a long-haul flight, but when you
step off that plane, you’ll be on your own little paradise island with a variety of things to see and do.
Whether you’re looking for sun, sea and spa getaways or an action-packed holiday that’s fun for
all the family, Mauritius really has it all. Still not convinced? Then here are seven reasons to visit
Mauritius in 2019…
More than just a beach holiday
Unlike other luxury islands such as the Maldives or Seychelles which
are very much about sun, sea and sand, Mauritius offers so much more
than that. More than just a beach holiday, you can take part in a variety
of water sports and land activities that will get you off the sun lounger
and exploring everything the destination has to offer.
And the best part is, most resorts include many of these activities for
free. Try your hand at jet skiing or scuba diving or play a spot of golf at
one of the islands many golf courses. Head out on a boat tour or spend
the afternoon snorkelling in the bay, the list is endless!
The perfect weather
Those who like to holiday in the Caribbean, but want to try something
a little different this year should opt for Mauritius. Because they have
opposite seasons, Mauritius offers a lovely hot climate while the
Caribbean is experiencing their hurricane season, so this is a great
alternative.
Weather remains deliciously warm all year round though, with their
hottest months being between January and April where temperatures
tend to sit in the low thirties. May to August is a little cooler with
temperatures averaging around 25 degrees which can be a lot nicer
for families with children.
14
Discover marine life
Located in the Indian Ocean, Mauritius is home to an array of marine
life. As well as many different species of tropical fish, Mauritius is
known for its sea turtles that nest on the island between November
and March. You’ll have the opportunity to go on a sea turtle spotting
trip where you can witness the sea turtles being fed, and you can even
choose to go swimming with them.
Great value for money
Believe it or not, Mauritius is great value for money. It’s cheaper than
visiting somewhere like the Caribbean and it’s just as, if not more
luxurious. When you choose one of the all-inclusive resorts, you’ll be
spoilt for choice when it comes to food, drink and activities which often
makes it much better value for money than a family trip to Europe!
Your overseas wedding…for free
If you are considering tying the knot abroad, you can find excellent
value for money when planning your wedding in Mauritius. A lot of the
hotels will offer a free wedding package on the basis that a certain
number of guests will be staying at the hotel.
Not only will you save pennies on the wedding without compromising
on a dream location, but you’ll already be in the perfect romantic
Love Wrexham_Issue 2 August 2019.indd 14 24/07/2019 14:39

setting for your honeymoon, too. The staff do a fantastic job at making
you feel extra special, and the beachfront honeymoon suites on offer
at the resorts will make you feel like you’re on your very own paradise
island.
even be able to visit some of the sugarcane fields from which the
drink is distilled.
Deliciously exotic food and drink
Mauritian cuisine is a delicious fusion of Chinese, Indian and European
so if you like spices and a variety of flavours, you’ll certainly enjoy
trying everything Mauritius has to offer. If you aren’t a fan of this style
of cuisine, you don’t have to worry. Many of the resorts in Mauritius
offer an endless choice of dining options from a variety of countries.
French cuisine has also become increasingly popular on the island
over the years.
In addition, you’ll be able to try some authentic Mauritian rum during
your stay and learn a bit more about the history of the drink. You will
Friendly locals
Mauritius is a paradise island, but what makes it that little bit nicer is
that the locals are incredibly friendly and welcoming. You can expect
exceptional service within the resorts and if you’re out exploring the
island, you won’t be short of friendly advice.
It is an incredibly laid-back island, with a rich and diverse culture. The
locals are more than happy to speak to tourists, suggest things to do
and even show you around. There are so many different festivals held
throughout the year and these are a great way to immerse yourself
in the rainbow of Mauritian culture, including Festival Creole, Divali,
Chinese New Year and Cavadee.
Gardening
A Space of Your Own
Top tips for creating a beautiful space on a budget - by Allan Longshadow, Wordworx
Here’s how one Wrexham resident transformed a garden for next to nothing
BEFORE
AFTER
Repurpose and recycle
Old wardrobes, planks, bed frames and
more – almost any wooden household
furniture can be repurposed into planters,
box ends and borders with little more
than a lick of paint. Plastic water bottles
make excellent starter pots for seeds too!
A lick of paint
It’s amazing what can be achieved with
patience and a lick of paint. There are
outdoor paints that are suitable for tiles -
opening up a whole range of possibilities.
Barking mad
Chipped bark is a great material for
finishing off flower beds and planters and
helping them look even more
developed and it is extremely cheap to
buy!
Find it on Facebook
People are always clearing their gardens,
and more and more are using Facebook
to sell off unwanted items. Check with
local groups for plants, planters and
garden furniture at a fraction of the usual
price. You never know, you might find a
bargain on your doorstep.
Flower power
Flowers are a great way to bring any part
of the garden to life. Check out the offers
from local nurseries at the Queen’s
Square street market on a Monday – you’ll
be surprised at how far your money goes.
Aggregates
Aggregates such as slate, spar or flint
can transform areas of garden into
something special. They are particularly
useful if you have limited topsoil or
foundations that prevent you from
planting into the ground.
Left: White spar;
Right: Plum slate
Wrexham Street Market
Top tip – reduced price plants
If you go to any garden shop, you’ll
inevitably find a handful of plants that are
clearly past their prime and have been
reduced in price. In most cases,
generous watering and some TLC can
restore them back to health in days.
Natural flint
Water features
Creating a water feature can be a great
way to add life to a garden and with a
little creativity, all you need is some pond
liner and a pump. Dig your own pond and
use what you’ve excavated to landscape
the surroundings.
Wrexhamites
Evrah Rose: Poet Extraordinaire
Wrexham poet Evrah Rose hopes to change the image of her hometown.
As our cover story
this month, we are lucky
enough to feature Evrah
Rose. She is, in her Facebook
followers’ words, ‘an
exquisite spoken-word artist
and incredibly relatable’,
‘a truly wonderful Welsh
wordsmith’ and ‘powerful,
thought-provoking and
beautiful’. We found out a
little more about her.
Hi, Evrah. Where’ve you just
come from and what were you
doing there?
I’ve been at Ty Pawb meeting a young
girl who’s really into writing poetry, but
doesn’t know where to go with it. Her
writing is so powerful and mature –
she’s only 17, but she could be really
good. I’m hoping to take her to a
Voicebox event and to Testify Poetry
in Chester at Hanky Panky Pancakes.
I’m hoping that seeing me up there will
inspire her.
How do you approach a live
performance?
Well, it’s me who usually decides what
to do. I figure out beforehand what the
audience and venue are going to be like
and take it from there. When I do a set,
I want it to have the maximum impact
and to raise awareness of an issue, be
it rape or mental illness. If you’ve got
the privilege of speaking in public, you
should use it for good.
I get messages from people saying
my writing’s helped them come to
terms with something or talk about it
themselves. I just think… ‘job done’!
18
How do you decide whether to
add a musical score to your
work or leave just your voice to
convey the message?
It’s just instinct. I have a thought in
my head and it comes with music or it
doesn’t. I decided not to add anything
to the one I did on Wrexham because
that piece was a retaliation. I was going
to do a film of me walking around the
centre, but I’d seen something negative
about the town online and I just
thought right, that’s it, I’ve had enough.
I did it with no gimmicks, just me, in
my pyjamas (laughs). With God Is A
Woman, I thought it needed something
extra to push it forward and make it
more approachable and not so filled
with angst.
‘Who We Are’ is an epic (she
laughs). With those strings
at the end, it’s more than a
poem, it’s an opus and it has
examples of all those amazing
women…
I wanted to write a piece dedicated to
women and when I heard this track by
We Are All Astronauts, I thought ‘I have
to write something for this’ and as soon
as I put it to the music, I was like:
‘yeah!’; it just fitted perfectly.
For the video, I had these ideas of
women defying stereotypes going about
their everyday life: I had women in the
gym, at work, protesting. I wanted it to
be something visual as well as audio
and I think I accomplished that.
Love Wrexham_Issue 2 August 2019.indd 18 24/07/2019 14:39

I’ve had so many people come up to
me and mention other women that I
should’ve put in the poem…
Yeah, but come on, you
namecheck so many!
Robin Williams left his
mum out of his Oscar
speech and she was
sitting in the front row!
Who you were talking
about in the section after
the instrumental break?
‘It was the first time she’d been
called beautiful, not for her skin, but
for her mind? Is that what you mean?
Yeah, that was it. Was that
quite personal?
Yeah, it’s quite personal to be honest
I thought it was. You don’t
mention the person’s name
which is why I was curious
[Long pause] Do I divulge this? No, I’ll
keep it as a mystery.
You’ve done a poem about
the 2019 Grand Slam and you
mention your experiences of
playing football as a child in
one of your poems so I take it
you’re a big sports fan?
I love sport! I watch football for the
sake of watching it! If there’s a game
on, be it (Manchester) United, Man
City or Tottenham, I’ll watch it just
because I love the game. I’m a United
supporter…
Oh, come on, don’t tell us that.
Do you not support Wrexham?
I do follow Wrexham, but I’m a United
supporter because when I was a kid, I
must’ve been about two or three years
old, I had this obsession with Ryan
Giggs. I knew about Ryan Giggs before
I really knew what football was, I think.
My parents bought me loads of Man
United stuff and that’s where it began
with me. It wasn’t because they won
trophies, it was just… Ryan Giggs.
Was he on your bedroom wall,
then?
He was, yeah! Along with Peter
Schmeichel and David Beckham.
And what about rugby? I
suppose in the Six Nations you
were a big Wales fan?
Yeah, my mum’s a big rugby fan so
it’s always on and to be asked to do
a poem for the Grand Slam was just
amazing. BBC Wales got in touch and
said: ‘we’ve got this deadline and you
have to do it within a week. If we win
the Grand Slam, we’ll show this poem
on the telly. I was, like, OK, I’ll have to
write it quickly so it’s all a bit of a blur
to be honest.
I haven’t performed it anywhere yet; I
just did it for Scrum V and they put
it on the end of that. Seeing
myself on TV, I was like ‘well,
this is weird!’
How old were you when
you finished your first
piece of work?
It started when I was about
eight or nine years old. It was
therapeutic because I was
going through a lot as a child
and I just couldn’t express
myself so writing about it helped
immensely.
Have you seen Eight Mile when
Eminem’s character is killing
time by rapping in the line at
the takeaway food van by the
factory? Did you do something
similar in the school dinner
queue?
No! I was always writing about
something like in the back of a
schoolbook, but I always kept it hidden.
I think the first substantial thing I wrote
was when I was about 13. I remember
finding an old notebook and it struck
me how mature my writing was. I think
because of the experiences I went
through, I’d matured a lot and I was
quite old before my time.
It was one of the most poignant pieces
19
Love Wrexham_Issue 2 August 2019.indd 19 24/07/2019 14:39

I’ll ever write, but I’ll never ever release
it. It’s that private… it was one of
those things that helped me get closure
on something rather than putting it out
publicly.
When did you make your
first public appearance? Not
counting in front of your dad
or gran!
I’ve never performed in front of my
family! It was at Voicebox when a mate
of mine had posted something on the
internet and they asked him to bring
me along. That was about two years
ago. I was shaking! I’d never performed
in front of an audience before; it had
only ever been a few select people.
Only two years ago? I thought you’d
been performing for ages!
No, no. it’s only two years. I did
something called ‘Mirrors’, a piece
called ‘My Nurse’ and a rap at the
end. I got a standing ovation! It was
amazing! I was, like, I’m not crap!
People actually like it, I’ll do that again!
I just kept going to Voicebox and more
opportunities and gigs came my way.
The BBC got in touch and asked me if I
wanted to do some stuff for BBC Sesh.
I was, like, ‘yeah, I’ll do that! That’s
dead good!’ That was two years ago
this month.
Are you from around here?
Yes, I’m from Wrexham… we’re all
from Queen’s Park, Caia Park. I grew
up in Spring Lodge on Hullah Lane. My
parents ran the social club that was
next to the Queensway Stadium for a
bit.
My nan and grandad live by the
Queensway and I also lived in Kingsley
Circle. I had some great experiences
and my family’s still based there so
that area is dear to me. People talk a
20
lot of garbage about that area,
but there’s a real sense of
community that I haven’t found
elsewhere.
I did a piece about coming
from a council estate and I got
so much abuse for it! Things
like I was from a ‘Clampett’
community, taking too much
coke, I was a skank... I was
like, my God! On the flip side,
however, the positivity I’ve had
Love Wrexham_Issue 2 August 2019.indd 20 24/07/2019 14:39

from other people saying they grew up on
council estates and that’s exactly how they feel
about it and that they’re proud of their roots. It’s
had tons of shares and four million hits… it’s
done really well.
There’s always something looking to have a go:
if it’s not about the way I look, it’s about my
community.
OK, so we’re up to half an hour
already! I just wanted to end by saying
that anyone who can rhyme ‘Cleopatra’
with ‘stature’ gets my vote
(she laughs) Thank you very much. I’m very
proud of that one.
Pets
For species who live in packs, it´s important
to be able to communicate with their own
kind: in order to cooperate when they hunt,
to bring up their offspring and perhaps
most importantly, to live in peace with each
other. Conflicts are dangerous – they cause
physical injuries and this weakens the group
members, something that no pack can afford
as it can lead to its ultimate destruction.
It’s all about feeling safe
Calming signals – the doggy dictionary handout
by Karen Boyce, Beastly Thoughts Professional Dog Services
Allow the dogs to use their language in
meeting situations so that they feel safe.
Sometimes they will walk up to each other
and get along, other times they feel that it´s
safer to stay at a distance after all, they have
already read each other´s signals: they do so
even at a several hundred metres’ distance –
there’s no need to meet face to face.
Common easy-to-spot calming
signals:
• Yawning
• Lip licking
• Turning away
• Play Bow
• Sniffing the ground
• Walking slowly
• Freezing
• Sitting down and lifting one paw
• Walking in a curve towards
another dog
Local history
Trams and Wrexham - A short history
This is the first in what we hope will be a regular feature by Graham Lloyd, founder
of wrexham-history.com. He has very kindly provided us with the article and photographs.
The muffled roar of the internal combustion engine dominates the roads in and around
Wrexham these days, but at one time the rattle of trams was heard above all else.
1900s Tram travelling over
Felin Puleston Bridge
This is the story of how Wrexham and District
Electric Tramways operated an electric
tramway service in Wrexham between 1903
and 1927:
Beginnings
In October 1876, a single line operated
between New Inn, Johnstown and the toll
bar on the outskirts of Wrexham. On 1st
November of that year, the toll bar was
removed and the line was extended to
the town centre. Wrexham and District
Electric Tramways, a company set up by
the British Electric Traction group, acquired
the line and its operating company in 1900.
They converted the line to 3’6” gauge and
electrified it. The work was carried out by
Dick, Kerr & Co and, following an inspection
28
by Lt Col Sir Horatio Arthur Yorke from the
Board of Trade, services started on 4th April,
1903.
A new depot was provided at Johnstown
at the corner of Offa Street and Maelor
Road, constructed by Jenkins & Jones
of Johnstown of Ruabon brick. The depot
survived long after the closure of the
tramway, one subsequent use being a bus
garage for the Crosville Company. It was
finally demolished sometime between 2005
and 2010.
Electricity at 550V was obtained from the
Wrexham Corporation power station in
Willow Road. A 21-year agreement was put
in place at the opening of the tramway for
the rates at which the company would be
charged for its use of power. Drivers were
encouraged to operate economic driving
practices to minimise the expense to the
company. When this agreement expired, the
company was forced into an annual contract
with the prospect of yearly increases in the
unit charge.
Expansion
The service was extended on 26th May,
1903 past Wrexham GWR railway station to
the Turf Hotel. From Johnstown, the line was
taken into the new development at the west
of the Wrexham-Ruabon road reaching Duke
Street, Rhosllannerchrugog by the end of
1904. Two routes were planned, but only one
was ever opened, a second route designed
to run along Yorke Street was never installed.
Love Wrexham_Issue 2 August 2019.indd 28 24/07/2019 14:40

In 1912, the company started experimenting
with bus operation and soon realised that
this was where most of the profits were
going to be made. In recognition of this in
1914, the company changed its name to
Wrexham and District Transport Company
Limited. Any plans for the expansion of the
bus services, however, were put on hold
with the outbreak of the First World War in
the same year and the motorbuses that the
company had acquired were requisitioned by
the armed forces.
After the war, the company suffered from
competition as the military authorities
disposed of much surplus equipment,
including motorbuses and Wrexham Council
issued hackney licences freely to anyone
requesting them.
Fleet
The company used 10 tramcars built by
Brush Electrical Engineering Company of
Loughborough. The livery was red and
cream. The vehicles could seat 26 on the
upper deck, and 20 inside on the lower deck.
Closure
The system was finally closed on 31st
March, 1927.
Two Trams Remain
In 2005, Wrexham Museum acquired two
of the town’s original electric trams which
had come into use in 1903 to replace the
horse-drawn ones. Vic Cleveley discovered
the tram bodies at the Brow Golf Club in
Ellesmere, Shropshire. The owner, Alf
Strange, had bought them in 1970 with a
view to restoring them himself, but no work
had been carried out and one of the trams
was in a very bad state while the other
seems to have been used as a shed for the
golf clubs groundsmen. Vic alerted Wrexham
Museum to the poor state of the vehicles and
it was agreed for them to be handed over to
the museum for restoration.
From the original 10 trams, housed at the
WETC depot in Johnstown, these are the only
two known to have survived. The museum
plans were to strip the poorer one for parts
to make one complete carriage for display.
To date, no work has been carried out to
restore either of the trams and they still sit
out in the open at Bersham Colliery.
Outdoors
This month’s walk is a 7.5 mile (12.2 km)
hike around the beautiful Minera Quarry.
To get there, take the A483 and exit
at junction four onto the A525
towards Ruthin. Follow the road
through Coedpoeth and turn left onto
the B5426 (signposted Minera/
World’s End) as you leave the
village. Take the right turn directly
opposite Minera Aided Primary
School, continue past St Mary’s
Church. Take the first left onto Maesy-Ffynnon
Road and follow it until
you come to the reserve car park (SJ
258 519).
You will encounter exposed
moorland, uneven ground and steep
slopes. Watch out for bikes around
Llandegla Forest!
This is a walk of diverse habitats and
landscapes, including flower-rich
limestone grassland and panoramic
views from Esclusham Mountain.
34
Enter the reserve, walking past the
kilns on your left and through the
hazel, birch and willow. Carry on past
the footbridge and the Aber Sychnant
(Welsh for dry river).
Continue along the
track through the gate
and enjoy the summer
orchid displays.
Keep walking on the
track towards the
cliffs at the back of
the quarry, passing a
stone cairn and
heading towards the
limestone gorge. The
path passes a big boulder and wet
area and starts to climb. Notice the
quaking-grass beside the path,
which loops round the back of the
quarry. This sheltered grassland is
full of wildflowers, butterflies and
colourful five-spot burnet moths.
Follow the path back down, passing
the cairn again to rejoin the main
track.
At the two large boulders, turn left
and leave the quarry, following the
wide track through the woods. Notice
the wild garlic and coppiced hazel
mixed with ash and willow. Stay on
this track, climbing uphill underneath
Love Wrexham_Issue 2 August 2019.indd 34 24/07/2019 14:40

some power lines. When you reach
the thickly hedged lane, carry on
until a finger-post directs you left into
a field. Walk uphill through the field,
to the right of the trees and bracken
area. From the top, head to the
bottom right-hand corner, where a
stile (before the buildings) leads onto
the lane.
Turn left and continue for one mile,
following signs to Llandegla Forest
Visitor Centre. To the left of the
visitor centre, follow the walking trail
signs to the Black Grouse Trail
(purple). Follow the trail as far as
the power lines and take the lefthand
path through the pine forest.
Walk along this track for ¾ mile until
you see a wooden post on the left
(with ‘9 km’ on the back) and several
other marker posts opposite. Turn
left here. On reaching the black
grouse sculptures, climb over the
stile onto open moorland. This
forest edge is prime habitat for
seeing black grouse, but you’ll have
to be lucky!
When the path forks, take the lefthand
route. Notice the mix of typical
upland moorland plants: bell
heather, ling, cross-leaved heath,
gorse, bilberry and tormentil. Watch
for stonechats perched on top of
gorse bushes. At the stone wall,
follow the waymarker along the wall
to Tŷ Hir Farm.
At the farm, turn right along the track
(the footpath largely follows the
fence line on the left). Look out for
red kite and swifts. Follow the
waymarkers over a stile, through a
field with a dip and stream to another
wooden stile. Once over the stile,
head towards the track which
ascends the next hill between two
pylons. In the grassland, notice
harebells and listen for linnet and
goldfinch. The wet area contains
meadowsweet and forget-me-nots.
The path winds
through willow,
mountain ash and
hawthorn. Cross the
plank over the stream
and continue along
the narrow path, over
another footbridge, a
stone stile and a
wooden stile through
the wall. The next field
slopes steeply uphill
and there is a leaning
way marker post at the top. Follow
the arrow on the post along the fence
until you hit the track. Turn right onto
the track, passing a tin-roofed stone
ruin on your left. Continue along the
gravel track.
Cross the tarmac road and take the
grassy track up Esclusham
Mountain, turning right to reach the
trig point and its panoramic views
over Wales and England. Retrace
your steps to the tarmac road and
turn right.
Continue along the road, ignoring
the first footpath sign and walking
beneath the pylons. Take the next
footpath on the left. As you walk
downwards, enjoy views of the
church opposite and, in autumn, the
rich colours of leaves and berries.
Pass two large hawthorns and turn
left over the wooden stile through the
wall. Turn sharp left and immediately
right downhill through the path in the
bracken. Once in the woods, turn left
when you hit the track (following the
yellow arrow) and follow the path
downwards, through a meadow with
orchids, black knapweed, red
campion and birdsong. Exit by a big
wooden gate and turn left, walking
straight along the dismantled railway,
past the house and to the car park.
Keeping you motoring
Suzuki Swift Sport 1.4 Boosterjet
by Tony Yates
The Supermini market has been
growing at an astonishing rate for the
last few years – and rightly so. The
reason for this climb is that buyers
are now looking for the smaller cars
because they are not only cheaper
to run but in many cases cheaper to
buy. You may not know this, but the
Suzuki brand sells very well - and the
previous Swift models flew out of the
doors because it was seen as one of
the hottest things to own – and the
new Swift Sport is a cracking little hot
hatch and also something that
I consider to be a pretty good truth
be told.
36
Power and Efficiency:
The Swift I had on test was powered by a four-cylinder
Boosterjet turbocharged 140PS petrol engine with
230Nm of torque at 2500 - 3500rpm. 0 to 62 mph is
dealt with in 8.1 seconds – moving onto a top speed
of around 130 mph.
The official fuel economy figures from Suzuki are;
50.5 mpg (combined) with a CO2 rating of 125 g/
km - although the best I could get was around 45mpg,
but then I was not really trying to get near what Suzuki
had said was possible as we have to remember the
variables here when testing a car in the real world.
On the road:
Like all Swift models – they handle like a go-cart and I
can feel where Suzuki has made some major changes
over the older Swift Sport model because everything
feels so much more planted - which all helps in giving
Love Wrexham_Issue 2 August 2019.indd 36 24/07/2019 14:40

you a lot of confidence into the corners – as well as
giving you a great ride on uneven surfaces. Even on
the motorway, all was good, and the road noise at high
speed was very minimal.
Design & Technology
The interior is made out of decent materials and the
fabric used on the seating is of a good quality and a
surprising find for a car in this price bracket.
Space – rear legroom is OK, and the boot is a fair size
in comparison to the competition. What I do like is the
driving position which is good, plus all the pedals feel
in the right place and all the dials and switches are
easily accessible. For those who want to know – the
max luggage capacity for the Swift Sport is coming in
around 265litres (raised rear seating) and 579litres
with the rear seating lowered.
Some of the standard features on the Suzuki Swift
Sport include; ABS, EBD & ESP, lane departure
warning, immobiliser, security alarm, driver & front
passenger airbags, curtain airbags, side airbags, tyre
pressure monitoring system, adaptive cruise control,
keyless entry, engine auto stop/start, automatic
air conditioning, LED rear lamps, LED projector
headlamps, LED daytime running lamps, rear & side
upper spoilers, 17” alloy wheels, 4.2inch colour
LCD display, dual exhaust pipes, DAB digital radio,
smartphone linkage, navigation system and lots more
which is surprising when you look at the price tag.
To sum up:
Suzuki has done a fantastic job of giving the new Swift
Sport an upgrade worth talking about. I believe it will
once again be flying out the doors of a dealer near you.
Price: from £17,999
Groundwork North Wales
Summer Fun 2019 – Hwyl yr haf 2019
Minera Lead Mines and Venue in the Park at Alyn Waters Country
Park have lots of exciting activities taking place for all the family
this summer! After the fantastic success of the school holiday
activities at Minera Lead Mines in 2018 and at the start of 2019,
Groundwork North Wales are expanding the activities to Venue in
the Park at Alyn Waters Country Park.
Minera Lead Mines and Alyn Waters Country Park offer a fantastic
opportunity for the whole family to get outside in the natural
environment. At Minera, you have 53 acres of grassland, wooded
areas and archaeological sites to explore, including the restored
beam engine house, winding engine and boiler houses.
Minera Lead Mines is not alone in sharing an interesting past. The
site at Alyn Waters sits on top of a pile of sand, gravel and clay
dumped by the melting glaciers at the end of the last ice age
13,000 years ago. It was not only sand, gravel and clay dumped
by the glacier, however: In 1966, part of a woolly mammoth’s huge
tusk was unearthed (the tusk is now in the Liverpool Museum).
Now the site is a rich variety of grassland flowers, including
thousands of common spotted Orchids and plentiful numbers of
Pyramid and Bee Orchids.
Venue in the Park at Alyn Waters Country Park can be found behind
Caffi Cyfle. Contracted by Wrexham County Borough Council,
Groundwork North Wales now operate the event space Venue in the
Park and Caffi Cyfle at Alyn Waters Country Park.
Caffi Cyfle is a place where delicious, seasonal and wholesome
food is created that everyone can enjoy as well as providing
inclusive opportunities for the wider community to participate in
work and volunteering programmes. Our emphasis is on using
fresh, sustainably sourced local ingredients and supporting Welsh
suppliers. A new menu has been launched featuring panini, a new
Club sandwich, hot and cold drinks, fantastic cakes locally produced
and much more. The menu is available yn Gymraeg.
This summer, Minera Lead Mines and Venue in the Park, at Alyn
Waters Country Park will be hosting an exciting programme of
activities for all ages and abilities. The sessions are great funfilled
events. We have interactive Slime Time, Bushcraft skills,
Graffiti, Gold Panning, Natural Crafts, model building and much
much more planned all run by the Education and Play Team
from Groundwork North Wales (booking essential on some of the
activities). With more events planned at both locations through the
autumn and winter, please visit www.groundworknorthwales.org.uk,
Facebook @GwkNorthWales and @VisitMinera or email info@
groundworknorthwales.org.uk to find out more and to keep up to
date with all the details.
Project Manager Lisa Jones is excited to be expanding the activities
to Venue in the Park at Alyn Waters: “We are excited to be
expanding our offering of school holiday activity sessions to Venue
in the Park for this year’s summer holidays. The activities allow
families a chance to take part in a range of activities encouraging
them to get outside and enjoy the outdoors”.
Minera Lead Mines visitor centre and toilet facilities are open at the
weekend 10am to 4pm and daily throughout the summer holidays.
Minera Lead Mines is dog-friendly with plenty of parking.
