3.0 Things to do before a house move

You know when you're getting ready to move, and you think, "This is nothing.
I can get it done in two weekends."? Well, you should really stop thinking that
way because one thing's for sure: Moving pretty much always takes longer
than you think it's going to take. So, be smart and plan ahead. There's lots of
packing and organizing you can get out of the way two months in advance of
your move. Click through the following pages to find out what should be on
your to-do list.
Get Estimates from Movers
Unless several of your friends look like Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, you're
probably going to need to hire professional movers to do the heavy lifting. But
if you put off lining up movers, you might not have time to conduct research
and get the best deal. So, go ahead and get that out of the way at least two
months in advance. Ask your friends and relatives if they recommend any
movers, call the movers in your area, compare prices and then line one up for
your moving day. Besides a decent price, you should be looking for a reputable
company that is licensed with your state's Department of Transportation
(DOT) and, if you're moving out of state, licensed for interstate transport. You
also want a moving company (and its workers) that are bonded and insured. If
you want to be super thorough, you can even check up on the company by
contacting your local Better Business Bureau.
Select a Mover and Review the Details of the Move

Once you've selected your mover, make sure you understand what the final
agreement is before signing a contract. Does the business charge by the hour,
by the item or by overall weight? Will the moving company be doing any
packing for you? Will you have movers move only the large items or every
item? Is there a special charge for large awkward items like a piano or a pool
table? Are the employees handling your move bonded and insured? Is the
quote you received non-binding or binding? A binding estimate should
guarantee that the price would not change. If it's non-binding, should you be
worried about any surprise charges? For example, say you're moving from a
house in the suburbs to a high-rise apartment in the city. Will you be charged
an extra delivery fee because the movers have to take the elevator up to the
24th floor? And, if there's no place to park the moving truck near the high-rise,
will you incur a shuttle fee?
Collect Boxes
You'll want to start packing up your nonessential items, so you need boxes.
You can buy boxes from a retailer. But you can also find other ways to score
free boxes. Have any of your friends or relatives moved recently? They may
have some boxes they'd like to get off their hands. Or you may be able to pick
up boxes from a business -- and don't just hit the standard grocery stores and
ABC stores, think outside the box. For example, if you live in a college town,
check out apartment complexes that are located near campus, they may have a
recycled box network so that you can pick up gently used boxes from someone
who has just moved to the area. Or, go online -- you might be able to find
boxes via Craigslist or Freecycle.
Begin Packing Little-used Items
You may think it's silly to start packing two months in advance, but if you're
like most people, there's plenty of stuff you don't use on a regular basis that
can be packed up in a box. For example, if it's summer, start packing your
winter items -- winter clothes, heavy blankets, holiday gear. Or you can pack
by the room -- and perhaps the guest room is a good place to start, since it's
used the least. You decide. Remember to pack small items in the big boxes and
large items in the small boxes. It seems counterintuitive, but it will prevent
box breakage.
Go Through Your Stuff and Identify Unwanted Items

Moving is the perfect excuse to get rid of unwanted junk that's collected in
your house over the years. The rule of thumb is: If you haven't used it in about
a year and it doesn't have any sentimental value, get rid of it. It can be hard to
let things go, though, so you may need to go through each closet or storage
space twice. On the first run, you'll remove the obvious unwanted things, and
on the second run you'll remove the items you're a little more attached to.
Have a Yard Sale
Now that you've set aside your unwanted things, it's time to figure out what to
do with them. Since you're doing this two months in advance of your move,
you've got time to plan a yard sale. Yard sales are generally on Saturdays, and
you'll need to advertise to get a good turnout. So, put up fliers where it seems
logical - your workplace, your church, your community center, the local
library and, of course, don't forget to put up signs around your neighborhood.
There are even Web sites where you can advertise your sale. If you're looking
to make money, check eBay before you price your items to make sure you're
not essentially giving stuff away. Of course, that is an excellent option; you can
do just that.
Donate Items to Charity
If you don't want to hawk your unwanted items from your front yard, give
them to charity. There are a million ways to give your things away. Anything
from cars to appliances to clothes and shoes can be donated to a charitable
organization. Start by going online to see what nonprofits have locations in
your area and find out what their needs are. Choose a charity that needs the
types of things you'd like to give, and then just give. Many nonprofits even set
up receptacles on the side of the road to accept your donations. It's easy!
Notify Correspondents of Your Move
Even in our busy world of e-mails, texts and tweets it's nice to find a letter or
card in our mailbox now and then. So, it would be really sad if you don't
receive all those lovely holiday and birthday cards because your friends and
relatives don't know what your new address is. Let people know that you're
moving and what your new address will be. It can be as easy as sending out a
mass e-mail with all the pertinent information. Or, you can order a pack of
moving announcements and put that holiday mailing list to good use. If you're

moving to another town, you might even get a going-away party out of the
deal.
Plan Menus to Use up Food in the Cupboards.
As you start looking through your cupboards, you might notice you've
collected some nonperishable food that you'd rather not pack up and move to
the new place. So, sit down and put together some menus to use up that food
before you move. It might actually be fun to think of creative ways to use
mushroom soup, canned pineapples and spaghetti in one meal. And if the
move has you too busy to manage this type of culinary cleanse, pack
everything up for the local shelter or a food drive. Or, invite some neighbors
over for a pantry-clearing party and send them home with the goods.
Arrange Air Travel for Family, if Necessary
If you're moving to a faraway place and you're not driving, then you'll
obviously need to buy plane tickets for yourself and your family. It'd be great
if you could get this out of the way well before the two-month mark, so you
can watch ticket prices and strategize a good ticket deal. But when you're
transferred due to work or you've accepted a new job offer, you don't always
have that much notice. If possible, buy your tickets at least two months in
advance of your move. And don't forget the family pets -- arranging their
travel can take even more preparation.
come in handy. Ideally, every box will be clearly marked with the room in
which it belongs. (If not, it should be marked with some sort of explanation of
its contents.) Save yourself the trouble of having to sort through everything
twice and bring each box into the correct room directly from the car. This way,
your unpacking can get off to an organized start.

Clean before anything else
In real estate parlance, properties need to be “broom clean” before a new
buyer or tenant moves in. Essentially, this phrase means free from any visible
dirt. However, as any person who’s completed a move recently knows, there’s
rarely time in the midst of it all to make sure that your whole home has gotten
a deep clean.
With that in mind, you’re going to want to do some cleaning of your own
before you start to unpack after a move. We suggest keeping a selection of
cleaning essentials – things like paper towels, all-purpose cleaners, and a
broom – accessible as you unload your car or truck. That way, it can be one of
the first things that you unpack.
Unpack rooms by importance
When it’s finally time to unpack, you’ll want to do so in an orderly fashion. We
recommend unpacking room-by-room, in order of importance. This means
unpacking the whole room at one time, rather than just grabbing the
essentials and leaving the rest for later. Yes, it’s a bigger task upfront, but

you’re less likely to have boxes of non-essential items laying around long after
you’ve settled in.
In terms of the order in which you unpack, you’ll want to start with your
bedrooms first. After the move, you’ll likely be exhausted and want to head to
bed fairly early. This way, your bed will be waiting for you. Next, you should
tackle the kitchen, followed by your main living space.
After that, you can move on to lesser-used spaces like your dining room, guest
bedroom, and formal living area. Last but not least, you can tackle any
supplemental storage areas like a basement or garage.
Declutter once more
In unpacking, there’s one golden rule to follow: Everything has its place. This
means that for each item you take out of the box, you should have a rough idea
of where you want to put it in your new home. And you should put it in its
place immediately. Any items that you’re unsure about should go back in the
box.
After you’ve been in your home for a while – let’s say two weeks, to be safe –
it’s time to take a long, hard look at any items that you still have left in boxes.

Ask yourself: Do you really need these items? Do they truly have a place in
your new home? Have you missed using them on a daily basis?
If the answer to the majority of these questions is no, think about either
donating the items or throwing them away. Now is the time to declutter even
further. There’s no sense in having half-empty moving boxes laying around
forever. Nor is there sense in storing items that you likely won’t use again.
Your best bet is to give them to someone who can use them.
6.0 To Do List After Moving Into Your New
Home
Reviewing a checklist of things to do when moving into our new home will
make the enormous task of moving so much easier. Nobody really likes the act
of moving. It can be nerve wracking, exhausting and overwhelming, with so
much to do in one day. However, by breaking down the steps of moving into
10 simple tasks, you can streamline the process for yourself.
Now, before moving, you've undoubtedly reviewed the home inspection
report and other types of inspection reports. Either the seller has fixed certain
things for you or you will need to, at some point, make sure everything is
working to your satisfaction. But today is not the day to overhaul the HVAC.
Further, during the final walkthrough with your agent, you undoubtedly
checked for plumbing leaks, reviewed where your water shut-off valve is
located, and you are confident you can find and open the electrical panel. But
the one thing you might want to review prior to moving in is the condition of
your flooring. For example, if you plan to replace carpeting with hardwood,
plan for this before the moving truck pulls up. It is much easier to replace
flooring before you move into the house.
Top 10 Things to Do Before Moving Into a House
Do not plan major remodels or undertake tearing out walls until you have
lived in the house for a while. I cannot believe the things so many buyers say
they will do and never get around to. Buyers might talk about the horrid paint

color in a room and years later, that wall is not painted. Or they might say:
first thing I'm gonna do is tear out those kitchen cabinets, but 10 years later,
the cabinets are still intact.
Work through the process one step at a time. And remember, your first day of
moving in will most likely be the most stressful. After that, things will tend to
fall into place.
1. Turn on Utilities. If you haven't already notified the utility companies to
transfer gas, water, electrical, trash and sewer into your name, you need to
call. In some localities, county utilities might be transferred by the escrow
company, but it's a good idea to inquire about this at closing. The time to find
out you have no electricity is not when the sun goes down.
2. Sequester Pets. Moving your pets into a new home can be a terrifying
experience for some pets. The surroundings are unfamiliar. Maybe scary.
Bring blankets, food dishes, litter boxes, toys and treats in a separate box for
your pets. Then place those items, with your pets, in a separate room. Away
from the noise, commotion hustle and bustle. Help them feel safe and reduce
the chance they will bolt out the front door.
3. Change the Locks. You have no idea how many strangers could have keys
to your new home. Call a locksmith pronto and get those locks changed. If
your door is missing a deadbolt, a locksmith can install that, too. Most mobile
locksmiths charge around $100 to make a home visit, plus extra for the keys.
This is a good time to change all the locks to work with a single key. Bonus tip:
Come up with a plan to prevent getting locked out of the house.
4. Plug in Refrigerator. Make sure all of the appliances are plugged in and
working. Many people while moving out unplug a refrigerator and turn it off.
If you haven't gone grocery shopping yet, you would not even know the
refrigerator was not working unless you check. Check the ice dispenser is
working as well. And who knows, sometimes sellers leave a surprise bottle of
bubbly in the 'frig for buyers.
5. Change Mailing Address. Finding local businesses after you move is about
as hard as asking, "Hey, Siri, where is the post office?" With Locations turned
on, your cellphone can locate many businesses for you. The U.S.P.S. lets you
change your mailing address online. Even so, they will likely mix up mail for a
while, and not all of it tends to get forwarded. For that reason, change your

mailing address on your last credit card statements or online for all major
credit cards.
6. Set Up Security. For safety conscious people, a home security system is
often a necessity for peace of mind. If your home already has the equipment
installed, it will take next to no time for the security company to activate it.
Some companies install systems that let you set the security alarm when you
are inside the home at night, which is extra comfort for single individuals.
Choose strong security codes, one for you and one for guests.
7. Establish Internet. If your security system uses cameras, they might be
wired to work on WiFi, which means even without a computer, you could
need Internet at your house. Also, the popular digital doorbells use WiFi. So,
do home-based apps that turn on and off the lights, open garage doors and
water your lawn. While the tech person is there to connect you to WiFi, don't
forget to set up the television to stream your favorite shows.
8. Order Food and Drink. Some people pack snacks to take with on the day of
moving. Others want to feed not only themselves but the movers and / or
friends helping them to upload. Nowadays your options are not limited to
pizza and soft drinks. Further, moving day is not a good day to plan to cook.
Get take-out from the Chinese joint down the street or order a case of beer to
be delivered through your favorite food delivery app. Keep plenty of bottled
water on hand.
9. Establish Sleeping Arrangements. Don't wait until midnight to figure out
that all the movers have left and you can't find the screws to set up your bed.
Or you don't have any pillows or bedding. The first piece of furniture to be set
up should always be the beds. Everything else can wait. Most people also pack
an overnight bag that contains all of the essentials you will need upon retiring
and rising, such as toothpaste, brushes, contact lenses and medications.
10. Meet the Neighbors. Hopefully the neighbors will appear bearing
Tupperware meals or plates full of cookies. If you spot them eyeing you
unloading boxes, invite them over. They should know enough to just walk
over and introduce themselves, but some do not. Or, they worry they are
intruding. Make a special effort to remember names. Don't be that guy whom
for years ignores a super nice woman next door because you don't want to
admit you don't know her name.
