Mystery at Touchstones... 

There is a mystery hidden in the archives of Touchstones 

Nelson, one that cannot be solved without the help 

of architecture buffs, longtime Nelson residents and super 

sleuths. 

In the Shawn Lamb 

Archives, there is a 

binder of 198 unlabeled 

photographs of 

Nelson homes, likely 

taken in the early 

1930s. The photographs, 

printed on 

postcards, include no 

information about 

the photographer or 

details about any of 

the houses; not even 

addresses. 

Does this house look familiar? 

Archives summer student Gillian Wiley has been working 

on digitizing and identifying the photos, drawing on 

old notes that accompany the album from an unknown 

contributor, using Google Street View and even spotting 

houses while walking around Nelson. Some have been identified 

but many are still unknown and the collection will be 

a much more valuable resource once identified. Many of 

the houses pictured are ones for which there are no other 

photographs in the archives. Part of the project involves 

uploading the images to Historypin, a website where users 

post an old photo of a building or location over the Google 

Street View image of what it looks like today. With these 

photos, the collections staff can build an image of what the 

streets of Nelson looked like nearly a century ago.

James is sent by his conniving aunts to chop down their 

old fruit tree, he discovers a magic potion that results in a 

tremendous peach – and that launches a journey of enormous 

proportions. Critics have pronounced that James 

and the Giant Peach is a ‘masterpeach!’ 

“Live performance is the ultimate storytelling vehicle,” 

says Fischer. “Sharing a story with a roomful of strangers 

is a uniquely rewarding experience. And in the case of 

James and the Giant Peach, it’s also great, quirky fun for 

the whole family.” 

The long-running Summer Youth Theatre Program at 

the Capitol has provided several generations of youth 

with profound experiences, lifelong memories and a deep

and museums, visit studios and venues not normally 

open, shop for original art or fine crafts and experience

Here are 10 hints for a great Culture Tour, passed on

Start with a full tank of gas as some great spots are off 

the beaten track! 

Take your ‘Backroads of BC’ or other detailed map. The 

CBCT Directory maps are good, but sometimes a bigger 

picture will be helpful. 

Be prepared to get a little lost, or at least think you 

are. One-way streets and cul-de-sacs can be hard to find 

sometimes but don’t give up; that out of the way location 

might be a treasure! I have a friend who calls this being an 

‘adventure kitty’. 

Bring a friend or family member or two as there will be 

lots of activities and events for all ages. Please leave your 

dog at home, as it may not be welcome at some of the venues 

and it is usually hot on this weekend. 

Take your restaurant and hotel coupon book if you have 

one. This is a great chance to visit some new places to eat, 

and who knows? You might want to make this an overnight 

trip! 

Take your cheque book. Some of the studios are not set 

up to take credit or debit cards. ‘Small’ money for small 

purchases will be appreciated. 

If you see something you like, buy it! It may not be there 

if you wait for next time, and many of these locations are 

not open regularly. Don’t be surprised if you save the sales 

taxes. Many home based artisans do not have to collect 

GST and/or PST, so purchasing directly benefits both the 

customer and the vendor. (They aren’t paying commission 

to a commercial outlet either.) 

Wear comfortable walking shoes. You might be doing 

some wandering through gardens and yards to get to 

studios. 

Sunscreen and a hat aren’t bad ideas, either. Even a bottle 

of water or two. Staying hydrated keeps your energy 

up. 

Plan to spend one day, at least! Events start at 10 am and 

run to 5 pm, both Saturday and Sunday, which gives you a 

chance to explore further afield. See you on the tour!

within 55 km of Castlegar that would benefit from using their 

Celgrow soil amendment. Pastures and hay fields are good options. 

Mercer Celgar will cover the costs of a qualified professional performing 

soil sampling, obtaining government authorization and 

delivery costs of Celgrow soil amendment based on access with a 

large truck/pup combination. Acreage should be able to accommodate 

at least 6 truck/pup loads. The two major components of 

Celgrow are individual wood fibres lost from the pulping process 

and surplus bacteria from the wastewater biological treatment 

facility. Wood fibres enhance soil moisture retention and bacteria 

are a good source of soil nutrients. The landowner is responsible 

for spreading and incorporating Celgrow into their soil.

Local teacher, a finalist for 

prestigious award 

Local MLA Michelle Mungall congratulates Grace Broadfoot 

from J.V. Humphries Elementary & Secondary School on 

being named as a finalist in this year’s Premier’s Awards for

Launched for the first time in 2018, the annual Premier’s 

Awards for Excellence in Education are an opportunity to 

recognize the contributions of public, independent and First 

Nations school system teachers, principals, vice-principals, 

school and district leaders and support staff who go above and 

beyond to make life better for K-12 students in BC. This year, 

10 awards are being given out with six honouring teachers, 

two recognizing school and district leaders and two honouring 

support staff members. The nomination period ran from 

January 7 to April 30 and 140 nominations were received. 

The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony at 

Government House in Victoria on October 4, the day before 

World Teachers’ Day. 

Winners will receive a $3,000 personal bursary for professional

West Kootenay chosen for rural 

immigration project 

West Kootenay employers will benefit from a new 

federal pilot aimed at bringing immigrants to smaller 

communities. 

The Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot, announced 

mid–June, named eleven Canadian communities who 

would benefit from increased immigration to address local 

economic development needs. Among those selected was 

the West Kootenay, which includes the communities of 

Nelson, Castlegar, Trail, Rossland and surrounding areas.

project, which kicks off in fall 2019 with the first immigrants 

arriving in 2020. Over a three year period, the pilot 

aims to attract up to 250 immigrants of various skill levels 

to fill full-time, year-round positions. 

“This project is community-driven. We’ll be talking to 

local employers to find out the type of skills shortages 

they’re experiencing and setting the region-specific application 

criteria based on their needs,” explained Andrea 

Wilkey, executive director of Community Futures Central 

Kootenay. “We’ll be looking to attract immigrants for jobs 

that have gone unfilled locally.” 

The Kootenays currently have an unemployment rate 

of 6.3%, which is above the provincial average of 4.5%. 

Yet jobs remain unfilled. Since January, more than 1,000 

vacancies have been advertised on the Kootenay Career 

Development Services job board. Some local businesses 

are operating with an employee shortage because they 

can’t find anyone to fill their open positions. “We embrace 

the announcement of this pilot supporting West Kootenay 

communities. We are determined to see our local 

businesses succeed and this is a major step for all stakeholders,” 

said Doug Sutherland of Sutco Transportation 

Specialists. “As baby boomers leave the transportation 

industry, a gap is being created that our local labour pool 

can not sufficiently fill. For many organizations, filling 

these gaps helps grow and create more opportunities for 

locals looking for other positions. 

“For our team members, we are committed to transporting 

community products to market as well as transporting 

essential product to our communities. This program will 

definitely support these commitments for the long term.” 

In the past, Sutco has hired drivers through the Temporary 

Foreign Worker Program. The Rural Immigration 

pilot helps immigrants gain permanent resident status 

and bring their families, which strengthens their longterm 

commitment to the region. 

Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy (CBAL) provides 

settlement and integration services for newcomers across 

the Kootenay Boundary region. CBAL Executive Director 

Desneiges Profili, said getting the whole community 

involved in this project will help to enhance understanding 

of the immigrant experience and create a more inclusive 

workplace and community. “Immigrants help enrich 

our community culturally, socially and economically,” 

Profili said. “When employers, community members and 

service providers have more knowledge and awareness, 

it helps to ensure that immigrants have the wraparound 

support required to settle successfully within the community. 

This results in strong connections to the community 

and the region.” 

In the fall, Community Futures will hire a coordinator 

to manage the immigration pilot and work with employers 

to identify positions that could be filled by newcomers. 

Then, those employers will be able to hire employees from 

outside of country or those who are within Canada but 

are not yet citizens or permanent residents. Once a prospective 

immigrant has a job offer, they apply for endorsement 

from the community. 

“We’ll have a committee of community stakeholders 

help set our local criteria for endorsing our ‘best fit’ candidates. 

We’ll be looking for people with a genuine employment 

opportunity who intend to stay in the community 

and help grow our local economy,” Wilkey explained.

The endorsed candidates will be 

eligible to apply to Immigration, 

Refugees and Citizenship Canada 

(IRCC) and if they meet the federal 

selection criteria, they will get their 

permanent residence and be able 

to move to the community to start 

their new job.
