One customer owns a 1966 Morgan and Dawson is still searching for the parts he needs to work on it. He said "doggedness" has helped him survive in the changing world of automobile manufacturing and repair. When another customer complained her car wouldn't start, Dawson ran a compression test, checked the spark plugs and noticed moisture on them. Once he managed to start the car, water and oil geysered from the engine. That's when the driver acknowledged pouring water into the car's oil pump thinking it was the radiator. Although a valued service mechanic at a large car dealership can make a lot of money, Lawson's advice to young mechanics who want to open a small shop is to get the right education and buy the right tools. He likes working on all cars but what does Lawson drive? Answer: A 1987 Porsche Turbo 944. "A decent 944 will blow off (Porsche) 911s like there's no tomorrow. It'll do 165," he said.
