BLOOD MONEY
Article by: Yvonne Young
Car Owner: Calvin (Professor) Bell
Featured Model: Ailynn Morales Lindo
1972 Chevy Impala Custom
This photo shoot was done in West Bottoms of Kansas City. It is an Historical
part of downtown Kansas City, there are so many graffiti walls throughout the
Downtown area. These photos were done near the corner of 9th and Mulberry.
Calvin bought this Chevrolet Impala in 2007. He wasn’t intending on purchasing
A different vehicle but was surprised when he came across it. He was driving through
St. Joseph Missouri just checking and looking at the scenery on the sides of the road.
Looking he saw this car sitting next to a barn with a for sale sign in the window.
Calvin said when he saw it sitting there it peaked his interest so he decided to check
the Impala out. He got off the road and went up to the house, the man who answered
the door wasn’t the original owner of the Impala. The original owner was the Grand-
Father of the man who answered the door, who had bought the Impala brand new in
1972. He had gotten sick and passed away and left the car to his son, who decided
to keep the car and fix it up. But the son of the original owner became sick and had
passed away too. So now the grandson was selling it to help pay for his own dads
Funeral. Calvin paid $1,500 for this Impala.
Since ownership of the Impala, Calvin has collectively spent anywhere from
70 to 80 thousand doing different things to the car. Calvin has changed the paint color
of this car five times. Four different shades of brown- goldish brown, dark brown, root
beer brown, sunset mica brown and then finally to the red that it is now. He has
changed the rims out 10 or 11 times, everyone was a different style. The interior has been
changed twice. The top of the Impala has been changed twice as well. The roof was a
hardtop. Then he changed it to a vinyl top then to a cloth top (rag) with a sunroof. Calvin
has licensed this beauty with historic/antique plates. Calvin and his wife enjoying
going to the car shows together. He and his wife plan their summers for the car shows.
She has her own show car, so they show them together. He has been showing the Impala
since 2007 and has won multiple trophies over the years. In his very first car show
he took 1st place at the American Legion in Independence Missouri.
Calvin’s 1972 Chevrolet Impala Custom Coupe is the 8th generation consisting of
Biscayne, Impala and Caprice. His car originally came with a 400 V-8 turbo, rear wheel
Drive with an automatic 3-speed gearbox. Could put out about 170 hp and 325 lbs of
torque. The length of the Impala is 18.3 ft long and about 6.6 ft wide, weighing out at
about 4,178 lbs. The top speed was about 114 miles per hour, 0-60 in about 11.1 sec’s.
Interview with Calvin Bell
1972 Chevrolet Impala Custom
Q: What gratification do you get
showing your car?
A: I enjoy seeing the different looks on
everyone’s face when they walk up to me.
Either it be that they are just excited to see
the car or it’s reminiscing about the times
that they had in a similar car. Telling me
their stories and memories when they had
one or rode in one.
Q: What got you into doing car shows?
A: I’m the youngest of 12. So having so
many siblings and my older brothers always
being into cars and having the big
cars. Cadillacs, Buicks and Chevrolets. I
got interested in them too and now that I
have a son I’m hoping he gets into them as
much as I’m into them.
Q: How many car shows do you do per
year?
A: We do about 10 to 12 car shows a year.
Most of the car shows we do are local, we
don’t like to trailer our cars.
Q: Are there any certain car shows you
go to every year?
A: We go to World of Wheels every year.
That is the #1 car show for all cars. But we
do go to a few other local shows.
Q: Do you have any other hobbies or
other things you enjoy doing?
A: I build cars. I’ve been around and have
been building cars since I was 14 years old.
I’m also a big yard guy. I love making
sure my yard of my house is green and
weed free. Have to make sure my yard
always looks good!
Q: Do you have any other show cars?
8 | EPM Showcars | Issue2
A: Yes we have a 1972 Chevelle, 2012
Chevy Silverado and we also have a Spyder
motorcycle.
Q: If money wasn't an object, which car
would you buy?
A: I would buy a 1970 Chevelle hardtop
and a ZL1 Camaro.
Q: What are you cars original specs?
A: Engine was a 400 small block with
turbo, automatic 3-speed gearbox with
170hp.
Q: What mods have you done?
A: 406 cubic inch small block, after market
high rise cam and lifters, heads are
ported and polished, after market intake
and Carburetor. Suspension: coilovers
in front and air shocks in the back. Front
brakes are slotted with twin piston calipers
stock on back. Yukon sure track posey
rear end with 31 spine Axels 8 1/2 carrier
with 373 gears.
Q: What mods do you want to do to
your Car?
A: Im happy with the look of the Impala
right now. I’m thinking on doing something
performance. Possibly an LS swap,
for more power and reliable motor.
Q: Anything else you'd like to add?
A: Yes, A BIG shout out to my wife
(Nichole David-Bell) for being so understanding
and patient with me when it has
came to my cars. Also to all the talented
shops for the work they did on my car.
The 1972 Chevrolet
Impala is a very
distinct car with its
18 ft long body and it
being 6ft wide. The
cars length and weight
had a lot to do with the
handling of it. Back
in 1972 GM wanted
another car about the
same length as the
Cadillac they were
producing.
This car was introduced
in 1912
as an open touring car
only, 6,000 of these
cars were produced
and sold for $2,150.
The Impala was
known as the Little
back then. It was
designed by a famous
race car driver Louis
Chevrolet.
Impala running on
22” Gold Dayton Wire
Rims with a hint of
Chrome from Twin City
Custom in KC Missouri.
These are the
Classic OG wire rims
that have been around
since 1916.
Calvin decided to
change out all of the
factory trim to chrome
dipped. Chrome headers,
chrome gears,
chrome bumpers,
push guards are gold
dipped.
He also purchased a
$1,500 Tiarra grill. His
Impala has the
gangster windows at
the back quarters of
the car, not very many
Impalas had these
windows.
NICK CRABAUGH
Article by: Yvonne Young
Car Owner Mike and Melissa Crabaugh
Featured Model: Jessica Oyer
2005 Dodge Neon SRT4
This photo shoot was done mostly at the front area of Wyandotte County Lake Park.
This Lake is a beautiful area for photography no matter what the weather is. There are
So many different spots to get the right picture. The second area of the lake where we
Photographed was by the boat house.
Mike and Melissa Crabaugh are the owners of this 2005 Dodge Neon SRT4. They
are both very devoted car enthusiasts. This is not their only car that they take to car
shows. Their son Nicholas Crabaugh was always there for them and with them at all the
car shows that they did. Mike and Melissa decided they wanted to get another car for
the shows and they wanted to go with something completely different than what they
had. A friend of theirs had the Dodge Neon and it had been in a field for 3 years with no
motor in it. They had figured at that point they could pretty much do anything to it that
they wanted to. So they ended up buying it and putting an original 2.4 turbo engine in it
with a 5-speed manual transmission. This was so that they could have another engine
built for the Neon and still be able to do other things that needed to be done to the car.
Their son Nicholas helped them with the Neon during this process. Nicholas had no clue
that they were going to give him the car when it was completed. Unfortunately they lost
their son Nicholas the day before the Neon was completed, in a fatal car accident due to
a distracted driver.
Mike and Melissa didn’t originally have the car wrapped as it is now, it was pretty
much a rebuild for their son with some extras. Since the loss of their son. They have
dedicated the Neon in the form of a memorial to the memory of their son Nicholas Crabaugh.
Nicholas was a very giving and generous young man, always wanting to do
things for others as much as he could. He loved spending time with his niece, just chilling
and hanging out with her spending as much time as he could. He actually was with
her the whole day of his death. He had just turned 22 a month prior to him being taken
from his family. They have been showing the Neon since it’s completion in 2017, about a
year and a half. The Neon has won Best of Show and also Top 100 pick of 2,400 cars in
We Are Mopar at Texas Speedway, plus several other trophies.
bit easier getting through everything,
even though Nick will never be forgotten
he will live on forever in our hearts!
Also shout outs to those who helped
With bringing our vision of the Memorial
Steve Lupercio is the proud owner of this beautiful and sexy 1946 Chevy Fleetline. The
sleek lines this car has will turn every one’s head in just a few seconds. The color pops
with its 2 tone base even catching your eye more, defining the cars name Nek Breaker!
This sexy car is what they called the sub-series model back in 1946. It was the only
year offered to have the additional chrome triple molding on all fenders. They only offered
2-door coupe and 4-door sedan this year as well. The original engine offered for
this year was the straight 6-216.5 c in (3.5)L with a 3-speed manual transmission. The
wheel-base is 116 in wide with a total car length of 16.5 feet. The style of the Chevy
Fleetline production was delayed in 1942 due to World War II. Several thousands of the
coupes and sedans were produced during the war years for Military staff use. Back
in the era of this sleek fleetline they used hood ornaments as a symbol of the car. This
actual hood ornament is named “The Flying Lady Goddess” she represents speed. These
hood ornaments were originally used to replace radiator caps on the cars. Then there is
the V emblem on the front center of the hood, this actually represents that the car has a
V-8 but those who bought and drove the car after WWII believe it stands for VICTORY!
Steve ended up purchasing this car from a friend of his that had been asked if he
wanted to buy the Fleetline. His friend wasn’t interested in the car so he asked Steve if
he wanted it. So Steve went to check the car out and he really liked the look of the car.
He knew that you don’t see to many of these around and it was a very sharp looking car.
He enjoys cruising around at different events, car cruises and of coarse car shows. This
is his way of relaxing and getting out of the house, when he can. He also enjoys the looks
that he gets when he pulls up in the Fleetline, especially when he lays on the horn of
the car. It’s horn sounds like a warning siren, very close and similar to WWII era. Steve
doesn’t do it for long but it sure grabs the attention of all who are around! Steve has
been showing and cruising this car since 2009. This 1946 Chevy Fleetline has was many
Best of Show trophies among many others.
This beautiful custom
hand painted symbol on
the trunk is of an L.A.
Car club called Viejitos
which means Old
Man. This is a Lowrider
car club that has been
around since 1985 in
northern and southern
California. Since then
the car club has expanded
to Oklahoma
and other southern
states plus its working
it’s way all over the U.S.
The custom hand painting
was done by Jacob
Birdsong of Kansas CIty.
The engine shot
definitely shows off the
chrome covers and the
carburetor breather.
This is a 350 small block
(crate engine). It has
anywhere from 145 to
370 horsepower. Rated
up to 380 pound-feet of
torque.
The rims on this 1946
Chevy Fleetline are Dayton
100 spoke wire
wheels. These wheels
are replicas from back in
1942. Steve decided
to ride on 13’s since it is a
lowrider. He also has the
hydraulics on the car to
be able to lift and lower
it. Lowriders came about
back in the mid-to-late
1940’s in Los Angeles
California during the
post war prosperity of
the war. The aim of the
lowriders is to cruise as
slowly as possible, “Low
and Slow” being their
moto.
The custom interior
of this fleetline, maroon
and tan definitely compliments
the car, it was
designed with comfort in
mind and also wanting
to be able to listen and
share your music with
others, with the 12 speakers
throughout the car.
Car Owner: Cara Carter
Featured Model: Kylee Phillips
2010 Dodge Challenger R/T
52 | EPM Showcars | Issue2
Once again we did another beautiful photo shoot at Wyandotte County Lake.
Proving there are many places at this wonderful lake. The day we scheduled
this photo shoot they said there wouldn’t be any storms till the afternoon. Well
Mother Nature stepped up and moved the storms to the morning of the shoot.
The owner of this beautiful Challenger still brought her car out to get the shoot
done, the first time her car had seen rain like this. We feel that we captured
some wonderful shots of her car. Cara’s husband Gill stepping up at all times
needed to wipe the Challenger down and make sure it looked good for his wife
for the shoot. Now that’s what we call teamwork!
Cara acquired this 2010 Dodge Challenger in December of 2010 around
Christmas. Her husband Gill told her that they needed to go to Warrensburg, MO
to see her nephew’s ceremony. So Cara and her husband Gill headed to
Warrensburg in her Chevy Trailblazer. Cara’s husband Gill suggested they stop
by the dealership where his brother is the general manager. As they greeted
her they suggested that she go across the street to the main showroom of the
dealership. As she walked in the door of that showroom there sat a gorgeous
2010 Pearl Black Dodge Challenger R/T (Charlie) with a big blue bow on her hood.
Her husband Gill had bought her the Challenger as a Christmas present. Wow,
what a nice present! She had no clue that he had bought this beautiful car for
her. Cara also added that as far as the name she gave the Challenger (Charlie),
she has no clue where that name came from it just popped in her head when
she saw that car. Cara didn’t really start showing the car till about 2015. Cara
and her husband decided to show it after Gill worked a couple of events and that
got them even more interested in doing car shows. He had seen a lot of the
mods other Challenger owners were doing and he got the fever. As you will see
by the pictures and the list of modifications, you can tell the love they have for
this Challenger (Wickid Charlie). Cara told us that her Challenger has became a
very well known car at the car shows and when she takes it to the dealership for
anything to be done to it maintenance wise. Her family even refers to her car
as Charlie! Cara and Gill have also joined a few car clubs over the years.
They are in the Demon Club and Mid America Mopars.
BLACK ROSE
Article by: Yvonne Young
Car Owner: Efrain Gonzalez (Preacher Joe)
1960 Chevrolet Impala
Imagine the wind flowing through your hair as your riding along in this 1960
Chevrolet Impala in downtown Kansas City, enjoying all of the Historical sites
and any of the many events that go on there. This photo shoot was done near
the corner of Central and James.
Efrain Gonzalez is the proud owner of this fabulous ride. He actually had no
Intentions on purchasing a car at the time he was told about this car. Originally
one of his friends was introduced to the car as it came up for sale but wasn’t
interested in purchasing the Impala. Efrain known as Preacher Joe was told
about the Impala and decided to go check it out. As he arrived at the owners
door there sat the Impala, Joe felt deep in his heart that he needed to buy this
car. When he approached the owner of the Impala too Discuss the sale of the
car. The original owner of the Impala told Joe that he was told he only had four
months to live and he needed to sell it to help pay for his own funeral. Joe spoke
to him and told him he didn’t believe that he was going to die. “Joe’s words” You
know I don’t really like paying for anyone’s funeral! But I’m going to buy your
car and restore it and then come back to you and take you for a cruise in it. So
it ended up the original owner of the Impala never ended up dying. It has been
four years now since he purchased the Impala. Joe returned back to the original
owners home a little over a year after he bought it and like he had promised him.
He took the original owner for a cruise in the Impala. Joe told us that the original
owner had spoken to him and suggested the Joe had done something to him to
stop him from dying. He told the man that he felt that God had a hand in it! Joe
said when he saw the look on the original owners face when he saw the Impala.
He had said he couldn’t believe his eyes! The original owner even asked Joe
if he would sell the Impala back to him, “Joe replied” No, I’m sorry your life is more
valuable then this piece of metal.
Efrain Gonzalez has lived in the Kansas City area for over 22 years. He has
restored 17 or 18 different cars. He has a strong love to restoring the cars and
putting them back on the road for others to enjoy, for the right price! Joe has let
others use his cars in weddings, for sweet 16 parties, graduations and dances.
He enjoys letting others also enjoy the beautiful cars that he restores.
