One of the biggest challenges in leveraging data science to help make complex strategic decisions is to mistakenly assume that an unordered, unpredictable, complex context is in fact an ordered, predicable complicated one. “This assumption, grounded in the Newtonian science that underlies scientific management, encourages simplifications that are useful in ordered circumstances. Circumstances change, however, and as they become more complex, the simplifications can fail. Good leadership is not a one-size-fits-all proposition.” Neither is good data-driven decision making. With operational decisions, we have to learn to distinguish between those situations when decisions can be embedded in automated processes, and those that require human intervention. With strategic decisions we have to learn the difference between complicated but predictable contexts, and complex and intrinsically unpredictable ones. III. Sustainability & Compliance Economic Emancipation and Fundraising Just as Reverend Leon H. Sullivan once embraced the idea of Economic Emancipation for people of color, we must now embrace its logical extension, Economic Emancipation for our Community and Faith-Based organizations, many of which arose out of the very movement embraced by our predecessors, in order to help them more fully fulfill their manifest destinies. During the most recent recession, many of our charitable organizations suffered near-fatal setbacks. Most have yet to fully recover, and, unfortunately, some will not ever recover. But there are important lessons-learned in order to prevent the same thing from happening all over again one day. And as we move forward, we must now help them not only to recover, but learn to thrive as well, even in the aftermath of the devastating losses. We must help these organizations break the dependency on government funding and develop their own ability to operate and raise funds independently, while simultaneously helping them learn to “think outside the box” with regard to their sustainability and survival. This project is designed to do exactly that. It is a natural extension of the Sullivan movement of the prior eras when those individuals who pressed-forward to achieve their own economic emancipation evolved their causes, as well as their communities, into powerful forces, economically, which are right now under attack and in imminent danger of being eradicated right out of existence. - Jack Johnson ______ “The genius of America has been in the nation’s ability to solve our greatest problems: whether it be in the expansion of frontiers, the building of cities, or putting a man on the moon.
