WHAT WE LOVE THIS SEASON
Our Founders’ Top 5 Picks for Summer!
BETH’S PICKS
CAROLINA’S PICKS
My husband surprised my
with this Chloe Femininities
Necklace from his trip to
France. I’ve received so many
compliments so had to share!
I recently started seeing
a nutritionist who
recommended these
Moroccon Your World Picky
Bars and I am obsessed.
These Tibi ankle wrap strap
heels have made my latest
wishlist.
I’ve been feeling a little dull
with with seasonal skin
change, so I’m giving the
Goop Glow a try!
This stunning Cox London
Serpent Table is on my client
pinboard and I can’t wait to
use it on a project. We first
spotted it on an inspiration
trip to the London Design
Festival!
I am a sucker for good heels
and you’ll rarely catch me in
flats. These Chloe ankle strap
sandals are my new favorite!
Aoyama makes a stunningly
fragranced incense. Add this
to your must list, if you love
incense.
If you’re looking for a new
statement necklace, this
Truth Pendant stopped me in
my tracks.
I love a bold entry table and
this new Beacon Console
Table from Interlude Home is
gorgeous!
Dedon makes some to-die-for
solar powered lanterns and
their Lantern L is on my list
for my backyard design.
TREND WATCH
Color Makes a Bold Statement in These 9 Looks
EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED
Summer is for fun, so we’re loving the trend to bright, bold
colors and playful patterns. Colors inspired by the blues of
the seaside are complemented with hot orange and sizzling
pink - let’s dive right in!
1. Water-Inspired Color.
Lee Jofa’s Graffito pattern
is a fun, organic look in a
watery blue.
2. Delish Dimension.
Add personality to a lamp
shade, or pillow with a
funky trim by Schumacher.
3. Orange in Flight.
We’re obsessed with the
color on this juju hat,
called blood orange. It’s
constructed of feathers,
bamboo, and raffia.
4. Modern Geometry.
Our collection of S.Harris
fabrics showcase our
love of color, pattern, and
exotic travel.
5. Summer Topper.
Make a statement this
summer with an Eric
Javits hat in a punchy
color! Featured in InStyle
magazine, May 2019.
6. Cooking with Color.
The Missoni Family
Cookbook adds the
company’s signature color
to any kitchen, plus it has
delicious recipes!
7. Mixing Up in Metal.
Pulp is a huge fan of these
copper enamel plates!
Carolina and Beth purchase
these on trips as souvenirs.
These are from Carolina’s
collection she started in
high school. A great accent
for any coffee table.
8. Color Kaleidoscope.
Make a splash with a
modern tile that has a
retro feel - Art Deco with a
Memphis Style inspiration
from Walker Zanger.
9. Haute Whimsy.
This gorgeous Hamptons
home designed by Kelly
I love Playa Del Carmen. It’s a great place
APRHOCHIC’S JEANINE HAYES AND
BRYAN MASON: MOROCCO
Our absolute favorite escape is Morocco.
For a designer, it’s a place where you are
constantly inspired!
“After the death of my mother, my little family
and I needed a change of scenery - a new start in
a new home.”
“This house had been in my husband’s family for
years. It was originally built by his grandparents
and was where his mother grew up.”
DENISE MCGAHA: ST. JOHN BVI
We love the BVIs and have been going there
since before our children were born. It is
honestly one of the only places I truly relax.
BETH DOTOLO: DESERT HOT SPRINGS
Two Bunch Palms has been a favorite
summer spot for me. You never get out of
the springs and there are far fewer people.
KARA COX: HILTON HEAD ISLAND
My family vacationed there every summer
when I was growing up and we are
continuing the trend with our kids
“There’s something about a fresh coat of paint
that really helps you claim your home. It gives it
such fresh look and shifts the energy… yes, I’m
west coast now and I’ve gone full ‘Woo’.”
“Where Beth wants everything done NOW
(nightmare client- ha!), I am one to wait until the
right items show themselves and I design my home
over time (also, our nightmare client- ha!).”
LAKESIDE
LIVING
A Contemporary Home High Up in the Trees
There are just some clients and homes that
you “get” right away. It’s a perfect fit of style,
location, and design goals. As a designer,
when a project like this comes your way, you
know you’re going to make magic together!
Two busy professionals put an amazing team
of top architects and builders in place to build their
dream home but they needed the finishing touches to
match their investment. They were referred to Pulp
Design Studios when their friends, who were former
happy Pulp clients, shared their design success
stories.
Pulp immediately went to work to create
a warm furnishings package to complement the
contemporary architecture and finishes. With an
ease in the design and presentation process and
zero revisions to the initial designs presented, the
result was a stunning home fit for entertaining and
relaxing.
WHAT PULP SAID
“We love designing homes near
water. Lake and ocean-side homes
automatically have a more relaxed
feeling - it gives a sense of peace
and makes the home even more of
an oasis for our clients!”
Beth Dotolo
WHAT PULP SAID
“We always want to show personality in
the interiors we design by using unique
pieces. One-of-a-kind or small-batch
objects help us achieve that!”
ART
AS
INSPIRATION
How to Make the Most of Art in Your Interiors
We love it when our clients have their own
collections of art. It’s the best way to
inject their personality into a space and
it’s so inspiring for us as designers.
When a busy Dallas family asked Pulp Design
Studios to create lively and livable spaces, we curated
their collection of art, and then added in new items to
fill in and complete the unique look.
Using that Eclectically Elegant project, here are
our top ideas for working with art in your home!
ABOVE: Art can
inspire the palette for
your room. Use it as
the focal point for a
pulled-together look.
FAR LEFT: Who says
you can’t use art in
the kitchen? We love
how it looks in this
breakfast area!
LEFT: A painting in
the entry gives your
guests an artistic
welcome. We love to
curate art for our
clients, to make their
home truly unique.
ABOVE: Using paintings, sculpture, and items picked up on their
travels, we gave our clients a collected look in this eclectic study.
TOP RIGHT: We curate and purchase art for our clients, which gives
their interiors a one-of-a-kind look. We loved these organic wall art
pieces we found at Carneal Simmons Contemporary Art in Dallas.
They were handmade by the late artist Gregory Miller.
RIGHT: The scale of art is important, and that’s usually where you can
go wrong in your own home. Look for pieces that aren’t too large (they’ll
overwhelm the room) or too small (they’ll get lost in the interior space)!
27
BEFORE AND AFTER
How the Pulp Process Works
There is a very specific process
that we follow for any project,
no matter how big, or how
small! So when our client came
to us for help with his plain box-like
condo in a fabulous high-rise, we kicked
into action to give him the sophisticated
space he wanted.
Take a tour of what we
accomplished, from beginning to end
and see how we bring that special Pulp
Design Studios sauce to what we do!
PHASE ONE
INITIAL CONSULTATION + INTAKE
This is where we meet with the client and talk through
what they want and need. It’s an intensive meeting
because we want to know who they are, what their
style is, how they live in the space, and what they
really need. This client wanted spaces to entertain in -
that was his top priority!
PHASE TWO
THE DESIGN PHASE
The most creative phase of the project! This is when
we begin to create a vision for the space. We take all
of the information we’ve gathered from our client and
select everything from fabrics to finishes. Phase Two
ends with one of our favorite moments in the process
- the design presentation! That’s exciting for us and for
our clients. It’s when they really start to see the space
come to life. Be sure to compare our mood board and
living room presentation with the finished room on the
next page!
Playful Modern Project
Interior Design: PULP DESIGN STUDIOS
Photographer: AARON LEITZ
Location: SEATTLE
BUDGET + FLOORPLANS
At this part of the design phase,
we also discuss the budget for our
services and for the furnishings.
We go over the floorplan and talk
about how the home needs to flow
for the clients and for their family
members. That information helps
us deliver a home that’s gorgeous
and that works for their lifestyle.
PULP ICON / ISSUE TWO
PULP ICON / ISSUE TWO

28 29
PHASE THREE
EXECUTION + INSTALLATION
The execution portion is when we start having custom
items made, we begin to order other furnishings, and
we start to source unique items that will give the
rooms personality. Finally, it’s time for the big reveal!
We love this part - and our clients are always blown
away. Our condo client couldn’t believe how we
separated each space to give him individual areas for
entertaining. And he said he never thought his space
could look “so amazing!”
Follow the photos to see how each space went from
boxy-boring to beautiful!
THOSE
SUMMER
WHITES
The Hottest Look of the Season!
Chalky finishes are making a splash this
summer, featured on everything from
furniture to lighting.
Here are just a few of our favorites from
this white-hot trend.
ROOM IN THE SPOTLIGHT
Ahhhh - it’s the season for serious
relaxation. But you never want to
sacrifice chic style for comfort.
We design bedrooms that are both
luxurious and welcoming. Here’s how!
Summer Is for Relaxation - in Luxury
1.
WHAT YOU NEED
1. Be bold - try a fabulous wallpaper on the ceiling!
2. Use luxe fabrics, an upholstered headboard and
mounds of pillows to sink into
3. Create a cool neutral oasis, but add color details.
DESIGN TIPS
How to Choose the Right Tile
ASK PULP
anything!
“Almost-teenage boys’
bedrooms can be so
challenging! Any tips for
designing a transitional look?”
@nicodamus
via Instagram
MIX IT UP
Using two tile sizes in this bathroom adds
a lot of visual interest and dimension.
BE COMPLEMENTARY
Black bathrooms are in - and we chose
the Ann Sacks tile to complement the
dramatic color, not compete with it.
ADD COLOR
Bold and colorful tiles around a fireplace
make a unique and gorgeous statement.
One of our favorite shows is the annual
Kitchen & Bath Industry Show
where we get to see an early preview
of stunning new tiles!
Need more ideas and tips?
pulpdesignstudios.com
DRAMA IN SMALL SPACES
Pattern can give you just as much punch
as a bright color - we love the shape of
these chevron tiles.
A preteen wants to
be grown up, but still
needs space for toys
he can’t quite give up.
Hidden storage is key,
like the ottoman and
baskets here. But be
sure to give him some
grown-up “cool” items,
too, like the light-up
arrow! Banish the
babyish colors and
patterns, and go with
bright and bold looks.
