House in Adelaide
By: Mark Williams
(University of Adelaide)
Abstract
No matter how draining the moving process can be, the new home is always
exciting. There is something great about going to a new place and making it
yours all over. While it can be bitter sweet, moving lets you keep redefining
aspects of your life.
The minute you walk in to your new home, your mind will be racing with todos.
Keep this overwhelming task list at bay by keeping a notebook in a
central location and write down every action item you or your family thinks of
throughout the day. Here you will know about the step by step process of
moving from your old house to new house.

1.0 Introduction
No doubt, there is more than one way to move. Depending on the size of your
home, the distance of the move, your budget, and the amount of time you have
to get yourself situated, you might choose to rent a truck and move yourself,
hire a mover to do the job, or use a “you pack, we drive” service.
Here are the step by step tips for making your next move easier. And some
basic task to do when you move to your new house.
2.0 Things to Do Before You Move
You've just signed the paperwork on a new home (congrats!). But soon the
excitement of getting settled at your new place will wear off, and the panic of
packing up boxes will set it. We've rounded up expert-approved tips to keep
you sane and totally prepared during the move.
1. Manage packing smartly.

"For my recent move, I gave myself a daily box quota to prevent a draining
weekend of non-stop packing," says Amy Azzarito, design writer and author of
Past & Present. Avoid boxing up your old place in one fell swoop, if you have
the time. Remember, you'lll need some energy left to unpack, too.
2. Skip the cardboard boxes.
Target Home Style expert and blogger Emily Henderson used California-based
company rentagreenbox.com for her most recent move. "A week before I
moved, they dropped off sturdy boxes with attachable lids and came back to
collect them once I unpacked," she says. "No cardboard boxes, taping, or
bubble wrap. Plus, its eco-friendly and can be cheaper than buying pricy
moving boxes." If you're not in Los Angeles, companies with similar business
models are popping up around the country and are just a Google search away.
3. Don't pack your closet.
"If you use professional movers, ask them to bring several wardrobe boxes on
the day of the move," suggests Emily Schuman, author of the blog Cupcakes
and Cashmere. "The movers take clothing right on the hangers and, woosh,

your clothes will be in and out." Bonus: You can skip a full day of ironing once
you're settled.
4. Switch your utilities.
This one may seem like a no-brainer, but Brendon DeSimone, author of Next
Generation Real Estate, says the timing is key: "As soon as you have a closing
date, call the utility companies and set up a service switch." This is especially
important if you're moving into a home that is newly built or previously
vacant: Arranging a maintenance call to reestablish service might be
necessary.
5. Make saying goodbye easier.
Moving from a home with sentimental value (your kids' growth-mark notches
in the doorframe!) can be gut wrenching. To ease the pain, Azzarito suggests
creating a Pinterest board with things you're excited to do in the new home,
like dream decorating or new things to do in that part of town. If you have
young kids, personal organizing guru Barbara Reich suggests taking a video of
each child talking about their favorite part of the house to preserve the
memories.
6. Haul the basics before the moving truck comes.

If your new place is within driving distance of your current home, plan to take
basic supplies over the day before, says Reich. "Unpacking the bathrooms in
advance and having pajamas and clothes for the next two days set aside will
bring some normalcy to the chaos of the boxes," she says.
7. Visualize life in your new home.
"Confession: I've been known to hang pictures while the movers have been
unrolling rugs," says interior designer Nate Berkus. While Berkus attributes
his hyper-organization to his Virgo star sign, we think he has a pretty good
point: "The sooner you get unpacked and organized, the sooner it feels like
home." If you move at a slower pace than Nate, plan out spots for your
favoriate pieces of art and décor in advance. You'll feel more accomplished
and settled if you do.
8. Meet your neighbors the fun way.
Sure, baked goods and a friendly hello will do the trick, but if you're going to
be painting the interior walls, Henderson has a fun party idea: "It's called a

graffiti party and guests are given paint samples or markers to scribble games
and notes on the wall." Don't be shy about hosting a gig sans furniture; this
relaxed party theme is built around pizza and folding chairs.
9. Discover the local resources.
Take a walk around your new neighborhood and be sure to introduce yourself
to people you pass by. DeSimone says this is the best way to get a
recommendation for a handy man, neighborhood favorite babysitter and get
to know the lay of the land. If your life was an ABC Sunday night drama, these
meet-and-greets would be peppered with salacious gossip on the
community's comings and goings (ha!).
3.0 How To Pack When Moving House
Knowing how to pack for a move into a new house is not in everyone’s DNA.
Most people end up pulling a last-minute magic show even though they’ve
started packing on time (or, they thought they did). With Bayut’s checklist,
you will find the whole packing process swift and stress-free. So, here are ten
tips on how to pack for a move as if you’ve got Martha Stewart in your family
tree.
1. DECLUTTER, DECLUTTER, DECLUTTER

Do you really need to bring that strange diet cookbook with a giant chocolate
cake on the cover that you’re never going to use? We suggest placing it on the
side, alongside everything else you’ll never need.
2. FIND YOUR INNER E-COMMERCE SALESMAN/SANTA
Sell as many clothes, books and other unwanted items by hosting a yard sale
or using an e-commerce website. Or else, give them to charity or friends. If
you’re leaving Dubai and you don’t want to throw away your extensive spice
collection, give it to a colleague.
3. KEEP IT GREEN. SERIOUSLY…
When you’re decluttering and throwing away old paper and other recyclable
items, do make sure to do it in an environmentally friendly (green) way! Many

communities in Dubai have their own recycling spot – find out where is the
nearest one to you.
4. GET MOVING ON THOSE MOVING SUPPLIES
Moving boxes, bubble wrap etc. can all be ordered online on Ace hardware
store, or theboxme.com. But, if you ask around at the shops in your
neighbourhood, you might procure a few boxes without having to pay AED 10
a pop.
5. PAINTINGS & SCULPTURES FIRST
Trust us, you do not want to risk moving a piece of art just before the moving
truck parks outside… The same goes for mirrors, silverware, sports trophies,
and everything else under the label FRAGILE.

6. ONE ROOM AT A TIME SO THINGS DON’T INTERTWINE
Yes, it’s a cheesy rhyme, but do pack up your apartment or villa one room at a
time to avoid chaos. Save the kitchen and the bedroom for last, unless you
particularly like sleeping on the floor or foraging boxes for food and cutlery.
7. GOOD OLD-FASHIONED LABELLING
Even if it’s a small box containing a bedside lamp, labelling this side of it with
‘BEDISDE LAMP – FRAGILE’ will take but 5 seconds, yet make all the
difference.

Use a different marker or packing tape for each of the rooms. If you label the
kitchen with, say, a black marker and the living room with red, you’ll be able
to move the boxes to the right room of your new place of residence without
having to read a single label.
8. PREPARE A MOVING DAY KIT
People in general – especially families – rarely manage to unpack in a single
day. So, do remember to prepare a separate bag containing your bathroom kit,
change of clothes and cleaning supplies, AKA the moving day kit.
9. HAVING A HARD TIME? CALL A MOVING COMPANY

If you’re finding it hard and your budget allows you, ring up one of the
following moving companies: e-movers, Mexico movers, Santa Fe Relocation,
Easy Truck, Desert Movers or Pickfords.
Note: Don’t worry, while there are a few unreliable moving companies in
Dubai, these were all recommended to us by a broker from a leading agency
who’s dealt with pretty much all of them at one point or another throughout
his thirteen-year career.
10. TREAT YOUR MOVERS
Even if you’ve hired a moving company, having a jug of cold lemonade ready
for everyone to freshen up is the only right way to start your life in the new
villa or apartment.
And that concludes our 10-point checklist on how to how to pack for a move
into a new house. For those who want to fully master the art of packing, we’ve
included a few extra tips below! Because you can move into a new house as
efficiently as Martha Stewart.

BONUS TIPS:
Notify your new neighbours about the date and time of your big move into a
new house in advance. That way, they’ll be able to avoid any potential noise or
clutter, and you can start off the neighbourly relationship on the right foot.
Book the delivery of any new furniture you’re getting for the day AFTER the
move. Otherwise, you’ll risk having too many people helping you move in at
the same time; not to mention a massive amount of furniture to deal with at
once.
If you are using a moving company, make an inventory sheet of all the boxes
you have. That way you’ll immediately know if the movers have misplaced
something.
If you put all the living room boxes in the moving truck first, followed by the
kitchen, bedroom, and so forth, you can be taking them out in the same
orderly fashion too.
4.0 Tips to Make Moving Stress Free
Moving house is as stressful as it gets. All the sorting and logistics to do, not to
mention moving an entire house of “stuff” to another, less familiar house.
Moving everything and everyone, children and pets included could be a recipe
for disaster and stress overload if not organised properly.
The last thing you want to happen on moving day is to be faced with an empty,
unfamiliar house, and piles upon piles of boxes which you have no idea what’s
in them.
It would be easy to get daunted and run for cover – and I don’t blame you as
after all, you just want to feel settled as soon as you can – but there are ways
to stop this happening and create a much easier and enjoyable first day in
your new home…

The basics of moving easily is to ensure that you have a good idea at all times
where things are. You want to be able to move into your home and make it
work for you right from the start, and as such you will need a plan of attack.
Here are my top tips to help make move-in day a day to remember, for all the
right reasons – and it all starts before you get there!
THINGS TO DO BEFORE MOVING DAY
TIP #1 – DECLUTTER
It sounds like the last thing you would want to do before you move house, but
actually a good declutter can be a great thing at this time.
If you declutter every part of your home (and I’m talking about the loft, the
garage, and the shed in this as well as the rooms inside the main house), then
you get to grips with what you have.
You can see what you are going to be moving into your new home, and really
decide if you need it at all any longer.
All too often we get blind to the things we have around us – so having a new
beginning like a move tends to help us focus on what’s got to go.
If you need any further encouragement to do this, then financially it will really
help you during a very expensive time. After all – you are paying a removals
company to move everything you have (and possibly pack it as well) – so why
pay to move things that you don’t really need…
TIP #2 – PLAN WHAT WILL GO WHERE
After a good declutter you should have a great idea of what’s in your home
and what you will need to move into the new home.
A great tip here is to sit with a plan of your old house and a plan of your new
house (a quick sketch of the floor plans is just fine!), and firstly write down
what you have in your current house:-

When you have this list of items for your old house – start to transfer each
category to the new house, and see what you end up with in each room.
It may well be that you are moving to a house with similar rooms, and if thats
the case then this will be really simple – but often what happens here is that
you start to see any potential issues before you’ve actually moved the stuff
around.
For example – you may be moving to a larger kitchen with dining space in it –
and so are planning to use the dining room as a home office. However, looking
at the plan, you have LOADS of dining room stuff and it won’t fit in the space
you have thought you would house it.
Seeing where things will go will help you to start the move in your head, and
solidify (or change) plans as you start to visualise things much more clearly.
TIP – This is a great idea to do for larger items of furniture, where you want to
know exactly where to put them when they arrive – as otherwise you will
spend a lot of time and effort and stress trying to move everything around
after the removals company has left.
TIP #3 – COLOUR CODE THE PLAN
This is the fun bit!
From Tip #2 you will have created a rough plan of where you want things to
be moved to on move-in day if possible. Now you need to make that a reality.
I find that colour coding can really help to do this quickly and easily.
I use sticky dots on my floor plan of the new house and colour code each room
a different colour.
Then I go round the house and colour code the items I want to move into each
of the rooms.

TIP – Either colour code the actual item if someone else (the removals) are
packing for you – or if you are packing yourself then you can colour code the
packaging only.
TIP – Give the removals company a copy of your colour coded floor plan of the
new house so that they can easily see what you want in which room. This will
save so much time as you don’t have to stand by the front door telling them
where to put each item as they bring them in – you can be getting on with
other things.
TIP – You could also stick a coloured piece of paper on the door of each room
in the new house to make it even easier to move things in
TIP – Large items of furniture can be tagged in the same way, making it less
likely that items will be moved into the wrong room – leaving you (hopefully)
with less to move by yourself.
TIP – Colour code both the side and the top of each box so that when they are
stacked you are able to see what room they are for easily.
TIP #4 – TAKE LABELLING ONE STEP FURTHER
By this I mean that it’s all very well and good having a pile of boxes in each
room that now belong there, but how do you find the things you need straight
away vs. those that can wait if you don’t have time to unpack everything
immediately?
The trick is to pack an “essentials” box(es) for each room and label it with a
star or something so that it’s clearly visible. This means that you know that
opening just those boxes will ensure you have what you need first open and
ready to go.
THINGS TO DO ON MOVING DAY
TIP #5 – KEEP THE ESSENTIALS AND IMPORTANT STUFF WITH YOU

On moving day itself, you don’t want to run the risk of not being able to get
your hands on what you need when you need it.
You may be delayed actually moving in, and trying to find sleeping items and
toiletries etc… in the dark in an unfamiliar house is the last thing you will
want to be faced with.
As such, try and pack your own car with all your essential items – things like:-
Paperwork
Valuables
Bedding and a blow up bed!
Kitchen essentials box with tea bags, coffee, milk, cups, biscuits, bottle of
wine and corkscrew – and the kettle of course! – at least you can make a
drink as soon as you need one!
Kids essentials box – kids want to feel at home in a strange home as
quickly as they can – so get them to pack their favourite toys, teddy, a
blanket, nightie/pj’s etc… so that they can settle in and at least sleep in
their familiar things if you don’t unpack everything on day 1.
Pets essentials box – pets will feel very confused at this time, and so the
quicker you can familiarise them with the house, the better – pack
things like food, water bowl, snacks, bed, favourite toys etc….
Clothes – a change of clothes for everyone for the following day so you
can get going!
Toiletries for everyone
As soon as you arrive at the new house, you can at least have all the basics to
hand – and out of the way in the car until you need them. If the removals are
delayed/break down etc… then it won’t be a complete disaster as you can
camp out together with bedding and essentials – it could be an adventure!
TIP #6 – PRIORITISE

Now you have got all the boxes in the right rooms in the new house – it’s time
to work out what you should do first.
This is where overwhelm can still set in if you’re not careful.
Prioritising can really help with this as you want to be sure that you don’t
spend 3 hours on day one unpacking all the best china. You are better off
spending time on what matters, and what can get you and the rest of the
family up and running as quickly as you can.
My list of what I would do first would be something like this:-
Furniture is roughly in the right place (this means I can have somewhere to
put my stuff when I start to open boxes)
Curtains are up in bedrooms
Essentials boxes are unpacked from the car (see Tip #5)
Essentials boxes for each room are unpacked (see Tip #4)
Start to open the rest of the boxes, starting with the most used rooms first
(kitchen, bathroom, utility, bedrooms, living areas, storage areas)
At least then you are more likely to be able to function as quickly as you can,
and are less likely to run out of time for the important stuff. You could work as
far down the list as you can and then leave for another day.
TIP #7 – USE MOMENTUM
Although leaving boxes for another day is very tempting when you have done
so much already on move-in day, the trick is to keep going with unpacking
while you have the energy and momentum from the move itself.
Leaving boxes for too long means they are likely to become invisible to you
after a while, and you may find that you still have them there after months!

TIP – the only exception with leaving items in boxes is if you are planning to
redecorate straight away – leaving the less used items packed safely away in
that room makes sense.
moving house tips and tricks to make the move easier. If you are moving
house then follow these tips to create an easier moveIf you are moving house
in the near future, then I hope that some of these tips and tricks will help you
to make move-in day a day to remember, for all the right reasons!
The trick is to plan as much as you possibly can – so that you simply have to
follow the plan when the time comes.
This can save so much stress, time and energy on move-in day – and will
enable you to get started on living life in your new home that bit faster.
‣ Tips to Feel Organised While Moving
Nothing can be more challenging than moving into a new house. There are so
many things to do before the final moving day. From arranging moving truck
to packing household items, decluttering house to lifting heavy boxes, you
have to take care of everything for a smooth execution.
Since the key to a successful move is a management, make sure you
coordinate every step carefully. Without the good organisation skills, you
could be lost in the mind of your moving process. The better way to organise
things is to hire a professional and affordable Adelaide Removalists that can
give you a zero damage guarantee with 100 % customer satisfaction.
Besides professional assistance, make sure you stick with the right moving
plan you created for the smooth and effective process. You can also consider
the following 6 tips if you want to stay organised during your house move.
These tips will help you create trouble-free relocation strategy while letting
you make the right decision at the right time.
Let’s get started!

1. Moving timeline is imperative
Creating a comprehensive moving timeline is one of the best ways to keep an
entire moving day organised. Whether you are relocating locally or interstate,
a moving timeline can always organise your exhausting tasks while letting you
monitor the progress closely.
So, before jumping into a complicated relocation process, take some time out
of your busy schedule and create a to-do-list of tasks that need to be taken
place prior to your move. You can further prioritise it depending on your
specific needs and set timeframes for each task.
This is how you will get better clarity about what you need and how to achieve
it within a given timeframe. All you need to do is to stay focused and get the
most out of your customised timeline.
2. Chuck Out Unwanted Items
Yes, you have to do this. Once you are done with the list of items you are not
going to take to your new place, make sure you get rid of them. There is no use
of keeping unwanted items as it messes up space and create unnecessary
chaos during the packing and moving tasks.
So, it is better to chuck them out 2 to 3 days before your moving day. If the
condition of the items is good, you can sell them online or donate to a charity
in Adelaide. Make sure you create a list of all the items you are taking along
with you to your new house – this will keep things organised.
3. Floor Planning of a new house
The excitement of shifting to a new home is something that always keeps you
enthusiastic, especially when you are relocating for the first time. It is always
a special time for you and your family, as you have planned a lot of new things
in your new house like how the furniture will be accustomed, where your
Plasma TV will be placed, etc.

But before moving your furniture and other household items, don’t forget to
create a floor planning of your new house. This will give you a better idea of
how to acquaint the new surrounding with old furniture.
In simple terms, a floor plan of a new house allows you to get familiar with its
layout so that you can organise your moving items quickly and easily.
For example, a detailed floor plan will help you identify whether your
furniture will fit in the elevator or get through the door or not.
relevant names. For example, if you have packed all fragile items in a box,
5.0 Things to Do After Moving Into Your New Home
Reviewing a checklist of things to do when moving into our new home will
make the enormous task of moving so much easier. Nobody really likes the act
of moving. It can be nerve wracking, exhausting and overwhelming, with so
much to do in one day. However, by breaking down the steps of moving into
10 simple tasks, you can streamline the process for yourself.
Now, before moving, you've undoubtedly reviewed the home inspection
report and other types of inspection reports. Either the seller has fixed certain

things for you or you will need to, at some point, make sure everything is
working to your satisfaction. But today is not the day to overhaul the HVAC.
Further, during the final walkthrough with your agent, you undoubtedly
checked for plumbing leaks, reviewed where your water shut-off valve is
located, and you are confident you can find and open the electrical panel. But
the one thing you might want to review prior to moving in is the condition of
your flooring. For example, if you plan to replace carpeting with hardwood,
plan for this before the moving truck pulls up. It is much easier to replace
flooring before you move into the house.
Top 10 Things to Do Before Moving Into a House
Do not plan major remodels or undertake tearing out walls until you have
lived in the house for a while. I cannot believe the things so many buyers say
they will do and never get around to. Buyers might talk about the horrid paint
color in a room and years later, that wall is not painted. Or they might say:
first thing I'm gonna do is tear out those kitchen cabinets, but 10 years later,
the cabinets are still intact.
Work through the process one step at a time. And remember, your first day of
moving in will most likely be the most stressful. After that, things will tend to
fall into place.
1. Turn on Utilities. If you haven't already notified the utility companies to
transfer gas, water, electrical, trash and sewer into your name, you need to
call. In some localities, county utilities might be transferred by the escrow
company, but it's a good idea to inquire about this at closing. The time to find
out you have no electricity is not when the sun goes down.
2. Sequester Pets. Moving your pets into a new home can be a terrifying
experience for some pets. The surroundings are unfamiliar. Maybe scary.

Bring blankets, food dishes, litter boxes, toys and treats in a separate box for
your pets. Then place those items, with your pets, in a separate room. Away
from the noise, commotion hustle and bustle. Help them feel safe and reduce
the chance they will bolt out the front door.
3. Change the Locks. You have no idea how many strangers could have keys
to your new home. Call a locksmith pronto and get those locks changed. If
your door is missing a deadbolt, a locksmith can install that, too. Most mobile
locksmiths charge around $100 to make a home visit, plus extra for the keys.
This is a good time to change all the locks to work with a single key. Bonus tip:
Come up with a plan to prevent getting locked out of the house.
4. Plug in Refrigerator. Make sure all of the appliances are plugged in and
working. Many people while moving out unplug a refrigerator and turn it off.
If you haven't gone grocery shopping yet, you would not even know the
refrigerator was not working unless you check. Check the ice dispenser is
working as well. And who knows, sometimes sellers leave a surprise bottle of
bubbly in the 'frig for buyers.
5. Change Mailing Address. Finding local businesses after you move is about
as hard as asking, "Hey, Siri, where is the post office?" With Locations turned
on, your cellphone can locate many businesses for you. Even so, they will
likely mix up mail for a while, and not all of it tends to get forwarded. For that
reason, change your mailing address on your last credit card statements or
online for all major credit cards.
6. Set Up Security. For safety conscious people, a home security system is
often a necessity for peace of mind. If your home already has the equipment
installed, it will take next to no time for the security company to activate it.
Some companies install systems that let you set the security alarm when you

are inside the home at night, which is extra comfort for single individuals.
Choose strong security codes, one for you and one for guests.
7. Establish Internet. If your security system uses cameras, they might be
wired to work on WiFi, which means even without a computer, you could
need Internet at your house. Also, the popular digital doorbells use WiFi. So,
do home-based apps that turn on and off the lights, open garage doors and
water your lawn. While the tech person is there to connect you to WiFi, don't
forget to set up the television to stream your favorite shows.
8. Order Food and Drink. Some people pack snacks to take with on the day of
moving. Others want to feed not only themselves but the movers and / or
friends helping them to upload. Nowadays your options are not limited to
pizza and soft drinks. Further, moving day is not a good day to plan to cook.
Get take-out from the Chinese joint down the street or order a case of beer to
be delivered through your favorite food delivery app. Keep plenty of bottled
water on hand.
9. Establish Sleeping Arrangements. Don't wait until midnight to figure out
that all the movers have left and you can't find the screws to set up your bed.
Or you don't have any pillows or bedding. The first piece of furniture to be set
up should always be the beds. Everything else can wait. Most people also pack
an overnight bag that contains all of the essentials you will need upon retiring
and rising, such as toothpaste, brushes, contact lenses and medications.
10. Meet the Neighbors. Hopefully the neighbors will appear bearing
Tupperware meals or plates full of cookies. If you spot them eyeing you
unloading boxes, invite them over. They should know enough to just walk
over and introduce themselves, but some do not. Or, they worry they are
intruding. Make a special effort to remember names. Don't be that guy whom

for years ignores a super nice woman next door because you don't want to
admit you don't know her name.
Conclusion
Moving a house is always a daunting process. But when you plan early and
create moving timelines and work according to your checklist, you will reach
the desired goals without any hassle. So, the next time when you move, try to
keep things organised as much as possible. And apply these tips when you
move to your new house.
