Political drama unfolds in Goa
as 10 of 15 Congress MLAs break
away from party to join BJP
With 10 MLAs changing sides, the strength of Congress in the House would be reduced to five.
Rebel Congress MLAs, accompanied by Goa chief minister pramod Sawant, submitting letter to Speaker.
Panaji: Winds of political instability in
neighbouring Karnataka reached Goa
on Wednesday, with two-thirds (10 out
of 15) of the Congress MLAs breaking
away to merge with the ruling BJP.
The group, led by Leader of
Opposition Chandrakant Kavlekar,
met Assembly Speaker Rajesh
Patnekar in the evening and gave him
a letter, informing him about their
breaking away from the party. The
MLAs include Atanasio Monserratte,
Jeniffer Monserratte, Francis Silveira,
Philip Nery Rodrigues, Cleaofacio
Dias, Wilfred DSa, Nilkant Halarnkar
and Isidor Fernandes.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant was
present when group arrived at the
Assembly complex around 7.30 pm.
Deputy Speaker Michael Lobo was
also present.
"Ten MLAs of Congress, twothird
of its strength, separated and
merged with the BJP," news agency
ANI quoted Lobo as saying. "Under
Schedule 10 of the Constitution, they
have done the merger."
With the MLAs changing sides, the
strength of Congress in the House
would be reduced to five. The BJP is
the single largest party with 17, the Goa
Forward Party and the Independents
have three each, while one MLA each
is from the Nationalist Congress Party
(NCP) and the Maharashtrawadi
Gomantak Party (MGP).
When asked, Kavlekar refused to
disclose the reason behind their move,
but said they will make a statement later.
Sawant was sworn in as the chief
minister in March this year, after the
death of then CM Manohar Parrikar.
Sitharaman breaks
tradition, carries
Budget in red cloth
instead of briefcase
Over 1 lakh pilgrims perform
Amarnath Yatra in 8 days
In a break from the British-era
tradition, Finance Minister Nirmala
Sitharaman arrived in Parliament
Friday with the documents of Union
Budget 2019 wrapped in a red cloth tied
with a string instead of carrying them
in a briefcase. The red folder also had
the national emblem emblazoned on it.
Red clothes are usually used to cover
religious texts.
Chief Economic Advisor
Krishnamurthy Subramanian called
it a sign of “departure from slavery of
Western slavery”.
“It is in Indian tradition. It symbolizes
our departure from slavery of Western
thought. It is not a budget but a ‘bahi
khata’ (ledger),” he was quoted as
saying by ANI.
While the tradition of carrying the
Budget in a briefcase has been on since
the British-era, Finance Ministers
have chosen to carry the document in
suitcases of different colours like red
velvet, black and even tan.
As Sitharaman delivers her maiden
Budget, the twin challenges for
Sitharaman are to spur growth and
create more jobs.
Delhi-Lucknow Tejas
Express set to be first
train to be run by
private operators
NEW DELHI: The Delhi-Lucknow Tejas
Express is set to be the first train to be
operated by private players, sources
said Monday, indicating that the
Railways is going ahead with its 100-day
agenda of handing over operations of
two of its trains to the private sector,
despite protests from its unions.
The Railway Board is deliberating on
a second such route, which too would
be within the 500-km distance range.
The Delhi-Lucknow Tejas Express was
announced in 2016 but was introduced
in the new time table released recently.
"These two trains will be given on an
experimental basis and we hope that
within the next 100 days, we will be
able to run at least one of them. The
idea was to identify routes which have
low congestion and connect important
tourists spots. The second tain too will
be identified soon," a senior official said.
Over one lakh pilgrims have performed
the Amarnath Yatra during the last
eight days as another batch of 5,964
yatris on Tuesday left Jammu for the
Kashmir Valley, officials said.
To date, 1,11,699 pilgrims have performed
the ongoing Yatra, officials said. This
year's 45-day long Hindu pilgrimage to the
Amarnath Cave shrine started on July
1 and will end on August 15, coinciding
with the Shravan Purnima festival.
The yatra began on Tuesday.
"The pilgrims on Tuesday left
Bhagwati Nagar Yatri Niwas in two
escorted convoys. Of these, 1,967
pilgrims are going to the Baltal base
camp while 3,997 are going to Pahalgam
base camp," a police officer said.
Yatris approach the cave shrine
either from the Baltal base camp using
the shorter 14-km long uphill trek or
from the traditional Pahalgam base
camp using the 42-km long uphill trek.
Helicopter services are available for
the pilgrims at both the base camps.
Situated at 3,888 metres above the
sea-level, the cave shrine houses an ice
stalagmite structure that waxes and
wanes with the phases of the moon.
Devotees believe the ice stalagmite
structure symbolises mythical powers
of Lord Shiva.
After public demands, the curbs on
the movement of civilian traffic on the
Jammu-Srinagar national highway have
been brought down to two hours daily.
Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya
Pal Malik has said these curbs are
important for the safety of the pilgrims.
Local Muslims have always lent a
helping hand to their Hindu brethren
so that they perform the Yatra with
ease and convenience.
In fact, till early 1980s, the Amarnath
Yatra has mostly remained confined to
Kashmiri Pandits and Sadhus.
The cave shrine was discovered by a
Muslim shepherd -- Buta Malik -- in 1850.
His descendants benefited immensely
from the discovery as they received
a portion of the offerings at the Cave
shrine for over 150 years.
Old chess piece bought
for Rs 430 was just
sold for Rs 6 crore at
London auction.
An antique chess piece that was bought
for just five pounds (Rs 430) in 1964
has been sold at an auction for 735,000
pounds ($927,000) or approximately Rs
6.3 crore. The Associated Press reports
that the Lewis Chessman piece, a
Viking relic, is about 900-years-old and
8.8 cm in height. It was purchased by
an anonymous bidder at Sotheby's in
London on Tuesday.
Intricately carved out of walrus
ivory in the 12th century, the Lewis
Chessmen are designed in the form of
Norse warriors. They are considered to
be the "greatest" artefacts of the Viking
era and are of great value.
The chess piece was initially found
in a Scottish antique dealer's drawer
as it was passed down to his family, as
per a report in ABC News. Several such
chess pieces were discovered in 1831
on Scotland's Isle of Lewis, AP reports.
The pieces formed four chess sets but
five pieces weren't found. The Sotheby's
piece that was sold on Tuesday appears
to be a rook and is the first missing
chessman to be identified.
In a statement published by ABC
News, a spokesperson for the Scottish
antique dealer's family said that the
chess piece was purchased in 1964 from
another Edinburgh dealer.
"It was catalogued in his purchase
ledger that he had bought an 'Antique
Walrus Tusk Warrior Chessman'. From
this description it can be assumed that
he was unaware he had purchased
an important historic artefact. It
was stored away in his home, and
then when my grandfather died my
mother inherited the chess piece," the
spokesperson said in the statement.
"For many years it resided in a
drawer in her home, where it had been
carefully wrapped in a small bag. From
time to time, she would remove the
chess piece from the drawer in order
to appreciate its uniqueness," the
statement added.
Galaxy Watch Active 2
said to offer real-time
ECG and fall detection
Samsung is going after the Apple Watch
4 with the next iteration of the Galaxy
Watch Active, which is getting two
new features: ECG and fall detection.
According to the folks at SamMobile,
the Galaxy Watch Active 2 is said to
retain a similar design as the current
model, with availability in 40mm and
44mm options.
But it's the ability to detect atrial
fibrillation that will make the
smartwatch stand out.
From SamMobile:
The app will let users capture their
heart rhythm when they experience
symptoms such as rapid or skipped, low
or irregular heartbeat. The data could
then be shared with physicians for an
expert opinion.
The device will also be able to provide
users with atrial fibrillation or Afib
notifications by occasionally checking
heart rhythm in the background. It's
the most common kind of irregular
rhythm and if it's not treated, it could
result in a stroke.
The ECG feature requires clearances
from local regulators, which is why the
Apple Watch 4 doesn't offer the feature
in all markets. Samsung will also have
to seek the same clearances, so it'll be
interesting to see what regions it will
roll out the feature.
Another new feature heading to
the Galaxy Watch Active 2 is fall
detection, which pulls up one-tap
options to contact emergency services
when the device detects a hard fall.
If there's no user input after the fall,
the smartwatch automatically call
emergency services and send a message
to a user's emergency contacts.
No indication as yet about when we'll
see the Galaxy Watch Active 2, but
we could see the smartwatch debut
alongside the Galaxy Note 10 on Aug 7.
Engineering marvel!
Indian Railways commissions longest
electrified tunnel in Andhra Pradesh
Adding another feather to its cap, South
Central Railway has commissioned the
longest electrified tunnel in the country.
The tunnel, an engineering marvel
measuring 6.6 kilometre, is situated
Construction of the longest tunnel
between Cherlopalli and Rapuru was
the major challenge for commissioning
of this important and vital railway
link. Completion of this tunnel in a
record time of 43 months has enabled
Railways to start freight operations on
this railway line, which has reduced
the distance between Krishnapatnam
Port and hinterland areas by 60 kms.
At present, the average travel
time taken by goods train from
Krishnapatnam Port to Obulavaripalli
Indian Railway
finds a new way to
tackle poor quality
foods on trains
New Delhi: Faced with complaints of poor
quality food, the Railways has begun
printing barcodes on the food packets and
providing other details like name of the
kitchen and date of packaging.
The measures, which have been
initiated in some places, are to be taken
across the country, Minister Piyush
Goyal told the Lok Sabha in reply to a
question.
Other measures to improve food quality
are roping in branded food providers to
provide e-catering services on trains,
deploying food safety supervisors in
kitchen units to monitor food safety
and hygiene practices, and surprise
inspections by railway officials,
including food safety officers, he said.
In order to improve the catering
services, and provide safe, healthy and
quality food to passengers, a new catering
policy was issued on February 27, 2017.
The Indian Railway Catering and
Tourism Corporation Limited (IRCTC)
also upgraded 46 kitchen units in the
last two years, and installed CCTV
cameras in 38 base kitchens for
monitoring the food preparation.
Web-based live streaming facility is
being extended to these kitchens, Goyal
said.
To upgrade the quality of meals to be
served to passengers, menus are being
rationalized by IRCTC, he added.
He said the Indian Railways has not set
up any committee to conduct an enquiry
regarding food quality. However, third
party audits are conducted by IRCTC to
check the quality of food on trains.
He acknowledged that "some
complaints" are received from time to
time regarding quality of food which
are "appropriately addressed".
From visa waiver to direct flights,
here's why Indians dominate
Thailand tourism
Indians are increasingly contributing
to the growth of Thailand's tourism
economy as the Chinese tourist
numbers have been dwindling,
according to reports.
Kongsak Khoopongsakorn, the
General Manager of Vijitt Resort in
Phuket, told Bloomberg that while
Chinese clients have decreased,
bookings from India have multiplied.
Thailand places huge importance on
its tourism sector which is reported to
account for 20 percent of its national
gross domestic product.
Chinese tourists have contributed to
the Thai tourism economy at the rate
of 10 percent a year. But a boat accident
that killed 47 Chinese nationals in 2018
and slowing economy in the mainland
has led to the dip in Chinese visits to
the country.
"We're starting to see new growth,"
said Kongsak who is also the
vice president of the Thai Hotels
Association. "Indians are now driving
industry growth as the Chinese had
previously done," he added.
Visa waiver, direct domestic flights
and increasing wealth of Indians visiting
the country for leisure are the reasons
for the rising number of Indian arrivals
in Thailand, according to Bloomberg.
More than 10 million Indian tourists
are expected to arrive in Thailand in
2028, which is around five-fold of the
number in 2018. The growth is said to
be similar to the rise of Chinese tourists
from 800,000 in 2008 to more than 10
million last year.
Thailand's Ministry of Tourism and
Sports said that a record 180,000 Indian
tourists visited the country in June. A
report by the ministry revealed that
Indians spend 11 per cent more per trip
than an average foreign tourist.
While Kongsak expressed his
confidence in the growing industry,
he warned that over-dependence on a
single market poses risk to the country.
"It's important to spread the risk and
have a good nationality mix in the
market. We can't rely on any single
market," reported Bloomberg.
Upcoming Delhi
textile fair to exhibit
fashion trends
New Delhi– Over 240 global
manufacturers in the field of fashion
will showcase emerging fashion trends
— colours, prints, fabrics, accessories
and lifestyle — in an upcoming textile
fair. It will run from July 15-17 at
Pragati Maidan here.
The ‘Textile Fairs India 2019’ will bring
supply chain partners from fibre to
fashion at three fair shows – YARNEX,
F&A Show and Fashion Connect.
The manufacturers come from India,
Austria, China, Hong Kong and Japan,
to showcase their latest developments
in fibres, yarns, apparel fabrics, trims,
embellishments and garments, the
organisers said.
It also aims to overview fashion
information for Spring Summer 2020
and Autumn Winter 2020.
Sustainable fashion also makes the
cut at the three-day fair, as industry
experts discuss the green way forward
in fashion. A showcase of recycled,
upcycled and circular fashion can also
be spotted.
Design and product awards also
feature in the event.
Not bothered by
social media trolls:
Sunny Leone
Mumbai–Actress Sunny Leone who has
immense fan following on social media
platforms has said she does not get
bothered by the trolls.
Sunny said this on Monday while
interacting with the media during
the launch of her own lingerie brand
‘Infamous’ at the India Licensing Expo
2019 here.
Asked whether she feels bad when
people troll her due to her dressing
sense, she said: “I feel being a celebrity,
we get trolled every day but I don’t
necessarily get bothered by trolls. I
wear clothes of my own choice. When
I feel like wearing T-shirt and jeans or
a sweatshirt, I wear it so, I wear what
makes feel good at that moment.”
Talking about her upcoming film
projects, Sunny said: “I am part of
‘Arjun Patiala’ and also doing a film
called ‘Coca Cola’ which would be
hopefully released this year.”
Asked if she is keen to produce a film
in Bollywood, she said: “Yes… now,
we have a good story and we have set
up our production team so, once we
will finalise the dates, we will start
shooting the film.”
Sunny had earlier launched her
cosmetic brand ‘StarStruck by Sunny
Leone’ and now, she has come up with
a lingerie brand ‘Infamous’.
The street style crowd wore
plenty of polka dots at paris
couture week
Is this spotty motif already replacing fashion's
ubiquitous leopard print?
Move over, leopard print. According to
the street style crowd at Couture Week
Fall 2019 in Paris, it looks like polka
dots are trying to win back the top spot
for fashion's favorite spotty motif.
While some of our favorite luxury
houses, from Chanel and Valentino to
Givenchy and Dior, debuted their latest
haute couture creations, we couldn't
help but notice how showgoers took on
plenty of different takes on the classic
polka-dot print, including colorful partyready
frocks and more summer-friendly,
all-white midi and maxi dresses. Though
most of these ensembles were dressed
up with heels — it's couture week, after
all — some folks took a more casual
approach with a fresh pair of sneakers,
which goes to show just how versatile
this classic and beloved print can be.
Asked how she sees herself as a
businesswoman, she said: “I like to
think that I am very good but my
husband (Daniel Weber) is better. I
feel both of us do very different kind
of things for our business but we do
it to attain same goals. Our outcome
and goals are always the same so, I
like to think that I am a pretty good
businesswoman.”
Malaika Arora
wears a sexy
blazer without a
shirt!
Bollywood hottie Malaika Arora never
fails to impress us with her style. Be
it her red carpet moments or her gym
looks, she's always dressed to the nines.
The 45-year-old celebrity is known for her
glowing skin, fit body and luscious hair
and her recent look has got us talking.
The stunner recently wore a pant-suit
by Mandira Wirk. Malaika rocked a
neon green coloured blazer with flared
pants. The jacket featured a plunging
neckline cinched with buttons at the
waist. She wore it minus the shirt,
making it look all sexy. With this
look, she styled the look with bright
pink pointed heels. Styled by Maneka
Harisinghani, she accessorised the look
with a pair of dazzling earrings and a
quirky ring.
When it came to her make-up,
Malaika went for a reverse cat eye
with lined eyes, highlighted cheeks
and nude pink lip colour. And, when it
came to her hairdo, the diva went for a
super-tight ponytail. We surely loved
her bold make-up look this time!
On the work front, Malaika, who's a
big fitness enthusiast has invested in
a fitness startup SARVA. Global icon
Jennifer Lopez has also invested in the
same startup. It is a yoga and Indian
wellness startup.
Netflix to cut back on smoking scenes
Netflix bosses have promised to cut back on smoking scenes in their films and series after an antitobacco
group named the streaming service one of the worst offenders of nicotine use onscreen.
Truth Initiative researchers have
released a new study that lists shows
like Stranger Things, The Unbreakable
Kimmy Schmidt, and Orange Is the
New Black, feature more tobacco use
Tanushree Dutta to
file protest petition
against clean chit to
Nana Patekar
Mumbai: In less than a month after the
Mumbai Police filed a closure report in
the alleged #MeToo sexual harassment
case lodged by Tanushree Dutta against
actor Nana Patekar, the actress will
now file protest petition against the
actor’s clean chit in the case.
Tanushree has opposed the
B-Summary report filed by the Oshiwara
Police station. She was represented
by advocate Nitin Satpute at Railway
Mobile Court in Andheri here.
“The court has granted her time to file
a protest petition against the B-Summary
report. Tanushree’s legal team was
present, but not a single officer from the
Oshiwara Police station was in the court
room at the time of hearing. The case has
been adjourned to September 7,” Satpute
told this agency Sunday.
In June, Mumbai Police spokesperson,
Deputy Commissioner of Police
Manjunath Shinge had told this agency:
“Yes, we have filed a B-Summary
Report before the court.”
The police move came after they
reportedly did not find enough evidence
in the matter, virtually ending the
case as they cannot continue further
investigations.
Satpute had then only said that they
would challenge the police move in the
matter.
The actress had lodged the complaint
against Nana in September 2018
accusing him of allegedly sexually
harassing her over a decade ago, in
2008 during a shoot, but he had stoutly
denied the charges levelled by her.
than most shows.
“Streaming content providers should
heed the lessons learned from the
motion picture industry, which has
responded to the surgeon general’s
conclusion that exposure to smoking
on screens causes young people to
smoke,” the report reads.
Netflix officials have responded by
stating they recognize that smoking
is “harmful” and “when portrayed
positively on screen can adversely
influence young people.”
“Going forward, all new projects that
we commission with ratings of TV-14 or
below for series or PG-13 or below for
Sacred Games 2
to return on
Aug 15, Gaitonde
promises a
bigger game
After much anticipation the trailer of
Netflix Original series Sacred Games
has released. Starring Saif Ali Khan,
Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Pankaj
Tripathi in lead roles, the second
season will follow the journey of Saif's
Sartaj as he comes to terms with his
reality and tries to get to the bottom of
the mystery that is Ganesh Gaitonde
(Nawazuddinn Siddiqui).
Like the first season, Gaitonde's
omniscient voice over leads the characters
and the audiences. This season's outings
will largely hinge on Pankaj's Trivedi,
who is shown to be running a cult in his
own right and has his own set of followers.
The trailer also hints that the game is
bigger than all of them.
Sacred Games season 2 introduces two
fresh faces in Ranvir Shorey and Kalki
Koechlin, while the focus will be on
the chase between Sartaj and Trivedi,
as Gaitonde makes us realise the
importance of amorality in these times.
Sacred Games season 2 drops on
August 15.
While the fans wait for another
thrilling outing, suffice it to know
that Anurag Kashyap has directed
Ganesh Gaitonde's track, while Neeraj
Ghaywan (Masaan) has replaced
Vikramaditya Motwane as the other
director. Neeraj will direct Sartaj's
track in the upcoming season.
Vikramaditya Motwane and Varun
Grover continue as the showrunners
and the lead writers of the show.
films, will be smoking and e-cigarette
free – except for reasons of historical or
factual accuracy,” a Netflix statement,
released to Variety, reads.
“For new projects with higher
ratings, there’ll be no smoking or
e-cigarettes unless it’s essential to the
creative vision of the artist or because
it’s character-defining (historically or
culturally important).”
The statement continues: “In addition,
starting later this year, smoking
information will be included as part of
our ratings on the Netflix service so our
members can make informed choices
about what they watch.”
as he shared the post, the picture went
viral on the Internet and fans can't stop
praising the uncanny resemblance.
He shared the look and wrote, ''On
million. Overseas, Disney’s live-action
remake of the 1992 animated classic
the top-grossing non-Marvel movie this
Installation of
digital fare meters
for taxis from Aug 1
PANAJI: State-wide installation
of digital fare meters in tourist
taxis will begin from August 1 and
conclude within six months, the state
government informed the high court
of Bombay at Goa on Friday. However,
implementation on pilot basis will be
done between July 16 and July 31, the
government told the court.
The integrated digital meter unit will
comprise an automated tracking device
with an emergency system, and fare
meter with printer.
Fitting of digital meters is mandatory
as per Rule 140 of the Goa State Motor
Vehicle Rules, 1991. All new taxis
applying for a fresh permit from Aug 1
will have to compulsorily fit the meters
as also those renewing their old permits.
Hike in customs duty
cashew growers
PANAJI: Finance minister Nirmala
Sitharaman’s move to hike customs
duty on cashew kernels has brought
cheer to Goa’s cashew processing
industry. Such a move could put curbs
on the low-quality cashew kernel
shipments from Africa and ASEAN
countries, they said. Every year 10-12
thousand tonnes of raw cashew is
processed in Goa yielding around Rs
350 crore for Goan cashew farmers.
The Centre’s decision will protect
public since December 2018, because it
was fully rusted and almost collapsed. It
was repaired, painted and then opened
to the public,” a forest official told TOI.
make cashew imports expensive.
Stakeholders observed that African
and ASEAN countries had begun to
dump cheap and low-quality nuts into
India and this in turn had impacted
local production. Cashew kernels from
Vietnam, Mozambique, Ivory Coast are
currently imported on a massive scale
causing cashew kernel prices to come
down by 30% in India, an industry
representative said.
India currently produces 3.5 lakh
tonnes of cashew kernels. Goa
processes between 10,000 to 12,000
tonnes of cashew nuts per year, and the
shortfall is made up through raw
cashew imports from Indonesia,
Tanzania and other African countries.
and opened to public from April
onwards,” the official added.
Located 300 metres from the reception
office of the Salim Ali bird sanctuary,
the 15-mt tall watchtower offers a view
of the top canopy of the island’s trees,
the village of Chorao and that of river
Mandovi. School children and college
students are frequent visitors of the
sanctuary while birders usually walk
up the watchtower to sight various
bird species.
There is another tower, 25 mts tall, in
the interior of the sanctuary, access to
which is only through the creek.
“The second watchtower was built
recently and is in a good condition.
There is no requirement for any repairs
over it as of now,” the official said.
With a bountiful vegetation of about
14 different mangrove species, the
sanctuary serves as a suitable habitat
for planktons, shrimps, prawns and
small fish. It is covered by a network of
water channels having tidal variations.
Every winter, migratory birds flock in
thousands to feed on the mud flats in
the sanctuary.
Music can help student score better
in Math, Science, and English
The researchers found the predictive relationships between music
education and academic achievement were more pronounced for
those who took instrumental music rather than vocal music.
Music has proved to be beneficial
in many ways but now a recent
study discovered a new benefit of it.
According to the finding, high school
students who take music courses score
significantly better in math, science
and English exams than their peers.
School administrators needing to
trim budgets often look first to music
courses, because the general belief
is that students who devote time to
music rather than Math, Science, and
English, will underperform in those
disciplines.
“Our research proved this belief wrong
and found the more the students engage
with music, the better they do in those
subjects. The students who learned to
play a musical instrument in elementary
and continued playing in high school
not only score significantly higher, but
were about one academic year ahead
of their non-music peers with regard to
their English, mathematics and science
skills, as measured by their exam grades,
regardless of their socioeconomic
background, ethnicity, prior learning in
mathematics and English, and gender,”
said the study’s principal investigator,
Peter Gouzouasis in the study published
in the journal of Educational Psychology.
Gouzouasis and his team examined
data from all students in public schools
who finished Grade 12 between 2012! and
2015. The data sample, made up of more
than 112,000 students, included those who
completed at least one standardized exam
for math, science, and English, and for
whom the researchers had appropriate
demographic information including
gender, ethnicity, neighborhood
socioeconomic status, and prior learning
in numeracy and literacy skills.
Students who studied at least
one instrumental music course in
the regular curriculum counted as
students taking music. Qualifying
music courses are courses that
require previous instrumental music
experience and include concert band,
conservatory piano, orchestra, jazz
band, concert choir, and vocal jazz.
The researchers found the predictive
relationships between music education
and academic achievement were
more pronounced for those who took
instrumental music rather than vocal
music. The findings suggested skills
learned in instrumental music transfer
very broadly to the students’ learning
in school.
“Learning to play a musical
instrument and playing in an ensemble
is very demanding. A student has to
learn to read music notation, develop
eye-hand-mind coordination, develop
keen listening skills, develop team
skills for playing in an ensemble and
develop the discipline to practice. All
those learning experiences and more
What makes Jagannath Rath Yatra so special?
The much awaited Lord Jagannath Rath Yatra in Puri kicked-off last week. Given the preparations
done for the grand procession, many among us could not help but get awed by the sheer importance of
this event. Many are also curious to know about the significance of Jagannath Rath Yatra, and why so
many Krishna devotees throng Puri in Odisha to witness this event? Here are the answers to it.
time. Another wonderful aspect of the
yatra is that non-Hindus and foreign
nationals are allowed to visit the
Gundicha Temple to behold the gods
and even partake the offerings.
On the third day of the Rath Yatra,
Lord Jagannath’s devotees stage a
play in which the deity meets his
spouse Lakshmi after a long time. In
the play, Lakshmi complains about
being neglected by the Lord, and after
a lovers’ tiff, she breaks the chariot
wheel belonging to Lord Jagannath and
makes a quick exit from the temple.
Then after, the Lord visits the shrine
of Lakshmi at Gohiri Sahei to woo
her back. Once united with her on the
Vijay Dashami day, the Lord goes back
to Shri Mandir with his siblings.
play a role in enhancing the learner’s
cognitive capacities, executive
functions, motivation to learn in
school, and self-efficacy,” said the
study’s co-investigator Martin Guhn.
“Often, resources for music education
including the hiring of trained,
specialized music educators, and band
and stringed instruments are cut or not
available in elementary and secondary
schools so that they could focus on
math, science and English. The irony is
that music education multiple years of
high-quality instrumental learning and
playing in a band or orchestra or singing
in a choir at an advanced level can be
the very thing that improves all-around
academic achievement and an ideal way
to have students learns more holistically
in schools,” concluded Gouzouasis.
Well, this festival starts from the
second day of Ashada month during the
waxing phase of the moon of the Hindu
lunar calendar. Idols of Lord Jagannath
or Krishna, enshrined in the Shri
Mandir of Puri with his sister Subhadra
and elder brother Balabhadra, are taken
out on the roads on three different
chariots to the Gundicha Mata Temple.
The Ratha Yatra or Rath Jatra is also
known as Gundicha Jatra, Navadina
Jatra, Ghosa Jatra, Dasavatara Jatra
and other names. Gundicha is believed
to be the queen of King Indradyumna
(the maker of Jagannath temple). It
is believed that the Lord was pleased
with the queen’s devotions and
conferred a boon upon her, promising
to visit her palace once a year for a
few days’ stay. The residence of Queen
Gundicha turned into a temple later. It
is beautifully made on the lines of the
Kalinga style of architecture.
Another legend has it that Gundicha
is Lord Jagannath’s aunt, who loves
to welcome her nephews every year to
pamper them with love and affection.
The significance of the Rath Yatra is
immense for a person, who longs for
spiritual merit and final liberation.
It is believed that anyone who pulls
the rope linked to the chariots of the
deities and helps others also in doing so
or merely touches the rope or chariots,
gets the merit of several penances. All
the paraphernalia linked to the Lord
Jagannath Rath Yatra becomes one
with the deity himself.
The deities are fed with their
favourite offering of Poda Pitha at this
Idols of Lord Jagannath, elder brother
Balabhadra and sister Subhadra (Photo:
It is believed that the sight of Lord
Jagannath and his siblings at Gundicha
Temple cannot go vain; it bestows the
boon of a hundred horse sacrifices,
which only the luckiest kings had the
privilege to perform in the olden days.
Perhaps, there is no other procession
in India as grand as the Lord Jagannath
Rath Yatra.

James Bond’s Aston Martin DB5
expects to nab £5m at auction
Fender-mounted Browning .30-caliber machine guns
Centre-console defence-mechanism controls
Radar-tracking GPS system
A gadget-laden 1965 Aston Martin is
expected to fetch up to £5 million when
it goes to auction this summer.
Made famous by Sean Connery’s
James Bond in 1964 movie Goldfinger
– the rare spec DB5 was famously fitted
with a Browning .30 calibre machine
gun on each rear arch, among its many
lavish touches.
Revolving license plates
Wheel-hub-mounted tire slashers
Those with a (Golden) eye for detail
will notice this particular model was
actually made to promote the following
year’s Thunderball, also starring
Connery behind the wheel. It is one
of just three surviving examples of
the iconic car commissioned by Eon
Productions.
It will be sold by RM Sotheby’s at its
2019 Monterey auction on August 15.
In its original guise, Bond’s spy car
of choice was fitted with an array of
gadgets which, as well as the machine
guns, included hub-mounted tyre
slashers, revolving registration
plates, a bullet-proof screen, in-car
radar tracking, an oil spill function,
an ejecting passenger seat and smoke
screen dispensers.
One of two 1964 originals though,
was stolen in 1997 but the culprit was
never (Gold) fingered and remains lost.
The car offered by Sotheby’s never
appeared on screen but boasts an
identical specification to the starring
vehicles.
For 35 years the DB5 was displayed as
the centrepiece of the Smokey Mountain
Car Museum in Tennessee, before being
sold in 2006 in an unrestored state.
Swiss firm Roos Engineering has since
painstakingly returned the car to its
original condition.
When it heads to California in two
months’ time, the storied car is likely
Ejector seat system
to draw up to $6m (£4.7m) at ‘An
Evening with Aston Martin’, which
will see more than 30 cars from the
firm go under the hammer.
Disappointed bidders may take
comfort in the fact Aston Martin plans
to make 25 replica Goldfinger DB5s, to
be sold for £2.75m a piece before tax.
To be delivered in 2020, the facsimiles
will come finished in the iconic Silver
Birch paint job and feature a working
revolving licence plate. They won’t,
however, be road-legal.
