Graphic shows the gastrointestinal tract in situ. The liver <strong>and</strong> the greater omentum have been removed. Note the relatively central<br />

location of the small intestine compared with the peripherally located large intestine. Most of the bowel segments are intraperitoneal,<br />

apart from the 2nd to 4th parts of the duodenum, the ascending <strong>and</strong> descending colon, <strong>and</strong> middle 1/3 of the rectum, which are<br />

retroperitoneal. The distal 1/3 of the rectum is extraperitoneal.<br />
