Retained Products of Conception
(Left) Sagittal color Doppler
US of the uterus in a patient
with RPOC shows 2 rounded
echogenic areas in the
endometrial cavity with
internal vascularity , which
are foci of retained placenta.
(Right) Axial CECT in the same
patient confirms that the
endometrial masses are
enhancing and compatible
with retained products of
conception. In this case,
contrast-enhanced CT did not
provide any additional
information.
Diagnoses: Female Pelvis
(Left) Sagittal color Doppler
US shows marked vascularity
ſt within a large RPOC, which
distends the endometrial
cavity . Degree of
vascularity is so pronounced
that it can be confused for
AVM. However, vascularity
involves endometrium as well
as myometrium, a helpful
finding in correctly diagnosing
RPOC. (Right) Longitudinal
color Doppler US shows
avascular RPOC with
thickened endometrial echo
complex . Avascular RPOC
may be difficult to distinguish
from blood clot but both are
likely to pass spontaneously.
(Left) Axial T2WI MR with fat
saturation in a patient with
RPOC shows a heterogeneous
hypointense mass in the
right uterine cavity. (Right)
Axial post-contrast T1WI MR
with fat saturation in the
same patient confirms the
rounded area is enhancing ,
consistent with RPOC.
