Simple Renal Cyst
(Left) Longitudinal ultrasound
shows a simple cyst.
Artifactual echoes are present
in the peripheral aspect st,
which should not be confused
with internal debris or
nodularity. Strong posterior
acoustic enhancement is
visible . (Right) As seen on
this longitudinal ultrasound,
multiple small peripelvic cysts
can mimic hydronephrosis;
CT may be required to
distinguish between them.
Small cysts may not
demonstrate clear posterior
acoustic enhancement, as in
this case.
Diagnoses: Urinary Tract
(Left) Transverse ultrasound of
the left kidney shows multiple
large peripelvic cysts ,
mimicking hydronephrosis. The
renal pelvis cannot be
distinguished from the cysts.
(Right) Delayed-phase CECT in
the same patient, rotated 90°
to match the ultrasound,
confirms the presence of
peripelvic cysts , which
surround the contrast-filled
collecting system but do
not communicate with it.
(Left) Longitudinal ultrasound
of the right kidney shows an
exophytic lower pole cystic
lesion ſt with thin internal
septa . (Courtesy P. Sidhu,
MD.) (Right) Contrastenhanced
ultrasound (left) and
corresponding grayscale
ultrasound (right) of the same
cystic right renal lesion ſt
show no internal
enhancement, confirming a
benign minimally complex
cyst. (Courtesy P. Sidhu, MD.)
