Horseshoe Kidney
(Left) Longitudinal oblique
ultrasound through the right
lower abdomen in a child
shows a horseshoe kidney with
hydronephrosis of both
moieties. The right
hydronephrosis st was more
severe than the left ſt. Both
pelves are malrotated. (Right)
Transverse ultrasound of the
same patient shows the thick
parenchymal isthmus ſt and
bilateral collecting system
dilatation st. Aorta and
inferior vena cava are also
seen.
Diagnoses: Urinary Tract
(Left) Longitudinal oblique
ultrasound of an adult with a
horseshoe kidney shows the
malrotated right moiety ſt
fused to the left moiety st.
(Right) Volume rendered CT
arteriogram of a horseshoe
kidney in a 73 year old. There
are multiple renal arteries ſt
supplying the kidneys. The
inferior mesenteric artery st
runs anterior and superior to
the isthmus which consists of
renal tissue.
(Left) In the right moiety of
the horseshoe kidney, a
hypoenhancing slightly
heterogeneous mass is
appreciated on this axial
CECT. Because of coexisting
gynecologic cancer,
percutaneous ultrasoundguided
biopsy was performed,
revealing renal cell carcinoma.
(Right) On this axial CECT,
incidental note is made of
nephrolithiasis within the
right moiety of a horseshoe
kidney, without obstruction.
