(Top) Graphic illustrates the zonal anatomy of the prostate in the coronal plane. The proximal 1/2 of the prostatic urethra is surrounded
by preprostatic sphincter, which extends inferiorly to the level of the verumontanum and encloses the periurethral glands. The
transition zone is a downward extension of the periurethral glands around the verumontanum. (Bottom) Graphic illustrates the zonal
anatomy of the prostate in the sagittal plane. The outer prostate is composed of the central zone and peripheral zone. The central zone
surrounds the proximal urethra posterosuperiorly, enclosing both the periurethral glands and the transition zone. It forms most of the
prostatic base. The peripheral zone surrounds both the central zone and the distal prostatic urethra.
