City of Golden Friendship

Ahoy there! Beyond the crashing waves and endless depths of
Neptune’s seven seas, there lies a paradise for adventure seekers.
And by adventure, I mean wet and wild and thrilling fun.
Growing up, I wasn’t really a fan of heights. But, boy, was a fan of
swimming, beaches, and pools. Now, though, I realized life is short
and what better way to experience it than going all out. Why not enjoy
best of both worlds?
If you’re like me who thirsts for adrenaline, then let’s journey together
to this water paradise.
Summer time may be coming to a close but the heat certainly isn’t
over.
So ready your rash guard and put on some sun screen. We’re off to an
adventure!

Setting Sail
Nestled just a 20-minute car ride from
Cagayan de Oro‘s city proper, there lies
a seaside gem situated at Barra, Opol.
For those who are geographicallyuncoordinated,
Cagayan de Oro is the
capital of Misamis Oriental. To picture
it out even clearer, that’s in Region
10 — Northern Mindanao. Just a mere
one hour and twenty-minute flight from
NAIA.
Having grown up in Cagayan de Oro,
I can say it’s a far cry from the buzzing
and monumental Metro Manila.
Although, being one of the fastest
growing cities in Mindanao in recent
years, CDO is becoming an urban force
to be reckoned with.
Moreover, more than any tourist
attraction, CDO boasts its warm and
hospitable people. It isn’t called the
“City Of Golden Friendship” for nothing.
An array of tourist grabbers, a set of
inborn hospitality, my hometown is on a
sea of endless possibilities.
Riding the Seven Seas
Speaking of rides: It has 10 heartthumping
water slides, a 400-meter lazy
river, a kids’ water play area, and a dual
wave pool.
Just thinking about the thrill of the rides
sends shivers down my spine. And I like
it!
They’ve got the Cannon Ball Run,
Cutlass, Pacific Reef, and the Cyclone
which needs to have 4 people on the
float. They also have the PlankDrop
which is the country’s first almost
90-degree single water slide.
Plus, the Riptide Reef, Escape Tunnel
Pira–Chute, and Buccaneer Bay Wave
Pool.
Oh, Captain! My Captain!
Seven Seas is the brainchild of the same
entrepreneurial mind who brought Asia
its first longest dual zipline in Dahilayan
Adventure Park in Bukidnon — UC-1
Corporation’s Engr. Elpidio M. Paras.
Now that they’ve conquered the sky and
mountains, I guess it’s pretty clear they’d
want to ride the waters and seas.
Having opened to the public last October
2017, Seven Seas is a first of its kind and
definitely the largest pirate-themed
resort in the Philippines.
The Verdict
Wherever you go, whoever you’re with, the most important thing is to have fun.
I particularly enjoyed my stay at Seven Seas. I totally got what I came for—the sun,
the thrill, and my friends. The place was built for groups. I guess anyone can go alone,
but where’s the fun in that? I understand that some want to travel on their own, but my
advice? If you go to Seven Seas Waterpark and Resort, go with friends or with family.
More than the place itself is the time I’ve spent with good people. The place definitely
is IG-worthy. But screaming from my life when I got dropped to that nearly 90-degree
slide is equivalent to the stories and smiles I’ve shared with friends I haven’t seen in a
while.
I may have already moved to Manila and left CDO behind. But I guess now I have
enough reason to come home.

SONGKRUN 2019: A SOLD-OUT AND
STAR-STUDDED FUN RUN EVENT
Successful is an understatement if you are to
describe how SongkRUN PH 2019 went. From
a massive sold-out to the most memorable
fun run this summer! If you joined the wettest
and wildest event this year, you will surely agree
to this.
Star-studded Event
Runners from different categories took their
chances to take selfies from these famous
celebrities! GMA’s Primetime King Dingdong
Dantes joined the run together with other soaked
sprinters.
Kapamilya marathoner Kuya Kim Atienza graced
the event and even lead the prayer for the safety
of the racers.
Influencer Kimpoy Feliciano and Miss Scuba
International 2015 Cindy Madd also finished the
race with wide smiles.
While TV host and dancer Regine Tolentino led a
Zumba session before and after the race. Runners
followed every spin and shake of Miss Regine with
her hunky back-up dancers.
GMA News also had a coverage of the event! This
proves the massive success of Metro’s biggest
water brawl!

their masks all too well, Kevin Balot stands a cut above the rest.

Pride Month commemorates not only the
celebration of our uniqueness, but the
struggles that comes along with it. The
Stonewall Riots of ‘69 in New York City sparked
the beginning of a new era showing how we
will not be silenced. A milestone that created
ripples to a bigger wave we recognize today.
Village Pipol Magazine goes spectrum in honor
of this momentous occasion with Kevin Balot
on our cover.
REDEFINING REALNESS
Kevin marches with her head held high in all of
her glory — both raw and authentic. Proving
to those who see the world in black and white
that it is, in fact, filled with a kaleidoscope of
colors. And that, if we wish to be truly free, it
needs to begin inside. For the most important
kind of freedom is being unapologetically who
you are.
“Nung bata pa ako, my Tito Obet gave me a
gift from Taipei which was a robot then yung
kay ate naman doll. Iyak lang daw ako ng iyak
kasi gusto ko kung ano yung kay ate ko, yun din
ang akin,” Kevin recalled the first memory she
had when she realized who she’s meant to be.
While there exist thousands who are trapped
by their families, religions, or beliefs, Kevin
was held captive inside her own body. Her
inner truth did not match her outer self,
being assigned male at birth. Like most of
the LGBTQ+ community, coming out left her
scarred.
“Mahirap! Hindi ito natanggap agad ng family,
especially ni Papa. Kaya mahirap kasi lagi kami
nag-aaway because of this. Basta half of my
childhood memory is masakit, lagi ako umiiyak
at nasasaktan.”
Nevertheless, this convention killer boldly
challenged gender norms. Back in 2012, she
decided to get a sex reassignment surgery. To
many, a revolutionary act on its own.
“Alam ko talaga bata pa lang ako na may mali.
I felt like a woman trapped in a man’s body,”
Kevin stated how she took inspiration from
herself for this turning point in her life.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT SIDE OF HISTORY
As a strict Catholic country, the Philippines have stayed quite close-minded and regressive in terms of gender and its
complexity. The harsh reality is how Filipinos would often equate tolerance as acceptance. Except, this mentality seems
farther from the truth. Even the likes of Kevin had her fair share of horrors, but she is glad to how we are slowly making
progress.
Currently, several legislations ensures anti-discrimination for the community. Be that as it may, bigotry is very much alive
masking it with the idea of ‘fairness’. Advocating for equality should not be one over the other.
“Respect differences then understand! Lahat tayo magkakaiba so [kapag] hindi mo kaya unawain, talo ka,” Kevin stated on
her thoughts for inclusivity to all.
Additionally, she urged everyone to never stop reveling in the grandeur of life and of yourself. Dolls may have long
symbolized a twisted example of perfection, but she has since then deviated from this misrepresentation.
The goal never concerned achieving impractical proportions. Rather, it’s about self-revelation and the beauty of becoming
who she really is. Her parting message to those struggling with their identity, Kevin advises to prioritize one’s happiness.
“It’s better for you na sabihin mo sa parents mo. If hindi nila tanggap, hindi mo na problem 'yun. At least, ginawa mo ang part
mo bilang anak nila. And sa iba na until now you’re still hiding something in life, if not now, when?”

On the other hand, she couldn’t help but remember the hesitation she had before transitioning. It still boiled down to the pain of her father not accepting her, but her dream
must go on. Day by day, Kevin believed she will make it past this and she did.
At first glance, she does exude the strength and determination. Regardless, you could not miss the sadness in her eyes when speaking about her loved ones. She notes that
not a single thing could possibly compensate if she had her family’s support in the first place. They might not have seen each other eye to eye but, in the end, blood would
always be thicker than water.
Despite all the changes she’d undergone, Kevin said being optimistic will remain forever. Similarly, we couldn’t help but wonder why she chose to keep her name and the
symbolism behind it.
“Ate is Karen, I’m Kevin, then si bunso [ay] Kimberly. So, baka pwede ko ng mabigay sa mom ko 'yung part na napagod siya kung paano niya isipin mga names naming
magkakapatid.”
Of the countless hurdles she encountered, her courage finally paid off. Kevin was hailed Miss International Queen 2012, a pageant for transgender women from across the

A
n actor portrays a character in a performance.
They become the muscle and flesh of an
existing body of brain and bones. Preproduction
builds a character with foundation and
actors during production give it life. Post-production,
then, adds the music, animation and basically, the
magic that makes it all perfect.
Manolo Pedrosa embodies his craft as a true and
talented actor. He is filled with passion, hard work and
dedication. With his talent, he strives long and hard to
become one of the notable names in the industry. He
already has the devotion for his craft and the hunger
for more. He also has the whole road of possibilities
waiting for him. The chinito sweetheart only needs
to continue his journey and take the shots as he goes
along.
DRIVEN WITH PASSION
Manolo says that acting has a whole lot of intricate
webs that you thread together to make someone out
of nothing. Actors create an attitude, personality and
behavior to a name, to a character on TV or movies.
"Acting is bigger than just merely acting, it is so
complex which makes it challenging and fun."
Actors create an entirely new persona with their art,
portraying a different character every time. Manolo
loved that fact about his job and its impact became
the reason why he continues to do it.
"We all watched movies or series that gave us
an impact, be it to make us cry or laugh. It's just
fascinating for me how acting can do that. To be given
an opportunity to do even something close to that is
amazing."

AN UNFORTUNATE BREAK FROM THE
SPOTLIGHT
A few years ago, Manolo went on an indefinite
hiatus. No one really knew anything: why he
disappeared and when will he come back. As
he rises from his bench, he finally revealed why
he and his career suddenly went dark. He felt a
sudden and agonizing pain but still continued in
doing a scene from a show he was supposed to do.
"It was a tough experience, I was actually on set
when I realized something was very wrong. The
scene was simply just to stand up and say some
lines. As I did, I felt a very sharp pain in my lower
back. I shrieked in pain, 'Sorry, direk.' I had no
choice, I still had to finish the scene and went
home in agonizing pain. Afterwards, I got an MRI
to confirm the bulging disc."
A bulging or herniated disc can occur anywhere
along the spine, mostly happens in the lower back.
It also becomes one of the most common causes
of lower back pain, as well as leg pain or sciatica.
Despite the pain, Manolo didn't agree with having
a surgery and opted for alternative medicine.
"It's the lower back we're talking about here, no
way I would have surgery as young as 16 years
old. There had to be another way. So, I researched
and researched [until] I found ways to fix it noninvasively."

GOING BACK TO NORMAL
A herniated disc symptoms can subside on its own over time without medical intervention. Although symptoms may resolve, it doesn’t necessarily mean it has healed. With
that said, Manolo rehabilitated his disc with no special work-out but went back to his normal routine and improved his diet.
"I actually went back to my normal routine. Got better lifting gear and really focus on form. Doctors would tell not to lift weights anymore as for my safety but it was lifting
weights that helped strengthen my body. I cleaned up my diet, no more processed and junk food. I replaced that with more nutrient-dense foods to nourish my body to help
itself heal up."
During his spare time, we could see Manolo in two places: at home or at the gym. When he remains at his house, he relishes in researching about topics he finds interesting.
He also learns new things as much as he could, acquiring and modifying existing knowledge.
"For my free time, you'll only see me in two places... As a huge introvert, it would be being alone in home I recharge by being in solitude. With that, I do a lot of learning
through reading books, listening to audiobooks, research. I love learning new things."
Manolo goes to the gym often. He also makes it his hobby to stay in shape, maintaining his build as he improves his strength. He has to battle himself which teaches him a
lot about himself and his brawn.
"Aside from being home, you'll see me at the gym. I love lifting weights; it's my #1 hobby. It is my passion. Not only is it required to my work to look good but in
bodybuilding, your only competition is yourself and it teaches you a lot. I like that."
Aside from physical self-care with exercise and diet, Manolo also meditates for thirty minutes every day for a sound mental health. He had to gain his confidence back after
the whole situation. He stayed positive throughout the process and believed that with patience, something would somehow work. With that said, there are others who fall
into the same situation as him and he encourages them to remain courageous and brave.
"I would tell them not to be scared. The human body is powerful, just give it the right conditions and it will heal. Do your research."

Manolo has been thriving in romantic comedies.
Speaking of stepping out of his comfort zone, he
actually would dream on prospering in a thriller
genre. He expressed that the category controls
the viewer's emotions, more likely with faster
heartbeats and shallow breaths.
"My favorite genre is thriller, the mix of emotions
I feel watching a thriller is just amazing. So, it
[has] got to be [a] thriller, no matter what role. I
would love to do that."
Manolo gets into a character in silence, letting
the attributes course from his mind to his actions.
He takes his time in analyzing a character which
obviously takes a lot of time, energy and effort.
"When I'm actually on set and working, I like
to not think so much. The preparation and the
actual work for me is before takes. The character
analysis, emotional obligation, memorization of
lines, etc., should all be in me before I come in
the set. Once the director says 'Action,' it should
just flow through."

ABANDONING THE COMFORT ZONE
Actors sometimes get thrust in a situation which exceeded over their comfort zone. Manolo experiences that every time and he handles it like a responsible
young man. He, then, expresses his gratitude to GMA Network for putting him in acting workshops for making him confident out of his comfort zone.
"I am a young adult who lived a sheltered life, doesn't have much life experience and someone who is not gifted with much talent. With that said, it's definitely
a challenge for me. Acting is all about stepping outside your comfort zone. This is especially true in the acting workshops provided by GMA. It's mostly taking
a leap of faith and trusting the process."
Manolo loves his fans with all his heart. Driven with passion, he expresses his gratitude towards the people who continue to support him whatever it takes.
Keeping it short and sweet, he has a message to his love-filled and doting fans.
"Team Manalo, thank you so much for supporting me in all those years, no matter what happened. Even when I had a hiatus from showbiz, you guys still stuck
by me [until] I came back. Much love."
