from the
editor
Feeling
hot, hot, hot!!!
July is arguably one of the hottest months here in South
Florida so, while our seasonal visitors head back north to
escape our heat, us locals relish in less crowded restaurants
and venues. If you’re looking for ideas on keeping cool, check
out our Beat the Heat feature. Nicol Jenkins has many ideas
on ways to have fun without breaking a sweat. One of my new favorite
places to cool off is our very own iPic Theater! Movies in the most
comfortable seats with stealthy servers that bring you anything you’d
like? Oh yeah – you’ll find me there often!
Our City Person this month is Delray Beach’s City Attorney Lynn
Gelin. She has a passion for law and helping others – a wonderful
combination. After serving for 19 years in the Broward County Public
Defender’s Office, she saw there was an opening in Delray Beach and
now she’s part of our tight knit community. Read about Lynn in our
regular feature City People.
There’s no better place to celebrate Independence Day than in our
All America City! For over 50 years The City of Delray has hosted a
family friendly event that welcomes over 70,000 people to our beach.
There is live music, volleyball tournaments, sandcastle contests,
food eating contests, and so much more! And once it gets dark…
FIREWORKS!!! Look inside for our feature An All American July 4th
which includes the schedule of events for the day, there is something
for everyone from morning till night – you don’t want to miss anything!
Yesterday
I was clever,
so I wanted
to change the
world. Today
I am wise, so
I am changing
myself
Spotlight
In their own words
posh properties
BY Stephanie Vorcheimer, RealTOR®
By way of introduction, I am Stephanie Vorcheimer.
Originally from New Jersey, I moved to South Florida in
1992. I have lived in Broward County for 20 years, moving
to Delray in 2004, which I call my home. I realized I wanted to
help people on a different level, so I became a realtor in 2012.
I have worked with many different people successfully; sellers,
buyers and tenants. My specialty is transitional sellers and
buyers. My personal dedication and understanding that this is
a difficult time ensures that my clients transition easily to their
new home. At this time sellers and buyers need more than
just a realtor. My strong understanding of Delray Beach, Palm
Beach and Broward Counties inventory and trends allow me to
locate the perfect property in any given area.
locals only | delray under $50
By Darien Davies
Delray Under $50
Now that Delray Beach is a rising star in the art, culture and social scene,
it might seem a little difficult to find affordable activities, shops or
restaurants. I am here to prove you wrong. Delray Beach
offers a mix of high-end boutiques with laid-back
restaurants, and events for the whole family or
nightclubs for night owls. Here is what you can do
in Delray Beach in July for $50 or less.
It’s one of the biggest parties in Delray and it’s finally back! To
ring in our Independence Day, the City goes all out with a big
block party at the beach, and you’re invited. July 4 falls on a
Thursday this year, which could be a great start to a four day weekend
if you play your cards right. To get the most out of the day, pack
all your beach goodies and stake your claim in the sand or along
A1A as early as you can manage. Sand sculpting begins at 8 a.m.
and the volleyball tournament begins at 8:30 a.m. so pick whichever
peaks your interest. The music starts at 5:30 p.m. but there’s
a ton to do in between, including water activities, beer gardens,
children games, food vendors, and more. The fireworks begin at 9
p.m. and will be shot off a barge in the ocean, so you’re almost guaranteed
to have viewing potential regardless of your location. Grab
your friends, sunscreen and beach chairs, and head downtown for
a great time having fun in the sun. The majority of the action is on
A1A and Atlantic Avenue, and, if you can, go green and use the bikes
to get around. Visit www.downtowndelraybeach.com or call (561)
243-1077 for detailed information.
Groups are fine, if you’re into that, but if you want to dive
head first into an experience meant for only two eyes, the
solo way is a must. July is Social Wellness Month so to get
the best of both words, bring a friend to the Seven Solos Exhibition,
but go your own way once inside and meet on the other side when
you’re done. Seven Solos departs from the traditional group exhibitions
at the Cornell Art Museum by featuring only seven artists,
each of who created a unique, site-specific and immersive experience
in six galleries plus the Margaret Blume Atrium space. These
art installations have been created by seven artists who have had
their work shown in galleries and museums worldwide, and they
can now be seen at our Museum! Even though there are just seven
exhibits, each exhibit offers viewers an experience to not just see
it, but also to be in it and really experience it. It’s the classic quality
over quantity, and it’s too good to miss. The Museum hours are 10
a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and general admission is
$8 per person. Seven Solos is on view through October 6 but don’t
delay seeing it, just in case you love it so much that you want to go
back. The Cornell Art Museum is located at 51 N. Swinton Ave. Visit
www.oldschool.org or call (561) 243-7922 for more information.
Everyone loves independence, whether that be in relationships,
traveling or, super important, work. July is Independent
Retailers Month and is a reminder to shop local, encourage
out-of-the-box thinking and support your local indie makers
and shakers! The good people at the Cornell Art Museum are once
again hosting their 6X6 Exhibition & Sale, now back for its sixth
year. All artists, including aspiring, professional and hobbyists, are
invited to submit original works of any medium in a 6” x 6” format
for this all-inclusive art experience. All pieces will be shown at

the Spotlight Gallery feature exhibition for the entire month
of July, opening during Delray Beach’s First Friday Art Walk
on Friday, July 5, until the 6X6 Art Sale on Thursday, July 25.
All submitted artwork is sold for $30 each at the Sale in an
auction-style sale. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the Sale starts
promptly at 6:30 p.m. so get there early to scope out your
favorites. It’s a win, win, win because not only do you get to
support a local artist and score a sweet, original piece, all proceeds
benefit the Cornell Art Museum programming, which
comes full circle back to you and your neighbors. The Cornell
Art Museum is located at 51 N. Swinton Ave. Visit www.oldschool.org
or call (561) 243-7922 for more information.
We get it Florida, you like it hot. When the air conditioning
isn’t cutting it, and you can’t very well sit in
a pool all day, where are you supposed to turn? To
our good friend, Mr. Ice Cream, who’s always there to cool us
down from the inside out. Good news for us, there’s a new
creamy cowboy in town, so let’s all give two eager brain freezes
to Proper Ice Cream. July is National Ice Cream Month and
there is no better time to indulge in this frozen concoction.
Owner and New York native Rick Felberbaum has a seriously
delicious obsession with ice cream and not only making it the
“proper” way, but also having way too much fun with it. He
went to Ice Cream School at Penn State University, trained
in Italy, and worked alongside James Beard award-winning
chefs, all which helped him to fine-tune his technique and give
him the courage to crush the creamy boundaries and create
the ultimate gourmet ice cream. And that he did. He’s dishing
up caramelized fig and pistachio, passion fruit and salted caramel,
olive oil and rosemary, and cornbread and apple tartin,
and let’s not forget about the drool-worthy vegan ice creams.
Cups start at $6.50 but for a little bit more, enjoy a cone, waffle
bowl or sundae. If you still haven’t satiated your appetite, grab
a $9.99 pint to go home (and then directly into your mouth).
Proper Ice Cream is located at 75 S.E. Fourth Ave. Visit www.
propericecream.com or call (561) 359-3420 for more information
and current flavors.
Yep, it’s summertime. But hotter days just call for colder
drinks, right? The “Dog Days of Summer” are July 3 to
August 11 and are in full force. The ancient Romans
called the hottest, most humid days of summer “dog days”
because they associated the hottest days of summer with the
star Sirius. Sirius was known as the “Dog Star” because it was
the brightest start in the constellation Canis Major, and obviously
means serious sweaty business. However, there is no
need to fret the sweat and, instead, bottoms up with some of
the Avenue’s most refreshing cocktails. Brulé is a must with
their The Lady Rules (rosemary-infused Tanqueray, lemon,
lavender, rosemary brulé), and while you’re in Pineapple
Grove, stop in to El Camino for their oh-so-refreshing Strawberry-Basil
Margarita (Blanco tequila, strawberries, Cocchi
Rosa and Swank Farms basil). Next stop could be the Blue Anchor
for a couple pints of beer and some air conditioning, or
just make your way to Caffe Luna Rosa for a Peroni or glass of
white wine and views of the ocean. Show the Dog Days who
runs the show, one cool happy hour spot at a time. Visit www.
downtowndelraybeach.com or call (561) 243-1077 for a complete
list of all restaurant happenings and summer specials.
by Jennifer Ryan
Released July 2nd
If you like Jill Shalvis and Kristin Hannah,
you’ll love Jennifer Ryan’s exciting
new novel, where a young woman has the
chance to rebuild her life and become the
woman she was always meant to be…
An inheritance she never expected…
After serving time for a crime she didn’t
commit, Evangeline returns home to discover
her father left her solely responsible
for the family’s failing ranch, her
mother blames her for her father’s death,
and her brothers want her out of their
way. With her family’s future squarely on
her shoulders, she desperately searches
for ways to save their home—before they
lose everything.
A chance to right past mistakes… Her
only ally, Chris Chambers. The cop who
sent her away is positive she took the fall
for someone else. And if she helps him
track down the real criminals, he’ll clear
her record. But the closer Evangeline
and Chris get to exposing the truth—and
to each other—the deeper Evangeline is
drawn into a dangerous sting that will finally
bring her justice and pave the way
for a bright future.
The Wedding Party
by Jasmine Guillory
Released July 16th
The new exhilarating romance from The
New York Times bestselling author
of “The Proposal,” a Reese Witherspoon x
Hello Sunshine Book Club Pick!
Maddie and Theo have two things in
common:
1. Alexa is their best friend.
2. They hate each other.
After an “oops, we made a mistake”
night together, neither one can stop thinking
about the other. With Alexa’s wedding
rapidly approaching, Maddie and Theo
both share bridal party responsibilities
that require more interaction with each
other than they’re comfortable with. Underneath
the sharp barbs they toss at each
other is a simmering attraction that won’t
fade. It builds until they find themselves
sneaking off together to release some
tension when Alexa isn’t looking, agreeing
they would end it once the wedding is
over. When it’s suddenly pushed up and
they only have a few months left of secret
rendezvouses, they find themselves regretting
that the end is near. Two people
this different can’t possibly have a connection
other than the purely physical, right?
But as with any engagement with a
nemesis, there are unspoken rules that
must be abided by. First and foremost,
don’t fall in love.
Before I Disappear
by Danielle Stinson
Released July 23rd
Danielle Stinson’s “Before I Disappear”
is an action-packed Young Adult novel
where a young woman has to find her little
brother after her town disappears into
thin air.
Rose Montgomery parks her family’s
trailer in Fort Glory, Oregon with one goal:
to carve out a new life for herself and her
little brother, Charlie. They need a fresh
start for their family, and she thinks she’s
finally found it in a town where nobody
knows them.
But Rose’s plans come crashing down
when, in an instant, Fort Glory disappears
health & beauty | pain relief
By dr. john conde
Sciatica…
Exploring Cutting Edge Treatments and Addressing Misconceptions
A shocking 80% of all Americans will experience low back
pain at some point in their life. Its epidemic status continues
to grow and sufferers seek the most cutting edge approaches
to not only ensuring relief but also restoring function.
Quite often individuals may also develop associated thigh or
lower leg pain termed sciatica. The clinical term sciatica requires
clarification. Sciatica simply means “pain in the leg.”
It does not mean that the sciatic nerve has been “pinched.” In fact,
the sciatic nerve is not involved in most cases of thigh or gluteal
pain because it does not supply sensation from this area.
What Is The Cause Of Sciatica?
Sciatica can be caused by irritation or trauma to nerve roots
within the spinal canal or to peripheral nerves outside of the
canal anywhere from the pelvis to the lower leg. Space occupying
lesions within the spinal canal such as a bone spur,
disc herniation, congenitally narrow canal, infection, metastasis,
or mass can be the causative agent. Outside of the canal
we find the instigators to be a femur head fracture, incorrectly
placed intra-muscular injection, fixation
of the sacroiliac joint, and primary
bone cancer of the pelvis.
The two most common
and least diagnosed
causes are
facet joint syndrome
and piriformis contracture.
Facet joints
help to guide motion of
the spine letting us bend
forward and back and side
to side. They also relieve some
of the weight bearing burden of the
rest of the spine. Quite often they are
irritated due to an injury, arthritis, or misalignment.
This irritation produces referred
pain into the gluteal region and back of the
thigh.
Piriformis contracture occurs when the
piriformis muscle tightens and shortens for
a prolonged period of time compressing peripheral
nerves that provide sensation from
the gluteal region and thigh. The tightening
can occur due to repetitive use such as
is seen in runners and tennis players, injury, and misalignment
of the pelvis. The pain pattern is typically represented as severe
buttock pain and mild thigh pain.
How Is It Diagnosed?
A comprehensive neurological and orthopedic examination
should be performed checking reflexes, strength, sensation,
posture, gait, muscle tone, and evaluating
pain production from different positions. X-rays
help to narrow down the diagnosis. Further
imaging studies such as MRI and CT should
only be necessary after a lack of improvement
from conservative treatment or a progression
of symptoms.
Cutting Edge, ConservATive
Treatments
The treatment of sciatica is aimed at removing
the cause and restoring proper function to the
area. Cutting edge maneuvers such as eccentric
fast stretching and cross cord inhibition focus
on reducing tension in tightened and shortened
muscle and joint capsules. Chiropractic
manipulations focus on removing the irritation
and restoring proper motion in the
facet joints. Flexion-distraction therapy
helps to reposition some of the herniated
material and increase the overall health of
the disc. Neurophysiologic rehabilitation
of the part of the brain that directly controls
the tone of the deep spinal muscles
helps to create stability in the spine. Lastly,
a proper nutritional assessment should be
made to promote an anti-inflammatory diet.
health & beauty | dermatology
By dr. thomas c. balshi, m.d.
Acne Myths
We’ve all heard that chocolate,
burgers, fries, pizza and many
other (delicious) foods can
cause acne. We’ve also heard
that it’s all a myth. Many skin
care professionals however, will
tell you there is no link between
food and acne. They dismiss
the idea because so much of
the research is inconclusive.
But the latest research suggests that the food/acne relationship
is not a myth.
Refined Carbohydrates
Whereas fat-free diets were once a craze, carbohydrates have become
the new enemy within the last decade.
A study published in Archives of Dermatology shows strong evidence
that certain foods can cause breakouts. Noting that acne is
primarily a “Western” disease, researchers studied 1200 people in
Papua New Guinea and 115 people in Eastern Paraguay (people who
eat a diet of fresh plant foods, lean meat and virtually no processed
foods or refined sugars) and didn’t see a single pimple. NOT one!
Could it just be genetic luck? Unlikely. People with similar genetic
makeup living in Western countries, eating a diet rich in refined
carbs, saturated fats, and other processed foods, develop pimples.
Diets with a high glycemic index (basically, processed foods like
bread, pretzels and chips) are quickly broken down into sugar
causing insulin levels to spike, which in turn leads to increased
sebum production and clogged pores. Physicians recommend eating
plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean protein – and
steering clear of processed foods and sweets.
Dairy
Bad news… “milk does a body good” may be true for bones, but
“milk doesn’t do a complexion good.” Recent research on diet and
acne shows a link between milk consumption and breakouts.
Blame the hormones in dairy. Much of the milk we drink is produced
by pregnant cows and contain high levels of hormones that
can send oil glands into overdrive. Skim milk is even worse than
whole milk, partially because it lacks the estrogen found in whole
milk to offset the acne producing hormones. Dermatologists are
suggesting patients choose almond milk, rice milk, and coconut
milk instead of cow’s milk, if they have acne prone skin.
Soy
Breaking out with pimples around the mouth and along the jaw
line could be caused by tofu and other soy foods. There are natural
plant estrogens call phytoestrogens found in soybeans. They could
throw off hormones and lead to pimples. Soy derivatives can be
found in foods like veggie burgers or energy bars, so read labels
carefully if you think soy could be causing you pimples.
Fish Oil
Research suggests that the relative intake of omega-6 to omega-3
polyunsaturated fatty acids appears to be an important modulator
of inflammation. Omega-6 fatty acids appear to be pro-inflammatory
and can lead to inflammatory pimples. Omega-3 fatty acids
suppress inflammation. Eating foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids
or taking Fish Oil supplements with 1,000-2,000 mg/day of EPA
should benefit acne because they decrease inflammatory mediators,
improve insulin sensitivity and reduce testosterone levels.
Probiotics
Oral probiotics have been shown to improve acne in multiple
international studies. It appears that probiotics help in the digestive
process and can reduce not only gut inflammation but inflammation
in the skin as well. Acne patients who consumed a Lactobacillus-fermented
beverage for 12 weeks produced less sebum
(oily secretions) and had fewer acne lesions. Taking a supplement
or eating yogurt with live culture may help reduce the number of
acne lesions.
While diet alone may not responsible for all acne pimples,
evidence is very strong that diet significantly impacts the skin.
Dermatologists are now emphasizing dietary modifications in
conjunction with tried and true standard therapies for acne. A
nutritious diet that keeps one’s inside healthy will help also keep
the outward appearance looking good. On the other hand, a poor
diet will show up on your skin.
health & beauty | body beautiful
By ashley sica-de souza
Mind Makeover
If you are serious about transforming your
body and getting in the best possible shape
there’s a couple of things you will need to
do before you start your transformation.
You might think I’m going to say…plan your workouts, clean
out your pantry etc…but, not so fast! Before you can start
to transform your body you have to transform your mind.
Transforming your body is pretty much ALL mental. If your mind is
not in the right place your body will not follow suit. I’ve seen it time
and time again in the fitness industry. Your mindset is the ONLY
thing that separates you from having the body of your dreams. It’s
the difference of reaching goals or missing them. With that being
said, here are some things to consider before beginning your
“physical” transformation.
Start by identifying your current mindset. You
may feel frustrated or discouraged about your
current situation. You may feel you have tried
everything to change your body with no success.
You may feel defeated that you gain
and lose the same 10 pounds over and
over. Whatever your situation may be,
you need to realize what feelings you’re
having and why you’re having them.
Once you identify your current
mindset you’ll be able to move forward
with the right type of thinking.
Which brings me to my next
point, the power of positivity.
A positive mindset is a MUST.
We attract what we think about.
We become what we think
about. Positive thoughts yield
positive results. If you start your transformation
with doubts about your abilities or doubts about
hitting your goals you are already setting up for
failure. Know there will be obstacles along the
way, but you need to have the right mindset so
obstacles will not hinder you final result. Whatever
life throws you (life is full of curveballs)
you’ll be ready to handle any situation or bump
in the road. Too many people give up on their
goals because of circumstances totally within
their control. So be ready, willing and able to say
and do, “Whatever comes my way, I’ve got this
and I WILL do this!”
The next key to a successful transformation is that you have to
want it bad enough. If not, then EVERY excuse in the book will
stand in your way. “Oh, I didn’t have time to get to the gym. It was
just a couple extra slices of pizza.” Every person that wants it bad
enough, gets results. The clients that think they want to transform
but don’t have a yearning in their heart for change, don’t. It’s really
as simple as that. New clients will ask, “Do you think I have
what it takes to transform?” And the answer is always, “Yes, anyone
can transform as long as you want it bad enough!” When you want
something bad enough, your heart and head are into it and
with that your body will follow.
The last piece of advice is to leave fear of failure at the
door. There is nothing to be afraid of - the only way to
fail is by not even trying. Fear is often what holds us
back from going after the things we really want in
life. What should really scare you is the thought
of staying stagnant in your current situation.
Imagine living in a body you’re uncomfortable
with for the rest of your life…now
that’s scary! The only way you can
fail is by giving up. Understand
that transforming your body is
marathon not a sprint. Every
“body” is different and each person’s
transformation will take a
different amount of time. For some it
will be three months for some it will be one year.
Whatever it is for YOU, don’t ever give up. Failure will
never be an option.
Before embarking on your physical transformation,
make sure your mind is warmed up and
ready to run with you. Our mind is the most
powerful tool we have and it can either make
us or break us. Use it wisely and your transformation
will be a little easier than you think!
BEACHCOMBER ART DELRAY BEACH
Life Off The Avenue
By diane feen | Photos by melissa korman
Everyone who knows Debbie
Brookes knows that creativity just
oozes from every pore of her body.
Husband of the year Ed Brookes helps with hanging and heavy lifting
debbie brookes, owner, Saying good bye and thank you
That is why when she said she was retiring from creating oneof-a-kind
furnishings and museum quality items, some of us
scratched our heads and thought, really?
Wonder no more. Brookes has come back. And like an eagle or an
Olympic swimmer she has brought her A-game with her. The only difference
is locale. Her shop - Beachcomber Art Delray Beach - has moved
from Atlantic Avenue to a more historic location on Federal Highway.
Though she wafted into semi-retirement with family and friends
(and singlehandedly renovated her own bathroom), some of us
knew that her genius mind and creative progeny would eventually
need a showcase.
And many of us are grateful that Brookes has come back full force
with beautiful furniture and decorative items. And she has. There
are Sea Shelled embellished lamps with Mother of Pearl and colorful
Mermaid sculptures with shell shaped trays and majestic sea shells.
She’s continuing to design her signature sea shelled embellished
mirrors that show you (and Mother Nature) in a positive light.
For those who remember Beachcomber’s first incarnation, you
will appreciate her devotion to Taxidermy Mounted Fish in full regale
with sea shells of all style and shine. Her newest sea-faring creation
is a 5-foot fish with iridescent shells, white feathers and decorative
sea-shell embellishment. It sits on the wall in all its splendor
with the magnificence that Brookes has given it.
But she does that with everything in the store. “I walk into the
shop – that is also a working studio - and say, ‘What can I make
today.’ It’s a very spontaneous process. If I had to think about it – it
wouldn’t get done,” said the former hairdresser, florist and sculptor.
Brookes talks about her process in linear terms, but her creations
are as fluid as a case of diet soda. “It’s all about taking things
away and leaving others. It’s about balance and color. I see the true
potential in the naked landscape of things.”
She sure does. Sitting on a shelf in her new shop – that is reminiscent
of old Florida’s idealism and comfort – is a sea shelled Hobby
Horse with decorative saddle, stones, sequins and faux eye-lashes.
This piece could easily hang in a museum with its majestic adornment
created by Brookes’ genius in form and formation.
There are two adjacent rooms that make up this studio-retail
shop tucked away on Federal Highway just South of the Goodwill. In
the second room there are breathtaking Menorahs decorated with
blue and white luminescent shells. These sacred Hanukah candle
holders are rarely seen with this caliber of delight. Some are decorated
with blue limpets, oyster shells, rose quartz and precious sea
shells. There are also crystal Menorahs with amethyst, sea shells,
pearls and glass décor with geometric accents.
These one-of-a-kind Menorahs are not only glowing examples of
Brookes ability to delight, but they are precious to those who receive
them. “I was looking for a gift for a Jewish friend in New York
60 | juLY 2019 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

Customer Paul Wexler and Dana
during the holidays and I thought, ‘What do you give someone
who has everything?’ I ended up making him a Menorah and
his wife told me that he had tears in his eyes. She said, ‘No one
had ever made him such a special gift,’” said Brookes.
Beachcomber Art also has a full selection of Christmas Tree
decorations that capture the imagination and create joy by
mere sight. There are glittering star fish mermaids (and mermen)
and ornaments embellished with sea shells, pearls, lively
Santas and one-of-a-kind décor. “Our Christmas Tree ornaments
have become collectors’ items, people love them.”
There is also a stunning violin with colorful crystals, sea shells,
pearls and chamber nautilus on its distinguished wood frame.
The small table sized colorful Sea Shell embellished boxes are a
signature item for Brookes. There are also silver Angel candleholders
with sea shell adornment and lampshades that reflect
Mother Nature’s delight.
All this amazing artistry and decorative dynamics continues
to amaze customers. “Debbie is so talented and can make any
space beautiful. So glad she is back at it,” said Marie.
Kristine Marie agrees. “I can’t wait to come visit Debbie’s
new shop and fall in love again with her beautiful works of art
and heart.”
Brookes also sells clothing, jewelry and handbags in her
new shop. There are dresses, tunics and pants in flowing rayon
and silk in elegant neutrals and colorful prints. Her Tempo of
Paris collection features wide legged silk pants with side button
décor. There are also Sun-Block Tunics in assorted prints
and colors with fringe and off-the-shoulder styles.
If you want to experience the splendor of outer-worldly
creativity and museum-like décor items head over to Beachcomber
Art. You will be wowed by a visual rush of adrenaline
because of the genius creativity in your midst.
Unlimited Retreat Memberships
BY nicol jenkins | PHOTOS BY tom craig
Thermae Retreat is known
as a sanctuary for health
and wellness.
The Delray Beach day retreat provides an organic, wellness space
centered around relaxing, detoxing saunas and holistic therapies.
Now in their third year with continued growth, they have
added more services including Pilates, unique Treatments and an array
of Memberships for their guests. Recently, Thermae Retreat was
given an award from Trip Advisor, 4 years in a row, for best wellness
retreat, since 2016 (the Fort Lauderdale location opened in 2013).
Pilates is now offered in their sunroom by an innovative instructor,
who has been teaching for over a decade.
Gerri Dalzell is a 3rd generation classical Pilates instructor under
the Romana Kryzanowska line and today teaches a mix of classical
and contemporary Pilates. She is also a certified GYROTONIC® instructor
and GYROKINESIS® apprentice and offers the movement of
these methods. Owning a successful studio in Los Angeles, her work
has included elite athletes as well as clients who have experienced
cancer, osteoporosis and all ranging in ages 13 to 90.
The 30- or 60-minute sessions can be a combination of Pilates
and Power Plate with the movement of GYROTONIC®. Gerri’s
specialized training has tremendous benefits making the muscles
work twice as hard, breaking down cellulite, opening and strengthening
the body, building muscle and extension through increased
flexibility and movement.
A powerful routine offered is a half hour Pilates session with Gerri
followed by a half hour sauna session. “The sauna is detoxing the body,
calming inflammation, and burning up to 500 calories, helping to alleviate
sore muscles, and it is a cardiovascular workout as if you are jogging.
Pilates is mix of strength, flexibility, balance and coordination training,”
said Kelly Doyle, owner of Thermae Retreat, adding, “I owned Pilates
studios for 15 years and know the benefits. It is one of the best workouts
for the body and saunas are exceptional for both mind and body.”
Thermae Retreat has also added new Memberships for their guests.
“We evolve in our treatments and offerings depending on our guests
needs,” says Kelly, “The whole reason we exist is to give people a place
to come and find stillness, not only detoxing the body but also the
mind.” The Unlimited Membership, starts at $159 a month, and allow
members to come as often as they want and stay as long as they want;
this membership includes infrared sauna with chromotherapy (light
therapy), hot stone Finnish sauna, meditation space to find stillness,
equipment to break down cellulite and move the lymphatic system,
a relaxing outdoor garden deck with lounges, rinsing showers under
a mango tree, a meditation swing and cold bucket pour for contrast
therapy which strengthens blood vessels and boosts the immune system.
There is also 10 percent off any treatments as a member, and
members are allowed to bring one friend a month at no charge!
Thermae’s popular Awaken Membership offers a treatment every
month, choice of a custom massage, organic facial, full body scrub or
detox clay experience, at only $259 a month.
64 | juLY 2019 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

Visitors can also enjoy the retreat with the Travelers Refuge
Membership. Starting at $300 it includes 10 retreat day visits
that are good for 6 months.
The Pro Membership is for Pilates clients; as a client just pay
$99 (bring your own towels) or $119 (with towels) and includes
full membership benefits.
The Intro Program offers two private 30-minute Pilates sessions,
and two sauna retreat sessions for $99. This allows beginners
to get their feet wet by feeling the difference in their body
and seeing the difference in the health of their skin.
Thermae Retreat looks at each person individually and has
guides that assist you each time you come in. Therapists offer energy
work such as massages with sound baths which take a traditional
massage to the next level, organic facials which strengthen
the skin on a cellular level and detoxing clays to remove the everyday
toxins we take in daily. Shaman Debra Kelly will be offering
live gong ceremonies and instructional videos such as teaching
how to make your own altar at home starting in August, and
Thermae Custom Meditations for each chakra are now available
on the website for download with new meditations introduced
each month. They also started infusing Homeostasis® CBD oils
and salves into a few of their massages called Homeostasis Massage
which has tremendous benefits such as easing anxiety and
pain and boosting heart health. For those with cancer, it may even
provide a natural alternative for symptom relief.
Regular treatments include the full sauna retreat and they ask
that you give yourself a 2 to 4 hour window of time to experience
and find stillness. “It is in this stillness that you find clarity, and
that clarity allows you to see new paths and put space around
things that appear to be ‘problems’ and allow you to see that
they are just challenges that help us grow,” says Kelly.
Besides the many retreat offerings, Pilates and saunas, Thermae
Retreat has also become a gathering place for the community
to celebrate special occasions. Whether it is a birthday or
bridal shower, a group event or a bachelorette celebration, the
Delray Beach day retreat is a unique setting to celebrate the
Thermae Way. Guests will be treated with fresh juices, delicious
organic light bites, herbal teas, saunas and holistic treatments all
in a beautiful setting.
STUART & SHELBY
Building Homes And
Recreating Greatness On Land
By diane feen
Photos by Shelby Halberg, Blank Frame Films
To whom much is given
much is expected.
Chuck Halberg knows
this philosophical truth.
Custom home in Delray Beach
Custom home in Boca Raton
That is why he has spent so much of his time giving back to
communities and non-profit organizations that need his expertise
and passion.
As owner and founder of Stuart & Shelby Development in Delray,
Chuck is in a position to bid on projects that benefit underserved
communities in our midst. Just recently he started work on a 14-
unit townhouse development in Lake Worth that benefits Adopt-A-
Family recipients. There is also a community building included in
the project that will be used for educational and support services.
Stuart & Shelby is also working on attainable housing for the
Delray Beach Community Land Trust in the South West neighborhood
of Delray. They currently have two homes under construction
with three more in the permit process. The Land Trust was recently
awarded 10 more homes by the Delray Beach CRA, which will be a
godsend for those in need of affordable housing.
“I have a passion for providing quality attainable housing for first
time home buyers and the underserved population,” said Chuck,
who started his company in 2006.
Stuart & Shelby grew exponentially from a small company to one
of substantial standing in the community. In addition to attainable
housing, Stuart & Shelby has numerous custom home projects currently
under construction, as well as home and condo renovations.
One thing for sure – clients know that calling Stuart & Shelby is
a sure thing. “Our job is finished, and we want to let you know how
happy we are with the end result. The quality of the work is beautiful,
our apartment is transformed into the open and airy space
we knew it could be. We used your recommended vendors and had
good experiences. You were always fair in all our dealings and you
have a very good team,” said Barbara and Bod Lewis.
Honesty and consistency have catapulted Stuart & Shelby to become
a “go-to” builder for non-profits and private homes. “We go the
extra mile to make sure clients are satisfied, and their needs are met.”
Chuck started his business the good old- fashion way – hard
work and dedication. He worked for Holtzman & Silverman Construction
in Michigan and was transferred to Florida in 1980. He
was a construction manager for Arvida Homes in Weston in the
mid-90s, and in 1997 became Vice President of construction for
the Holiday Organization (a large builder in Long Island). For Holiday
he developed and built six communities in Palm Beach County
with over 700 units.
In 2006 Chuck started Stuart & Shelby (named after his two
sons). “Our dedication and commitment to clients and their projects
is backed by an excellent record of on-time and on-budget
completion. Our loyalty to them does not end when their project is
complete, it continues into the future.”
Stuart & Shelby is also very involved in charitable projects that
benefit communities. They just finished a renovation project for the
Arts Garage in Delray Beach. They created an office for the CEO,
accounting, a box office, classroom and a service bar. Everyone is
thrilled with the new additions to this popular entertainment venue
in downtown Delray.
“Chuck’s generosity in our community is inspirational. He and Pam
believe so much in giving back, and Arts Garage benefits tremendously
from his vision and passion for the arts and impact they have on
community. Our new build-out has changed the face of Arts Garage.
The new offices and classroom he built for us really took us to the next
level,” said Marjorie Waldo, President and CEO of Arts Garage.
Another terrific charitable project recently completed by Stuart
& Shelby is the construction of a “Mobil Entrepreneurship & Leadership
Training” Bus for an educational program called M.E.L.T. The
bus has state-of-the-art interior complexity like comfortable seating
and chairs, a large flat screen TV, cabinets, vinyl plank flooring
and computer seating. M.E.L.T. is a non-profit initiative of GBDC
Entrepreneurship Institute (gbdcei.org) that educates and helps
improve the socio-economic conditions of communities.
It is his giving nature that has been recognized by others in the
community. He was chosen Business Person of the Year (2010-
2011) and Stuart & Shelby was Business of the year (2013-2014)
by the Delray Chamber of Commerce. Chuck also won the Ken Ellingsworth
Community Service Award three times.
Chuck has also been in the forefront of organizations that help
non-profits and those in need. He is Chairman of the Arts Garage,
co-founder of Impact 100 for Men (raising money for non-profits)
and the Delray Beach Initiative (raising money for under-served
children). He is also a supporter of Delray Police and Fire (especially
the annual Thanksgiving Day dinner for all emergency personal
working. “It’s a real community event,” he said.
To know Chuck is to know his other half, Pam Halberg. After a
23-year career in accounting at an agricultural farm, she switched
careers and went into real estate. She not only works at Stuart &
Shelby, but is a realtor at Signature International Premier Properties.
Pam is in the Million Dollar Guild and received the Certified
Luxury Home Marketing Specialist designation, along with Accredited
Buyers Representative.
Their son with his company Blank Frame Films, Shelby Halberg
is also part of the Stuart & Shelby umbrella. He is a documentary
filmmaker, photographer and a licensed drone pilot who takes pictures
of Stuart & Shelby’s projects as well as other clients. Shelby’s
wife Lauren also works for the company as an office assistant
Both Chuck and Pam are big supporters of Delray Beach nonprofit
organizations and events. You can see them around town
supporting different venues and causes – with a philanthropic bend
that sways toward the highest of intentions.
THE GIRLS, THE BOYS, GRAMMA’S BAKERY AND BAMBINI’S
Fun – Food – Fanfare
By Diane Feen | Photos by tom craig
There is a saying that ecstasy has no penthouse. And if you’ve been
to The Boys, The Girls, Gramma’s Bakery and their Italian restaurant
Bambini’s you know that the sky is the limit at this magical place.
Where else can you find exotic and local produce and
cheeses from all corners of the world? Known as the
Mecca of Produce, The Boys is the Disney of Culinary
Creations run by a dedicated family (of five generations) that melds
their passion and experience together as one harmonic enterprise.
“We have been in the food business for five generations. It started
with our great grandfather in New York and continues today. We’re
a family business – which is unusual to find. We all work together
and take pride in our fresh produce, cheese, fish, prepared dishes,
breads, luscious desserts, pizza and more. We make sure we bring
the most diverse foods from our table to yours. It’s definitely a magical
culinary experience.”
The Boys is indeed a heralded place to stock up on fresh produce,
meat, fish, poultry, organic produce, cheeses and more. It’s one
of the few family-owned and operated food businesses that takes
their mission seriously so you can indulge in the freshest, finest and
most comprehensive selection of fine foods from around the globe.
The produce is so fresh it feels like it’s straight off the farm. The
fish is often brought in by local fisherman (depending on the season)
making sure the selection is the finest around.
Their wonderful prepared meals are made with fresh ingredients
and savory sauces. If you’re tired and want a home-cooked
meal, pick up a few of their homemade prepared dishes. “All you
have to do is get a loaf of bread, a bottle of wine and you’ll be transported
to Tuscany.”
If you head South, you’ll come face to face with one of the most
glorious hidden treasures in Delray Beach - The Girls. This old-fashioned
ice cream parlor, kitsch retailer and upbeat general store is
designed to pique your curiosity about the past, while satisfying
your cravings in the present.
The homemade ice cream will tantalize your taste buds. Their
Banana Split is a heavenly creation with fresh pineapple, strawberries,
banana, wet walnuts, hot fudge, whipped cream and nuts.
You’ll think that heaven and earth collided while eating it.
Just outside in back is a Garden of Eden. The lush surroundings
include waterfalls, stone benches, petting zoo, authentic animal
habitats, picnic benches and a Zen Zone. There are swans, baby
pigs, donkeys, turtles, bunnies and exotic birds that often say
“hello” when they’re in the mood. It’s a veritable kaleidoscope of
Mother Nature’s finest creations with the ingenuity and meticulous
care of its owners.
The petting zoo at The Girls is a wonder-filled place where
children can feed baby goats and marvel at the goodness of nature.
It’s also a place where kids like Joseph Snell can go mining
(with his grandmother Lyn Mick) and find gemstones in a bag of
earthly goodies.
“We are a retirement home for exotic beautiful birds,” said John
Palermo, son of the founder of this compound of culinary greatness.
“We love giving back to the community because we are a big
family, and we honor all other families. We are known as the Disney
of Delray. The Girls is a magical place where you can walk around in
nature with no hint of the city. Spend time with your family among
the trees and waterfalls, have a meal outside and spend a few hours
of quality time together.”
Inside The Girls is their Italian eatery called Bambini’s. You can
get carry-out or dine in amidst the splendor of the past. Nostalgia is
everywhere. From the 50s photos to dangling lunch boxes, Tiffany
lamps, hula hoops, roller skates, a Prop Plane, bicycles and a table
where Marilyn and Elvis hold court. If Kitsch was a territory, this
would be its capital.
Bambini’s has fresh luscious Italian specialties. Their homemade
pizzas are terrific. The crust is crispy yet light, the cheese, sauce
and vegetables are so fresh it’s like being in New York. They also
have entrees such as Spaghetti with Mamas Meatballs, Penne Alla
Vodka and Meat Lasagna to name a few. Their old-fashioned New
York style heroes are not to be missed, made with the best bread
in town! Their exotic salads and appetizers are bountiful and fresh.
The Boys legacy continues three doors down at the corner of
“Oh my Gosh and I can’t believe it.” Gramma’s Bakery is a tempting
place that will test your willpower to not buy one of everything.
Their breads are fresh and fantastic - from Cinnamon Multi-grain
Raisin with cranberry and walnuts to Quinoa 7-Grain bread, and
dozens of other homemade rolls, scones and doughy delights.
Gramma’s butter cookies, cakes, homemade apple and key lime
pies and an array of other baked goods (and goodies) are dreamy
and divine. Everything is made fresh daily and is intoxicating.
There is also a hydroponic farm where produce is grown during
its rightful season. The Boys, The Girls, Bambini’s and Gramma’s
Bakery are the perfect antidote for whatever ails you. It’s a sweet
smile in the face of life and a swift pick-me-up.
We applaud the owners – and their family – for their dedication
to culinary perfection. The Boys Market, Gramma’s Bakery, The
Girls and Bambini’s will fill you with anticipation and joyful elation.
Leadership Delray Graduation:
Leadership Delray Tells All
“Management is doing things right; leadership
is doing the right things.” – Peter Drucker
BY Tiffany Mazer, Greater Delray Beach
Chamber of Commerce
Leadership Delray is an annual program hosted by The Greater
Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce. The 2018-2019 Leadership
Delray Graduation: “Leadership Delray Tells All” took
place on June 19, 2019 at the Delray Beach Marriott. Graduates
presented their first-hand experiences in a lively, “tell all” behindthe-scenes
forum.
Each year, Leadership Delray kicks off with a Team Building session
in the fall. Then, once a month, the Leadership Delray classmates
spend the day immersed in one of the facets of our community.
Students continually cite that one of the best outcomes of this
program is the lifelong friends and allies they create.
Suzanne Spencer led the course for the Chamber this past year
and took it to a whole new level. She explains, “Leadership Delray
ultimately is about community engagement. Civic engagement is
achieved when future leaders become aware citizens; understand
what it means to be a responsible citizen; grow into an involved
citizen, and transform to become a social justice citizen. Leadership
Delray develops leaders who answer a call to action and work for
the betterment of our Village by the Sea!”.
Delray City Attorney
Lynn Gelin is in a class of her own. The city
attorney of Delray Beach dances to her own beat
in rhythm with the city and those who protect it.
Hired as the Assistant City Attorney, Gelin became the Delray
Beach City Attorney when the position became available
this year.
Ascending to higher ranks comes naturally to this maverick
law scholar. She became the youngest Chief Assistant Public Defender
for Broward County at the age of 33. After three months
as Misdemeanor lawyer she was promoted to Felony attorney.
It doesn’t take much imagination to understand how this spitfire
attorney – and passionate team player – always seems to
lead. She is smart as a whip, is righteous yet humble about her
profession and has been mentored by great minds that have influenced
her.
But Gelin, like most great leaders – always pays it forward. She
was a mentor for many young attorneys as a training attorney
in Broward. She held mock courtroom trials and taught lawyers
how to excel at the profession of law.
And like everything else Gelin does, she rose to the occasion
with sparklers. “Lynn is a good mentor and friend who helped
shape who I am as an attorney. It’s one thing to be a great lawyer
but another to be a great teacher – Lynn exemplifies them both,”
said Joshua Rydell, City Commissioner in Coconut Creek.
Gelin does more than teach and lead by example, she gives of
her time and temperament to others. Though she is the treasurer
of the PTA at her children’s school, her role of lawyer is not just
a day job, it’s a passion.
“I love case law, at night when I can’t sleep, I look up cases
and statutes and read about them. I love finding that needle in a
haystack and educating myself.”
That love of education was fostered early on in her life. Her
parents (Esther and Carlos) promoted education and were always
supportive of their daughters’ endeavors. “My mother always
told me that I could do anything I wanted.”
But to find out what she wanted Gelin first had to discover
what she didn’t want. “I wanted to be a doctor at first. I volunteered
at a hospital in Fort Lauderdale, and my sister Leslie (who
I adored) was a nurse.”
A medical career was ruled out on day one when Gelin knew in
her heart it wasn’t for her. Instead she got an accounting degree
at Boston College and planned to become a tax lawyer. Before
starting law school she did a summer internship in the Broward
County Public Defender’s office. “I fell in love with everything
about the job. I loved the court room, dealing with clients and
the camaraderie. I also loved helping people who were having a
difficult time in their life.”
That passion for helping the underdog lasted quite a long
time. She interned every summer (while in law school) and
was probably one of the longest lasting interns in the Broward
County Public Defender’s office.
After graduating law school, Gelin immediately started her
career at the Broward Public Defender’s office. She was sworn
in on September 10, 2001 and hit the pavement running. At the
pinnacle of her career as Chief Assistant Public Defender for the
County Court Division she supervised 20 lawyers and often juggled
50 of her own cases simultaneously.
But to those who know her, that’s typical for this over-achiever
with the spunky “can do” attitude. “Lynn is an exceptionally
insightful attorney with a real knowledge and zeal for the law.
She’s a positive person with a sense of humor who’s caring and
considerate,” said Scott Singer, Mayor of Boca Raton.
After spending 19 years in the Broward County Public Defender’s
office (four as an intern and 15 as an attorney) Gelin got the itch to
move closer to her home (in Boca Raton). When she saw that Delray
Beach was looking for an assistant city attorney the lights flickered
in her imagination. “I saw a job alert and said to myself, ‘oh my God,
this is my job.’ It is the only job I have ever applied for.”
Gelin is candid that her job was to make her boss look good,
and it wasn’t about her (“I have no ego”). She leads by example
with as much guts and truth as possible. “I love fighting for
things and helping people. Every day is a challenge - you have to
make tough decisions. Luckily, we have a staff that is not afraid
to do what’s best for the city.”
Gelin’s job is to provide legal guidance about numerous issues
that come up each day. She likens it to “trial by fire.” But she sees
the bright side so often you would think she needs to wear sunglasses
inside her office. “This job teaches me how to think on
my feet quickly. I have to answer questions all the time, but If I
don’t have the answers, I can get them.”
Gelin is secure enough to consult with subject matter experts
when necessary, but she isn’t worried about how others see her.
“You have to be proactive with the commissioners, and with your
position. I’m OK with being the bad guy.”
But to those who know Gelin she is rarely the bad guy (or gal).
“Lynn Gelin has demonstrated she is capable of bold moves the
City must make in order to move forward. She is courageous and
doesn’t back away from the truth under pressure. I trust in her
legal guidance to help steer our growing City,” said Shelly Patrolia,
Mayor of Delray Beach.
Gelin is married to lawyer Bill Gelin and has two children, seven-year-old
Alex and six-year-old Olivia.
To some people a career is just a job – but to Gelin it’s all encompassing.
“When you love what you do, it’s not like work. I
come here and love figuring things out and helping people. From
day one I knew this is where I was meant to be.”
Aren’t we lucky!
SCUOLA VECCHIA
Culinary Passion And Authenticity
Scuola Vecchia is in the rarified
world of singularity. It’s one of the
only Napolitano pizza restaurants
in Delray, and one of the few with
roots that date back 200 years.
88 | july 2019 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
Fettuccini Bolognese
Pistacchio Pesto Esalsiccia
But luckily you don’t have to fly to Naples, Italy to indulge in this
delicate Italian passion. A lot of people know this – hence the
reason there was a line out the door on a recent Saturday night.
Their slow and steady rise to Napolitano nirvana is due to the
passion and consistency of its founders Sharon and Shaun Aloisio.
Sharon was trained in the Neapolitan-style of pizza making from
world-renowned Chef and Master Pizzaiuoli, Roberto Caporuscio.
She stayed true to its namesake (and ingredients) and soon people
began to appreciate the subtlety of its divinity.
The pizza is lighter than traditional Italian pizza and the dough is
ground slowly without additives and seven different wheats from
around the world. Sharon knows these statistics because she lives and
breathes life as a Neapolitan expert and chef. Her son Shaun has adopted
this Naples art of pizza making as though it was his birthright.
And perhaps it is. When Shaun makes one of his amazing Pizzas
(like the Pizza con Pistachio e Salaccia) delight congeals with greatness.
The Pistachio Pesto, Sausage and Smoked Buffalo Mozzarella
on thin homemade pizza dough is unparalleled.
Part of the totality of this mouthwatering marvel is enhanced by
their wood burning oven made of volcanic stone. Shipped to Delray
from Naples, it heats to 1000 degrees and seals in the moisture and
flavors that are so delicately ordained. They also use Caputo flour (with
no additives) for the pizza dough that is low in fat and light as a feather.
Add that to the imported Italian San Marzano tomato sauce and you

Burrata Al Tartufo
Cannoli Ricotta Cheese Cake
have a pizza that seduces the senses. “The Pizza con Pistachio e Salaccia
just blew me away. There is so much flavor in the sausage with
pesto that you can taste the authenticity and passion that went into
the dish,” said Bob Foster, who just returned from a bike trip in Italy.
Others agree. “We have been to Scuola Vecchia many times and it
never disappoints. Sharon and her team are fantastic and make you
feel right at home. Great service, great food and great atmosphere.
A must try when you are in Delray Beach. Authentic pizza-so good!”
Scuola Vecchia has become so popular that their Neapolitanstyle
roots on the Avenue have become legend. They are hailed as
the best pizza in Florida by The Daily Meal (and Trip Advisor), and
are lovingly referred to in the Book, “Where to Eat Pizza as “some
of the most stellar pizza this side of Naples, and frankly anywhere.”
With all this fanfare comes dishes that are bursting with flavor
and surprises. They recently added a special appetizer – Truffle
Burrata. This subtle, yet stupendous dish is made with homemade
mozzarella accented with Italian truffle oil. Grape tomatoes and
baby arugula co-mingle with this cheesy delicacy and Homemade
Focaccia bread comes on the side.
“In Italy it’s about food, family and wine,” said Sharon, who with
Shaun have been a fixture on Atlantic Avenue for eight years. Their
small yet gracious blue and white pizza restaurant with homemade
pasta dishes and desserts to swoon over – has come full circle. At
first people didn’t understand the strict adherence to authenticity
and subtle flavoring. But it was only a matter of time before everyone
realized that this Naples tradition is indeed a culinary treasure.
“People are more appreciative of what we do now. They finally
understand that it’s about quality over quantity. We use a homemade
old school way of making dough and we make the cheese inhouse
with Italian oils - rosemary, garlic, lemon and basil oil,” said
Shaun, who is as good a father as a pizza maker.
Sharon, on the other hand, is the devoted and dedicated creator
of all things pasta. You know when you’re eating her freshly made
Fettuccine Bolognese or Lasagna de Carne (meat lasagna). You get
that seasonal high just like you feel when walking on the pristine
beach first thing in the morning.
It is the beach that charmed Sharon – and inspired her to create
one of their favorite pizzas – The Scuola Vecchia. This homemade
white pizza is made with fresh mozzarella, shrimp, arugula and
grape tomatoes. “Our pizza is very light, and we make the mozzarella
cheese on the premises. We’re so close to the beach I felt we
needed a pizza with seafood from the Gulf Coast.”
There is another ingredient to the success of this family business,
and its tradition. Maybe not a tradition in the US anymore, but in
Europe it’s a de rigueur. “People like the fact that the owner is on
site and that the food is homemade not frozen. Everything here is
made from scratch,” said Sharon.
The food is so coveted that one customer waited over 45 minutes
for the fresh meatballs to arrive at her table. That is also the reason
Scuola Vecchia has regular customers who come every week (and
sometimes every day) for homemade eggplant parmesan or a Regina
Margherita Pizza.
They have a full selection of salads – the Caprese with handmade
mozzarella, tomatoes, extra virgin olive oil and basil, and Girella, with
homemade mozzarella stuffed with eggplant, zucchini, prosciutto di
parma and salad. For those with dietary restrictions they offer Gluten-free
pizza made with fresh homemade gluten-free flour.
Sometimes the best things in life come last – especially if you have
a sweet tooth. Sharon’s homemade Tiramisu is indeed a wonderful
thing. The softness and sweetness of its delicate flavors dance delightfully
in your mouth. They also have homemade ricotta cannoli
chocolate chip cheesecake and locally made Italian gelato.
Though Sharon and Shaun are not artists in a classic sense their
culinary artistry is evident in everything they do. The pizza making
is precise and steeped in tradition, and their pastas, paninis, salads
and desserts are what dreams are made of.
BY Bill Piechocki and Dr. Diane Sudduth, DVM
What’s Wrong with Our Water
and Does it Affect Our Pets???
Have you noticed all the major water companies are introducing
newly flavored water? Why is this? Water is one
of the keys to homeostasis, the total balance of the body.
If you do not drink tap water, why would your pet? More importantly,
why do we NOT want to drink it? Why does our body
identify bad water and reject it? Do our pets do the same?
Our senses are in no way as keen as our companion pets due
to generations of people accepting chemicals into our food chain.
Our companion pets are now compromised with kidney, liver and
urinary issues that they never had before. In addition to the processed
foods and drugs that they are constantly exposed to; could
it also be that our water is so bad these animals with their extremely
sensitive instincts already sense that it is tainted?
Let’s follow our pets as they go through their day. After a heavy
rain we take our pets out for their walk. As they explore, they sniff
everything including every puddle. They ignore most of them as
they ponder. Why is that? It is not about thirst, but about looking
for nutrients. You get to puddle number 15 or so and they start to
drink. Subsequently you command your pet to not drink the dirty
water. What made this puddle different? The primitive instinct of
your pet is looking to balance their body. They are really looking
for specific nutritional elements. Animals know this instinctively.
So what water do you offer your pet? Is it tap water, regular
filtered bottle water, distilled dead water or even filtered spring
water? Did you ever consider what they drink in nature are
herbal teas?
You never thought of it that way but that is essentially what
they do. Much of the water they would drink in nature is from
puddles. That water is infused with the minerals and botanical
matter where it is sitting. Therefore, after a rain, they smell every
puddle they see but will only drink from specific ones. To replicate
this natural phenomenon, place several water stations with
various flavored waters and let your pet choose the right one.
You can infuse water by making an actual conventional tea or
by just adding small amounts of herbal powders and letting them
infuse naturally. Some favorites are spirulina, chlorella, ginger,
turmeric and dandelion.
We want you know that the water humans supply is secondary
to where our pets’ hydration should be coming from. In nature
the bulk of their water comes directly from their diet. For
our carnivore pets, that should be a raw, meaty diet. The water in
these foods is structured water, which means it contains the electrolytes,
enzymes and other components. This living water, much
like pure natural rain or spring water contains ions that facilitate
utilization on the cellular level. A raw, meaty diet contains around
70% of this much needed structured water keeping our pets naturally
hydrated. When fed this way, external water consumption
and urination is greatly reduced. These structured forms of hydration
are protective of liver and kidney function as well.
Give your pet the choices they truly need for proper naturally
balanced hydration and nutrition, so they can maintain the utmost
health.
