Grammy Award-nominated, multi-platinum-selling
breakout hit “Call Me Maybe”—singer/
songwriter Carly Rae Jepsen brings new depth
and dimension to her undeniably hooky but
heart-driven breed of pop music. With a sense
of pure feeling and passion inspired by classic
pop records of the early ‘80s, E·MO·TION finds
Jepsen conjuring up pop’s most thrilling paradoxes
and delivering songs both carefree and introspective,
tender and bold, sensitive and self-assured.
“The one intention I had going into making
this album was to take my time and create
something I was really proud of—something that
showed sides of me that I hadn’t ever revealed in
my music before,” Jepsen says.
Considered to be the first Latina
Supermodel, adorned on the covers
of Vogue, Bazaar and Marie Claire,
Patricia Velasquez has moved on to
master many other industries. She’s
been in dozens of feature films such
as “The Mummy”, “Le Jaguar” and
“Zapata” as well as guest starred
in many TV shows. She is also a
producer, published author and an
activist who has traveled the globe
since leaving her native Venezuela and
settled in the City of Angels.
Modesty aside, how would you describe
yourself?
Persistent. Impatient. Loving.
What is your connection to West
Hollywood and what do you like about
it?
When I moved to Los Angeles I was in
a different part of town. I felt isolated
and couldn’t think of anything else
other than leaving this city and going
back to NY. As I started visiting
friends in Weho I realized I was in the
wrong area and need it to be here.
Now I love LA.
How is Los Angeles different than other major
cities?
We are in the center of town in Weho
but also get to have quality of life.
Nature surrounds us in LA. It takes
a little time to get used to it but once
you do it’s hard being anywhere else.
It’s that combination of culture and
nature that makes a LA so desirable.
Specially now. LA is now the place to
be.
Secretary applauds successful
MISSION Act roll-out
On June 6, the Department of
Veterans Affairs kicked off an
important piece of the MISSION
Act that lets our Veterans use
community care providers across
America.
Act got the attention of the White House
and President Trump, who praised the VA’s
dedicated staff for its performance.
I’m proud to work with so many talented
people at the VA. I thank you for all you’ve
done to make this new system a reality for
our wounded warriors, and its immediate
use shows Veterans are also thankful.
This victory belongs to you, and to the
growing number of Veterans the MISSION
Act will help in the months and years.
Thank you again, and congratulations.
Robert Wilkie
It’s an historic change – and it is working
because of you!
On the very first day, more than 44,000
Veterans used the Decision Support Tool
to examine whether they are eligible for
community care. In the early stages of the
program, we’re seeing only minor technical
issues that are being resolved quickly once
they’re spotted.
We also launched a new urgent care
network that is now being accessed by
nearly 300 Veterans a day.
The smooth roll-out of a major program
is never a sure thing in Washington, D.C.
But your excellent work on the MISSION
The Honorable Robert L. Wilkie was sworn
in to serve as Secretary of Veterans Affairs
on July 30, 2018. He also served as the
Acting Secretary of Veterans Affairs from
March 28, 2018 to May 29, 2018.
Before confirmation as VA Secretary, Mr.
Wilkie served Secretary James Mattis as his
Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel
and Readiness—the principal advisor to
the Secretary and Deputy Secretary of
Defense for Total Force Management as it
relates to readiness, National Guard and
Reserve component affairs, health affairs,
training, and personnel requirements and
management, including equal opportunity,
morale, welfare, recreation, and the quality
of life for military families.
Has life been different for you since coming
out?
Yes. I am not alone anymore. I belong
to a community of people like me that
supports what I do. It’s wonderful.
What does your average day look like?
My days are all very different from
each other. I travel a lot. Depends
if I’m working on my Foundation
wayuutaya.org or if I’m shooting
something. I try to spend time on my
own every day. Just a little so I can
get my thoughts in place. If not I get
in a bad mood and feel all over the
place.
Biggest turn-on?
Knowledge for sure. Makes me melt
What’s your favorite charity or cause?
My own. www.wayuutaya.org
I love Rioja wine ;)
The Wayúu Tayá Foundation is
Who wants to be a Census taker?
Now that Nixon's men seem to be back
in the White house and the president's
daughter is acting like she was secretary of
state, who can you trust? These days, when
I go to the polls, I look at the workers and
wonder if these people are on the side of
democracy. I mean, I don't know them or
their family. I don't even know their name.
I am sure they are all upstanding pillars of
the community. But we have border agents
and staff willingly and happily denying
soap to children. What sane kid is going to
complain about not having to bathe? But
as the custodians of children, that should
be their job. I cannot imagine DCS parents
denying soap and toiletries to these kids!
Now we might see deep state Trump
supporters looking for ways to get people
deported. Census takers are all under the
direction of Trump. That is why Wilber
Ross talks for Steven Dillingham. BTW
Who denied Wilber a nose trimmer?
But it you want to be a Census taker,
you will have to answer some interview
questions. Like "My previous supervisors
(or teachers, if not previously employed)
would likely describe my self-discipline
as: Two of the answers include. "Below
average" and "I Do not know" Well.... I...?
God help us all.
PRIDE MONTH AND GEORGE SEGAL
ARTIST OF THE STONEWALL INN
SCULPTURES
June was National Pride Month
throughout the world. One of the
primary events that initiated Pride
was the Stone Wall riots in New York
City This past month was the 50th
anniversary of that event. A brief
review of the Stone Wall riot takes
us to Christopher Street in New
York City the location of Stonewall
Inn. The Stonewall Inn was build
in the late 1800's. During the1950's
it was known as the Stonewall Inn
Restaurant. In 1966 it was renovated
to become the Stonewall Inn a bar
and dance club that catered to the
LGBT community of the surrounding
Greenwich Village.
AdamsArtExpose’
movement in the United States..
George Segal was a prominent
artist of the early 20th century. He
lived and worked on a farm in
South Brunswick, New Jersey. His
paintings and sculptures were gaining
a reputation and he had a one man
show in 1956 at Hansa Gallery in New
York. He was from a Jewish family
of which most of the family members
had perished in the Holocaust during
the Hitler terror. Much of Segals
sculpture work is done with plaster
cast fabric used on humans for broken
bones etc. He cast whole figures
using the material. This might more
commonly be used as the casting
material to cast the figure inside,
however his sculptures used the
outside of the cast as the subject of
the sculpture. He admitted himself
that the use of the bandage material
to make a cast of a full human body
was breaking all the rules of fine
art. He indicated the the bandaging
resembled all of the problems from
the depression years to World War
II and finally the Holocaust and the
movement to respect LGBTQ people
as equals.
The two sculptures placed in
Christopher Park represent the
On June 28, 1969 the New York
Police raided the bar. In New York
there had been a constant struggle to
legitimatize gay bars and stop police
harassment of gay establishments
of which bars had become one of
the primary meeting places for gay
people. This raid set off a protest
that culminated during July of 1969
with a march to the site. This set off a
series of events that are now credited
24 with IF the YOU beginning LIKE US, PLEASE of the LIKE gay US rights ON FACEBOOK: legitimacy DESERTDAILYGUIDE of gay and lesbian men
and women as people with the same
rights as anyone else. One sculpture is
of two standing men with arms around
each other. The companion sculpture is
of two women sitting on a park bench
talking intently, one figure has her hand
on the hand of the other. The sculptures
are cast in bronze and are finished in a
white finish that resembles the plaster
bandages of the original casting.
This site at Christopher Street Park
with the Stone Wall Inn Bar behind is
now a National Historical Landmark
representing the beginning of the now
LGBTQ rights movement and PRIDE
is visited by thousands of visitors each
year.
Sonny Bono
Summer Tripimg: BAD STATUES
Sonny Bono was a lovable show folk hero.
Lacking in talent, he made one in the
name of Cher. Although many people
believe Cher's stellar career did not take off
until she dumped the lovable clown and he
went on to be a loud member of congress.
When Sonny wanted to build a restaurant
he was given the runaround by city hall,
and he told us that he would run for
mayor and fire all the city workers. Well he
became mayor and fired the city workers
but they got the last laugh designing a
statue that looms large like a wino not
a lounge singer. There’s a bust of Sonny
tucked behind the escalators at the Palm
Springs airport, and our walkable business
district.
The DDG will be launching a new app for
our weekly calendar over the summer.
for yuor phone. Including Sony and all of
