How about you? Are you perfectly
punctual or totally tardy? As always,
tag @posterchildmag in your
Instagram pictures or comments!
Can’t wait to hear from you!
Tardy, slow, delayed, overdue, unpunctual… Who knew
there were so many different ways to say LATE? It seems
that when it comes to being timely, most folks are either
consistently punctual or notoriously running behind. In
my experience, many members who make up the kid’s
fashion niche fall into the latter category, myself included!
So, you can imagine my delight when I happened upon
an article recently that highlighted a few reasons why
chronically late people are often more successful than
their peers.
For those of us who seem always to be fighting the
clock, we can take comfort in knowing that we aren’t
destined to fail. In fact, we might just have what it takes
to outshine everyone else! In general, members of the
tardy-club are optimistic, multitasking, problem-solvers,
with positive attitudes who are not easily stressed - all
arguably positive traits that lead to successful personal
lives and careers.
So, while I wouldn’t encourage picking up this habit
(or mentioning it to your kids), I feel slightly less guilty
about showing up late to my next social outing!
With cold and miserable weather lasting deep into June,
it seemed summer was running late this year! But now,
the sun is finally out, summer vacation is in full swing,
and it is not too late to get inspired for the season by
flipping through our e-shopping pages (with so many
amazing pieces on sale now!) or browsing our selection
designer Q&A
Visit Pearl Street
Discover Pearl Street Swim an ethically produced
line of swimwear designed for active children. This
American-made kid’s brand is inspiring beautiful
beach, swim and play moments!
INTERVIEW BY ADRIENNE DORSEY
18
Dreamt up in seaside New England and brought
to life in Brooklyn, New York, Pearl Street Swim is a
timeless, coastal-inspired children’s swimwear label
that captures the imaginative and playful spirit of
little ones. Using custom illustrations of seagulls,
beach umbrellas, and other iconic summer themes,
Pearl Street Swim reminds us of simpler, sweeter
times.
We asked founder Sophie Sikaitis, Connecticut
mother to young daughters Penelope and Everly,
to share a bit more about her thoughtfully-made
brand.
What is the inspiration for the new spring/
summer collection?
The spring/summer ‘19 collection was inspired
by long, playful days on the New England coast.
Moments such as unpacking a picnic with your little
ones under your beach umbrella, searching for sand
crabs along with the tide, buckets in tow or staying
for that extra golden hour with your family, watching
the sailboats float by at dusk... This collection
captures those family-focused summer days we’re
all yearning for! For this season we have extended
our sizing up to 7/8, introduced three new handillustrated
prints and will be offering the rashguard
set as a fifth style offering.
What inspired the name of your label?
Pearl Street was part of our family’s regular morning
walk close to the sea in Bellport Village on Long
Island, a place where we used to weekend & summer
before moving to coastal Connecticut. After many
years in Manhattan and Brooklyn, spending our
summers in Bellport, especially the first one with
our daughter Penelope (now 2.5 years old), made
us realize how much we wanted a creative life on
the coast! Funnily enough, we keep on seeing
Pearl Streets pop-up close to the water in different
locations (for instance, there is one in Brooklyn too!).
What made you want to design for children?
Approaching the first summer with my eldest daughter
Penelope, I felt a true void on the market for classic
but also playful children’s swimwear that felt age
appropriate and celebrated childhood! I have always
shopped quality over quantity and knew we would be
spending many, many days at the beach and pool. In
chatting with other like-minded mamas, I found I wasn’t
the only one - people were looking for classic, but
chic and of course sun-safe options for their children
- no characters, no neon, no glitter. Our designs and
prints allow children to be little while appeasing the
discerning and stylish parent as well.
What is Pearl Street’s mission statement or goal?
Pearl Street Swim’s mission is to inspire beautiful beach,
swim and play moments - both for children and the
people who care for them.
Tell us a bit about your design philosophy. How
does it differ for boys and girls?
Our hand illustrated prints and custom solids are
designed to be worn by boys and girls alike. I love a
balance of muted and vivid colors and how these tones
play off each other in our prints to create something
interesting and creative. Given the high quality of our
swimwear, I truly wanted them to be handed down and
around. Instead of trying to dictate gender through
color, I’ve worked hard with our artist to create color
palettes and print concepts that work for both!
What do you have coming up that you are really
excited about?
We are about to go into For Now on Nantucket - the
quintessential New England coastal destination - and I
can’t wait to see our suits out on the island while little
ones make memories with their families! We will also be

designer Q&A
at Batch Mini in Hudson Yards, NYC (currently in San
Francisco) and I am looking forward to events in both
places! We also have a very exciting collaboration
coming up with our Painted Oars print, a favorite!
What are your favourite styles from the current
collection?
I love the sand crabs rashguard set or two-piece for
my girls with sunsafe UPF50. The colors are so good.
I can even pair the rashguard top with chambray
shorts for a day at the park. And the crabbies are
such fun for the little ones with their knobby joints
and beady eyes! If I had a little boy, I would definitely
put him in the sailboats drawstring trunks. The print
is inspired by sailboats floating by at dusk - cool,
evening tones at the most perfect time of day.
Who is the typical Pearl Street Swim customer?
The typical Pearl Street Swim customer is a mom
(and often times a grandmother!) who is discerning
when it comes to style and quality for their children’s
clothes and swimwear. The customer appreciates
that our custom prints can be playful and creative,
while still standing the test of time. Our customers
shop intentionally as their children’s clothing and
swimwear play an important part in their experiences
that will become memories.
You’ve mentioned the swimsuits are UPF 50, could
you tell us a bit more about the sun protection
your swim pieces offer?
Our swimsuits are UPF 50, meaning that only 1/50th
of the sun’s UV rays reach the skin and chlorine &
sunscreen resistant, meaning their quality and color
will withstand this type of use (color will not fade).
Are your swimsuits suitable for children with
sensitive skin?
Feedback from parents last summer was that the
suits were “comfort-kid approved” and that even
children who were sensitive to certain fabrics were
comfortable in our soft, silky (albeit durable!) feeling
fabric.
What is the retail price range for the new
collection?
$50 - $64
You’ve mentioned being manufactured in
Brooklyn. We would love to learn more about
your decision to produce your line in America.
The decision to be American-made comes largely
from the desire to produce and consume responsibly.
Being made in Brooklyn, we can keep our ecological
footprint at a minimum - less shipping distance,
bulk packaging directly from our factory (none of
those little tiny plastics flying around!), our in-house
packaging (hangtags, stationery, eco-shipper) are
all recyclable, and the reusable pouches our suits
come in have many, many uses. Producing locally
also means that as a small company, we have better
control over our minimums and can grow responsibly
and organically. Lastly, we love the human connection
we have in producing locally and contributing to our
community (Pearl Street was launched in Brooklyn!).
How does your sizing run?
Our fit is true to size with room to grow. Our styles
are cut to grow with children. The two-piece has a
higher waist, and longer top and the one-piece has
an adjustable bow to make straps looser or tighter.
The rashguard has a tail hem, and the swim trunks
have a generous waist and working drawstring.
For readers who would like to view your collection
in person, where will you be sold this summer?
Any events coming up?
Pearl Street Swim is sold at select boutiques on the
East Coast and we have several summer pop-ups
at local boutiques in Connecticut, New York and
beyond. Be sure to check out our Instagram for all of
the details on these!
and spotlight
Drawing from a background in art and design,
designer María Varona launched the Spanish
children’s label Yellowpelota in 2013 in Madrid.
Inspired by contemporary designs and influenced by
artistic heritage, the brand offers fresh, comfortable
designs with extraordinary quality for babies, girls, and
boys aged 2 to 8 years. Known for their original unique
patterns, and attention to detail, the established brand
produces timeless and versatile pieces with a new
theme each season, masterfully handcrafted in Spain,
with new colour stories and patterns that are carefully
identified and chosen to bring out the true potential of
each garment.
For the Spring and Summer 2019 season, Yellowpelota
explores the sense of wonder and feeling of the
exuberant Hawaiian nature through their new
collection. We are encouraged to dream of adventuring
unexplored territory while the sound of waves crash
into the shore. Remember the feeling of laughing with
friends and the sense of pure joy splashing in the water
- true freedom? It is all captured in a collection made to
be worn from sunrise to dusk.
The collection, entitled Honu, was inspired by the
symbol of wisdom and good luck and is designed with
fruity colours and soft organic materials. The Hula
dance - a tradition in the Hawaiian culture that transmits
happiness and the will to live life to the fullest - is a
prominent theme and influential to the line’s patterns.
Manufactured from 100% linen and 100% cotton dyeing,
illustrations of hula dancers and playful wording “Maui,
Do the hula, Land of aloha, ukulele,” dance across the
fabrics in soft colours of peach pink, taupe, periwinkle,
mauve, yellow and white.
meet the mark in every way, letting parents retain their sense of
self and style!
The “Dot”
The New Zealand-based brand was the original inventor of the
inline stroller and now, just in time for the busy summer season,
the brand has masterly redesigned and reinvigorated four of their
best-selling, award-winning inline strollers – dot, sport, dash, and
voyager – taking inspiration from vintage trikes, where one child
playfully stood on the back.
Each of these new inline strollers functions as a single-child
buggy with the option of adding a double kit - adapting to the
needs of a growing family with ease.
“Our inline buggies are fantastic single buggies - each offering
all wheel suspension, an easy to use foot brake, intuitive stand
fold, generous sized seats and then some - and when used with
the double kitTM seat accessory, you also get a very cool parent
facing seat for more face-to-face time with your kid.” explains
Campbell Gower, phil&teds executive who holds the playful title
of Chief Cook & Bottle Washer.
the “sport”
“Our inline range is simplicity at its best - functional attributes,
aesthetically pleasing features with price points that please.”
We love that the new range also gives parents more options
to customize their stroller than ever! Because phil&teds knows
each family has different needs, they let you upgrade your ride
with options like the stroller caddy that keeps all your essentials
within arms reach or the new fully-insulated igloo cooler bag that
comes complete with a removable box for the refrigerator.
So which will you pick? For style-savvy parents, each of the four
phil&teds strollers offers a different aesthetic with fabrics and
design elements that match your style! Go for the minimal,
casual leisurewear cool or tailored urban-chic style.
