EDITORIAL
On the face of it
IFSEC was its usual busy mix of new
technologies, information and launches in
2019, but this year the clear trend was
adding analytics to surveillance with facial
recognition a common theme in the hall
Last month in this
column I commented
on the court case in
Cardiff in which a member
of the public is in dispute
with the South Wales
Police because they
allegedly captured his face
twice during an operation
to spot known lawbreakers.
He described this as a
fundamental invasion of his
privacy (see Panel later in
this edition to find out what
the experts think will
happen as a result). One
month later at the UK
security industry’s biggest
event, IFSEC International at ExCeL in London, facial recognition
was again at the fore as it was quite clearly the trend of the show
- which is good news.
The rise of analytics to where we are today is great for the
security installer. It means that surveillance systems are no more
installed purely for security purposes and it is no longer a job
paid for from a single budget with business intelligence and
marketing departments also being able to learn from the camera
collected data.
What is more exciting is that analytics are finally, definitely
here for good. We all know that companies try to get
technologies to market occasionally before they are 100% ready
because they want to either be first or need to be seen to be
riding along on the same buzzwords as everyone else. We’ve
seen it in the past with biometrics, external PIRs, integration and
more recently AI, when these subjects have been the next big
thing but in reality weren’t even ready to shine. Take AI for
example, this has been promoted for a number of years but not
with any manufacturers really having any ‘genuine’ AI tech to
show us. Analytics was in the same boat not so long back, but
now it is here, and here for good.
What this leaning towards software rather than hardware does
mean however is that we will for the next few years at least be
dealing with companies that are new to the security industry
(there were plenty of them at IFSEC 2019) and while the
technology may be very accurate (see above photo) we must
keep in mind that earlier mentioned court case concerning the
use of such innovations in public spaces. Transparency is now
key for the success of camera-led analytics installations.
Design status
Urmet UK has been awarded Secured by
Design certification, joining the UK’s official
police security initiative which aims to prevent
crime through design innovations.
Secured by Design plays a crime prevention
role in the planning process to ‘design out’
crime in a wide range of building sectors. It has
achieved some significant successes including
one million homes built to SBD standards with
reductions in crime of up to 87%.
news that it has reached an agreement for
strategic co-investment with Polaris Capital
Group.
The new company and co-investment is
aimed at achieving stable growth in a market
that Panasonic believes is forecast for growth.
The new company will utilise Polaris’s
experienced cultivated from numerous
investments with manufacturers and large
organisations. Strengthening its solutions
capabilities with proactive alliances and M&As
the new company will aim to enhance its
revenue and profitability globally centred on the
North American market.
After establishment the new company’s
security cameras and software are planned to
be sold through existing Panasonic sales
companies in Europe.
Urmet door entry and access control
solutions have been tested in conjunction with
doors by Premier Security & Fire Consultants
Managing Director of Urmet UK, Manji
Gami, commented on the certification: “Being
a member of SBD gives our clients
(developers, consultants and installers) the
reassurance that working with Urmet UK
means that they are working with a company
where delivering the right solution matters.”
TDSi is acquired by the
Vitaprotech Group
TDSi has announced that it has agreed to be
acquired by Vitaprotech Group. The acquisition
continues Vitaprotech’s growth strategy which
has included several acquisitions in the market
over the last two years.
The acquisition of TDSi aligns with the
Group’s and TDSi’s growth strategy to develop
export sales of technological security solutions
for sites around the world and enables
Vitaprotech to expand its access control
portfolio, to strengthen its export presence
and to access international distribution
networks in the sector.
For TDSi, this merger will allow it to speed
up the finalisation of its new range of GARDiS
products including the launch of Access
Control as a Service through the GARDiS ONVIF
Compatible Open Source software platform
and to benefit from the additional resources
that the Vitaprotech Group brings to
strengthen its market penetration in markets it
currently doesn’t service through the use of
Vitaprotech Group business development and
sales teams.
For Vitaprotech Group’s perimeter intrusion
Paxton announces autumn
roadshow series
Paxton is to host a seri es of interactive
roadshows this autumn to preview the release
of its new single platform solution Paxton10.
Chief Executive Adam Stroud (pictured)
said: “We’re really excited to meet our
installers in person to showcase our new
Paxton10 system. We’ve been working for
many years to provide a rich level of
functionality along with Paxton simplicity.
cross train engineers and extend its existing
apprenticeship programme. It will also enable
the company to retrain ex police and services
personnel, giving them the required industry
skills.
According to Mark Ingleson, Group Managing
Director at OpenView Group: “The industry is
experiencing a major shortage in the number of
engineers with the skills to deliver high quality
engineering and compliance testing services.
OpenView has made a significant investment in
this new technical training facility which will
enable us to gear up to handle the largest
contracts whilst demonstrating our commitment
to building the industry.”
OpenView’s new Training Academy provides
UK.
Chubb has worked with North Devon Homes
for almost 20 years by installing, servicing and
maintaining its warden call systems that
provide a faster, more efficient and more
responsive resident care solution.
“Access control and video make up the vast
majority of the electronic security market. The
two work best when combined into a single
platform but most systems don’t get
integrated due to associated complexity. We
can’t wait to show everyone what we’ve been
working on.”
Nine events will take place at venues across
the UK, including Manchester United’s Old
Trafford and Mercedes Benz World in
Weybridge, throughout September and
October. Attendees will be among the first
people to see Paxton10 in action and get
hands-on experience, hear a keynote speech
from Adam and talk to the system’s creators.
There will also be competitions and giveaways.
Adam said: “We hope installers will join us
to hear about Paxton10, its powerful yet
simple new features and how it can really
benefit their customers.”
Tyco conference goes “beyond security”
The delegates who attended the recent Tyco Engage
Conference 2019 saw how Tyco, the security products division
of Johnson Controls, can help system integrators grow their
businesses by developing solutions which capitalise on
emerging technologies.
‘Beyond Security’ was the central theme of the conference
held at the Melia Villaitana Hotel, Costa Blanca, Spain, which
began with delegates being welcomed by Alan Riegler, Senior
Sales Director EMEA, Access & Video.
“We were delighted so many of our customers throughout
EMEA accepted our invitation to attend this inaugural event,”
said Alan Riegler.
Day One of the conference included a range of
presentations covering key aspects of Tyco branded access
control, fire detection, intrusion and video surveillance
solutions. Day Two enabled delegates to attend more in-depth
presentations, as well as see live demonstrations of various
solutions carried out in the Tyco Mobile Exhibition Unit, which
was parked in the centre of the hotel complex.
Presentations on the company’s ongoing commitment to its
Cyber Solutions Product Security Program, as well as the Tyco
Cloud and Drone solutions, were among the various sessions
which attracted considerable interest from the delegates. Live
demonstrations of the new Tyco Frictionless access control
solution were also well attended. Due to be launched at the
end of 2019, this uses face identification technology to control
access to restricted areas of a building.
THE BOTTOM LINE
IN ASSOCIATION WITH CSL
The interview that gets
the facts from the top
This month Simon Banks
talks to Jim Ludwig,
Managing Director of
Texecom. As one of
Europe’s largest independent security
alarm specialists, Texecom provide
bespoke design solutions that protect
people and property throughout the world.
IoT growth and competing verticals are threatening the entry levels of our
sector, how does the professional industry take control of this?
I think the answer is in the question – ‘how does the professional industry take
control of this?’. In our view, security engineering is a valuable and vital
profession. It requires specialist skills and knowledge to safeguard people and
their property in a reliable and effective manner, all backed up with trusted and
certified suppliers working to international standards.
Professional installation companies are ideally placed to take advantage of the
new opportunities IoT presents. Installers are trusted advisors, who already have
credibility in protecting people. They are security experts, who understand the
technology and are experienced at delivering bespoke solutions. They have local
knowledge, are always on call, and are a long-term partner that end-users can
trust to offer systems that will continue to offer value in the future.
Together, the whole industry needs to take a leadership role in communicating
these values and benefits to a wider audience.
Where does Texecom position itself within the ecosystem of major hubs
such as Alexa, Google, Sky and BT?
We recognise the importance of security systems offering value every day and
defeating the so-called ‘grudge purchase’ mentality. Ultimately end users will want
to operate their systems how they want to, not how the industry tells them to. Our
role is to provide end users with the choices and experiences they are looking for,
while maintaining an uncompromising level of security and protection.
IoT and connectivity should be used to complement and enhance the user
experience, but professionally designed systems must continue to work robustly
when everything else fails. As the recent Google/Nest outage reminds us, security
platforms cannot be wholly reliant on systems outside of the premises. Getting
locked out of your house or not being able to use your heating system because
the Nest network is down isn’t acceptable in the professional space.
Our strategy has been to integrate with trusted partners, allowing flexibility for
users while ensuring that our core security ecosystem is robust and secure.
How does your product roadmap align with the changing profile of the
Installer?
Technology trends only move in one direction and we have a responsibility to
support the professional engineering community along this path. Texecom has,
and is continuing to develop, a range of digital services that add value across the
entire intruder alarm ecosystem, from using, installing and managing a portfolio of
alarms, through to learning and educating the next generation of alarm engineers.
Our Texecom Connect App puts end users in control of their alarm system.
TexecomPro is an app that puts technical information and support where installers
need it, at their fingertips. The Texecom Cloud service allows alarm companies to
manage their alarm portfolio, and our newly launched Texecom Academy will
provide training on all aspects of intruder alarms.
What else are Texecom doing to support the industry?
We are proud to be the official technology partner for the Engineers of Tomorrow
(EoT) competition, as well as a lead sponsor for WorldSkills – a new national
competition for security apprentices working in conjunction with EoT. We will
continue to support colleges in upskilling the next generation of intruder alarm
engineers.
In addition, we continue to focus on developing new products and services to
benefit professional installers and the variety of end user markets they serve.
YOU SAID IT!
“I’m your biggest fan. I think you’re a great company and I love all your products
and the way everything is heading!”
Hikvision DS-2CE71H0T-PIRLO
What’s in the box?
Camera
Quick user guide
User manual
3 screws and wall fixings
Drilling template
The Hikvision DS-2CE71H0T-PIRLO is an IP67
“Turret” style, 5MP CMOS analogue camera
with true day /night switching and a built in
passive infrared motion detector, infrared
illumination and a white LED that can be used for
continuous or strobe lighting on alarm.
Getting started
The camera simply requires a 12volt DC power
supply and coax connection to a compatible TVI
recorder. The available information in the manuals
is quite basic and some can be misleading such as
the Day to Night and Night to Day settings from 0
to 9 with the higher values stated to make the
camera more sensitive rather than simply the
switching point. Similarly, for Smart IR the range of
0 to 3 is given as “the higher the value the more
obvious the effects are”. It is necessary to work
through the available options and find what works
best for your intended location.
Menu options
The camera’s main menu is displayed on-screen
and this can be activated by a compatible TVI
recorder or a suitable engineer’s test monitor,
however, it is likely that the majority of engineer
monitors currently available will be limited to a
1080p maximum resolution rather than the
camera’s default 5MP output.
Video Format: Select from 5MP 20ips, 4MP 30ips,
2MP 25ips or 2MP 30ips.
Exposure: Global, BLC, HLC or DWDR exposure
and AGC (Low, Medium or High).
Day / Night: Auto, Day or Night, IR light control
and changeover threshold value setting.
Video Setting: Image Mode, Brightness, Contrast,
Saturation, Sharpness, DNR and Mirror.
Functions: White light (alarm or off), Trigger Mode
(Camera), Alarm Mode (Solid or Flashing), PIR
level and detection mode (Indoor or Outdoor).
Factory Default: Restore factory settings.
Exit: Exit the menu without saving settings.
Save & Exit: Save changes and exit.
The Video Setting Image Mode option
switched between “Standard” and “High Sat”,
this has little impact on a well-lit scene. The
controls for Brightness etc. had a range of 1 to 9
with all set at 5 by default. The white LED can be
triggered to stay on for a period of 5, 10, 15, 30 or
60 seconds. If set to flash the time options are not
available and the light flashes for approximately
12 seconds with a flash rate of roughly 4 Hz.
In addition to the video and power
connectors the composite cable
from the camera also includes a
2-pole normally open alarm
output socket for connection and
control of local devices
TEST
(continued from p12)
The ability to illuminate the front
white LED on detection of
movement does tend to encourage
people to look towards the camera
so can be helpful in gaining facial
details or at least may deter those
with criminal intent
Hardware
The camera is based on a metal chassis with a
plastic enclosure giving it a reasonably solid feel.
The removable mounting plate and top cover, clip in
place and allow the central “ball” to be positioned
through 3-axis positioning to suit the majority of
likely positions. As options, an inclined ceiling
mount, junction box and wall mounting bracket are
available. In addition to the video and power
connectors the composite cable from the camera
also includes a 2-pole normally open alarm output
socket for connection and control of local devices.
Alarm scheduling will need to be controlled by
the recording system; versions of the Hikvision
“Turbo” recorder can receive and manage the
alarm status.
The white and infrared illumination are both
given a range of 20 metres, but results are really
dependant on reflectivity of surfaces being
viewed. Camera sensitivity is given as 0.01Lux
colour but results were in line with cameras of
this price-point at low light levels.
Conclusion
A very easy option to provide megapixel
performance and PIR activated alarming in one
small device. While the menu options are limited,
this will simplify the installation and configuration
process.
Performance
The built-in PIR has a wider horizontal detection
angle of 110° than the camera’s 85.5° view for the
2.8mm lens version (80.1° for 3.6mm). For the
majority of application to which this camera is
intended this should not be an issue but should
be considered during installation to avoid
unobserved activations.
The ability to illuminate the front white LED on
detection of movement does tend to encourage
people to look towards the camera so can be
helpful in gaining facial details or at least may deter
those with criminal intent. The white LED can also
help to illuminate the foreground in low light alarm
conditions.
INTERVIEW
An alliance for innovation
This month we talk to Johan Jubbega of OSSA to find out more about the
recently established initiative and how it can help manufacturers and
installers with choice and security
“We have a number of
founding partners
including Vivotek,
Bosch Building
Technologies, Pelco,
Milestone Systems
and Hanwha Techwin.
We came together
about a year ago and
discussed the idea of
an alliance”
According to its website, the Open Security
& Safety Alliance (OSSA) is a collaboration
initiative developed to create a framework
providing standards and specifications for
common components including an operating
system, IoT infrastructure, collective approach
for data security and safety solutions.
We caught up with Johan Jubbega, President
of OSSA during IFSEC 2019 to talk about the
initiative and how a group of technology rivals
managed to come together to serve a common
cause and make the security industry more
secure.
What is OSSA?
It is an alliance of like-minded companies that
have come together to address common
problems and challenges we have in the
security and safety industry in order to
stimulate innovation.
When I say common problems this is all
about security and involves data security,
privacy, market fragmentation and a limited
usage of data produced by the security devices.
The goal is to make it easier for application
developers to come into our industry and
getting access to a common standardized
platform (including an operating system) to
deploy their applications and thus stimulate
further innovation.
Who is the ‘we’ in OSSA?
First of all we have a number of founding
partners including Vivotek, Bosch Building
Technologies, Pelco, Milestone Systems and
Hanwha Techwin. We came together about a
year ago and discussed the idea of an alliance.
We then founded the Alliance and launched it in
September 2018.
In the meantime we took on around 25-30
companies which encompass all elements of the
security industry such as device manufacturers,
system integrators, distributors and video
management solution providers to tackle the
whole ecosystem because you need devices and
also the applications to be sold through
integrators and distributors. On top of all of that
we have a member called Security and Safety
Things which is building an OSSA specified
operating system for cameras and a digital
market-place for apps.
We are moving very quickly and we believe
that by 2020 we will have the go-live of an
ecosystem, including the camera operating
system, digital market-place (like an app store)
and partners that deliver their first hardware
and software offerings compatible with the
ecosystem.
The founding partners are essentially
competitors, so how did you all come
together?
To be honest, there we had a lot of interesting
discussions. But already soon we found out that
certain topics can only be solved together.
Addressing these challenges together gives us a
much better chance of raising the bar in the
industry, and stimulating the market and
technology development.
So what are the challenges that you are
addressing?
As we were only founded recently we are still
finding new problems! Typically though we have
identified concerns around cyber security and
the protection of privacy.
The OSSA specified operating system is
therefore based on Android Open Source
Platform (AOSP), which means it already
comes with a lot of security built-in, giving us a
good starting point. And with the contributions
What is the difference between the Open Security & Safety Alliance
and ONVIF?
ONVIF is an open industry forum that provides and promotes standardised
interfaces for effective interoperability of IP-based physical security products.
OSSA focuses on developing a framework outlining a common standardised
platform for security and safety devices solutions. The framework provides
standards and specifications for common components including an operating
system, IoT infrastructure, collective approach for data security and privacy,
and a drive for improved levels of performance. In addition, the Alliance aims to
promote new business models to encourage the adoption of more data-centric
services by users.
of all of our members, we have already
hardened that operating system to make it
even better for security applications. I believe
that an open alliance developed by all of us
will greatly benefit the market, of course we all
want to differentiate from each other and there
will be many areas where device
manufacturers can try to do so, but we all have
one objective of raising the bar and to battle
any security and potential threats we may
come across.
What do you need manufacturers and
installers to do now?
The more security manufacturers we can get
involved with supporting the Alliance, the
broader the open platform will eventually be –
ultimately offering more choice for installers
and integrators. Ideally all devices with their
unique differentiators that are offered in the
ecosystem will be able to work with any
“The more security manufacturers
supporting the Alliance, the
broader the open platform will
software application. For the installers this will
be a big benefit because they will have the
luxury of a broad choice of vendor technologies,
each with their own differentiators such as
image quality or security add-ons, but sharing a
common operating system and approach to data
security and privacy.
Are developments such as AI changing
the nature of the work OSSA is doing?
New technologies, such as AI, need powerful
processors. Therefore we encourage System-on-
Chip (SoC) manufacturers to join the alliance, so
that together we can define a baseline regarding
the performance of hardware. After
establishment of this baseline, it will be
possible for a wide range of app developers to
come in and make use of the power that is
available in cameras that are based on OSSA’s
specifications.
Another objective of the alliance is to
educate the industry on these new
developments and where we are standing so
that installers and integrators are prepared for
what is coming.
Smart motion detection system with high accuracy
Dahua Technology has released SMD Plus, its fullchannel
smart motion detection system which, says the
company, delivers detection accuracy of up to 95%. The
new software is available on Dahua’s XVR AI models.
Upgraded from the original SMD technology running on the CPU, the
new SMD Plus uses an independent AI smart chip loaded with new deep
learning algorithms, enabling processing power to be ten times more
powerful. It also needs fewer pixels to make positive detection results.
As a result, Dahua says SMD Plus can recognise moving objects and
differentiate between people and vehicles, effectively reducing false
alarms caused by objects such as tree branches, animals, insects, shadows and the effects of wind. Meanwhile, users can target specific
vehicles or people for tracking and playback, saving time on searching for and retrieving relevant video.
Dahua SMD XVRs support up to 16 channels and are suitable for indoor and outdoor security applications. HDCVI users need only
upgrade their devices from XVR-X to XVR-I to enjoy the benefits of HD over coax with AI performance. In conjunction with Dahua’s active
deterrence camera, the system can be used to warn off any intruders with white light and a siren, thereby protecting premises while also
saving manpower. No other equipment is required and alarms and alerts can be sent to a user’s mobile phone via the DMSS (Digital
Mobile Surveillance System) app. uk.dahuasecurity.com/uk/
PANEL
Face - the future...
Facial recognition hit the mainstream media recently with a claim that
scanning the public is a violation of “human rights”. Is this a security
make-or-break moment for legislation going forward? The PSI Panel of
experts looks at the future for facial analytics
Facial recognition took a hit recently with a
case in Cardiff going to Court because
South Wales Police allegedly captured the
face of a member of the public without his
consent twice during an operation to spot
known lawbreakers. He described this as “a
fundamental invasion of my privacy”
"It is just like taking people's DNA or
fingerprints, without their knowledge or their
consent," said Megan Goulding, a lawyer from
the civil liberties group Liberty which is
supporting the case.
Could this case be a watershed moment for
the use of facial recognition in the UK and what
changes to legislation could result? The PSI
panel is now in session.
Gareth Williams -
Oprema
Currently surveillance systems
are installed and used in
accordance to the Data
Protection Act 2018 and the
Home Office guidelines on
CCTV. However, some recent
national press controversy regarding the use of
recorded footage concerning facial recognition
in particular, may see some developments
required within the security sector.
To date, end users can keep any recorded
information for up to 30 days as long as
adequate signage is displayed on the particular
site. The advancements in analytics and facial
recognition may see a more stringent approach
to how live and recorded data is utilised. There
are many systems that are able to ‘redact’ facial
features, so that personal information isn’t
stored. This isn’t currently an accredited feature
and a must have for recording systems however
we may see this change.
The fire and intrusion market is heavily
regulated for life safety and security purposes, with
measures such as BS5839-1:2017 (manufactured to
EN54 standard) and PD6662 (manufactured to
EN50131 standard). The regulations in other
sectors, potentially questions the level of
regulation and guidance given to security installers
and end users for the CCTV sector.
www.psimagazine.co.uk
A further area of conjecture is the amount of
DIY CCTV installations. End users can source
some products from the internet and are able to
have features such as facial recognition
however this isn’t regulated by any insurance or
government body.
The remaining months of 2019 will prove to
be interesting regarding surveillance systems in
general and how public bodies react to any
further controversy regarding the use of CCTV,
such as the recent case that saw a gentleman
take the Police to court questioning his breach
of human rights.
Nick Fischer -
Facewatch
It is unfortunate the way the
Police have recently tested
AFR in public places and
shows a lack of understanding
and judgement by all involved.
However, given their resource
limitations, we know the police are trying to do
their best in a tough rising crime landscape.
There is a compelling need to enable the Police
to explore the latest technologies as society
must be protected.
“The remaining
months of 2019 will
prove to be
interesting regarding
surveillance systems
in general and how
public bodies react to
any further
controversy regarding
the use of CCTV”
PANEL
“Building trust is the
most important and,
of course, the most
difficult step that
needs to happen, it
must come from the
highest-level driven
by a set of clear
understandable and
transparent
regulations to all”
24
(from previous page)
It is understandable and a good thing that
the Police have been legally challenged given
their interpretation of how AFR can be applied
in the public domain. This will lead to an open
and thorough debate on how AFR can be used
and ensure the right level of legislation,
control and transparency is put in place. The
sooner this is achieved the better as AFR
technology is improving rapidly and should be
seen as a force for good and not be
misinterpreted as 'Big Brother'.
Building trust is the most important and, of
course, the most difficult step that needs to
happen, it must come from the highest-level
driven by a set of clear understandable and
transparent regulations to all. There also must
be a distinction between the state and the
private sector use of the technology. There is a
big difference here and if we are to make
progress, once again, understanding and
education must come soon ensuring fair and
appropriate use.
Cressida Dick mentioned in a recent TV
broadcast, that AFR is already being used by
the police, but they are a very early stage, with
just a few trials undertaken in limited
locations. Furthermore, she believes and
publicly stated that AFR is an important force
for good that must be embraced to make
society a safer place.
I support her view and believe AFR can have
a material positive impact on society when
applied appropriately. Businesses will use the
technology to reduce and deter crime,
prioritise the customer experience and enable
access rights to buildings and environments.
It's can be used to protect the individual
wellbeing, for example, protect self-excluder
gamblers or prevent urban explorers climbing
sky- scrappers. There are literally hundreds of
positive applications and equally if not
implemented correctly it can be presented as a
potential threat to society and your civil
liberties.
It is time to behave and act responsibly, as
this is one genie that won't be going back in
the bottle!
David Davies - DVS
I do think in the future, when
ever this may be, we will see
more regulation around the
use of surveillance systems
and its metadata that we
take from it, and I don’t think
we should take issue with
this. What we will most likely see is tighter
regulation on those that install, service &
maintain surveillance systems through the use
of accredited trade bodies, and of course we
already have these, but it’s not a mandatory
requirement to be part of this. if the industry
was to go this way it would mean a set of
people working to a common set of objectives
and standards , which would also include not
just physical installation methods but would
include skills to include data protection
awareness , privacy awareness , camera use
and deployment as well as compliance to
guidelines and legal compliance. From what I
can see this shift has already begun, but what
does this mean for regulation of system types
that would include specifics like facial
recognition, people counting, behaviour
analysis and the like? Like all things there is
always a place for this technology for the
security of property and people and we should
not be scared to embrace this technology, it
can have a very positive impact. But whatever
this dataset is used for we should make it
clear why it’s being used and for what
benefits, and how effective this technology is,
this could be an online portal where systems
have to be disclosed and the type of
technologies used, where practical and not
sensitive. We all want to be connected and
have faster, better, now. Sometimes we can
only achieve this through the use of these
technologies.
www.psimagazine.co.uk
Anthony King -
Square One
As an industry I believe
strongly that we should be
fighting and lobbying for more
regulation in the CCTV
industry and the recent case of
Mr Ed Bridges and the South
Wales Police raises some very interesting and
important issues. We are seeing technology
moving at an expediential rate, but this
technology and the use of it, is arguably too
easily available to any person or organisation
holding themselves out as a CCTV installer or
integrator.
I was speaking recently at The Security Event
in Manchester and when asked, 90% of the
audience supported increased regulation and
licensing for CCTV installers and operators. I
believe all the tools possible should be made
available to Law Enforcement and Private
Security Organisations to ensure “Crime has
Consequences”. Whilst some will argue and
question that the use of these AI technologies
are potentially an infringement on our civil
liberties and human rights, I would say these
technologies are a necessary tool to take back
our human rights, that have been stripped from
us by the fear of terrorism, organised crime
gangs, criminals and anti-social behaviour that
makes so many feel unsafe walking the streets
and even in their own homes. These tools
applied properly responsibly and regulated
through professional licensing of their
operators and installers, including a national
register of their deployment, can and will assist
in reducing the impact of crime and terrorism on
us all.
Where we leave our industry and the use of
these types of AI assisted technologies wide
open to criticism, is the low threshold required
to access and deploy their use. How can we
accept that one day you can be a window
cleaner and because you are able to use a
ladder, the next day you can install CCTV?
Professionalise our industry by licensing our
industry.
November 2019, the event will offer a
conference programme delivered by experts, not
manufacturers or government bodies, alongside
an exhibition at EventCity Manchester. In
addition, the annual PSI Premier Awards Dinner
will be held on the evening of 5th November.
There are a number of reasons why PSI and
Benchmark magazine publisher Pro-Activ took
the decision to host the show, and importantly,
to hold it in Manchester.
Why exhibit at SiX?
In recent years we have seen a clear desire for
an installer-only event. The security trade shows
we have today are aimed at both installers and
end users - in fact, in reality they’re aimed at
anyone who has anything to do with security,
fire, facilities management or health and safety.
This wide audience has considerably different
needs and not many of those visiting the event
could actually be interested in buying or
specifying electronic security technology.
We believe that an installer-only show will be
a better ROI for exhibitors because the people
they will have visiting their stands will have a
genuine interest in the products and services on
offer and will be in a better position to make
purchasing decisions than someone only in
attendance because of a co-located event.
Why visit SiX?
SiX is aimed squarely at installers, there is no
end-user focus in any of the seminars and all of
the exhibitors at the event are looking to build
relationships with engineers that specialise in
electronic security technology.
The seminars at the event (news of which is
forthcoming) have been developed to provide
installers with the information they want to hear
rather than a series of manufacturer-led product
presentations or high-brow subjects of no real
relevance to the audience.
The second issue addressed by SiX is the
location of the event. For some installers a trip
South for a London event is not the most
appetising of travel propositions. By hosting SiX
in Manchester in the new purpose-built Event
City (see sidebar) the show splits the nation in
half, sitting in an easily accessible area with
plenty of options for overnight stays if required.
“Potential customers from
Birmingham and above don’t
appear to have the appetite to trek
to London (Docklands) and
therefore this show should
generate more flow from our
Northern prospects”
- Mark Rees, 360 Vision
Technology
In essence SiX is only for installers, there is
no end-user focus or long trek on the cards for
installers looking to attend. For potential
exhibitors this represents an unmissable
opportunity to reach their ideal customer base.
“As SiX is an event that focuses on
installers it is particularly relevant
to Inner Range in the UK as our
latest solutions are aimed directly
at the installer. 2019 sees us
expanding rapidly within the UK
market and SIX promises to attract
our target audience”
- Tim Northwood, Inner Range
IFSEC 2019
Big show highlights
Mid-June 2019 saw the UK’s biggest security event, IFSEC International,
take place in London. There was a lot to see and do, so in case you
couldn’t make it or spent too long in the bar, here’s a selection of
attractions that you might have missed over the three days
Our overall opinion on this year’s event can
be found on page 5 of this edition, however
we couldn’t just give you our thoughts on
what the big trends and ideas were, so here is our
random selection (in no particular order) of some
of the launches, sights and attractions of IFSEC
2019.
Visual verification with OPTEX
Optex launched two new solutions
at IFSEC with visual verification at
their heart. The VXI-CMOD allows
installers/end-users to upgrade
the Optex VXI outdoor approach
sensor with a wireless 180 degree
day/night camera that will send
keyholders immediate notification
in the event of intrusion, providing
recorded footage and live images
on which to make informed
decisions about appropriate action.
The second solution announced
was the Optex Bridge powered by CHeKT, a
hardware and software solution that takes
separate intruder and CCTV technologies installed
on the same site, but acting independently, and
‘bridges’ them to create one, seamless,
integrated monitored solution. Intruder alarms
can now effectively be visually verified.
Secure Logiq launched Logiqal
Healthcheck Pro
Logiqal Healthcheck Pro is a
complete suite of management
tools to ensure, at a glance, that
global customer CCTV estates are
secure, optimised and fully
operational at all times. Visual
confirmation utilising a simple to
understand traffic light system
confirms the operational status of every customer
site, either as icons or displayed live on a map.
Abloy and Valterri Bottas
Abloy UK invited visitors to learn
more about its global vision, ‘Abloy
affordable to add cloud to new and legacy
installs. Each device can cloud-enable up to 8
cameras or channels from a DVR/NVR simply by
adding it to the local network.
Abloy showcased a number of products including
the PROTEC2 CLIQ access control system, which
enables remote key management and provides
audit trails on locks and padlocks which fulfils the
demands of regulators. It also has the ability to
electronically remove lost or stolen keys from the
system, meaning security can still be confidently
maintained in circumstances where a key has
been misplaced.
Securing a perimeter with
Pyronix
Exhibiting alongside parent
company Hikvision for the
third time, Pyronix
demonstrated how to set
up a secure perimeter with
its XD detectors, indoor
and outdoor Wi-Fi cameras,
security control panels and the updated
ProControl+ app. The company also showcased
something very exciting at the show; adding even
greater functionality to our all-rounded perimeter
protection solution, for additional peace of mind
and greater upsell and retention advantages for
our installers.
Camera launches
from IDIS
A range of new cameras and
smarter deep learning
software, offering remote administration with the
benefits of faulty item exchange, fleet
management and full audit control capability. It
can be recorded with instant email notifications
linked to specific item movements. Traka also
highlighted its integration credentials with access
control providers, to present increased efficiency,
resource and significant cost savings, without
compromising on safety or security.
Artificial intelligence focus from
Dahua
Dahua focused on Artificial Intelligence at IFSEC
this year. AI embraces advanced deep-learning
technology, such as video data structuring, face
and vehicle recognition, people counting and
perimeter protection, greatly improving the
efficiency of searching targets. Dahua’s latest
Smart Motion Detection Plus reportedly delivers
people and vehicle detection accuracy up to 95%.
Available on Dahua’s HDCVI 5.0 series, this
technology reduces nuisance alarms and can cut
surveillance costs using a built-in siren and white
light feature (Active Deterrence Camera).
Radar awareness with InnoSenT
The focus on the InnoSenT stand was on the
Smart Tracker of the new iSYS-50x1 series. “IFSEC
2019 presented us with an ideal opportunity to
demonstrate our new systems to the public for the
first time. We were very excited to see how the
audience of industry specialists reacted to our
developments,” explained Christian Bömmel,
Head of Industrial Sales & Marketing. InnoSenT
also showcased the iSYS-50xx series, which was
recently expanded to include two additional radar
systems. The products provide information on the
speed, distance, direction of movement and
position of persons or vehicles within the
coverage area of up to 29,500 m².
Proxyclick unveiled face
recognition-equipped VMS
Proxyclick’s solution
for visitor security
was unveiled at
IFSEC. The app-based
Visitor Management
System (VMS)
seamlessly integrates with six of the biggest
players in the access control market. Proxyclick’s
‘ID Match’ facial recognition feature adds a much
tighter, yet non-encroaching level of security to
the front desk experience. The new feature
management across large estates. Other features
include a full-shift battery life, Wi-Fi streaming,
120 degree horizontal field of view and haptic and
audio feedback alerts to show when recording has
been activated.
The main focus for many
surveillance companies was facial
recognition
of the new printing production line for technical
furniture. The new printer can print onto the
panels with textures and patterns, created inhouse.
These will be added to on a regular basis,
incorporating the trends in office furniture design,
to build up a library of popular finishes and colour
schemes coordinating with worktop finishes.
Logos and artwork including montages can also
be added, giving clients complete customisation
over the look of their new control room furniture.
Hikvision announces Secure by
Default initiative
Hikvision helped launch the Secure by Default
initiative and unveiled new product and
technology developments at the show this year.
Secure by Default is a set of minimum
requirements which for the first time will provide a
guarantee for users that network video security
products are as secure as possible in their default
settings out of the box. Secure by Default was
launched by UK Surveillance Camera
Commissioner Tony Porter as part of the first
National Surveillance Camera day, the launch of
which took place on Thursday June 20.
Percepto launched the next generation of its AIpowered
autonomous industrial Drone-in-a-Box
(DIB) at IFSEC. The solution includes a portable,
smaller, lighter-weight and weather resistant base
station. Adding 5G compatibility, the new DIB also
features seamless integration of 2D mapping and
3D modelling, customised reporting, compliance
and enhanced safety functions. At only 166(W) x
uses lasers to scan the
environment and build an image
of the world around it regardless of lighting
conditions. Presenting the technology in the UK
for the first time at IFSEC Cepton’s Neil
Huntingdon said that because the device
combines the sensor with a micro-computer in a
single package it can process the information
directly at the “edge” and highlight only potential
threats. This then guarantees the anonymity of
those not involved in any suspicious incident.
PROFESSIONAL TEST
Access control manufacturer Inner
Range showcased new apps,
integrations and an evidence vault
with cryptographic fingerprinting
Inner Range’s stand seemed to be busy
throughout IFSEC, but we did manage to
catch up with Tim Northwood, MD, to find out
what was proving popular with installers.
“The show has been really good for us this
year - at times we've been exceedingly busy,”
said Tim. “The footfall was certainly better than
we expected and we're delighted with that. The
interest from visitors has primarily been around
our integration options. So solutions with
integrated access, intruder and biometrics. One
of the angles that people are really interested in
are how we are able to offer cause and effect
solutions so they can have a security
management system that will integrate almost
every service that they're looking for and that
has probably increased the footfall on our stand
because it takes so long to demo it!
“I think also our addition of integration of
biometrics, both 2D and 3D fingerprint
recognition and Iris recognition as well, has
been of great interest to a lot of people,” he
continued. “Also we probably only for the
INTEGRATING EVERY SERVICE
second time have shown our entry-level product,
which is a web-based and a lot of people are
interested in that because it doesn't require any
software and it doesn't require the end user to
purchase a PC that can go wrong - it's easily
accessible from any browser. And again, that's a
fully integrated access and intruder product.”
“Our addition of
integration of
biometrics, both 2D
and 3D fingerprint
recognition and Iris
recognition as well,
has been of great
interest”
VANDERBILT & COMNET: SUPPORTING CUSTOMERS
ON EVERY STEP OF THEIR JOURNEY
Vanderbilt and ComNet, in addition to their flagship
products and prominence in open platforms and
integrations, highlighted their ability to aid customers
in every step of their security journey.
On the final day of the show, PSI magazine
spoke to Ross Wilks, the Head of Marketing
Communications at Vanderbilt International
UK, to find out what was interesting the visitors:
“At the event we've been demonstrating our
latest IP entry door phone system which
integrates with our access control solution, ACT
Enterprise,” says Ross. “We’ve also shown how
we can integrate biometric technology and the
new rules mapping engine which simplifies the
way in which installers can set up complicated
rules for access control. The example we've been
using at IFSEC is how you can badge a reader on a
Friday evening after work, which turns the lights
off in the office and then when you arrive at the
local pizza parlour your meal is ready for you! This
has been generating a lot of interest with visitors.
“From an RMR (recurring monthly revenue)
perspective with our ACT365 Cloud solution,
we've shown IP door phone integration that will
be launched very soon,” he said. “From our
intruder detection
portfolio SPC
Connect, we had
another RMR
solution enabling
installers to access
panels and do
remote maintenance
for customers. This is
growing at an exponential rate and we're about to
launch our second phase of wireless components
to support the SPC platform.”
Commenting on the ComNet area of the stand,
Ross said: “What is interesting for us as a security
manufacturer, is that our systems provide the
data and the ComNet side of our business
transmits the data. What we've shown on the
stand this year is how we're integrating 60W PoE
switches to help power some of our latest PoE
controllers, which has again received a warm
welcome from visitors.”
“You can badge a
reader on a Friday
evening after work,
which turns the lights
off in the office and
then when you arrive
at the local pizza
parlour your meal is
A NEW FEATURE-RICH INTRUSION
DETECTION SYSTEM
Johnson Controls has entered the
Grade 3 intrusion market with a
new commercial security system
The new EN Grade 3-compliant Tyco DSC
PowerSeries Pro intrusion security alarm
system provides a feature-rich intrusion
detection solution for commercial properties of
any size, from small shops to large office
buildings, factories, healthcare facilities and
educational campuses.
The PowerSeries Pro completes the JCI
intrusion product portfolio with integrators now
able to single-source a complete electronic
security solution for commercial installations
from Johnson Controls, according to Jennifer
Doctor, the company’s Intrusion Product
Management Senior Director.
“The launch of this high-specification system
provides exciting opportunities for our Tyco
installation partners across EMEA to generate
new business, as well as consolidate their
relationships with their existing end-user
clients,” said Jennifer. “They can now recommend
the EN Grade 3-compliant PowerSeries Pro to
their clients, along with access control and video
surveillance solutions which come under the
Johnson Controls umbrella, safe in the knowledge
that all our products and systems meet the most
demanding of standards for commercial property
applications.”
Key features
• PowerSeries Pro is ideal for the most
demanding applications where a Grade 3
system is an essential requirement or just a
reference to follow.
• PowerSeries Pro has a high-current
capability, making it well-suited for large-scale
buildings where large numbers of contacts and
sensors need to be installed.
• All the communication, whether internal
between the system components or external
with the monitoring centre, is cyber secure,
meeting the highest standards with AES-128 bit
encryption.
The installers’ friend
Neil Evans, Senior Product Manager, believes
that PowerSeries Pro will very quickly earn a
www.psimagazine.co.uk
reputation for being the ‘installers’ friend’. “A
lot of thought has been put into how we can
make life easier for installation engineers and
reduce the time they have to be on site. For
example, PowerSeries Pro is supplied with
removable terminal strips and programming
templates, as well as ethernet and Wi-Fi
capabilities to reduce installation and system
commissioning time. There is also a supporting
installers’ app which can be run on a
smartphone or tablet to program the system
locally.”
Hybrid option
PowerSeries Pro also offers a highly effective
hybrid intrusion security alarm solution by
providing the option to install a combination of
hardwired and wireless detectors and sensors.
With built-in 128-bit AES encryption and cyber
protection capabilities, the hybrid option
provides an EN Grade 2-equivalent solution
which capitalises on unique PowerG
technology – an “invisible wire”. PowerG
features multi-channel frequency hopping and
provides true two-way wireless
communication. It also has the ability to
transmit detector activation alerts over long
distances. This offers potential major cost and
operational benefits by being able to have one
control unit handle alarm activity from
detectors located in multiple buildings on
a site.
You are the
future of security
The security industry is
changing. It’s digitising.
Customers are more tech-savvy than ever before.
Security installers need to add more value and be
more efficient just to keep up. To face this
challenge head on Texecom has created the
Texecom Academy.
Designed to help security professionals get
ahead of the curve, Texecom Academy redefines
what it means to be a ‘security professional’. It
does this by providing the skills, tools and
mindset that will define the future of security – for installers and their customers.
The first courses will be aimed at those just entering the security industry or new to Texecom equipment. Texecom has
partnered with industry-leading training provider Tavcom to provide a BTEC Level 3 course in Perimeter and Intruder Alarms.
This interactive online course gives installers the underpinning knowledge and understanding required to be able to design
cost-effective alarm and perimeter detection systems that conform to current international and national standards.
With no prerequisites to join, it’s perfect for those who are entering the intruder alarm industry for the first time or looking to
improve their skills and gain an industry recognised qualification. After completing the course, installers should have a basic
knowledge of all the component parts which go together to make a successful intruder and hold-up alarm system and, more
importantly, the pitfalls to avoid.
In addition to the BTEC Level 3 course, there is also a free ‘bitesize’ course on Detection Devices. Also commonly referred to
as sensors, detection devices utilise a wide range of technologies and must be capable of reliably detecting intruders while also
having a high resistance to false activations. They may be passive, such as a basic switch or contact, or they may be powered
active devices that have onboard signal processing to determine whether an intrusion
is taking place. This free course will help installers understand everything they need to
know to get started with these devices.
Does your access control system offer
robust cyber security too?
Access control systems are a huge asset for security, offering
integrated and intelligent responses to events on site. But the
best access control systems guard against cyber as well as
physical threats to ensure more robust safety and security for
people and places. Inner Range General Manager Tim
Northwood blogs on the Inner Range Open Door platform
about what to look for in your access control system to ensure you have robust cyber as well as physical security in place.
Secure communications are paramount for cyber security, whether that’s via in-house private communication networks or
between access control system controllers, servers and door modules, or when the core system integrates with third-party
products, such as CCTV. A robust level of end-to-end encryption across all these communications channels and interfaces is
vital. Data encryption ensures secure LAN communications at all times and continuous monitoring will detect any fault or
attempted module substitution. Ensuring the communications network is isolated also helps reduce the risk of interception.
Sandboxing is a software management strategy that isolates applications, such as your access control system, from critical
system resources and other programs, such as other products integrated with your core access control system. It provides an
extra layer of security that prevents malware or harmful applications from negatively affecting your access control system.
Without sandboxing, an application may have unrestricted access to all system resources
and user data on a computer. A sandboxed app, on the other hand, can only access
resources in its own ‘sandbox’. An application’s sandbox is a limited area of storage space
and memory that contains the only resources the program requires. If a program needs to
access resources or files outside its sandbox, permission must be explicitly granted.
IDIS Smart UX for an advanced
user interface with PTZ controls
To combat the challenges of IP PTZ controls, IDIS has
developed the game changing Smart UX Controls
software to provide unparalleled accuracy and ease of use featuring
intuitive “Slingshot” and “Rubberband” style controls, creating an
experience unlike any other available on the market. These smooth and
seamless controls allow users to easily follow moving objects in realtime
with groundbreaking accuracy by panning images at different speeds and in different directions literally without lifting a
finger.
IDIS has also gone one step further to lessen the pain points associated with traditional PTZ
controls and introduced “Quick Controls” functions to allow for simple and fast operation utilising a
CTRL button and mouse combination (left/right/wheel click). IDIS “Quick Controls” consist of “Quick
Save”, “Quick Find”, “Quick Dewarping”, “Quick Zoom” and “Quick PTZ”. These revolutionary controls
allow operators to dewarp any point of interest and even pan-tilt-zoom in a dewarping state.
The smart way for a more
efficient video security project
The time consuming and costly task of planning,
configuration, installation and reporting of a video
security project has just been made simple by a very clever app from
Bosch, Project Assistant.
Designed and developed by Bosch Security Systems to assist system
integrators, the Project Assistant app is available to download for free
from various App stores for installation on desktop, tablet and
smartphone devices, and works on Apple, Windows and Google platforms.
We wanted it to be accessible to everyone, because everyone should be benefiting from the control, transparency and efficiency
made possible by the Project Assistant app at every phase of a video security project.
Now, project set-up and pre-configuration can start in the office without the physical camera. Only
the project plans, IP addresses and a password from the client are required for the system integrator
to create a new project via the app (or an Excel-compatible file format), with the option to set up per
camera, or multiple cameras at once.
Advances in video analytics are
transforming security
Honeywell’s Advanced Video Analytics solutions offer in-depth
insights and automation/alert options from video installations.
With video analytics including LoiterTrace, IntrusionTrace, VehicleTrace and
SmokeTrace, video security can be more powerful than ever before. Analytics allow
video to cross over into the realm of fire and intrusion protection and offers a
range of other uses thanks to its flexibility and adaptibility. This functionality can
not only result in installation and maintenance cost reductions, but also in
simplified and more efficient management and use.
As security technology has advanced, the range of tasks that each discipline can perform has increased. However, this
change stands out most in video surveillance. Due to both the visual nature of the medium and the rapid growth of processing
and analytical power, video surveillance solutions can now perform functions that were once the
domain of other security disciplines. Rapid technological advances have also vastly increased the
level of automation within video surveillance systems to process events, detection and responses.
Meet the installer
Bobby Dhunay is the Head Engineer
at Tel Cam Security Systems in
Hanwell, London and has been
working in the security industry for
six years. Bobby’s areas of expertise
are intruder alarms, CCTV, fire
alarms, access control, and home
automation. The company is NSI
Gold accredited and is also an
Eaton Security Gold installer
What would be a typical project for you?
Each day differs from the last one, which is what
makes my job so great, however there are two
types of installation projects that I work on – a
domestic CCTV installation, which involves
installing a CCTV system to a home property.
Often the system will include a camera, storage,
recording and associated equipment. The other
most common installation I carry out is a standard
intruder alarm installation.
What is the best thing about working in
security?
There are many benefits, I love being on the front
line, being out all day and customer facing. Being
able to use new technology, such as
SecureConnect from Eaton is also brilliant.
Having said all that, I think the most enjoyable
aspect is I’m able to use the problem solving
skills that I’ve acquired over my career to in a
practical job role, as opposed to being office
bound all day – it makes a huge difference!
What is the industry’s biggest myth?
Insurance is a big issue in our industry and there
are many misconceptions, however one that I see
over and over again is people who believe that
they are fully safe with a DIY security system
which is not insurance approved.
Are you concerned about Brexit?
Whilst Brexit is a concern for many industries, it is
not one that will necessarily affect ours, at least
in the short term.
Granted no-one really knows what will happen
or how it will affect people or businesses so
there’s no point really worrying about it… for now!
What advice would you give to a younger
version of yourself?
Over the years, I’ve picked up numerous
strategies for how to work more efficiently but the
one that I always come back to and that has been
the most helpful is “work smarter, not harder”.
If you won £25,000 what would you do with
the money?
£25,000 is a life changing sum of money for
anyone in my generation and giving the state of
the housing market at the moment, I’d have to
say a deposit for a house –
or at least a partial
deposit!
“Third party
accreditation is key to
my job – not only
does it show
customers that I am
an expert in the field
and differentiates me
from competitors,
who perhaps don’t
have the same
qualifications as me”
Is third party accreditation beneficial to
your company?
Third party accreditation is key to my job – not
only does it show customers that I am an expert in
the field and differentiates me from competitors,
who perhaps don’t have the same qualifications
as me. From a personal point of view, it gives me
the opportunity to go for more senior roles earlier
in my career.
Are there any common requests from
customers that give you problems?
Customers (understandably) always want the
highest possible quality but sometimes they
don’t understand the cost that this can
involve. This can lead to a difficult
conversation when us installers have to
break the news to customers that the
system they’re craving may be
slightly out of their price range.
OFF THE WALL
CAUGHT ON CAMERA
With this fruit I thee rob
As we all know, CCTV has a real value in the
fight against crime, however once in a while it
captures the public doing something that is
perhaps not altogether sensible or it catches a
real one-off moment. Here we look at some
footage that made headlines recently…
Don’t watch her, watch me!
According to reports, a robber made off with
almost $8,000 from two Israeli banks after
holding them up armed with an avocado. The
man struck in May demanding money. When
the Postal Bank worker hesitated, the man
pulled out what he said was a grenade and threatened to
throw it if she refused. When captured the fruit threat was
exposed. Unfortunately the full CCTV has not been released.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mvs_0Eb2-TY
It’s always worth having an exit strategy when
it comes to being a criminal yet the distraction
technique used by this pair of shoplifters got
them noticed right across the globe. While one
walks out with an estimated $377 worth of
clothes, the other ‘twerks’ to catch the eye of security guards
at the Florida store. A sight to make eyes sore.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=8yOPSlSBHwE
Pizza with added ‘topping’
How far two people would go to avoid paying
for a £7 lunch was revealed by the Daily Mail
as CCTV footage taken at The Peacock in
Sunderland showed two women placing a
strand of hair onto a pizza. Initially staff apologised and gave
the women a refund on the lunch as well as a round of drinks,
but staff became suspicious when they realised the hair
didn’t match anyone working at the pub. The pub’s owners
Pub Culture slammed the ‘cynical stunt’ caught on camera.
Man’s best friends to the rescue
During this armed robbery attempt in Argentina
in May, a man is held up by two men outside
his house before his two boxer dogs come to
the rescue and chase off the assailants.
Despite being fired at, the dogs send the failed
robbers packing and return to a relieved owner. No doubt the
plucky pair got extra treats and fuss that night!
Ease of use brings value
With today’s intuitive management
tools, the benefits of video
surveillance in safety and security
are more accessible than they
have ever been, to a broader
range of organisations says
Christina Behle of Axis
Any technology is only as valuable as the
user’s skills and ability to operate it.
Looking at how we use business software
applications, or only use a small part of the
functionality on our mobile phones, it becomes
clear how technology is rarely used to its full
potential. This is as true of video surveillance as
any other technology: a solution that isn’t
intuitive, easy to use and manage won’t deliver
maximum value. And while the quality of video
surveillance has improved enormously in recent
years, and the addition of other network
technologies and analytics have enhanced
coverage and insight, these innovations will
mean little if the operator cannot make full use
of them. This is particularly true of smaller
organisations – whether in retail, hospitality,
education or manufacturing – which are far less
likely to have people specifically employed to
use and manage the video surveillance solution.
An intuitive user interface is therefore
essential in allowing non-specialist employees
to set up and operate cameras and deliver the
associated security and operational benefits.
Key aspects that should be considered include:
• Automatic camera discovery and setup
wizards so that systems are live as quickly as
possible
• The ability to view live and recorded video
simultaneously
• Tabs that enable instant recall of views of
interest
• On-screen controls for common and useful
camera features
• An ‘always on’ timeline for easier
investigation after any incidents
• Simple export of video footage to relevant
authorities
In many smaller organisations, the video
surveillance operator isn’t dedicated to the task
full-time. In such cases, email notifications with
an attached image can alert the operator, who
www.psimagazine.co.uk
can then use a mobile viewing app to access live
surveillance. In doing so, system users are free
from static camera management stations,
allowing them to monitor video surveillance
while engaged in other work.
Every organisation is different, which is why
it is vital to understand the unique
requirements the surveillance system needs to
fulfil. Take Washington Community High School
(WCHS) for example. As the school expanded, it
outgrew its security system, which was made
up of a variety of different analogue cameras
from multiple manufacturers. As such the
system was difficult to use and generated a
large number of false alarms, as well as there
being gaps in coverage. The school decided to
upgrade to an IP-based system to improve
quality, coverage and ease of use.
After deploying the new system, the schools
issues around usability were reduced. For
example, rather than spending an hour
reviewing analogue video to find five minutes’
worth of relevant footage, the school’s security
officer can quickly find incidents on video and
see exactly what happened, allowing them to
address the issues immediately. By also using
video management software security personnel
can spend more time monitoring the school for
potential problems.
“It’s performed much better than the former
system and it’s saved me a lot of time, probably
several hours,” said School Resource Officer
Troi Westbrook. Also, by the new system being
very user-friendly, it allows new users to get up
to speed quickly, saving money on training
costs and the consequences of user errors.
“A solution that isn’t
intuitive, easy to use
and manage won’t
deliver maximum
value”
of its latest Mini Handsfree monitors.
Aubury Place is a new gated community of
nine four, five and six bedroom homes in
Chiswick, London.
Comelit’s Specification team, together with
chosen installers Wheeler Electrical, was
involved with Kebbell from the initial design
process, through the works programme to
project completion.
The new system enables residents to respond
to door entry requests from any compatible
mobile and benefit from video memory, to record
missed calls.
Guest experience at Dubai
hotels are improved
Guests at some of Dubai’s newest hotels will
enjoy more efficient and memorable service
thanks to eFusion technology from Maxxess.
The eFusion solution is being used for
streamlining of security and safety – tying
together front-of-house and back-of-house
operations - at a number of hotel developments.
The result will be a smoother check-in
experience for guests, with minimal queuing, no
cumbersome paperwork, and more attentive
service. By integrating front and back of house
operations at busy hotels, eFusion reduces
problems with inefficiency and human error and
improves situational awareness and control
capability for management teams.
Among the latest five-star destinations to
adopt eFusion, the Taj Exotica Resort & Spa on
Palm Jumeirah comprises seventeen floors with
200-plus rooms and suites, along with
recreational and dining facilities. The Taj Jumeirah
Lake Towers, another development by the Indian
Hotels Company due to open this year, will also
benefit from Maxxess integration technology.
It provides an umbrella management system
and removes the need for operators to continually
switch between systems.
The systems and IT integrator for the new-build
with a Mini Handsfree
monitor complete with
integrated WiFi,
operating through
Comelit’s VIP system.
At the gates to the
development is
Comelit’s stainless
steel flush mounted
316 Touch entrance
panel, branded to
Kebbell Homes. The
system enables new
residents to grant
access through the
vehicle gates or adjacent pedestrian gate using
the 4.3” internal monitor or a dedicated mobile
app. And up to fifteen smart devices can be
connected to each and every property’s
individual WiFi monitor.
project, PACC Information and Communication
Technology LLC, says eFusion was specified
because it met requirements for a robust solution
that would be easy to adapt going forward.
At the Taj Exotica, eFusion will integrate the
front of house system from Assa Abloy the
Honeywell Simplex fire system controls; the
Honeywell Building Management System
connected via a Bacnet gateway; and a
combination of 403 Hanwa Wisenet IP internal
and external cameras, installed by ISS CCTV and
operated through SecureOS video management
software (VMS).
The Assa Abloy VingCard access control
system, securing almost 300 doors, will be
managed from the eFusion platform alongside
other key services due to be added, including the
OTIS elevator controls.
eFusion will allow the hotel’s management to
define events of interest – such a particular door
being unlocked, or alarms being set or unset –
and provide transactional information to improve
security for guests, and accountability. The
solution also enables centralised management of
room safes, mini-bars and cupboards, and the
control of all alarm transactions.
Cameras linked to door access will allow video
pop-up to be triggered by pre-defined events, and
operators will have complete PTZ control,
playback and video functionality.
Is ‘integration’ really still considered a
buzzword in the security industry? It could
be argued that security professionals have
known about the benefits of connecting
devices long before the Internet of Things
(IoT). However, let’s face it, it can still be a
complex issue…
Janus C4 access control was developed to
be as integration-centric as possible,
allowing it to play nicely with others.
Microsoft, Hikvision, Honeywell, Texecom,
Avigilon and Milestone to name a few.
Simply choose best in class CCTV/Intrusion
APPLICATION
College CCTV system achieves
almost instant success
Like many educational facilities, Brighton Hove &
Sussex Sixth Form College (BHASVIC) in East
Sussex, lacks the resources for a round-the-clock
security team. Upgrading the school's analogue
CCTV system, however, with a Lilin IP cameras,
server and software has helped BHASVIC meet its
security needs, and provided a high-resolution
video solution that can be accessed remotely by
authorised staff when they are not on-site or
during off hours.
During planning, both the Head of Facilities
and the school security team made it clear that
the new system needed to give them remote
viewing of HD video, wherever they were and
whatever the time. This was implemented through
the installation of the Lilin Viewer App on their
smartphones and tablets for access to live feeds
and playback. Next, the client software was
installed on school PCs for select staff and
installed on the caretaker's home computer for
round the clock surveillance. The Head of
Facilities established a hierarchy of video access
dependent on staff role.
A total of 18 Lilin MR8342 cameras were
installed outside the school for general
surveillance and monitoring of key areas such as
the main entrance, bike
sheds and other busy areas
on the campus grounds. The
4MP camera resolution
(2688x 1520) covers large
areas that would normally
require several standard
resolution cameras. Indoors,
1080P LR2322 dome
cameras were placed within
the sports building, café and
reception areas. Both
camera models are vandalproof
to prevent damages. They also feature Lilin
Sense Up+ technology, combined with 30-meter
infrared night vision.
Along with remote access, BHASVIC wanted a
video surveilance solution that included privacy
masking zones for areas where sensitive
information was displayed, along with the ability
to flag motion events and deliver high quality
images that clearly identified a trespasser or
vandal.
Shortly after the system was installed it
captured clear footage of a man who had stolen
more than 40 bicycles from students and railway
station passengers. The man was identified by the
video, arrested and sentenced to 30 days in jail.
Sheffield City Council upgrades fire alarm
systems across housing stock
Sheffield City Council has
taken a decision to upgrade
the fire alarm systems across
its entire housing stock as part
of an electrical upgrade
programme to keep customers
safe. Phase 1 of this work will
see over 20,000 properties
upgraded from category LD3 to
LD2 using Aico 3000 Series
Alarms.
Domestic Fire Alarm
installation is guided by BS
5839-6 which clearly identifies
both grades of alarm system to
use and categories of
protection. Grade D is the
most common and requires one or more interlinked mains
powered alarms, each with an integral stand-by supply. LD3
category, which is a low level of protection, was the minimum
requirement, but Sheffield City Council decided to move to the
next level up, LD2, in anticipation of changes to the British
Standard, which were released at the end of April.
The Council, through its principal contractors, is installing mains
powered 3000 Series for this upgrade, using the Ei3024 and
Ei3028 Multi-Sensors. The Ei3024 features Optical and Heat
Sensors which constantly monitor and analyse smoke and heat
levels. In line with LD2, the Council is fitting mains powered
Smoke Alarms in every circulation space on each storey (i.e.
hallways and landings), in the principal habitable rooms and in
every access room serving an inner room, plus a Heat Alarm in the
kitchen. All 3000 Series Alarms within a property are being
hardwired together or, where this is not practical, wirelessly
interconnected using Aico SmartLINK RF technology.
This is a 360° dome IP camera with built-in infrared
illumination. It supports two-way audio, alarm input and
outputs and a range of viewing modes.
Review: This is a well-built 360° camera with some very
flexible display modes. For maximum benefit it would
ideally be used with an IDIS NVR or front end but
works well with the supplied software or Web viewer.
Concept Pro – CP-HSD20-AHD
This Concept Pro IP66 IK10 rated speed-dome is based on the Starvis 1/2.8” CMOS
sensor, giving a 2MP (1920 x 1080p) image with a 20x zoom lens and in-built infrared
illuminators with a stated range of up to 150 metres. A 30x zoom version is also
available. The camera provides outputs for all the main analogue HD formats such as
AHD, CVI, TVI along with the digital over coax SDI standard.
Review: An interesting highly sensitive HD speed dome that gives a potentially easy route to
changing from analogue HD to IP based viewing and control, compatible with all key analogue HD
systems. Some of the camera’s core configuration options are not currently
accessible via the browser but possibly may be included in a future
firmware version.
SMOKE DETECTION
Hikvision – DS-2CD4A26FWD
This camera is a high-end outdoor bullet camera identified as part of
Hikvision’s DarkFighter range. The camera offers very high sensitivity and
1920 x 1080p HD performance with pre-installed firmware to provide video
analytic functions. These can be selected from options including Audio
Exception, Defocus, Scene Change, Face, Line Crossing, Intrusion, Region Entrance,
Region Exiting, Unattended Baggage and Object Removal Detection.
Review: The wide range of detection methods mean that this camera can fulfil the majority of current security video tasks. Its builtin
Infrared illuminator range and high sensitivity provide very good image quality even in challenging conditions.
Tyco – Illustra Flex IFS02P6INWIT
This Indoor HD PTZ dome is from the Illustra Flex range and has a 30 times optical and
12 times digital zoom range with IR illumination up to 25 metres. An external variant
has IR support to 150 metres.
Review: A very well constructed PTZ camera unit with straightforward connection and
configuration. Some minor issues encountered with setup functions and lens performance but overall,
good image quality and extended zoom range.
Hanwha Techwin – Wisenet PNM-9320VQP
The Wisenet PNM-9320VQP is a relatively large assembly that can house up
to 4 fixed camera modules for wide area coverage and with a PTZ camera
beneath fitted with a 32x zoom lens of 4.44mm to 142.6mm. The wide
range of fixed camera modules means that the camera can cover a full 360° field of view or 4
specific narrower views to suit the surveillance requirement.
Review: An interesting device to provide wide area surveillance with PTZ
support for close-up or automated tracking of subjects. The single network
connection means that an existing network camera can be upgraded to a multiview
capability without the need for additional network hardware.
Dahua DH-IPC-HF8835FP
This is an 8MP (UHD) box style camera with very high
sensitivity and intelligent video detection capabilities. It is
promoted as a Starlight+ camera. Due to the large format
of the CMOS sensor used, the lens mount is an M43 (Micro
four thirds) bayonet-style connection.
Review: It is likely that lens choice will be limited for some time unless this mount finds more common usage in the security industry.
Various compact mirrorless digital cameras use the M43 format so this may be the best way to provide a variety of options, but
controlled zoom versions may be limited and expensive.
Flir – CC-3103-01-I
This is an IP66 rated corner mounting 3MP IP camera from the Flir Ariel range with
a lens viewing angle designed to provide wall to wall and ceiling to floor coverage
of the surveyed area. It has a curved front plate to ensure no grip is possible and
that no ligature can be attached. A microphone allows sound to be captured and
discrete infrared illumination is available for low or zero visible light use.
Review: This camera is very simple to get up and running and has a wide range of settings to optimise its
performance. Image quality and colour rendition is very good and alarm settings are clearly laid out and
function well. The ease of browser access was a welcome change from some supplier offerings.
FIRE SAFETY
Management & Installation
Protection and Prevention with
Technology and Innovation
Special Supplement in association with:
FIRE SAFETY
Andy Speake is National
Technical Manager at Aico, a Fire
Industry Association member
company. Andy works closely
with a number of leading
industry organisations and helps
with research and development
of new products.
ii
Improved protection
and clarification
Andy Speake looks at the revised
British Standard for domestic fire
alarms
For those of you who are involved – or BS 5839-
6 is the code of practice for the design,
installation, commissioning and maintenance
of fire detection and fire alarm systems in domestic
premises. When it was first introduced in 1995, BS
5839-6 it changed everything. Whether you were a
landlord, a specifier or an installer, here at last was
a clear and detailed set of standards to be
observed. The contents of BS 5839-6 were quickly
adopted and have been standard practice since
then in both existing dwellings and new builds.
Building Regulations and other guidance
documents reference this standard, so its
importance cannot be over emphasised.
BS 5839-6 was revised in 2004 and then again
in 2013, both times taking into consideration
technological developments and revising best
practice accordingly. It’s been around a decade
between each set of revisions so why, just six years
since the last set of revisions, was a new version
released this year on the 30th April?
The answer isn’t to be found in new technology
but in the will of professionals in housing, fire and
safety to improve the level of fire protection in
domestic dwellings, which ultimately provides
residents with a greater chance of escape
unharmed from a fire in their home.
Whilst there have been a number of minor
revisions within BS 5839-6:2019, plus multiple
definitions that have been updated throughout, the
biggest changes by far apply to the grades of
alarms and the type/level of protection for each
identified dwelling. The Grade determines the type
of alarm to be used and the Category the level of
protection required.
Changes to Grades
Under BS 5839-6, Fire Alarms are classified into
Grades, from A to F. Grades B and E have been
removed in 2019, but with Grade D being the
current most common for domestic properties that
will form the focus of this piece.
Under the previous standard, Grade D required
one or more interlinked mains powered Smoke
Alarms (and Heat Alarms if required), each with an
integral back-up supply; the back-up supply to be in
the form of a rechargeable lithium or alkaline battery.
Under the revised BS 5839-6, Grade D has been
replaced with Grades D1 and D2 which differ in
terms of the back-up power supply:
• D1 calls for a tamper-proof standby supply
consisting of a battery or batteries, with lithium
being the standard battery type. These are long
life battery cells lasting the recommended lifespan
of the alarm and are designed so they cannot
easily be removed by the user. Grade D1 alarms are
the preferred option for social housing as they
remove the risk factor.
• D2, on the other hand, requires an integral
standby supply consisting of a battery or batteries
(usually 9 volt PP3) which need to be replaced at
regular intervals throughout the life of the alarm by
the user.
Changes to these Grades provides greater
clarity for alarm specifiers and installers, which is
welcomed.
Whilst Grade D alarms feature most heavily in
BS 5839-6:2019 Grade F systems also warrant
mention here due to changes in Scottish legislation
earlier this year which permits their use. Grade F
systems use battery only powered alarms. As with
Grade D, Grade F has now been divided into F1 and
F2 in the same fashion as that noted above.
Property Types Get New
Minimum Levels of protection
Under BS 5839-6 different classes of premises are
identified and the minimum Grade of fire alarm
www.psimagazine.co.uk
system and Category of fire protection provided for
that specific type of property are listed. It is here,
in the 2019 revisions, that we have seen the
biggest changes that will have a major impact on
what type of Fire Alarms are fitted and where. In
the main this is due to an increase in the Category
of fire protection from LD3 where previously listed,
which requires one mains-powered Optical Alarm
in the hallway and another upstairs on the landing,
interconnected together, to Category LD2. LD2
involves additional alarm coverage, with a Heat
Alarm in the kitchen and a further Smoke alarm in
the main living area; once again all interconnected.
This upgrade in fire protection is most notable
in existing rental properties and Houses in Multiple
Occupation (HMOs):
• Existing two – three-storey maisonettes and
houses in the rental sector have now been
upgraded from the low Category of fire protection
(LD3) to the medium Category LD2 and graded D1,
i.e. mains-powered alarm with tamper-proof
battery back-up power. New build properties of
this nature remain LD3, unless a risk assessment
indicates otherwise.
• Existing Houses in Multiple Occupation
(HMOs) have been set as Category of LD2 whereas
before it was a mixture of LD2 and LD3 depending
on the nature of the property and inhabitants.
Grade D1 is now the requirement
Other property types that have made an
appearance in the BS 5839-6 property
classification are supported housing and shortterm
holiday lets. Both are allocated the highest
category of protection, Grade D1, LD1.
BS 5839-6:2019 is a code of practice for fire detection and fire
alarm systems in domestic premises, not a set of legal
requirements; there is no penalty if an organisation or
individual chooses to ignore the standard and no date for
‘compliance’
Other Changes of Note
Weekly alarm testing was previously
recommended in BS 5839-6 but this has been
changed to monthly (apart from Grade A systems).
Although weekly testing of alarms remains ideal,
it’s not a realistic expectation, whereas monthly is
far more manageable and therefore likely. The
important message is that users continue to test
their alarms at regular intervals.
Recommendations contained within the NFCC
Specialised Housing Guide regarding all fire
detection, alarm and transmission / signalling to
an Alarm Receiving Centre has been incorporated
into BS 5839-6:2019, which is useful and
recognises that valuable document.
Carbon Monoxide Alarms have been
acknowledged for the first time in BS 5839-6 2019
as they are increasingly been installed alongside
Fire Alarms systems or incorporated within them.
BS 5839-6 states that mains powered Carbon
Monoxide Alarms conforming to BS EN 50291 and
installed in compliance with BS EN 50292 may also
be interlinked with the fire detection and alarm
system if the manufacturer of all the components
makes such a recommendation.
BS 5839-6:2019 is a code of practice for fire
detection and fire alarm systems in domestic
premises, not a set of legal requirements; there is
no penalty if an organisation or individual chooses
to ignore the standard and no date for
‘compliance’. However, the standard is considered
best practice and those who choose to ignore it do
so at their own risk. Certainly, social housing
organisations place great emphasis on it and
complying with it is regarded as essential.
Many RSLs have been moving towards LD2
systems over the past year in the anticipation of
the revisions and we are now witnessing a large
number rewriting their alarm specifications
accordingly and planning upgrade programmes.
With the 2019 revisions we have benefitted from
greater clarity and, in a number of cases, an increase
in the level of fire protection. Of course, with this
comes a need for additional alarms per property
which has an associated cost, not just in alarm units
but also installation. Some of this cost can be
mitigated by using wireless alarm interconnection
technology and by using alarms that have been
designed to be quick and easy to install.
With larger Fire Alarm systems comes issues
over control and maintenance as more alarms will
need to be tested, it’s important to be able to
locate the precise alarm which originally triggered
the alarm. In these cases an Alarm Controller
should be considered (especially important if a
Carbon Monoxide Alarm is included in the system).
These wall mounted devices feature test, silence
and locate features, adding a very valuable extra
measure of controllability to an LD2 system.
We’ve lived by BS 5839-6 for almost a quarter of
a century and the standard has served us well;
there’s no doubt it has helped save lives. BS 5839-
6:2019 builds on the success of the original standard
and, if adhered to properly, ensures greater safety
and even better practice in the industry.
Pulse Alert Technology
Fire alarm systems should be able to evacuate
everyone. Relying on audible fire alarm
notification alone, however, disadvantages
people with hearing impairments or those
working or living in a sound-reducing
environment. Even something as simple as
wearing a pair of headphones could prevent
someone from hearing an audible fire evacuation
warning. To truly evacuate everyone from a
building, fire alarms should signal effectively
using light as well as sound.
Klaxon Signals’ Pulse Alert Technology is a
beacon warning system which produces a light
output that can protect most rooms with just a
single device. Utilising new LED lighting
technology derived from automotive applications,
it disperses light evenly and efficiently,
maximising its effectiveness. Its patented
electronic design also maximises electrical
efficiency and reduces current
consumption, minimising the cost
of ownership and allowing more
devices to be installed on a
single alarm system.
Pulse Alert Technology
provides all the benefits that
an EN54-23-compliant
system can bring, whilst
answering all of the design
challenges in doing so. This
means a greater coverage area with
lower current consumption – and greater
flexibility for system designers and reduced the
cost of ownership for end users – without
compromising on evacuation notification
performance.
Pulse Alert Technology
Pulse Alert is able to provide EN54-23-compliant
visual alarm signalling without any increase in
power consumption because of three
technological breakthroughs:
• Intelligent Power Management -Pulse Alert
converts power intelligently, minimising power
usage and presenting a near-perfect current
source to fire alarm panels. This means the Sonos
Pulse and Nexus Pulse VADs require less power
than previous models, while also exceeding
EN54-23 light output requirements.
• LED Drive - Pulse Alert features the latest,
high power LED technology and advanced LED
drive circuitry, further improving efficiency, light
output performance and long-term device
reliability. Sonos Pulse and Nexus Pulse LED
circuits are both designed to provide over five
years of continual operation, without a
degradation of light output.
• Lens Technology - The optics for both ceilingmount
and wall-mount versions are optimised to
produce an even light dispersion over the covered
area. This minimises ‘hot spots’ and ensures that
all the available light is contributing to alerting
people of a fire emergency.
Coverage
The simpler an evacuation system is, the more
effective it is likely to be. Sonos Pulse and Nexus
Pulse fulfil evacuation requirements with just a
single device for most rooms. Ceiling-mounted
devices are rated at 15-meter diameter coverage,
while wall-mounted devices can cover an 11.5 x
11.5 metre square room. System design
requirements are therefore made
easier, evacuation messages
are clearer and more
people are protected than
ever before.
Energy Efficiency
Pulse Alert technology
ensures that Klaxon’s
VADs notify all personnel
of a fire emergency whilst
also reducing the power
consumption of each device. This
means that systems can be upgraded without
imposing any restrictions on the number of
devices used or compromising system
performance. Low power consumption is vital to
fire system designers and installers – Sonos Pulse
and Nexus Pulse ensure that all buildings can
provide the very best fire evacuation.
Low Installation Costs
Pulse Alert VADs devices lower installation costs,
making the latest fire evacuation technology
affordable – without compromising performance.
A wider coverage area per device reduces both
the number of devices required and expensive
cabling requirements, whilst low current
consumption removes the need for additional
power supplies.
With a greater coverage pattern, fewer devices
are needed to cover open areas. Sonos Pulse
ceiling-mount units have a 15-metre coverage
diameter capable of covering a 10 x 10 metre room
with a single device.
DOWNSIZING TECHNOLOGY TO MITIGATE
BIGGER SECURITY RISKS
Roland Martin-
Bessey, Operations
Director at Hochiki
Europe, looks at the
global component
shortage and what
this means for
manufacturers and
installers
Hochiki Europe, visit:
The key issue affecting all industries today
is a simple but important one. Over the last
decade, there has been a huge rise in
demand for micro electrical components.
Manufacturers are having to find new ways
build devices, without increasing unit size. As a
result, producers of electronic components are
meeting demand by downsizing everything they
create.
Much of the technology we use today
incorporates similar components all fitted to a
printed circuit board (PCB) which determines
the function of the product. To correctly fit each
component and keep production moving,
manufacturing lines need to be equipped with
the right machinery.
As the miniaturization of mainstream
technology continues, manufacturers in all
industries must follow suit. This is especially
true in the life safety sector. Life safety
solutions are not as space-hungry as products
like mobile phones. This means there is no great
need for them to become smaller. However,
when these new, smaller components are
manufactured, the predecessors are usually
phased out, leaving a shortage for the rest of
the industry, a process known as component
obsolescence.
To keep production going in the face of
component obsolescence, life safety
manufacturers need to have a strategy that is
built with the future in mind, and this must be a
key focus for any R&D team. R&D divisions,
regardless of sector, should understand how
technology might change, or is changing, and
how their business may need to adapt to suit.
For example, at Hochiki Europe, we use various
Manufacturing for the future
There are a number of relatively straightforward measures manufacturers can
take to combat the risks posed by the component shortage. We have recently
invested hundreds of thousands of pounds in our production capabilities and
equipment to ensure we can handle the smallest of components. By being aware
that such an investment will be required for long term success we can plan our
operations more effectively, factoring in any costs as part of business planning.
We must always be looking for new ways to increase productivity, outputs
and everything in between, despite challenges like the global component
shortage. Getting ahead of the curve is key, and by maintaining close
relationships with suppliers and customers and investing in capabilities, our
industries will be able to continue to operate efficiently now and into the future.
software tools to ensure our R&D teams can
track such changes and use the data to develop
plans that will ensure the business can continue
to operate.
Manufacturers will have a quota of the
number of products they need to be able
produce to keep up with customer demand and
maintain a suitable level of stock, meaning
there should never be a product shortage.
Meeting this quota requires a certain number of
components, and if these are not available then
manufacturing processes can be very quickly
thrown out of sync, causing issues for the
manufacturer, customers and end users.
To address this risk, we need to be forward
thinking and more collaborative. This is why we
work closely with suppliers to ensure they are
top of the list for product deliveries.
Simultaneously, we are also planning well in
advance to ensure our component stock is
continually maintained. We are ensuring we
have enough components to maintain a steady,
constant stream of production.
As with any product, an increase in demand
drives costs up. When the cost of individual
components rises, so too does the cost of the
final product. Manufacturers then have to make
a difficult decision – how much of the cost do
they pass on to their customers and how do
they communicate the increase?
Essentially, there is no right or wrong way to
do this and it very much depends on the
manufacturer. One thing that is constant,
however, is the need for excellent relationship
and stakeholder management processes.
Another reason why manufacturers must
manage the risks of the global component
shortage effectively is for installers themselves.
If a company is unable to produce solutions,
installers could find themselves without the
products they need to fulfil a project. Being in
such a position could mean that installers then
have to turn down work, which is bad from a
reputation and business perspective. In
addition, there is another risk that customers
could re-specify projects to incorporate other,
less advanced systems. It is therefore essential
that, throughout the supply chain, risk is
managed, mitigated and communicated so all
parties can continue to operate as they should.
FIRE SAFETY
Voice is choice for emergency response
www.vimpex.co.uk
In modern buildings there may be literally
dozens of different types of audible warning
specified; fire alarm systems, emergency exit
alarms, lifts/elevators, intrusion alarm systems,
and each can have their own audible warning
device. In industrial settings there may also be
audible warning devices on production
equipment, assembly lines, and on forklifts.
With so many different types of audible
warning devices, it can be confusing to building
occupants when an alarm sounds. Is it the fire
alarm? An emergency exit alarm? Or has a unit
of production equipment jammed?
To counter these conflicting responses, voice
sounders are now an established and effective
contribution to voice evacuation systems in
public and commercial buildings, and can be a
viable alternative to more complex VA (Voice
Alarm) systems. The concept of voice
commands to instruct and direct people on how
to leave a building or other area during an
emergency is widely recognised as the most
efficient and sensible way to fulfill an important
safety-critical job.
The Vimpex Fire-Cryer® ranges of Voice
Sounders, are good examples of how voice
technology is proving to reduce delay and
response rate in evacuation times. Fire-Cryer®
can be used as a single message 24 V
conventional voice sounder on any
sounder/notification alarm circuit or as part of a
sophisticated multi-message, multilingual
evacuation system. Alongside the Fire-Cryer®
ranges, Vimpex has developed an exciting new
range of Identifire products to provide the Fire,
Detection and Alarm sector with a variety of
sleek, aesthetically-pleasing evacuation and
alarm accessories that offer a consistent look
and feel across the entire range.
strategically important development for Vimpex and is the first
stage of a strategy that will use UL for all future strategically
important products since the UL brand is recognised worldwide
as a mark of quality, safety and reliability.
Managing Director James Jones (pictured) says: “Following
the opening of the company’s new UK manufacturing
production facility, this first certification by UL Laboratories is
yet another step in the company’s ambitious plans that will
allow the Vimpex to innovate and increase its product ranges,
