6 Life’s A Beach
Nothing beats a day out at the beach! If your pooch enjoys digging in the sand and dipping their paws in the sea, read our guide to the best beaches for a doggy day out in East Anglia… Suffolk Aldeburgh Restrictions: Dog ban on main part of the beach from 1 May to 30 September Type: Pebbles Though a dog ban remains in place throughout the summer, the north part of the beach from Wentworth Hotel to Thorpeness is dog-friendly year round - make sure you stay within the designated areas. There’s plenty of pubs and restaurants nearby to refuel after a long walk. Covehithe Restrictions: Dog friendly year round Type: Sandy One of Suffolk’s best kept secrets! Experience Suffolk’s wilderness on this beautiful beach. Dunwich Heath Felixstowe Restrictions: Summer ban on the main beach from 1 May to 30 September Type: Sand & shingle The main beach enforces a summer ban but there is a dog-friendly area from the Spa Pavilion to Arwela Road, however dogs must be kept on leads. Lowestoft Restrictions: Summer ban on the entire beach from 1 May to 30 September Type: Sand & shingle Best avoided during the summer, however dogs are allowed north of Gunton Denes, but be vigilant of prohibitions. Southwold Restrictions: Summer ban from 1 May to 30 September Type: Sandy Unfortunately, families take over during the summer but it’s a great place to visit during winter months where you’ll often have a large part of the beach to yourself. Thorpeness Restrictions: Dog friendly year round, except a small section which places a summer ban Type: Pebbles Most of the beach is dog friendly year round. Tides can be quite rough so it’s not always suitable for doggy paddling. Walberswick Dunwich Heath Restrictions: Dog friendly year round Type: Shingle A great beach for dogs who love to run, play and splash. Parts of the beach are steep, especially at high tide, but wonderful walks to Walberswick and Southwold can be enjoyed. Bear in mind that it is also the home of RSPB Minsmere so some restrictions may apply on the Heath during nesting season. Walberswick Restrictions: Dog friendly year round Type: Sand With its dunes, large sandy beach and beautiful village with a dog-friendly pub, it’s doggy heaven. 7
