How physiotherapy can help your pet
A form of physiotherapy has been used on people for centuries but it wasn’t
until around 35 years ago that the principles started to be applied to our pets.
After all, animals are essentially made up of the same things we are!
The aim of physiotherapy is to reduce the pain caused by disease, injury or
surgery, improve function and ultimately help our pets enjoy life again. There
are many pet health problems physiotherapy can help with. This includes:
Post-operatively – Surgeon’s skills can repair and treat many conditions
and physiotherapy can be hugely beneficial following surgery. It aids the
healing process, reduces pain, increases muscle strength and joint use,
leading to a faster recovery and better return to a happy life. Conditions
include: cruciate ligament repair, fracture repair, arthroscopy & ‘slipped disc’
surgery.
Degenerative conditions – Often these patients suffer with compensatory
discomfort as well as the condition itself. With the right care pain can
be reduced, the degeneration slowed and the quality of life improved.
Conditions include: arthritis, joint dysplasia & spondylosis.
Soft tissue injury – This kind of injury can cause
considerable inflammation and pain usually after
a sudden trauma (especially common working
and sporting dogs). Physiotherapy helps the
healing process, reduce the pain and restore the
pet’s movement. Conditions include: muscle tears,
ligament sprains, inflammation & tension.
Fitness – Physiotherapy treatments, especially
hydrotherapy, aims to improve fitness and
performance in working and sporting dogs.
Weight loss – Obesity is growing problem in the
pet world and exercise is one of the best ways
to tackle it. However, exercising an overweight
animal can be problematic and potentially injury.
Physiotherapy can provide a structured, low impact
and safe programme to aid the pet’s weight loss.
Wound healing & scar tissue reduction –
Whether from surgery or injury wound healing can
be complex and physiotherapy can help here too.
It aims to aid the healing process, reduce bacteria
and reduce scar tissue restriction.
More effective treatments and surgeries are
available to our pets than ever before and
physiotherapy is proving to be a valuable part of
the pet healthcare evolution. Many vets have seen
the benefits of physiotherapy for their patients and
sometimes even recoveries better than they thought
possible.
