OUTGOING PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
I am so grateful for the opportunity to serve as President
of the WWBA. Lest there be any doubt, the successes
the WWBA has had this past year are due to all of
the hard working, dedicated, members who assisted me
in so many ways. We certainly are a unique group of
focused, hardworking, dedicated judges, attorneys and
law students. I have no doubt our members raise the bar
of professionalism through their zealous advocacy which
I have seen conducted with the utmost professionalism
and respect. Let us continue to serve as a model of
excellence where our over 500 members will always have
a meaningful impact and positive influence on others
and where the spirit of professionalism, camaraderie, and support shine through.
I am incredibly thankful to my Executive Board and all of the committee cochairs
for their guidance, support, and assistance during my term. In total, this year’s
WWBA team put together 40 programs and CLEs, in addition to our “regular”
monthly events such as the supportive Women in Professional Transition meetings,
the informative brown bag lunch series with Judge Linda Jamieson, and our ever
growing Book Club.
This past year has been tremendously rewarding for me, in large part, due to
the very successful pilot year of the newly formed mentor program. Connecting with
my mentee and the dozens of Pace law students was motivating and energizing. We
had over 90 law students join our ranks, each of whom was hungry for mentorship,
access to attorneys in the Westchester legal community, knowledge of our diverse
areas of practice, and guidance on the different paths one may take in the law. Our
mentees and their fellow law students are our future, both in the WWBA and the
legal profession.
The feedback received from our mentor program survey was overwhelmingly
positive and every participant, both mentors and mentees, has expressed a desire to
see the mentor program continue into the future. Based on my personal experience,
and those mentors who have provided verbal and written feedback about their
mentor role this past year, the mentor relationship has been very rewarding for both
the mentors and the mentees. Thus, we have now formed a Mentor Committee
which I will co-chair with Sherry Bishko and the Hon. Christine Sproat, to build upon
our pilot year and ensure the success of our mentor program for the coming years.
As I mentioned during my incoming President’s message at last year’s Installation
of Officers in June 2018, hindsight is 20/20. Hindsight is essential to not only
understanding the inroads women have made, particularly in the legal profession,
but also in understanding the current issues facing women in today’s social and legal
climate.
O u t g o i n g P r e s i d e n t ’ s M e s s a g e ( c o n t i n u e d ) . . .
This year the WWBA is proud to honor one of our esteemed co-founding
“mothers,” the Honorable Sondra M. Miller. Judge Miller is a trail blazer, a woman of
many “firsts,” and a role model for so many, including myself. She is a pillar of equal
justice for all and has made many inroads to where we are today. Her willingness to
share her time with others, mentoring and guiding them, is evidenced by her open
invitation to meet with and mentor all of the WWBA Foundation scholarship winners
over the years. It is also evidenced by her mentorship of so many new lawyers
and law students even through today. There is no doubt that she has, time and time
again, helped shape and guide the legal profession for the betterment of all, as a
mentor, role model, zealous advocate and judge. For all of her achievements, and for
paving the way for future generations, we recognize and applaud Judge Miller.
I have truly enjoyed every minute spent serving as your President. Yes, it was
a very “busy” year, but the rewards were immense and certainly outweighed the
additional time put on my schedule. I know I will look back fondly on my term and will
continue to expand upon the wonderful connections formed. I leave knowing there
is still much work to be done to support our mission of expanding opportunities for
women and raising the level of competence and integrity in the legal profession.
However, I am departing with a renewed sense of hope and confidence that through
our dedicated, unique, hardworking members we will continue to blaze a trail where
none currently exists, influence the future of the legal profession through positive
mentorship, and bring to the table a restored professionalism that is often forgotten
in the adversarial nature of our work.
It is my privilege to now pass the proverbial torch to my colleague and friend,
Angela Morcone Giannini. I know that the WWBA will continue to push towards its
mission and that we will continue to prove the absolute relevance of a women’s bar
association under her strong, able, and fierce leadership, of course together with
the guidance and support of her amazing, incoming Executive Board. Angela will
lead, as Judge Miller has over her lifetime, with grace, dignity and the utmost
professionalism. I depart feeling very motivated to carry the WWBA’s mission forward
and with my renewed hope of meaningfully contributing to our mission by
working closely with Angela and successor Presidents in developing the WWBA’s
future pipeline through our ever expanding mentor program.
In closing, I must thank my law partner, Jane Bilus Gould, for getting me
involved in the WWBA as a young attorney, inspiring me to lead, and for all of her
support this past year. To my family, thank you for your patience and understanding
given all of my “other” commitments and for sharing this journey with me with
unending encouragement and praise. You are the best and I am so blessed to have
all of you by my side.
INCOMING PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
A watershed moment is a turning point; the exact moment
that changes the direction of an activity or situation.
That moment for women and families of Westchester
County and the State of New York occurred in the mid
1970’s when a group of twelve women including our
honoree, The Honorable Sondra M. Miller, gathered in
a living room here in Westchester recognizing the need
to advance the social, economic and legal status for
women through the law while promoting justice for all,
regardless of gender. In order to accomplish this, they
established the Westchester Women’s Bar Association.
The mission of our organization remains the same today.
Many have ideas, but these women put their ideas in motion and acted upon
them. They saw far and went far. But these women did not stop there. In 1980, they
worked to establish the statewide organization known as the Women’s Bar Association
of the State of New York which we refer to as WBASNY and the WWBA today is
one of its largest chapters having great influence on pending legislation and future
legislation impacting the lives of women, children and families.
The WWBA continues today as strong as ever due to the tireless efforts and
sacrifices of our Past Presidents, Officers, Directors and Committee Chairs. It has
always impressed me how our members work so hard to bring ideas into action not
for their own recognition but for the betterment of our membership and community.
One perfect example is the newly formed Mentorship program established by our
now immediate past president, Kim Berg. This type of giving back is symbolic of the
WWBA and I am proud and committed to continuing this program and call upon
those in our audience who are not already participating to join as mentors. Kim has
been an inspiration to me this year and I have learned so much about leadership from
her while serving as President Elect for which I am very grateful.
I have always believed that it is a privilege to practice law. As lawyers we take
an oath to support the Constitutions of the United States and of the State of New
York. We are privileged to be advocates for those in need whether an individual,
company or organization. We are indeed the voices for those that need to be
heard. We make their cause, our cause. We are the indispensable guardians of our
system of justice ensuring there is an organized resolution of disputes where all are
given a full and fair opportunity to be heard. As officers of the Court, it is our duty
and responsibility to conduct ourselves in a civil manner, respectful of both our
adversaries and the litigants. When we act civilly toward each other, we promote the
values of a democratic society and the very integrity upon which our justice system
was built. While no system is perfect, in my opinion, there is no better system in
the world today than the great democracy in which we live.
I n c o m i n g P r e s i d e n t ’ s M e s s a g e ( c o n t i n u e d ) . . .
I see my role as President also as a privilege. I thank the Presidents before me
for their confidence in me and promise to continue their good work toward our
mission with civility and integrity. I very much look forward to working with our
newly elected Officers and Directors and our Executive Director to ensure that the
voices of our members and our community are indeed heard. I thank my law partner
Lucille and my entire firm for their encouragement and support as I take on this new
role. Most especially, I thank my family for their love, support and sacrifices and for
making every day a better day for me.
Collaboration is an important part of growth, renewal and advancement. As
President, I will be dedicated to this organization’s collaboration with other bar
associations and community groups. I strongly believe it is the responsibility of
our members to reach out to attorneys of all genders, orientations and races to
welcome them as members and encourage them to take on leadership roles within
our organization. Commitment to a forum where different views can be freely
expressed will help us successfully recruit and retain new lawyers which will promote
the advancement of our association and our legal profession.
So please join me as we work toward new watershed moments. I welcome your
ideas and look forward to working with you as “we see far and go far” in the year
ahead!
