GOVT MULLS FINANCIAL
ASSISTANCE TO NEW
TAXI OPERATORS
Amidst a tussle between traditional tourist
taxi operators and app-based service
providers in Goa, the state government
Wednesday announced a scheme
which proposes to provide a financial
assistance to the locals for buying
vehicles for operating a taxi service.
Goa Tourism Development
Corporation (GTDC) chairman
Dayanand Sopte told reporters
the financial scheme was aimed at
providing employment to the Goans
who can now buy vehicles with the
government assistance.
He said the vehicle purchased could
be converted into taxis.
Traditional taxi operators in Goa,
which attracts lakhs of domestic and
foreign tourists throughout the year,
have been opposing 'Goa Miles', the
app-based taxi service introduced by
the GTDC in August last year.
Amidst protests, Chief Minister
Pramod Sawant had asked the tourist
taxi operators to join the app-based
service on a trial basis for a month
before forming their opinion about it.
Sopte said the app-based taxi service
is an accepted norm across the world
and in rest of the country.
"Even those Goans who go to other
cities use the app-based taxi service
and they are happy about it," he
said, adding that such taxi service is
beneficial for development of tourism
in the coastal state.
Sopte claimed that the service has
been gaining popularity since its
introduction.
"We started with 55 taxis and now
the number has reached 1500. All taxi
operators in this service are Goans.
In the first month (of launch), it was
just 1400 trips but the number reached
to 14,000 in December. It has touched
20,000 trips in June," he said.
CM may induct
Lobo in Cabinet
Michael Lobo
Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant
has hinted that there could be a cabinet
reshuffle to induct state Assembly's
Deputy Speaker Michael Lobo.
Sawant on Tuesday night said Lobo,
a two-term BJP MLA from Calangute
Assembly seat in North Goa district,
would be given a "bigger responsibility"
in the state soon.
He was speaking at Lobo's birthday
celebration at Parra village in Mapusa
town of North Goa.
"Lobo has to handle a bigger
responsibility than what he has now.
He will get it soon. He has to serve the
people of entire Goa and not just from
his Assembly constituency," Sawant
said amid applause from the MLA's
supporters.
MALE: Prime Minister Narendra
Modi was conferred with the Maldives'
highest honour "Rule of Nishan
Izzuddeen" on Saturday during his twoday
state visit to the country.
The prestigious award was presented
to Prime Minister Modi by President
Ibrahim Mohamed Solih during a
ceremony in Male.
"The Most Honourable Order of the
Distinguished Rule of Nishan Izzuddeen"
is the Maldives' highest honour accorded
to foreign dignitaries, Foreign Minister
Abdulla Shahid said on Twitter.
The two-day state visit of PM Modi is
aimed at further cementing ties with
the Indian Ocean archipelago.
Under fire, Western
Railways withdraws
massage services
proposal on trains
The Indian Railways has withdrawn its
proposal to provide massage services to
passengers on board trains.
Western Railways had last week
proposed to provide head, neck and foot
massages to the passengers of trains
originating from Indore. However,
senior railway officials did not approve
of the idea. Indore MP Shankar Lalwani
had even written to Union minister
Piyush Goyal, saying that offering such
services in the presence of women was
against the Indian culture.
The facility was to be made available
on 39 trains departing from Indore.
President Solih and PM Modi
exchanged pleasantries upon the prime
minister's arrival at Republic Square
where he was accorded a ceremonial
welcome.
Earlier, PM Modi and President Solih
held delegation-level talks as the two
countries signed a slew of agreements
to strengthen bilateral ties in a number
of key areas including defence.
The prime minister also inspected the
guard of honour.
While PM Modi visited the Maldives
in November 2018 to attend President
Solih's swearing-in, this visit is the
first by an Indian prime minister at a
bilateral level in eight years.
Tariff war! India imposes higher
customs duty on 28 US goods
These 28 US products include highly consumed items like almond,
pulses and walnut, which will hurt the American businesses as
prices of these items will now go up in the Indian markets
Days after the United States withdrew
special trade privileges for India
and hiked duty on Indian products
like steel and aluminium, the Modi
government has also imposed higher
retaliatory tariffs on 28 US products
with effect from today (June 16), an
official notification said. These 28 US
products include highly consumed
items like almond, pulses and walnut,
which will hurt the American
businesses as prices of these items will
now go up in the Indian markets.
The official notification said the
Central Board of Indirect taxes and
its June 30, 2017, notification,
to "implement the imposition of
retaliatory duties on 28 specified goods
Facebook's Calibra
cryptocurrency
wallet launches
in 2020 for users
around the world
After months of rumors and speculation,
Facebook is finally making its
cryptocurrency efforts official. This is
Calibra, a digital wallet that will use
a new cryptocurrency called Libra.
Calibra, which is now a subsidiary
of Facebook, is designed to "provide
financial services that will enable people
to access and participate in the Libra
network," a blockchain technology
developed by Facebook that's getting
support from MasterCard, Visa, PayPal,
eBay, Uber, Lyft and Spotify, among
others. Facebook says it plans to launch
Calibra in 2020, and the service will be
available in Messenger and WhatsApp,
as well as in a standalone app.
When it arrives, Calibra will
let people send and receive Libra
cryptocurrency by simply using a
smartphone. Eventually, Facebook
said, it wants to offer more services for
people and businesses, including the
ability to easily pay bills, buy a cup of
coffee with the scan of a code and use it
to ride public transit without the need
for cash or a physical pass.
administration's change in stance
in its trade policies with several
countries, including China, Mexico,
and India. From June 5, the Donald
Trump administration terminated
India's designation as a beneficiary
developing nation under the key GSP
(Generalised System of Preference)
trade programme. The White House
said India had not assured the US
that it would provide "equitable and
reasonable access" to its markets.
Terming it unfortunate, the
government said India, as part of
bilateral trade discussions, had offered
resolution on significant US requests
to find a mutually acceptable solution
but to no avail. It had also vowed to
"uphold its national interests".
India was the largest beneficiary
of the programme in 2017 with $5.6
billion worth of exports to the US being
given duty-free status, according to a
Congressional Research Service report
issued in January.

First human to set foot on Mars likely
to be a woman, says NASA chief
The first person to set foot on Mars
is likely to be a woman, NASA
Administrator Jim Bridenstine has said.
While Bridenstine did not identify
a specific person, he said that women
are at the forefront of the US space
agency's upcoming plans.
Asked if a woman will go to the Moon
for the first time, Bridenstine said "The
answer is absolutely. In fact, it is likely
to be a woman, the first next person on
the Moon."
"It is also true that the first person
on Mars is likely to be a woman,"
Bridenstine said during a recent
interview on the science and
technology radio talk show "Science
Xiaomi Redmi
K20 Pro AnTuTu
score claims it is
the world's fastest
smartphone yet
Xiaomi is gearing up to launch the
Redmi K20 series in India very soon.
A couple of weeks ago Xiaomi India
Managing Director Manu Jain said the
Redmi K20 and the Redmi K20 Pro are
coming to India in a few weeks from
now. It is expected that the two Redmi
K series phones will hit the Indian
shores by mid of July. The launch date
is yet to be confirmed. Ahead of the
official launch, the AnTuTu score of the
Redmi K20 Pro has been revealed and
going by the numbers it is said to be
the "World's fastest phone" yet. Xiaomi
India is also flaunting the same tag of
being the world's fastest phone.
"It's time for K-BOOM! Which is
the World's Fastest Smartphone?
#RedmiK20Pro of course! @Qualcomm
Snapdragon 855, triple cameras, and
so much more. This is what a flagship
should be. Can't wait to launch it in
India soon! Mi fans, have you been
keeping count?" Jain notes via a
Twitter post on Monday. By revealing
the AnTuTu score Xiaomi is clearly
targeting all the latest flagships like the
OnePlus 7 Pro, among others.
Xiaomi reveals that in AnTuTu
Redmi K20 Pro scores 388,803 points
that it is way higher than OnePlus 7
Pro's AnTuTu score or score of any
other recently launched flagship
smartphone. This comes as a surprise
for many as the Redmi K20 Pro is
a mid-range smartphone while the
OnePlus 7 Pro is a part of the premium
smartphone segment.
Only electric
vehicles to be sold
after 2030 in India:
Niti Aayog
New Delhi: NITI Aayog has proposed
that after 2030, only electric vehicles
should be sold in India. The think tank
believes that this will expend the scope
of the clean fuel technology beyond
two-and three-wheelers in the country.
It may be noted that a panel headed by
NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant had
suggested earlier that only EV (threewheelers
and two-wheelers) with engine
capacity of up to 150 cc should be sold
from 2025 onwards.
According to the Niti Aayog, as
transport remains the most demanding
sector for oil, about 100% electric
vehicle sale by 2030 may reduce India’s
import dependence by a big margin. A
joint study by NITI Aayog and Rocky
Mountain Institute, USA suggests that
India can save 64% of anticipated roadbased
mobility-related energy demand
and 37% of carbon emissions in 2030
by pursuing a shared, electric, and
connected mobility future. This would
result in a reduction of 156 Mtoe in
Diesel and Petrol consumption for that
year and net saving of roughly Rs. 3.9
Lakh Crore in 2030 at present oil prices.
As per Niti Aayog, the barriers in
wider adoption of electric vehicles
lie in areas of consumer perception,
efficiency of batteries, driving range,
speed of EVs, charging time, creation
of infrastructure for charging, battery
recycling and technology development.
The most important component -
Li-Ion battery - is very expensive
in the country due to no domestic
manufacturing making the price of
electric cars very high.
is committed to making sure that we
have a broad and diverse set of talent.
And we are looking forward to the first
woman on the Moon," he said.
Facebook's new app
'Study' to pay users for
sharing data on app
usage
Facebook on Tuesday launched an app
that will pay users to share information
with the social media giant about which
apps they're using.
The company previously rolled out
two similar apps that tracked what
activities people did on their phones.
But both were shut down after drawing
criticism for infringing on privacy and
violating Apple's App Store guidelines.
Facebook said the new app, called
Study, is different than the previous
two and was built from scratch. And
it is only available on the Google Play
Store, though Facebook said it might
work to expand it to iOS in the future.
The new app will collect information
about which apps people are using
and for how long, including which
app features are used. That could give
Facebook valuable insight into how
people use its competitors' services.
Facebook said it will not track
passwords or account IDs and it will
periodically remind people that the app
is collecting their data.
But some privacy experts are concerned
users will still not know exactly what
information they are sending.
Many people skip reading privacy
policies, noted mobile app security
researcher Will Strafach, who studied
the underlying code of Facebook's
Research app earlier this year. And
if Facebook updates the privacy
guidelines, there is no guarantee they
will be upfront about it, he said.
"I think that it's Facebook's job to
make it extremely clear (how it works),"
he said. "They haven't done that in the
past."
MIT algorithm
helps robots guess
where humans are
going next
Automation is increasingly a reality in
the workforce, and that means robots
working alongside humans. But there's
a problem: robots are often lousy at
predicting where humans are going,
leading them to either freeze up or risk
collisions with their fleshy counterparts.
Thankfully, MIT researchers have
developed an algorithm that better
predicts the paths of nearby humans.
Rather than simply rely on the
distance of points on a person's
body, like common systems, the new
approach aligns segments of a person's
trajectory with a collection of reference
movements. Moreover, it considers
timing as well -- it knows you're not
about to change course if you've just
started moving.
Robots should be more confident as a
result, but not reckless. In simulations
based on earlier human motion
data, automatons were less prone to
panicking and would quickly get back
to work after a person walked by.
There's a lot to do before this algorithm
can reach the real world, but there's
obvious utility here. Factory and
warehouse robots could work closely
with humans without slowing down or
risking injuries. MIT added that it could
also be used for other interactions, such
as recognizing actions and gestures.
Simply put, robots might get better at
understanding human behavior as a whole.

TTAG submits recommendations
to boost tourism in Goa
While expressing worries over the
decreasing foreign visitors, Goa's
tourism body in its recommendations
has suggested various measures to the
state government to boost tourism.
Travel and Tourism Association of
Goa (TTAG), an apex tourism body
in the state, after holding several
consultative meeting prepared a 'white
paper' which was submitted to state
Tourism Minister Manohar Ajgaonkar
on Thursday.
The suggestion includes reduction in
taxes which makes the Indian coastal
state, an expensive destination.
The detailed white paper points out
that the financial year 2018-19 saw a
50 per cent decline in Russian charter
flights and 62,000 lesser Russian tourists
in 2018-19 as compared to 2017-18.
In the period from 2017-18, airport
arrival and departure figures saw a
decline of more than 21 per cent, it
states adding that "while domestic
tourism has seen an upswing of 25 per
cent to 30 per cent, the appreciable drop
in average room rates and occupancies
packages for general surgery, eye
surgery, heart care, and neurosurgery.
Ahmedabad:
Ahmedabad, known as the
‘Manchester of India’ is also a growing
medical hub. With world-class
hospitals, lots of NRIs reportedly prefer
Ahmedabad for medical treatment.
Get touristy with - Sabarmati
Ashram, Adalaj Stepwell, Teen
Way forward - There is a need to
tackle several issues, including
slow infrastructural development,
government support, accreditations
and promotions, insurance and allied
services. These barriers are hindering
the full-fledged growth of the medical
tourism industry.
There are solutions, however.
Small adjustments are necessary to
effectively harness the advantages
that India holds within the industry.
India provides quality, cost-effective
healthcare, supported by hospitality
options. Since English is widely
spoken, language is also not a barrier.
Medical tourism ideally should
be able to offer quality healthcare
services with options for leisure and
pleasurable sightseeing experiences.
With the rapid growth in facilities at
medical destinations and a plethora of
sightseeing options, India is well on its
way to becoming an industry leader.
across Goa, indicates a fall in the
quality of domestic tourism."
The apex body also mentioned that
there is also a sharp drop in the number
of charter flights which arrived in Goa
from 1,128 in 2013 to 840 now.
Pointing out to the problem areas,
the white paper states the sudden
unorganised boom in the growth of
the unregulated bed and breakfast
and homestay facilities has led to
an unhealthy surge in oversupply of
accommodation for tourists, disrupting
pricing levels, which has impacted the
hospitality industry.
There is no adequate infrastructure
which can host large scale MICE
events with a capacity of over 3,000
guests. The largest banquet facility in
a starred hotel can host a maximum of
1,000 guests, it adds.
TTAG said that there is a lack of
entertainment avenues for tourists,
apart from beaches with an overreliance
on beaches and no serious
effort to diversify Goas tourism
offering bouquet.
High taxes, visa fees make Goa
an expensive tourism destination
- drop visa fees, rationalise tax to
make tourism products cheaper, the
association said.
TTAG has also said that there is lack
of incentives for charter tour operators
and there is need to revive glory days
of charter tourism by incentivising
operators.
International Sushi Day: Delhi is the
Sushi capital of India, says survey
Sushi, the Japanese delicacy, has its
loyal following. The carefully curated
and cooked vinegared rice roll with
fish or seafood or raw vegetables has
quite a fan base in India, especially
Delhi, and a recent survey by Swiggy,
an online food delivery platform
reaffirms it.
Going by the data, there has been an
increase in orders of Sushi by nearly 50
per cent since January 2019. Demands
have also been recorded from smaller
cities like Guwahati and Ludhiana.
The survey also reveals that the
top 10 fan favourite Sushi dishes are
Dynamite Sushi, Asparagus Tempura
Sushi, Crispy Chicken Sushi, Ebi
Tempura Sushi, Spicy Veg Tempura
Sushi, Tempura Prawn Sushi, Veg
California Sushi, California Roll Sushi,
Philly Avocado Cucumber Sushi, and
Among them, people have developed
quite a taste for the Dynamite Sushi,
contains a piece of prawn tempura and
vegetables like radish, avocado and
cucumber.
Apparently Indians like Sushi for
dinner. In fact, 70 per cent of Sushi
Talking luxury
at Cannes Lions
festival
Attracting young spenders who are
passionate about luxury is one of the
big talking points at this year's Cannes
Lions Festival of Creativity, taking
place on the French Riviera.
The annual festival brings thousands
of creatives together from around the
globe to discuss, debate and disrupt
the future of brand communications,
marketing and advertising.
In the luxury sector, tech-savvy young
people are becoming big spenders, big
consumers, and big brands are having
to adapt and innovate to please them,
reports Damon Embling from Cannes.
One report last year showed Millennials
and Generation Z driving 85 per cent of
luxury sales growth around the world.
Creating a 'special experience'
Lucie Greene, worldwide director
for JWT Intelligence at Wunderman
Thompson, explains: "What we see,
not only as a product, but also a way of
marketing is this idea of experiential
marketing and experiential innovation.
"So this is not only based on...
Millennials' and GenZ's spending on
aspirational experiences – and that
is part of your curated social media
identity – but brands are realising that
if you create a really special experience
or collaboration with an artist, you are
more likely to share that.
"You are also seeing a lot of emphasis
from the brands on creating new forms
of entertainment, based upon streaming
and sound channels like podcasts."
Ethical and sustainable luxury
Today's luxury buyers also have a
growing appetite for ethical and sustainable
goods, something the communications
industry is working to reflect.
"Whether that's vegan leather, or like
Stella McCartney teaming up with a
biotech company like Bolt Threads to
create leather out of mushroom protein,
or Chanel investing in Sulapac, which
is a biodegradable form of packaging,"
Greene says, "this whole idea of luxury
is being redefined as something that
should be responsible."
Digital first
With most young luxury customers,
smartphone and digital-first platforms
such as Instagram are becoming a key
focus for generating sales.
"I was talking to a publisher of
arguably one of the most important
fashion magazines in the world [and]
they're seeking to move the brand
of the publication forward through
having influencers on Instagram, and
it's a very different way to think about
moving a brand forward rather than to
more traditional broadcast media," says
Bill Kanarick, global head of customer
practice at Ernst & Young.
"So I think luxury brands are doing a
wonderful job in building an influencer
network and using platforms like
Snapchat and like Instagram to move
their brands into the future."
Anup Jalota on Bigg Boss 13: ‘I am going to be a part
of the show, might co-host with Salman Khan’
Bhajan singer Anup Jalota has
revealed that he is going to be a part
of reality show Bigg Boss 13 this year.
He had participated in the reality show
last year and had entered the house
with his student Jasleen Matharu. The
two portrayed themselves as a real life
couple and kept the viewers guessing
till the end.
In an interview with Hindi Rush,
TikTok now has 120
million monthly
active users in India
2019 has brought some bumps to
TikTok’s progress in India, including a
brief removal of its app from Google and
Apple’s app stores in April. However,
the social video app is now firing on
all cylinders again in India, telling the
Economic Times that it has 200 million
users in the country, of which 120
million are active every month.
This is the backdrop for TikTok’s
latest campaign in India, which comes
with the hashtag #MyTikTokStory. It
appears to be an attempt to stimulate
all kinds of videos on TikTok beyond
the music-focused dancing and miming
clips that it’s best known for. Cooking,
DIY videos, sports and even pottery are
among the genres that TikTok wants to
see more clips in from Indian users.
“The social media company is hoping
that diverse content will attract more
advertisers to the platform,” is how
the Economic Times described the
motivation for the campaign, which was
kicked off with a ‘Creators Lab’ event
in Mumbai. “There is research which
says peer-generated content is more
sticky, relatable compared to just brandgenerated
content,” said Sachin Sharma,
head of ad sales at TikTok’s parent
company Bytedance’s Indian subsidiary,
in his pitch to potential advertisers.
Pepsi has already capitalised: its
#SwagStepChallenge apparently
generated 8.6bn views of videos created
by TikTok’s Indian users. The regulatory
environment in India may continue to
throw up challenges, but it’s clear that
TikTok is an important platform in the
country. Not least because, with 120
million monthly active users, it’s not far
off rivalling the total number of musicstreaming-service
users in India (150
million at the last count).
Anup said, “I am going in the
Bigg Boss house.” Adding to the
speculations, he further added, “I
might co-host with Salman Khan.” On
being asked with who would he like
to go as a jodi this year, the singer
replied, “Katrina Kaif.”
Jalota has recently released a new
music video titled Kesaria Balam,
featuring Bigg Boss 12 contestants Somi
The Pacific nation of Samoa has banned
the Elton John biopic Rocketman because
of its depictions of homosexuality.
About 97% of people in Samoa
identify as Christian, and the society is
generally considered conservative and
traditional. Under Samoa’s 2013 Crimes
Act, sodomy is deemed an offense that
is punishable by up to seven years in
prison, even if both parties consent.
Samoa’s principal censor Leiataua
Niuapu Faaui told the Samoa Observer
on Tuesday that the homosexual
activity depicted on screen violated
laws and didn’t sit well with the
country’s cultural and Christian beliefs.
The censor did concede to the
Khan and Deepak Thakur. The two had
made headlines with their chemistry
in the Bigg Boss house. While Deepak
had proposed to her on the show, she
had turned down his offer but the two
continued to remain friends.
Anup and Jasleen had forged a
relationship on the show but had
denied the same outside the Bigg Boss
house. While Anup had distanced
himself from Jasleen post his early
exit, Jasleen continued to call him
her boyfriend until her exit few days
before the final. She later called it a
prank which she decided to play at the
moment of being introduced by Salman
before their entry into the house.
Anup had claimed in an interview to
Spotboye.com, that it was Jasleen who
was supposed to enter the Bigg Boss
house and her father requested him to
go as a guru-shishya jodi.
He accused Jasleen of using him
and said, “She wanted to ride on my
popularity--- which she did. I am a very
positive person and I feel if I can help
someone, I should. If she has used me
for the platform, I am happy that she
succeeded in doing that.”
Samoa bans
Elton John biopic
Rocketman due
A still from the Elton John movie Rocketman
The movie examines John’s sexuality
World Music
Day: Why and
when is it
celebrated
The World Music Day is celebrated every
year on June 21 in over 120 countries
including its country of origin France
where it is known as ‘Fête de la Musique’
meaning “festival of music” to honour
both amateur and professional musicians.
The idea was conceived in the 1970s by
American musician Joel Cohen— then
working for a French radio station—as
he wanted bands to play on the evening
of June 21 to welcome the first day of
summer.
It was finally adopted by France’s
Ministry of Culture in 1982 due to the
efforts of Minister of Culture Jack
Lang and French composer and music
journalist Maurice Fleuret who had
joined the ministry the previous year.
The first Fête de la Musique was held
on the streets of Paris and became a
huge success within a few years.
1985 was celebrated as the European
Year of the Music and, in 1997, the
European Party of Music charter
was signed in Budapest, encouraging
countries outside Europe to join the
annual World Music Day celebrations.
The Fête de la Musique has become an
“event which mobilises the musicians
of the whole world for the pleasure of
the audience of more than 120 countries,
starting with the European countries,”
according to France’s Ministry of Culture.
The country hosts several concerts of
both amateur and professional musicians
to enthral millions of spectators.
Bars and restaurants which usually
close around half past midnight are given
special permission to stay open late into
the night so they can welcome the public.
In cities across the world, musicians
perform for free in public places.
from Rocketman that featured gay sex
and drug use, and John wrote in a joint
statement with the filmmakers that
it was a “sad reflection of the divided
world we still live in and how it can still
be so cruelly unaccepting of the love
between two people.”
Russian gay rights activists and
prominent figures denounced the
move. Although homosexuality is not
criminalized in Russia, animosity
toward gay people remains strong.
people, also banned the 2008 movie Milk,
has taken in about 101 million dollars at
Saaho teaser
trailer: Prabhas,
Shraddha Kapoor
deliver India’s
biggest action
thriller, and it was
worth the wait
India vs Pakistan, World Cup 2019:
Ranveer Singh cheers for Team
India at Old Trafford
Priyanka Chopra
gets a brand new wax
statue in London
The first teaser trailer for Saaho, billed
as India’s biggest action thriller, has
been released, as promised, at 11:23 am
on Thursday. The one-minute Saaho
teaser is a showcase for the visually
dazzling action, with little by way
of plot. But the action certainly is
spectacular, even if it seems inspired
by everything from Mad Max to Blade
Runner, and John Wick to Christopher
Nolan’s The Dark Knight.
Starring Prabhas in the lead role,
Saaho teaser begins with a hint of
romance between his character and
that of Shraddha Kapoor. We see
expansive environments, straight out of
Baahubali. But as the teaser progresses,
we are shown what all the fuss has been
about. From gleaming cityscapes to
high-octane car chases, Saaho seems to
be just what action junkies anticipated.
We see Prabhas standing at the top
of a skyscraper, looking at the neonlit
landscape. Towards the end, we
are shown a tiny glimpse of a desert
action sequence, which seems to be
very similar to Mad Max: Fury Road,
especially in the absurd character
design of a villain. But the centrepiece
is an epic truck flip - although unlike
the Dark Knight, it seems to be entirely
computer generated.
Saaho marks the south debut of
Shraddha Kapoor. It also stars Jackie
Shroff, Mandira Bedi, Arun Vijay,
Gulshan Grover and Neil Nitin Mukesh.
The film is directed by Sujeeth and will
release in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.
Saaho reportedly features the most
expensive action scene in Indian
history. Costing a reported Rs 90 crore,
in the scene, the filmmakers ‘crashed
around 37 cars and five trucks,’ Prabhas
told Khaleej Times. “We wanted
everything real instead of going for
Computer-Generated Imagery (CGI) as
it gives a real impact. Generally, you
have 70 per cent CGI and 30 per cent
real but over here in Abu Dhabi, we
opted for a more real shoot. This will be
something that no one has seen before.”
An Independence Day release, the
film will go up against Akshay Kumar’s
Mission Mangal and John Abraham’s
Batla House at the box office.
New Delhi: Yay! Ranveer Singh is
there is in the house. Of course, he
wouldn't have missed the India vs
Pakistan mega World Cup 2019 clash
for anything in the world.
India take on Pakistan at Emirates
Old Trafford, Manchester, on Sunday,
and the clash is one of the mostawaited
matches of the World Cup and
Ranveer, currently prepping for his
upcoming film '83 in London, took time
Amitabh Bachchan
stuns the Chehre
crew as he delivers
a 14 min take in
one shot
There are reasons why Amitabh
Bachchan is called Bollywood's Big B.
The megastar, 76, delivered a 14-minute
long take in one shot for "Chehre",
leaving the crew in awe of his talent.
The film's producer Anand Pandit
lauded his friend Amitabh for it.
"I believe I am blessed to be a part
of a film that has this historic scene.
Giving a fourteen minute shot is not
only difficult but requires dedication
of a different kind. And add to it the
way Amitji delivered it with finesse.
There was pin drop silence on the sets
followed by thunderous applause. He is
legendary and an inspiration for each
one of us," Pandit said in a statement.
"Chehre" is a mystery thriller with
Amitabh and Emraan Hashmi in
lead roles. The film is directed by
Rumi Jaffrey and produced by Anand
Pandit Motion Pictures and Saraswati
Entertainment Private Limited.
Big B's feat for the film was also
praised by sound artiste Resul
Pookutty.
On June 16, he had tweeted: "Today
Amitabh Bachchan marked another
history in Indian cinema. Last day,
last shot of first schedule of 'Chehre'...
he performed a fourteen minute long
submission in one shot and the whole
crew stood up and clapped! Dear Sir,
undoubtedly you are one of the best in
the world."
To that, Big B said: "Resul .. you give
me far too much credit than I deserve
or am capable of."
out of his busy schedule to cheer for
the Men In Blue.
Trust Ranveer to do things differently
and here he is giving us first-hand
information of the weather and other
details live from the stadium. "Look
who gave a low down of the BIG CLASH
between India & Pakistan LIVE from
Old Trafford before the start of the
game Ranveer Singh himself," tweeted
BCCI ahead of the clash.
Sanjay Dutt to be
face of Centre’s
anti-drug drive
Actor Sanjay Dutt is likely to be named
as the brand ambassador for the Union
government’s anti-drug campaign,
according to officials aware of the
development.
“Dutt is an icon, who has spoken
about his experience with drug abuse.
We felt he will be able to effectively
take the message to the younger people
on why they should steer clear of any
substance abuse,” said a Union social
justice and empowerment ministry
official on condition of anonymity.
The ministry is mandated to oversee
the anti-drug policies and programmes.
It has prepared a national action plan for
drug demand reduction for 2018-2025 to
focus on preventive education, awareness
generation, counselling and treatment
and rehabilitation of drug addicts.
The ministry has identified 127 highrisk
districts for targeted interventions
over the course of a year. A formal
announcement about Dutt’s role is
expected around June 26, which is
observed as the International Day Against
Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
Priyanka Chopra's wax statue was
recently opened to the audience at the
Madame Tussauds museum in London
on Tuesday. The 36-year-old actress,
who is known as a globe icon across
the world had tied up with the Madame
Tussauds team for their four-figure
project which was done in a private
setting at Priyanka Chopra's New York
City home in 2018, as per reports by the
ANI news agency.
Priyanka Chopra's wax statue is
a look sketched on her 2017 Golden
Globes appearance. The wax statue
is seen donning a gold sequin gown
by globally known designer, Ralph
Lauren. The shimmery golden gown
makes Priyanka Chopra's look a hard
to miss one and her fans could not be
more happy that their favourite actress
and former beauty queen is seen in this
avatar one more time.
Esha Deol reveals why
she named her second
daughter Miraya
Esha Deol, who welcomed her second
child with husband Bharat Takhtani on
June 10, is on cloud nine. The Dhoom
actress took to Instagram to make the
big announcement. She also revealed
the name of their daughter - Miraya
Takhtani. Talking about her two
daughters (Radhya and Miraya), Esha
Deol told Mumbai Mirror that there is a
connection between their names.
The 37-year-old actress told the daily,
"When Lord Krishna worships Radha,
it's called Radhya, while Miraya means
a devotee of Lord Krishna. Both the girls
have that in common and I love how
Radhya and Miraya sound together."
Esha also revealed that Radhya is
excited about having a sister. "The day
she figured out that my stomach was
getting bigger, we told her about the
baby and she had been excited about
it ever since. I am sure she will be a
wonderful elder sister," Esha added.

Disappearing Act: This Goan village
emerges from the water just once a year!
Every year in May, the submerged village of Kurdi resurfaces almost magically, confirming the
living memories of the former inhabitants who not only come back to see their lost land, but also
host a traditional festival to celebrate it!
Far from Goa’s din, nestled amidst two
picturesque hills in the Western Ghats,
was a beautiful hamlet called Kurdi.
Every morning, the idyllic village
would wake up to the gurgling stream
of Salaulim river that ran through it
after breaking away from Goa’s largest
river, Zuari.
But all that is in the past because for
the last few decades the village has
been pulling off a disappearing act
every single year!
In other words, this village in Goa
becomes visible for just one month a
year, while the rest of the 11 months, it
dives back into its underwater abode,
thus disappearing from common sight,
as BBC reports.
A woeful tale of awe
Kurdi was once a thriving village
with fertile lands where almost 3,000
residents grew paddy, and lived a life
of simple joys.
An example of secularism, people
of various religions like Christianity,
Hinduism and Islam, all lived together
in the village which housed a number
of temples, a chapel and a mosque.
All seemed well until things began
to radically change in 1961 after the
liberation of Goa from the Portuguese.
It’s strategic position inspired Dayanand
Bandodkar, the first Chief Minister of
Goa to consider the spot for building the
state’s first dam. The construction was
to benefit people all across south Goa.
But the plan meant a disastrous fate
for the people of Kurdi. The need for
water for Goa’s growing population
was to be satiated by submerging
Kurdi, as the dam was to be built
across Salaulim. As per the plan which
included the construction of a reservoir
as well, the dam was to provide almost
400 million litres of water for drinking,
irrigation and industrial purposes.
In 1986, heavy monsoons arrived
pouring over the newly made dam
called Salaulim Irrigation Project and
the village was completely submerged,
pushing its reluctant residents to
move- lock, stock, and barrel.
As many as 634 families were
displaced from their land, and were
compensated with agricultural and
residential land 15 kilometres away in
Vaddem and Valkinim.
“He (Dayanand) said it will drown
our village, but our sacrifice will be for
the greater good,” recalls 75-year-old
Gajanan Kurdikar to BBC. He was only
10 years old when his family had to
leave their ancestral home. “I faintly
remember my parents hurriedly putting
everything in a pick-up truck. I was also
packed up in the truck, along with my
brother and grandmother. My parents
followed us on their moped,” he adds.
Long displaced from their
motherland, the residents however, get
one month to look back into the past.
With the arrival of May every year,
the water recedes to reveal a wrinkled
and cracked earth adorned with the
remains of tree stumps and ruins
of houses and religious structures.
A quick stroll around sometimes
reveals broken remains of household
goods, broken water canals and large
stretches of barren ground.
Although they lost their homes, what
was worse was that the greater cause
was never really met. The water from
the dam never reached the nearby
villages to where Kurdi’s former
residents were rehabilitated.
“The tap system did not come
through to all villages of south Goa as
promised so we do not get our drinking
water from the dam,” Gajanan adds.
Many displaced families have to rely
on government tankers during the dry
months of April and May.
However, despite the problems, the
month of May continues to hold happy
memories for the residents as this is
the time for homecoming. It is a time
for celebration.
While the Christian community gathers
for an annual Chapel feast, the Hindus
hold a temple feast during this month.
Speaking to Indian Express, Venisha
Fernandes says, “Kurdi is the Mohenjo
Daro of Goa . . . the Egypt of Goa.
People’s memory has played a crucial
role in keeping Kurdi alive.” She is an
Assistant Professor of sociology who,
in 2009, worked on a dissertation which
talked about the archived oral history
from Kurdi’s natives. This dissertation
is soon to be a part of a book called the
‘Life in Goan villages’.
What had been alive, just in the
memories of its erstwhile residents,
now is at the verge of more
recognition, as historians, film-makers
and academicians delve deeper in
efforts of immortalising Kurdi, at last.
CM may induct
Lobo in Cabinet
... Continued from Pg. 1
Lobo has been demanding a cabinet
berth since long.
"He will get the responsibility soon.
He has kept patience all this while and
he needs to keep it for a little more
time," the chief minister said.
Lobo earlier said he was not keen to
become the Assembly Speaker after
Sawant resigned from the post to take
over as the chief minister in March this
year.
Sawant got the top post in the state
following the death of then chief
minister Manohar Parrikar.
The Goa Legislative Assembly
consists of 40 members.
The state cabinet currently has 12
ministers, the maximum number
permitted under laws, including seven
from the BJP, three from the alliance
partner Goa Forward Party and two
Independents supporting the Sawantled
government.
Sawant will have to drop one of
the ministers from his cabinet to
accommodate Lobo.

Happy Father’s Day 2019: Healthy
dads translate to healthy families
Fathers play a crucial yet understated
role in the lives of their children. While
mothers tend to have a greater influence
on children particularly when they are
young, fathers often become the subtle
role models. Traditionally women
played a larger role in rearing children
and looking after families. However,
changing gender roles and shifting
social norms have in recent years led
to greater sharing of responsibilities at
home and engendered a breed of more
involved fathers.
This brings us to the all-important
need for advocating healthy lifestyles
for men. Men are believed to be more
susceptible to unhealthy lifestyle factors
such as sedentary living, unhealthy
eating and smoking. Research has found
that throughout their lives men are twice
as likely to suffer from a heart attack.
Our hectic life pace, high stress work
environments, lack of leisure time and
physical inactivity are critical factors
affecting health of both men and women.
The average life expectancy of
an Indian male is 68.5 years and
is expected to further increase in
the coming years. Increasing life
expectancy and improvements in
medicine have also turned the spotlight
on the need for healthy ageing. Paying
attention to healthy living practices,
staying physically active and mentally
agile and making efforts to stay happy
Moon is a part of Mars,
says Donald Trump;
NASA schools him
United States President Donald Trump
said that the moon, the Earth's only
natural satellite, is actually a part of
planet Mars. Taking to Twitter, POTUS
said, "For all of the money we are
spending, NASA should NOT be talking
about going to the Moon - We did that
50 years ago. They should be focused on
the much bigger things we are doing,
including Mars (of which the Moon is a
part), Defense and Science!"
and stress free are key elements of
healthy lifestyles.
Lead by example
Being a father is not only about
cuddling your children and being
financially in-charge of the family, it
must also make you more responsible
towards your own self. By staying fit
and adopting healthy lifestyles, you
will pave way for longer and healthier
lives as friend, philosopher and guides
to your children.
Children often take fathers as their
first inspiration. By leading healthy
lifestyles, you can set the right example
for your kids to follow. In fact, some
studies have indicated that father’s
food choices have a greater influence
on children. Therefore, if you want
your child to eat fruits, you cannot set
an example of gobbling up potato chips.
Eat healthy
In many ways, we are what we eat.
What you eat does not just impact your
own health but also has a bearing on
the genetic conditioning of your future
kids, even grandkids. Different studies
have concluded that the diet induces
changes in all cells including sperm
and egg cells. This implies your eating
habits will also impact the DNA of
your progeny. Healthy eating implies
sticking to more plant based foods and
minimizing intake of processed foods
and junk items. Eating plenty of fruits
and vegetables, consuming wholefoods,
low fat dairy products and lean meats
are essential features of a balanced
diet. Eating healthy not only prevents
unwarranted weight gain but also keeps
your overall health intact. Children
practice not what they are told, but
what they see. This will also set a right
example before your children.
Exercise
Breaking the sedentary lifestyle
routine is another important element
of healthy living. Sweat it out every
day. At least 30-60 minutes of exercise
every day is essential to reduce the
risk of diabetes, cardiovascular disease
and a host of other diseases. Take your
kids out with you to ensure they adopt
outdoor activities in their daily routine.
Happiness over material pursuits
The best way to focus on your health
lies in embracing happiness and a
stress free life. Apart from healthy diet
and exercise, creating a happy space
around yourself is critical element of
overall health. Create an eco system of
friends and family and a healthy work
environment that makes you happy.
Indulge in activities that give you inner
happiness and satisfaction, rather than
focusing too much on material pursuits.
When you are happy and mentally
relaxed, you will transfer good vibes to
your family and kids as well.
Keep stress at bay
Stress might be an inalienable part of
our lives but there are effective ways
to manage it. Indulging in outdoor
sports, adopting yoga and meditation,
ensuring you get sufficient sleep daily,
and staying away from too much
texting and Internet surfing are key
elements to keep your mind relaxed
and stress free. It is also advisable to
avoid using digital devices excessively
in front of children and fill your family
time with talks and discussions about
each other that will give you inner
happiness and satisfaction.
Magician PC Sorcar dubs
Mandrake's escape game as 'foolish'
Chanchal Lahiri drowned in the river Hoogly while trying to
perform an underwater live stunt on Sunday.
Legendary magician PC Sorcar
(Junior) Tuesday described the deadly
attempt of the 40-year- old Mandrake
to show an underwater escape act as a
"foolish" attempt.
Sorcar (Jr) also pointed to Jadugar
(wizard) Mandrake's lack of adequate
training and preparation before
making escape trick.
Chanchal Lahiri, who tried to do
tricks like famed magician of escape
games Harry Houdini, drowned in the
river Hoogly while trying to perform
an underwater live stunt on Sunday.
Scouring through the river since
Sunday, police on Monday evening
found his body near Ramakrishnapur
Ghat close to Howrah.
The body was identified by Lahiri's
brother.
"I feel very bad for this incident.
It was a foolish attempt by a young
man without taking adequate safety
measures. And it was sheer bad luck
of Lahiri. I think it was the result of a
sheer enthusiasm," Sorcar told PTI.
Lahiri's attire was also "unfit" to take
such an attempt which "possibly" led to
the fatal accident, Sorcar (Jr) opined.
"He was wearing heavy socks which
looked like a gumboot and that did
not help him in swimming to escape.
His legs were also chained in such a
manner that even when he managed
freeing his hands he could not untie
them leading to such a disaster. And
I think he was also injured while
being lowered into the water by the
crane... He was also lowered in a wrong
manner," Sorcar added.
Lahiri, who was lowered into river
Hooghly in a six- foot tall cage having
six locks, from Millenium Park
here for the underwater escape act,
disappeared near pillar number 28 of
the Howrah Bridge on Sunday.
Incidentally, Sorcar (Jr), around 50
years back in 1969, had successfully
came out of a box after being locked
inside and dropped in the Bay of
Bengal.
