A class act 

For Lara-Ann Koch (43), deputy principal at Marist Brothers Linmeyer, her career 

path began when she was asked to teach at Sunday school and from 

then she gravitated towards teaching. 

And so Lara-Ann’s story unfolds and 

she tells why she has never looked 

back and wished she’d chosen 

another profession, as teaching is in 

her heart and soul. 

She was brought up in the South of 

Johannesburg, living in Brackenhurst 

and then Glenvista, where she lives 

now with her husband Sascha, and 

their three children, Daniella and 

Gabriella twin girls of thirteen years 

old and Alexander (10). 

“Our home is always very loud and 

busy as you can imagine with three 

youngsters and we also have two 

Weimaraner dogs, who are such 

characters. Friday night is homemadehamburger-and-movie 

night in our 

house and on the weekends, my 

husband and I enjoy going for a run 

together on Saturday and Sunday 

mornings - we ran our first 21km race 

in March of this year. In summer, we 

spend our days down at the pool 

and frequently braai. We also often 

take the children with their bicycles 

and our two dogs down to Rietvlei 

for a run on a Sunday afternoon. The 

outdoor lifestyle suits us all and we 

try to get out and about as much as 

we can. 

“We are very proud of our children. 

Daniella was elected as deputy head 

girl and Gabriella performed the role 

of mini councillor and prefect. They 

are both lovely young ladies and I 

look forward to them joining me in 

the high school next year. Alexander 

has most definitely benefited from 

having two older sisters and he is a 

kind and happy boy. 

“I don’t have a lot of spare time but I 

do enjoy reading and running. As a 

family during holiday times we try to 

visit a variety of places, such as the 

majestic Drakensberg Mountains, the 

Kruger National Park, Cape Town and 

Ramsgate – with its Waffle House. You don’t even need to leave the country and 

you can experience so many different holiday destinations. The fact South Africa 

has such beautiful weather and such a rich life is a blessing. 

“Looking back to my younger days I kept my parents, Wendy and Roy Nolan 

extremely busy when I was at school, since I participated in most extra-curricular 

activities. My parents never pushed me to do well, innately I have always given of 

my best in everything I was involved in. I worked hard academically and excelled 

at school, at the same time, I practised hard to perform well at netball, tennis, 

drama, public speaking and choir. In primary school, I was the Mini Councillor 

and in Grade 11, the Junior Councillor and in Grade 12, Head Girl. 

“So you can see even before I began teaching I aspired to school life,” 

she laughed. 

Her teaching career started at St Davids Marist Inanda. “I was only 25 when I was 

promoted to Head of Department Mathematics. Around this time, I found the 

love of my life, a true gem from the South and I wanted to go back to my roots. 

When I got a position at Marist Brothers Linmeyer I was in seventh heaven as I 

got to work with my mentor and principal of the school, Gary Norton. 

“Soon after I was back in my position as head of department mathematics 

and not long after was promoted to deputy principal. Being in senior 

management was not something I ever aspired to take on. The school has 

a history steeped in tradition and and being chosen to experience the 

Marist Pilgrimage in 2017, further cemented what my role as deputy should 

entail. Our ethos is based on five characteristics that were introduced by our 

founder St Marcellin Champagnat: family spirit, love of work, In the way of 

Mary, presence and simplicity and our three values of modesty, humility and 

simplicity. I have made it my goal to create an awareness of the characteristics 

and values in our learners, educators and parents. 

“The most difficult part of the job is dealing with unhappy parents or 

educators. I firmly believe in treating each situation with honesty and 

professionalism. If my answer to an email is longer than a paragraph, I rather 

pick up the phone or arrange a face-to-face meeting. I have an open-door 

policy and want learners, parents and educators to feel they can approach 

me at any time. I do, however, have a strict email policy for myself. I don’t 

read emails after 5pm in the evening and I don’t read emails on the 

weekend either. 

“I currently teach one class of Grade 12 mathematics learners. Mathematics 

is my passion. I try to instil a good work ethic and teach the learners how to 

approach difficult questions in mathematics. Mathematics anxiety is a real 

thing. I record videos so they can re-watch concepts until they understand it. 

We even watch Mr Bean videos and I try to make my lessons exciting. 

“A special part of my job is when I receive an unexpected message on 

Facebook or an email from a past learner who has realised I have made a 

difference in their life. This is priceless and makes every single day worth it. 

Teaching for me is like a duck taking to water, I occasionally have my feathers 

ruffled but at the end of every day, as I drive home with my children and look 

forward to seeing Sascha, I know I’m exactly where I want to be. We have to 

live and love every second…and I certainly do.”

Ready, set, go! 

Meet Busiswe Nobela, our Face of the Race finalist - a chatty, hopelessly 

romantic BCom Finance student with tons of energy. 

How did you discover your love for running? 

I wouldn’t call it a love for running yet – but a pursuit to get 

to that level as I embark on my health journey. I do enjoy 

running because it frees the mind, reduces stress levels and is 

the perfect time to gather (and listen) to my thoughts. 

How would your friends describe you? 

Adventurous, ambivert, a lover of people, a lover of Christ 

and a lover of love. I enjoy the company of people I care 

about and also meeting new people who share the same love 

for people. I try to help where I can and brighten someone’s 

day with the little things in life. After all, it is the little things that 

matter the most. 

What reality TV show would you give a go? 

Haha ... since I’m such a hopeless romantic, I think The 

Bachelorette. 

What is the most adventurous thing you’ve done? 

I went paragliding! I did think of skydiving as next on my 

bucket list … however, at this point, I doubt if I still want 

to do that. Nowadays, scuba diving seems like a fun idea. 

How do you prepare yourself for a race? 

Mentally, I prepare by reminding myself that I can and 

will do this. Whenever I start something, I need to finish 

it, and not only finish it but do it in the best way possible. Sure, 

winning is an awesome feeling – for me it is not crucial though, 

as long as I did the best I could, I’m a winner at heart. Physically, 

I do loads more warm-ups, aerobics, run an extra kilometre and 

make sure to have a well-balanced diet (goodbye chocolate 

and cake …). 

If you had to run from something, what would it 

be? 

I’d be running from fear. I once read a powerful 

quote from George Addair, who said, ‘Everything you’ve 

ever wanted is on the other side of fear.’ Whatever you 

desire in life is right there, on the other side of fear. 

Whether it’s personal happiness, professional success, 

abundance or love, it is within your reach. 

Tell us about your fitness and health journey. 

Besides running, I also do a lot of skipping, because 

it works your whole body and on the plus side, 

it’s fun … well, for me it is! I avoid fizzy drinks as far as 

possible and drink more water instead. To switch it up, 

I drink juice sometimes. Oh ... and I love a strawberry, 

grape and plain yoghurt smoothie! 

What do you love most about being a woman? 

The capabilities and strength that we embody in all 

aspects of life. 

How do you unwind after a training session? 

It might sound a bit strange, but I unwind by 

studying. Since training relaxes my mind and 

reduces my stress levels, it gives me the energy to tackle 

my work and push further. 

What excites you most about the Spar 

Women’s Challenge? 

This will be my first Spar Women’s Challenge and 

my first big race! What excites me the most is that it will 

push me to do better in my health and fitness journey 

and prepare me to go further.

Summer dishes to

Caramel roasted peaches, herbed lamb, pita chips with baked Camembert – 

this summer, we’re heading outdoors to feast ... healthily! 

Caramel roast peach and 

prosciutto salad 

Salads that are a complete meal 

are such a perfect warm weather 

lunchtime treat. This salad offers 

juicy subtle sweetness in the form 

of roasted peaches dusted with the 

new Tastebud Caramel spice. Umami 

richness appears care of thin slices 

of prosciutto. Add crunchy green 

leaves and herbs, pops of festive red 

pomegranate and a light vinaigrette

You can make the roasted caramel

You’ll need: 

4 peaches, apricots or nectarines, 

halved and stones removed; Cape 

Herb & Spice Tastebud Caramel 

spice; 2 Tblsps melted butter; a

of green leaves and herbs; 

pomegranate rubies; 2 Tblsps olive 

oil; 2 Tblsps neutral vegetable oil like 

avocado or canola; 2 Tblsps red wine 

vinegar; half Tblsp pomegranate 

molasses (optional); pinch of salt 

and pepper 

To make: 

Paint fruit with melted butter, 

dust liberally with Caramel spice 

and place under a hot grill or cut 

side down on a braai grid until 

caramelised. 

To make the vinaigrette, whisk oil, 

vinegar and pomegranate molasses 

together, add a generous pinch 

of salt and freshly ground pepper. 

Dress the leaves and plate up with 

the warm peaches and prosciutto. 

Serves four.

Herbed lamb ribs 

Small lamb ribs are always a fingerlicking 

winner, especially when done 

on the braai. Use Tastebud Herbed 

spice blend as a rub – packed with 

thyme, rosemary, basil, marjoram, 

coriander, ginger and loads of other 

good things, it’ll up your rib game to 

sensational. Serve with braai-blistered 

vine tomatoes and lemons. 


800g lamb ribs; Tastebud Herbed 

spice blend; 3 Tblsps tomato sauce; 

1 Tblsp lemon juice; 1 Tblsp runny 

honey 

To make: 

Dust lamb ribs with spice blend and 

set aside for 30 to 60 minutes. Brush 

ribs lightly with olive oil and place 

on a hot braai or under the grill 

element of your oven. Turn often and 

cook until done to your liking. Mix 

together tomato sauce, lemon juice, 

honey and half a tsp of the Herbed 

spice blend and generously paint ribs 

for the final 15 minutes of cooking. 

(If you do it earlier, the basting sauce 

will burn.) Serve right away. 

Serves two. 

Seeded pita chips with baked 

Camembert and honey-roasted grapes 

Every cook should have a few no-fail recipes they can turn to for 

quick snackie things to feed unexpected guests. These seeded 

pita chips with baked Camembert and honey-roasted grapes is 

one of them! Prep is all of five minutes and your oven does the 

rest in under 15. More time with friends, less time in the kitchen – 

just the way summer entertaining should be. 


1 Camembert; 1 clove garlic (peeled and sliced into slivers); 1 sprig 

thyme; 1 large bunch red grapes; 2 Tblsps honey; one packet pita 

breads 

To make: 

Preheat oven to 180 ° Celsius. Place Camembert in a round 

ovenproof bowl that just fits the cheese. Make tiny cuts in the 

cheese and stuff in garlic slivers and thyme leaves. Cut the pita 

breads into triangles, paint very lightly with olive oil and dust with 

Tastebud Seeded spice blend. Place on a baking tray lined with 

baking paper. Place grapes on another lined baking tray. Melt the 

honey by microwaving it for 20 seconds and pour over the grapes. 

Place the bowl with Camembert on the tray with the grapes. Place 

both trays in the oven for 10 to 15 minutes until the pita is toasted, 

the grapes roasted and the Camembert oozing. (The grapes and 

Camembert will take the same amount of time, but keep an eye 

on the pita chips as they may need to be removed a few minutes 

earlier.) Serve right away.

Vegetarian burger 


1 Burger bun; 1 Sliced tomato; 

Lettuce; 1 Dill cucumber; 2 Gherkins; 

1 Vegetarian pattie; 1 onion; Olive oil; 

Salt/Seasoning 

To make: 

Use a sesame seeded brioche bun or 

any preferred burger bun and give it 

a light toast in a pan with a touch of 

butter. Prepare your garnish of sliced 

tomato, lettuce and dill cucumber or 

gherkins (any flavour that suit your 

palate), grill your veggie pattie in 

some olive oil in a pan on high heat 

for three minutes a side. Remove the 

pattie from the pan and add some 

chopped onions into the oil and cook 

until onions are golden brown. Add 

some salt and seasoning as desired. 

Once the onions are ready you can 

then build your burger. We prefer 

the onions and garnish on top of the 

burger but you can mix and match as 

you like. Enjoy with either some hand 

cut french fries or a salad depending 

on your mood and the weather.

10g Seasoned flour; 80g Tofu cubes; 

80g Grain mix; 20g Red Chimichurri; 1g 

Parsely chopped seasoning; 

50g Roasted beetroot; 50g Blistered

Onion/Nigella seeds; 40g Spinach 

Hummus; 

10g Extra Virgin olive oil; 1g Micro herbs; 

10g Mojo sauce; 20g Tahini dressing 

To make: 

Coat the tofu in the seasoned flour 

and deep fry. Place the fried tofu in 

the grain mix with the chimichurri and 

the chopped parsley, season well. Heat 

the beetroot and the blistered cherry 

tomatoes slightly – so they are not 

cold out of the fridge, pop the cherry 

tomatoes. Dip the wedge of avo into 

the nigella seeds on the one side. Mix 

the mojo sauce with the tahini dressing

Grow & bloom 

Spring has begun and there is a lot to do to help your garden look its best. 

Here’s our top tips, plants of the month and gardening tasks. 

Perfect for patios… snack-sized 

sweet orange peppers are easy to grow in 

pots on the patio or on a sunny windowsill. 

‘Sweet Snack’ pot peppers produce 

loads of crunchy, delicious fruit, about 

25 to 30 fruits in two flushes. It’s a healthy 

snack for children and good for chopping 

into salads, platters and stir-fries. The 

more you pick the better they produce. 

The plants are just as pretty and stay compact 

(50cm high). They just need regular 

watering, plant food once a week and a

We’re planting… regal pelargonium ‘Novita’ for its knockout colours and neat, 

bushy growth. It looks good anywhere; in large containers, in coastal gardens, and in 

the garden in full sun or semi-shade. It doesn’t get leggy like older varieties used to do 

and it is a great bloomer. The colour range is purple, violet, dark red with a purple eye 

and a pink bicolour. The medium-sized flowers cover the bush. Plant in well-drained 

fertile soil and protect from the frost in colder areas. Garden plants need regular watering 

but allow the soil to dry out before watering again. Plants in containers need 

watering more often. Fertilise monthly with Vigorosa fertiliser. For further information:

OCTOBER GARDEN TASKS 

• Plant summer colour. Annuals that 

grow quickly and easily from seed are 

alyssum, cosmos, lavatera, portulaca, 

California poppy, and nasturtium. They 

all do best in full sun. 

• Trim back invasive groundcovers to 

give other plants room to grow. 

• Renew containers. Replace the potting 

soil and fill with summer annuals, 

trailing groundcovers or grasses. 

• Fertilise perennials with Vigorosa or 

granular fertiliser 3:1:5 or 5:1:5, and 

annuals with a liquid fertiliser. Use 

either pink or blue hydrangea food for 

hydrangeas. 

• Water regularly and spread a layer 

of mulch over beds to conserve water 

and keep the roots cool. 

• Mow lawns at least once a week, 

but if it is very hot and dry mow less 

frequently and set blades higher.
