Highland Road

YOKOTA’S EVERYDAY HEROES

A 

five-year-old girl — having spent the entire 

morning swimming in the shallow end of 

the busy Sakana Pool — stands beside 

the diving board watching in admiration as 

the older children and adults flip, cannonball 

and dive into the deep end. She’s never swam 

where she couldn’t touch the pool floor but her 

burning desire trumps her fear of the water. She 

bends her knees and jumps into the 12-footdeep 

pool. 

As soon as she hits the water, panic sets in and 

she can’t seem to keep her head above water. 

Without a second’s hesitation, the lifeguard on 

stand springs into action. He swims to the girl 

and gets her out of the water so quickly, many 

of the Sakana Pool patrons don’t even notice 

the commotion. 

Moments like these exemplify the importance 

of Yokota’s lifeguards. Their job requires 

expertise in swimming, customer service, firstaid 

and CPR. They work in time-sensitive, highstress 

situations; it only takes 30 seconds for a 

person to drown. But these everyday heroes are 

highly qualified for the job as they all passed the 

rigorous course set by the American Red Cross. 

To qualify for the training, applicants must first 

pass the prerequisite test: swim freestyle or 

breaststroke for 300 yards; tread water handsfree 

for two minutes; retrieve a 10-pound brick 

from the deepest part of the pool and back swim 

25 yards while still holding the brick. The full 

course consists of extensive book work, videos 

and hands-on training. Students must excel on 

two tests — the CPR and first-aid test and the

lifeguard-skills test — before finally receiving 

their certification. But our lifeguards’ training 

doesn’t stop there as they put their skills to the 

test with weekly practices. Visit the Natatorium 

any Thursday morning and you’re likely to find 

the lifeguards swimming laps, diving into the 

pool to save fellow “drowning” lifeguards and 

performing CPR on dummies.

five and is a strong swimmer, 

stay attentive at all times.

The Child Care for PCS Program helps relieve stress felt by Air Force

20 hours of child care for each child. Child care will be provided by licensed 

Family Child Care homes and paid for by the Air Force Aid Society. Bring a

1. During PCS season, pets cannot be transported on the airport shuttles. 

If you are moving with a pet, please contact us and request a chauffeured 

van service to drive you to the airport. 

2. Bus ticket payments are only accepted in cash. Stop by our office during 

regular business hours and pay in advance if paying with a credit card 

or check. 

3. Going home on leave? Are you a club member? Stop by our office to 

purchase your tickets in advance and show proof of membership to 

receive the 10-4-U discount. 

4. Have guests coming to visit, but don’t have time to pick them up from 

the airport? Stop by our office and fill out a sponsorship form at least 

one day in advance of their arrival. Your unaccompanied guests can then 

purchase their tickets and ride the shuttle to Fussa Gate’s Visitor Center.

Enjoy a change of pace at Shimoda, a pleasant 

coastal city in the south Izu Peninsula aptly nicknamed 

“The Waikiki of Japan.” Stay the night at Shimoda 

Prince Hotel for direct access to Shirahama Beach — 

one of Izu’s most famous and popular destinations. 

Bask in the sun or walk along the long stretch of white 

sand. More active beach goers can swim or surf in the 

spectacular blue waters. 

Visit Shirahama Jinja — a beautiful Shinto shrine 

that elegantly stands along the beach shores — or 

wander beyond Shirahama Beach to explore Ryugu

CLASS 

As the Introduction to Clay for Kids class came 

to an end, the elementary-age students couldn’t 

help but tap their fingers and wooden mallets on 

their newly molded, handmade xylophones. The 

class's freestyle approach allows each child to 

express their creative spirit, this time in the form 

of unique xylophone keys — one student’s keys 

spelled their name while another shaped theirs 

to look like fall leaves. Instructor Shigeru Ayuha, 

fondly known as Shig by his students, brought out 

more of the students’ creations for them to glaze 

— figurines the children had molded by hand 

during a past class session. Shig explained how 

they could blend paint to create new colors. After 

his instruction, the students were off, expressing 

their creative energy one clay piece at a time. 

Shig conceptualizes a new main project for each 

class, providing a different experience each course. 

He offers an Introduction to Clay for Kids class 

and Introduction to Clay for Teens. Parents who 

sign their child up for either of the classes offered 

at Arts & Crafts can rest assured their child will 

learn a variety of clay methods and express their 

creativity in a safe, structured environment.

Taketo Ippei Nishi 

Taiyo Community Center’s Japanese Language Instructor, Taketo 

Ippei Nishi, knows all too well what it’s like to move to a country 

that doesn’t speak your native language. He moved to Southern 

California on a whim when he was 20, knowing almost no English. 

He recalled going to the store to replace his CD player battery, and 

what would have been an easy chore in Japan became a complicated 

experience in America because he didn’t know the word for battery. 

But he wasn’t deterred by the experience and instead spent two years 

learning English through classes at the University of California Los 

Angeles and Orange Coast College. He lived in the States for eight 

more years and received his Bachelors in Psychology before moving 

back to Japan. 

Years later, an old friend from California reached out to him. He had 

just moved to Yokota Air Base and informed Ippei that the Taiyo was 

looking for someone to teach Japanese. Ippei seized the opportunity 

and has been teaching Japanese for over four years now. Most 

language classes off base are intense as they use the direct method 

(teaching in Japanese rather than English) and expect students to 

memorize each kanji character. Ippei, however, understands that 

most of his students are here for only a few years and don’t work for 

a Japanese business. They’re not interested in learning all the 2,000 

kanji characters; they just want to learn common phrases and words. 

Ippei uses engaging worksheets, group work and class discussion to 

teach his students greetings and introductions, common questions, 

how to say time and more. Students can also expect to learn hiragana, 

katakana and even some words in kanji. Those new to Japanese can 

sign up for the 4-week Basic Japanese class and eventually progress 

to Intermediate Japanese & Special Topics. He encourages everyone 

on base to try and learn the local language so they can explore Japan 

more easily and learn about the culture. And besides, you’re already 

here, so why not give it a try?
