The Island is a theatre production 

27 directed by Jerry Mofokeng, which 

can be seen at the Scaena Theatre 

(UFS main campus) from 7:30. It’s a 

celebration of language and unity with 

the poetic dialogue in Sesotho, English 

and Afrikaans. A celebration of Identity, 

South Africans to the core and children 

of the blanket under the skin. The Island 

is a multi-racial ‘theatrical’ honour of 

the resilience of South African women 

of different races, religion and political 

persuasion who have gone past prison

Die 2019 Bloemskou was weer ‘n hoogtepunt 

op vanjaar se sosiale kalender. Daar was talle 

nuwighede en ou gunstelinge te doen, sien, 

eet en geniet. Get It was daar.

PRETparadys 

ds. Petrie spies is die verpersoonliking van ‘n gesinsman, ‘n 

pret-pappa en ondersteuner vir sy vrou. Maar hy ruim ook 

tyd in vir die ernstige dinge in die lewe.

Ons sit en gesels op sagte 

banke in die Baptistekerk in 

Langenhovenpark, waar Petrie vir 

meer as ‘n dekade al leraar is. Mense 

ken hom as die “cool”, jong dominee – die 

een met wie jy oor enigiets kan praat, en 

die een wat vuur en vlam is oor die lewe, 

oor jongmense en oor die Here. 

“Bloemfontein is so ‘n wonderlike plek 

om te bly en om kinders groot te maak. 

Die feit dat ek al vir langer as tien jaar 

hier by die Baptistekerk werksaam is, is ‘n 

groot seëning en genade van Bo.” Maar 

wat min mense van Petrie weet, is dat hy 

aanvanklik ander planne vir sy loopbaan 

gehad het as dié van teologie. 

Petrie het sy skoolloopbaan in Jim 

Fouché voltooi, en daarna by Kovsies 

geswot om ‘n rekenmeester te word. 

Terwyl hy sy klerkskap gedoen het, was 

hy ‘n jeugleier by die Baptistekerk. “In 

hierdie tyd het ek by ‘n kruispad in my 

lewe gekom. Ek is gevra of ek voltyds by 

die kerk wil aansluit, en moes lank en hard 

dink oor hoe my toekoms lyk. Ook wat 

die Here van my vra.” In hierdie tyd het 

hy ook met sy hoërskoolliefde, Ermie (‘n 

dieetkundige), getrou. “Sy het my altyd 

ondersteun. Sy is ‘n vrou duisend.” 

Só het Petrie vaarwel geroep aan 

die wêreld van syfers, en sy studies in 

teologie begin. Hy het in 2008 amptelik 

by Baptistekerk begin werk. “Met hierdie 

loopbaanskuif het ek bonatuurlike vrede 

ervaar. Dit het net rég gevoel. Dis wat die 

Here vir my wou hê.” 

Petrie en Ermie se drie kindertjies is 

absoluut pragtig. Miené (9), Lian (7) en 

Lizbie (4) maak hul lewe vol. En Petrie 

is die verpersoonliking van ‘n prettige, 

betrokke pa. Sy werk is van so aard dat 

hy soggens en saans besig is met sy 

werksaamhede in die gemeente en by 

gemeentelede, en smiddae kan hy sy 

fokus op sy kinders rig. “Ons het onlangs 

‘n gewoonte ontwikkel om elke middag 

om 4 uur teetyd te hou by die huis. Ons 

sit en gesels met mekaar en deel kosbare 

oomblikke. Dis eintlik ons vervanging vir 

aandete aan tafel, omdat ek selde saans 

tuis is. Ons is heilig op ons tyd saam as 

gesin.” 

Petrie se benadering tot ouerskap is 

weldeurdag en op respek geskoei. “Seuns 

is anders as dogters. Ek en my seun sal op 

‘n ander manier ‘n verhouding bou as ek 

en die dogtertjies. Ons doen ander tipe 

dinge saam. Hy stel belang in sport, soos 

rugby en gimnastiek, en die buitelewe. 

Hy’s ‘n tipiese seuntjie. Maar hy het ook 

‘n sagte oomgee-hart en is baie empatiek.” 

Sy Miené-kind is hul perfeksionis en 

kultuurliefhebber. Sy hou ook van musiek 

en dans. “Sy is teruggetrokke, maar 

begin deesdae al hoe meer selfvertroue 

toon. Ons is bitter trots op haar. Sy is 

verantwoordelik en liefdevol.” 

En hulle kleinste, Lizbie, is ‘n skattige 

blondekop met ‘n glimlag wat jou hart 

laat smelt. “Sy is regtig ons sonkind – sy 

laat almal lag. Sy hou van grappies maak 

en konsert hou. ‘n Regte drama queen.” 

Soms is daar die wanvoorstelling dat 

sogenaamde pastoriekinders engeltjies 

is wat altyd die regte ding doen en sê. 

Petrie glimlag wyd. “Nee, jong, hulle is 

maar tipiese boetie en sussies! Hulle 

raak kwaad vir mekaar en hulle toets die 

grense. Gereeld. Maar ons sorg altyd dat 

ons konflik aanspreek, en elke kwade 

gevoel moet aan die lig kom en uit die 

weg geruim word. Ons probeer ons 

kinders leer hoe om ook self konflik op 

te los. Soms los ons hulle dat hulle die 

situasie self ontlont, en soms tree ons in. 

Elke situasie is eintlik ‘n geleentheid om ‘n 

les te leer of ‘n saadjie te plant.” 

Petrie is gereeld in ‘n posisie waar hy 

aan ander ouers moet raad en leiding gee. 

“Elke pa en ma ervaar ouerskap anders. 

Daar is soms kwessies wat oorvleuel, 

maar bekommernisse wat ook eie is aan 

elke huishouding. Soms het ouers nie 

spesifieke wenke nodig nie – eintlik net 

bemoediging. As die kinders klein is en 

dinge is chaos en moeilik in die huis, sê 

ek altyd, byt vas, dit word beter. Regtig. 

Besluit na watter raad jy wil luister. Die 

belangrikste van alles: Geniet jou kinders! 

God het hulle aan ons toevertrou om te 

versorg en groot te maak in Sy weë, maar 

ook om te geniet! Dis ‘n seën om kinders 

te kan hê. Koester elke oomblik.” 

Petrie se belangrikste lesse aan 

sy kinders: 

Jy moet agting hê vir mense. Groet 

mense. Sien hulle raak. Respekteer 

hulle. 

Al jou keuses het gevolge. Kies wys. 

Weet dat jy altyd met die gevolge 

moet kan saamleef. 

Soek elke dag na God in alles wat 

jy doen. 



‘n Pa duisend 

Jimmy Powell se benadering tot ouerskap is – nes sy loopbaan in sport en geneeskunde – 

kompleks, uitdagend en ‘n duisend keer lonend.

Jimmy Powell is bekend vir sy 

loopbaan in rugby as ‘n Cheetahspeler 

tussen 1998 en 2003, en ook 

sy huwelik met skoonheidskoningin 

en sakevrou, Anri Powell. Hy werk tans 

as ‘n fisioterapeut met ‘n praktyk in 

Mediclinic Bloemfontein. 

Sy grootwordjare in Bloemfontein 

en skoolloopbaan in onderskeidelik 

die Laerskool Fichardtpark en 

Hoërskool Sentraal, was aanduidend 

in sy vormingsjare. “As middelkind was 

dinge nie altyd maklik nie. My ouers 

was nie finansieel baie sterk nie, so 

ons kon nie altyd kry wat ons wou hê 

nie. Maar daar was altyd in ons basiese 

behoeftes voorsien! My pa was (en is 

steeds!) ‘n baie streng man. Dissipline 

was ononderhandelbaar. Ons het ook 

met harde werk en vasbyt grootgeword. 

Omdat ons byvoorbeeld ver van die skool 

af gebly het, het ons vroeg soggens op die 

bus geklim met skooltas en kleresak vir 

die dag gepak. Dan was daar nog ‘n hele 

ent se stap met daardie pakkasie voordat 

ons uiteindelik by die skool se hekke 

ingestap het. Die Hoërskool Sentraal en 

Eie Haard koshuis het groot rolle gespeel 

in ons vorming as jong seuns.” 

In 2004 is hy met Anri getroud. 

Ook sy huwelik het nie sonder ‘n paar 

spoedhobbels gekom nie. “Ek moes leer 

dat ‘n verhouding oor ‘ons’ gaan en nie oor 

‘my’ nie. Tyd en prioriteit is noodsaaklik. 

Omdat ons dit nie alles mooi verstaan 

het nie, het ons huwelik ook laagtepunte 

bereik. In 2009 het ons die kruispad 

teëgekom wat soms in baie huwelike 

gebeur. Weer eens genade… en goeie 

keuses het ons op ‘n plek gebring waar 

ons huwelik vandag is. ‘n Plek waarvan ons 

albei nog net gedroom het om te wees. 

Ons stel mekaar se behoeftes eerste… die 

‘eie ek’ is dood.” 

Na twee jaar van getroude lewe maak 

die mooiste klein pop haar verskyning. 

Caylyn is in 2006 gebore en Jimmy word 

pa! “Sy het my voete geheel en al onder 

my uitgeslaan. Hierdie kleinding met 

die groot, groen ogies het goed geweet 

hoe om die leeu én die lammetjie in my 

wakker te maak. Sy wek emosies van 

sagtheid en liefde, die behoefte om te wil 

beskerm, die voorsiener te wil wees, in my 

binneste.” Skielik het Jimmy soos ‘n held 

gevoel: breëbors en baie dapper om die 

wêreld te kan aanvat. 

“Maar terselfdertyd heeltemal uit my 

diepte uit! En nét toe ek dink ek begin 

dinge onder beheer kry, arriveer my seun, 

Jaedan, in 2008.” Gedoop Willam James, 

soos die name wat Jimmy van sy oupa 

gekry het. Hy is vol lewenslus en ondeund 

– soos nét ‘n seuntjie kan wees. Jimmy 

sien homself in sy seun. “Dit vat my soms 

ver terug na my kinderdae en herinner my 

aan hoe kosbaar tyd en die lewe is.” 

Terwyl Caylyn sag en gereserveerd 

voorkom, weet sy presies wat sy in die 

lewe wil hê, vertel Jimmy. “Haar mooiste 

karaktereienskap is haar begeerte om 

mense wat minder as sy het, of mense 

in nood, te wil help. Sy is baie lief vir 

soetgoed en sal ‘n hele blok Bubbly 

Mint-sjokolade by haarself opeet. Sy raak 

baie stil wanneer sy haar vererg. Maar sy 

is emosioneel volwasse genoeg om die 

saak reg te stel met die nodige gesprek 

wanneer sy afgekoel het.” 

Jaedan se sterkste karaktereienskap 

is sy leierskap. Jimmy vertel dat sy seun 

gebore is om te lei en die rigting te wys. 

“Daarom sy bynaam Maximus Decimus 

Meridius uit die fliek Gladiator. Baie maats 

noem hom ook Max. Hy is doelgerig en 

doen altyd sy bes in alles wat hy aanpak. 

Wanneer hy kwaad word, sal hy dit 

duidelik vir jou wys.” 

Verreweg die grootste uitdaging van 

pa-wees is vir Jimmy om sy emosies só te 

bestuur dat hy nie wonde in sy kinders 

se lewens veroorsaak nie. “Ek wil soms 

net eenkant wees en met my emosies 

wroeg. Ek wil uitbars in woede of net stil 

wees vir ‘n paar ure todat ek beter voel. 

Maar vier skerp klein ogies is gedurig 

op my as hul leier gerig om te sien hoe 

ek situasies hanteer.” As Jimmy kyk na 

sy kinders en vrou en die potensiaal 

wat in hulle opgesluit is, besef, dan dink 

hy opnuut aan die belangrikheid wat 

daaraan gekoppel is om hulle reg te lei 

sodat elkeen eendag sy en haar volle 

skeppingsdoel kan bereik. “Soms is hierdie 

gedagte vir my oorweldigend,” sê Jimmy. 

In hul vrye tyd probeer Jimmy en Anri 

soveel moontlik buitelug-aktiwiteite met 

hul kinders doen. “Uit die aard van my 

sportagtergrond, asook dié van Anri, speel 

ons graag saam tennis en netbal, asook 

hokkie en met tye, ook bietjie rugby. Ons 

kuier graag op die plaas in die Noord- 

Kaap by my neef waar ons gereeld ook 

jag. Ons is baie lief vir die buitelewe en 

ons besoek graag ook nuwe plekke waar 

ons min mense ken en waar ons tyd saam 

kan deurbring as gesin, maar ook as man 

en vrou, met bergfietsry, lang ente stap, 

boogskiet, swem in die see, ens.”

Oor dissipline en genade 

“Die reëls word vooraf baie duidelik met almal 

gekommunikeer, sodat almal die verskil ken tussen 

reg en verkeerd. Grense word dus duidelik gestel 

en die gevolge word ook duidelik gestel. Toe hulle 

jonger was, is die strawwe neergeskryf en in ‘n 

straf-sakkie gegooi. Dan het elkeen sy straf uit die 

sakkie getrek wanneer hy/sy oortree het. Tussen al 

die strawwe het ons altyd ook een papiertjie gehad 

waarop “Genade” geskryf is. Indien hulle dan hierdie 

een trek, kon ons hulle leer hoe genade werk.”

Give us a glimpse of your childhood 

years in the Free State. 

I spent my time in Bloemfontein and 

Thaba Nchu. I went to Tlotlanang Primary 

School. I grew up with my grandmother 

and my cousins. Good times, with a large 

blended family. 

You’ve been into acting, dancing 

and writing from a young age. How 

did you decide which career path to 

follow? 

They are pretty much the same thing, so 

it was a matter of focusing on what works 

for the moment. I love performing and 

that took precedence over everything 

else. 

Tell us about your hubs and kids. 

I have three kids – two boys and the 

youngest is a girl. They are a lot of fun and 

teach me a lot about myself. They think 

they are mini celebrities. My husband is 

probably their favourite. He is our narrator 

and party starter. 

You’re coming to Bloem with fellow 

comedian Ndumiso Lindi for your 

fantastic comedy show… we can’t 

wait! How would you describe the 

role of comedy and laughter in 

your life? 

Comedy is a healer. Comedy is a unifier. 

It has carried me through the best and 

worst times of my life and gets me paid. 

Our show takes that wonderful craft of 

comedy to a space where we often forget 

to laugh: marriage. 

Let’s talk about your book, 

And then Mama said. You’re 

tackling some serious life issues 

unashamedly, including a rape 

ordeal you had to make through as 

a teenager…? 

I cover so much about the strength I draw 

from my mother’s life and lessons. I also 

use it as a reminder that we all have our 

crosses to bear. What counts, is how we 

choose to react in the moment. 

… and then you lost your mother. 

Tell us about her and her influence 

on your life. 

I lost my mother when I was 29 and it 

catapulted me into adulting at a different 

level. I never thought I would lose her. It 

is weird but true, she was so invincible in 

my eyes. 

You’ve lost loved ones and had to 

deal with the topic of suicide in 

your life. How do you view mental 

health? 

I think it is something that is not discussed 

openly enough. People carry their mental 

health challenges like something to 

be hidden and ashamed of, instead of 

reaching out. I really hope more and more 

people come out and share their stories 

so that people suffering with mental 

issues know they are not alone. 

You’ve also been weight shamed… 

ag sies, man! People can be so 

rude. How do you get over hate 

comments, being the public figure 

that you are? 

Someone once told me dogs only bark 

at moving cars. That put things into 

perspective. I am in a state of flux and 

nobody will stop me. 

Overcoming marriage difficulties, 

what have you learnt are the three 

most important factors of keeping 

a marriage healthy? 

Love, forgiveness and being naked with 

each other. 

Lessons you’d like to teach your 

kids? 

Persevere in all you do, put God first 

and remember you are part of every 

community you find yourself in. 

You’ve even been to France as a 

dancer… wow! Tell us about that. 

It was physical theatre more than dance. 

Physical theatre is an aspect of theatre I 

dabbled in earlier on in my career, while I 

was deciding what to do with myself. 

What do South Africans need to 

talk about more? 

Love. Pain. Finding each other.

Oorgewig kinders word oorgewig tieners wat 

dan weer oorgewig volwassenes word, maar 

vetsugtigheid is omkeerbaar en hier is hoe jy dit 

kan regkry: 

Die sleutel tot gesondheid, psigologiese welsyn 

en ‘n optimale liggaamsmassa is om die fokus te 

verskuif van gewigsverlies na gewigsonderhoud 

wat gesien kan word as die optimale gewig vir 

algehele gesondheid. Deur slegs 5% tot 10% van 

jou huidige massa te verloor, lei tot ‘n verbeterde 

glukosebeheer, verlaagde bloeddruk asook ‘n 

verbeterde cholesteroltelling. 

Kitsdiëte of “crash diets” 

Met die internet aan ons vingerpunte word ons

Bly weg, sê 

dieetkundiges… 

‘n Verlies in liggaamsmassa behels nie net 

‘n verlies aan vet nie, maar ook ‘n verlies aan 

spiermassa. ‘n Drastiese massaverlies kan 

hongersnood naboots wat newe-effekte 

veroorsaak soos lae bloeddruk, ‘n droë vel en 

hare, moegheid en selfs depressie. 

Baie kitsdiëte beklemtoon vinnige resultate met 

so min as moontlik inspanning. Hierdie diëte 

kan ook lei tot voedingstekorte wanneer dit 

aanbeveel om byvoorbeeld ‘n voedselgroep uit 

te sny of om een tipe voedsel herhaaldelik in te 

neem. 

Wanneer die persoon dan nie hierdie vinnige 

(en meestal onrealistiese) resultate verkry nie 

kan dit ook skuldgevoelens of die gevoel van 

mislukking veroorsaak. 

“Yo-yo” dieetsiklusse 

Herhaaldelike gewigsverlies gevolg deur 

vinnige gewigstoename staan bekend as “yo-yo” 

dieetsiklusse. Dit is bewys dat individue na elke 

siklus weer al die gewig en moontlik meer gewig

intensiteit vir 20-30 minute 4-7 dae van die week. 

Wenk: Nader ‘n gimnasium of persoonlike 

instrukteur vir ‘n oefenprogram (maar besoek jou 

dieetkundige vir ‘n persoonlike dieetplan eerder 

as om die gimnasium se algemene diëte te 

gebruik wat nie spesifiek vir jou uitgewerk is nie). 

Drankies 

Suikerbevattende drankies en alkohol wat in 

groot hoeveelhede ingeneem word, is ‘n baie 

groot oorsaak van gewigstoename (onthou dat 

koffie en tee wat suiker of heuning bevat ook 

hier ingesluit word). 

Wenk: Moenie jou kilojoules drink nie. 

Die lekkergoedkas 

Wanneer die lekkergoedkas in die huis stampvol 

is, gaan die gesin altyd daarvan eet. 

Wenk: As dit nie gekoop word nie sal dit nie ‘n 

versoeking wees nie. 

Gewigsplato 

Meeste individue bereik ‘n stilstand in hulle 

gewig wanneer hulle vir ‘n langer termyn op 

‘n gewigsverliesprogram geplaas word. Dit is 

normaal en gebeur wanneer daar ‘n balans 

ontstaan tussen energie-inname en energieuitset 

en die dieet kan namate weer aangepas 

word. 

Onthou dat jy nie net in tien dae gewig opgetel 

het nie en dit gaan dus ook nie net tien dae kan 

neem om dit weer af te skud nie. Om ‘n gesonde 

lyf te hê behoort jou eerste prioriteit te wees. 

Stel bereikbare doelwitte sodat jy nie moedeloos 

word as die doelwit moeilik raak om te bereik 

nie. 

Byvoorbeeld: as jy twee lepels suiker in jou koffie 

drink, verminder dit vir ‘n maand lank na slegs 

een lepel suiker en daarna na ‘n halwe lepel. As 

jy niks oefening gedoen het nie kan jy begin 

om trappe te klim in plaas van hysers te gebruik 

en later aansluit by ‘n oefengroep. Op hierdie 

manier gebeur die veranderinge stadiger, maar 

dit is nie moeilik om daarmee aan te hou nie en 

dit hou nie gevare vir jou gesondheid in nie.

On the outskirts of Bloemfontein lies a hidden gem that offers 

true hospitality and tranquillity. We drew inspiration from the Villa 

Avianto owners setting a beautiful feast table, preparing a hearty 

winter menu and landscaping the most heavenly gardens.

Villa Avianto, situated at 

Quaggafontein next to the N8, 

truly lives up to its name. Translated 

as “House of the Heavens”, it 

offers a unique Tuscan ambiance with 

formal gardens and fountains blending 

seamlessly with the environment. It’s truly 

a “wow” moment when you follow the 

meandering cobble stone path past the 

greenery and breath-taking rose bushes, 

to the main house. 

It’s home to the very popular French 

Market held once every quarter. Here, 

you’ll also find the most beautiful coffee 

shop, Villa Café, which is open every 

Saturday morning. Owner, Suretha van 

Heerden, is all smiles when she tells you 

about her plans with the café – to make 

it a haven for the elderly and forgotten 

people to enjoy a cup of tea and a slice 

of cake. “We also roast our own coffee 

here, and we’re passionate about creating 

a space for the whole family to come 

and relax. We’ve got plenty of space for 

children to play and parents to enjoy each 

other’s company.” 

If there’s anyone who truly understands 

the art of décor, gardening and the 

creation of a scenic environment that 

speaks to your senses, it’s Suretha. In 2004, 

she and her husband, Christo, bought 

the land with only an empty house and 

a dream. She has been at the forefront 

of the conceptualising, landscaping, 

building and planning of Villa Avianto. 

The fruit of her hard work stands in all its 

glory today, and the couple’s plans for the 

future are even more beautiful. They’re 

using the venue for concerts (most 

recently the Musiek soos Grond music 

festival took place there), a wedding 

venue (the first wedding taking place in 

October), and their Spice Route, which 

is gaining momentum. Every Saturday, 

people are welcome to take on one of the 

three different routes on the Spice Route 

on foot. “We want people to enjoy the 

beauty that nature has to offer on their 

way to a healthy lifestyle.” They also offer 

amazing options for private parties and 

functions. 



Table, flowers and décor 

Suretha and Villa Avianto events 

coordinator, Jansie Malan, believe that a 

feast table should be decorated from your 

heart and from your garden. These colours 

are autumn inspired, and create a feeling 

of warmth and beauty. When asked about 

her ideas for table decorating, Jansie 

replies, “I always say, if your flower or plant 

arrangement on your table attracts bees, 

or if a butterfly can easily fly in between 

the leaves, you’ve done a good job,” 

Suretha adds, “Use what you have. Your 

grandmother’s cutlery, mismatched plates 

and linen serviettes. Find inspiration in 

your surroundings. Don’t fuss with table 

cloths and too many trinkets. Exposed 

wood and greenery are beautiful.”

from your garden and cutlery from gran’s cupboard 

Garden and grace 

Suretha has a passion for landscaping. 

She has next level green fingers. Her 

advice for creating a dreamy rose garden 

from cuttings is worth listening to. The 

roses in her gardens are larger than life 

and smell like pure perfume. It’s actually 

quite intoxicating. Another thing that 

gives her gardens fairy tale status? “Prayer. 

I pray next to my thorn tree every day. I 

believe God lives here – His blessings are 

abundant upon Villa Avianto. I never let 

revenue lead my thoughts and planning 

processes. I’ve always let God lead the way 

– and this is what has transpired.”

Food 

Christo is the culinary mastermind and 

foodie creative force at Villa Avianto. 

With no formal training as a chef, Christo 

trusts his gut to create the most delicious 

dishes – from hearty soups and freshly 

baked breads, to steamy meat pies and 

sweet treats. He’s got a head for business, 

but he’s most at home when cooking 

away in his kitchen. For winter, he suggest 

a traditional provincial menu with a 

minestrone soup as the starter, Shepherd’s 

pie for mains and a fig pie for dessert.

“We pair our food with wines from the 

Hermanuspietersfontein range. They are 

absolutely delicious,” says Christo. “Trust 

you gut when cooking. Use recipes as a 

base to understand the basics, but free 

your mind to experiment with new tastes 

and taste combinations.”

Christo’s Minestrone soup 

2 onions 

2 sticks of celery 

Olive oil 

600g green vegetables, such as 

courgettes, fennel, broccoli, asparagus, 

chard, kale, peas, broad beans. 

200g Risotto rice 

2 litres chicken stock 

1 bunch fresh rosemary and thyme 

2 cloves garlic 

50g Parmesan cheese 

1 lemon 

Extra virgin olive oil 

Peel the onions and celery, then finely 

chop both and place in a large pan on 

medium heat with 2 tablespoons of 

olive oil. Cook for 15 minutes, stirring 

occasionally. This is a good time to prep 

your green veg, chopping courgettes 

and fennel into ½ cm chunks, and finely 

slicing broccoli, asparagus, chard and 

kale. Put the veg aside. Stir the rice into 

the pan for 2 minutes, then pour stock 

in. Tie the herbs together and add to the 

pan. Bring to boil, then simmer gently 

for 15 minutes. 

Meanwhile, peel the garlic and pound 

into a paste with a pinch of sea salt. 

Finely grate in the Parmesan and lemon 

zest, squeeze in the juice and muddle in 

4 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil. 

Stir the veg into the soup and simmer 

for a final 10 to 15 minutes, ensuring 

that the veggies retain their vibrancy. 

Season to perfection, then divide into 

warm bowls. Spoon a generous amount 

of the pesto onto you soup, and enjoy!

not sure what to serve your guests at your next cocktail party? Trust an all-rounder like 

mushrooms. And gin, of course. 

Mini mushroom tacos 

8 mini soft shell tortillas 

Pickled red onion 

½ pineapple, cut into small cubes 

Fresh coriander 

1 avocado 

Tabasco, fresh chilli or your favourite hot 

sauce 

2-3 limes 

Sea salt 

Freshly ground black pepper 

250g baby button mushrooms 

1 Tbsp olive oil 

1 tsp sea salt flakes 

2 garlic cloves, minced 

1 Tbsp paprika 

1 Tbsp ground cumin 

2 tsp onion powder 

1 tsp garlic powder 

Minced zest of 1 lemon 

1 tsp freshly ground black pepper 

1 Tbsp chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley 

Place the avocado flesh in a small plastic 

jug. Squeeze in the juice of 1 lime and 

generously season with salt and pepper. 

Add a few dashes of your favourite hot 

sauce or half a fresh chilli. Blend with a 

stick blender until creamy and smooth. 

Set aside in the fridge. 

Preheat the oven to 180°C. 

In a large roasting pan, combine the 

mushrooms with the olive oil, salt, garlic, 

paprika, ground cumin, onion powder, 

garlic powder, lemon zest and pepper. 

Toss to coat and roast for 10 minutes. Toss 

with the fresh parsley as the mushrooms 

come out of the oven. 

Grill/Char the tortillas lightly on a griddle 

pan or over and open flame. 

Assemble your tacos with a generous 

swish of guacamole, a pile of mushrooms, 

fresh cubes of pineapple, a few pieces 

of pickled onion and a sprig of fresh 

coriander. Fold up and enjoy.

150ml ginger ale 

Fill desired glass with ice and add a wedge of pineapple. 

Pour in the Six Dogs Gin, top with ginger ale and garnish 

with a piece of the pineapple crown.

Anthuriums are virtually indestructible 

and almost never without flowers. We 

love soft pink, the colour of a flamingo, 

which is the other name for anthurium. 

Plants like a warm room and bright light, 

but not direct sunlight. Let the soil dry 

out moderately between watering. If 

the leaves turn yellow (but not brown 

and withered), this may be a sign of 

overwatering. Anthurium plants are long 

lasting indoor plants that also help to 

keep the air clean, especially in winter. The 

heart-shaped flowers and glossy leaves 

add a tropical touch, just pop the plant 

in a simple, elegant container for instant 

décor.

Garden tasks for June 

• Plant out winter flowering annuals like pansies, violas, petunias (summer 

rainfall areas) alyssum, and fairy primulas. 

• Love lilies? Plant bulbs from now until August, in slightly acid soil that drains 

well. 

• Water once a week and fertilise once a month. Spring flowering bulbs should 

not be allowed to dry out; water for forty minutes every four days. 

• Dead head poppies, calendula, and sweet peas to encourage new flowers. Cut 

down cannas and dahlias. Tidy up other perennials. Shrubs and trees can be 

lightly trimmed to let in more sun. 

• This is the best month to move or plant summer-flowering shrubs, rose 

bushes, perennials and even small trees. 

• Repot outdoor container plants. 

• Water lawns once a month and fertilise once a month in frost free subtropical 

areas. Remove weeds by hand or with a targeted weed killer. 

• Protect tender or semi-tender plants from frost with frost guard cloth.

A nursery room is more than 

just a place for your baby to 

sleep; it’s an essential space for 

them to grow, be happy and 

healthy. Let’s help you get the 

décor right. 

Even if your baby is attached to you for 

the first few months of your life and sleeps 

in your bed (sorry, Dad), the nursery will 

become a space where you spend hours 

with your baby. So, it’s good to make 

the space feel like a sanctuary for them”, 

explains Parenting and Pampers Institute 

Expert, Sister Lilian. 

The decorative style for this room 

can follow any desired trend. The most 

important thing is to get the basics of 

what makes a good baby room right. 

Sister Lilian adds that “babies react 

differently to various colours, patterns, 

objects, just as adults do. Some colours 

can be calming, some patterns fascinating 

and some objects stimulating. But too 

much of anything may have a negative on 

them.” 

Colour 

Studies have shown that colour can 

have a psychological effect on people’s 

emotions. While parents may be tempted 

to go all-out and paint the whole room 

in all the colours of the rainbow, it is 

not advisable to have many colours 

displayed boldly in the baby’s room. 

Too many bright colours may irritate or 

overstimulate your baby. 

Look at choosing softer, warmer colours 

that can help create a soothing and 

calming space. This will come in handy 

for naps and at bedtime. 

Lighting 

Babies can associate different lighting 

with different activities. When the room 

is brightly-lit, babies often associate 

this with daytime and playtime. This 

can create more of a challenge at bed 

time, especially at night. A darker-lit 

rooms creates a “sleepy” mood for them. 

Inventions such as a dimmer switch have 

made it easier for parents to check on 

their baby at night, without creating a 

disturbance with a bright light. 

Patterns 

Patterns can also have an overstimulating 

effect on your baby. Items on the walls, 

such as animal paintings, shapes, letters 

or numbers can be overwhelming for 

your baby. It may make the room feel 

a little too cluttered. Opt for minimal 

objects/patterns across the walls in the 

room, or dedicate one corner for the 

decoration. The walls should have a 

neutral space with as little stimulation as 

possible. When it comes to patterns, less 

is more. 

Sound 

Sound control in the nursery room will 

help your baby have undisturbed sleep 

or be in a more relaxed state during 

the day. The sounds they receive in this 

space will affect how they sleep or play. 

This does not mean an absolutely silent 

room. The key is to have a background 

sound that soothes and calms your 

baby. Often, soothing music or normal 

household sounds comfort babies and 

reassure them that their parents are in 

close vicinity.

the University of the Free State. I am 

the accounting officer for the overall 

operation of the university, ensuring that 

the academic, administrative, and financial

Why do you love what you do? 

Universities are about the future;

professionals and thinkers, developing new 

knowledge, and applying this knowledge 

for the advancement of humankind. This is

and Fees Must Fall movements. 

You are a firm believer in stakeholder 

engagement? Why do you think this is 

one of your successes as a leader? 

It is important for me to be close, very close, 

to my constituencies. I want to understand 

how they feel, how they experience the 

institution, and how they can be supported 

and developed to fulfil the mandate of the 

institution.

Dr Niel van Wyk 

Cure Day Care Hospital 

Dr Niel van Wyk is one of Bloemfontein’s well-known 

ophthalmologists practicing at Cure Day Care Hospital in 

Brandwag. Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine concerned with 

the study of the structure and functions of the eye, as well as the 

treatment of diseases of the eye. 

Dr Van Wyk passed his final exam in ophthalmology in 

October 2015 to obtain both the FC OPHTH and Mmed degrees 

in ophthalmology. He has a special interest in cornea refractive 

surgery and lasik (eye surgery), vitro-retinal surgery, advanced and 

high volume cataract surgery, glaucoma and oculoplastic surgery 

and strabismus (a condition in which the eyes do not properly align 

with each other when looking at an object). 

During his training he took part in several research projects. He 

also did several cataract surgery tours as part of outreach projects 

run by the bureau for prevention of blindness in South Africa. 

He opened his own independent practice in Bloemfontein 

and also does sessions as a consultant specialist at the National 

Academic Hospital in Bloemfontein and monthly outreaches to 

clinics in Kroonstad and Welkom.

André is the Marketing Manager of Mimosa Mall. 

He has been part of this dynamic Centre Management 

Team since 2014. His main responsibility is overseeing 

the marketing and communication functions of the

André’s passion for marketing comes from a young age. 

He studied Corporate Communication and Marketing at 

the University of the Free State. “To have the opportunity to 

one day work for a fantastic corporate brand such as Pareto 

Limited (the landlord of Mimosa Mall), was merely a dream. 

To be able to live out that passion today, while having so 

much fun doing it, is awesome and such a blessing.” 

His journey with Mimosa Mall speaks of his persevering 

spirit and his determination. “I started as the junior in 

the team when I was only 24 years old. It was quite the 

challenge in the beginning to be taken seriously. I quickly 

learned that proving myself worthy and hardworking 

whilst maintaining a humble attitude, is the key to 

overcoming those challenges and to have my work

Andre’s respect and admiration for his colleagues stem

Martin is the Facilities Manager at Mimosa Mall. 

With an extensive background in architecture, 

tourism, planning and maintenance, Martin is a 

master of his trade and is an absolute stalwart within 

the team. 

He was born in Windhoek, Namibia, and studied 

Architecture at the University of the Free State. His path 

took a few surprising turns, and landed him a job in 

Namibian Adventure Safaris and Tours in Namibia in 1988, 

where he catered exclusively for foreigners. He joined the 

Legend Lodges Group in 1992, after which he developed 

various lodge structures including Lakeside Lodge and 

Kingfisher Lodge on the Entabeni property. 

Since 2004, Martin has been working as the Facilities 

Manager at Mimosa Mall. During the past ten years, 

he has successfully completed the SACSC Shopping 

Centre Management Course, SAPOA Facilities 

Management Programme, SAPOA Construction 

Technology Programme as well as various other 

certificates relating to the built environment and 

facilities management. His Construction Project 

Management Programme (CPMP) will be concluded 

by the end of 2019. 

Martin spends as much time as he can with 

his wife and two sons in the outdoors and has a 

constant longing for the Karoo and its wide-open 

expanse. Adventure riding, mountain biking, 

hiking and photography are his keen interests. 

Reading and investigating various topics, from 

nature related wonders of the world to Afrikaans 

poetry take up the rest of the

restaurant owner, combined with his three years’ experience of

Niko boasts a Sales & Marketing and Financial Management 

Diploma through Unisa, ventured on his own in 1998 and

Georgios’ advice to young professionals is: “Every champion 

was once a contender. If you fall down, always get back up. 

Know your product better than your competitor, but always treat 

everyone with respect. Always stay true in the dark, and humble 

in the spotlight.” 

Niko adds: “Do what you love daily and you will prosper. Your 

biggest success and encouragement words should be: ‘I can, I 

will’. Words like ‘I can’t’ don’t exist.” 

Peter believes in setting daily, weekly and annual goals for 

yourself. “Always have integrity and believe in yourself. Never 

give up. Failure is success in progress, so don’t be afraid to make 

a mistake.” 

When it comes to family life, Niko says, “ My biggest pride and 

joy is my family, my wife and my daughter. The word ‘us’ is the 

most important word in my vocabulary.” 

To Peter spending time with his loved ones means watching 

a movie together, eating out or sharing a traditional homemade 

communal meal created by all, followed by a board or card 

game. 

Georgios regards family as the 

foundation of everything. “I am 

what I am today because of my 

family, because of the love, 

support and prayers of my 

parents.”

Pieter is the director of Willers Anttorneys. He

Being fit and healthy, and enjoying what the 

outdoors has to offer, lies close to Pieter’s heart. 

Apart from assisting his fiancée with endurance 

horse riding, Pieter is currently prepping for his first 

Physique show in July in Welkom. “I believe a fit 

mind is a happy mind.” He also loves reading and 

catching up on his favourite documentaries.

steeds die balans tussen familie, vriende 

en werk te behou.” 

In sy ontspanningstyd ry Arthur 

graag Harley. Hy is deel van die Harley- 

Davidsonklub in Bloemfontein. “Ek het 

ook ‘n huis langs die Vaalrivier waarheen 

ek en my familie gereeld wegbreek vir ‘n 

naweek weg van die stad se lawaai.”

‘n Nuwe tuiste in 

Aussieland 

Leoni le Roux, ‘n oud-Bloemfonteiner, het ná haar jare in die Kaap 

besluit om saam met haar man en twee seuntjies die groot stap te 

neem na ‘n splinternuwe lewe in Aussieland. Sy neem ons saam op 

haar reis. 

Die idee het oorspronklik by ‘n 

gesellige familiebraai ontstaan. 

Die gesprek het gegaan oor die toestand 

van ons land en ook die toekoms van die 

kinders. Behalwe vir die goeie statistieke 

van Australië en die weer, het ons geen 

ander verwysing gehad nie. Ons het 

eintlik heel blind in dit ingegaan, niemand 

van ons was al ooit voorheen daar nie. 

My suster en haar gesin het in 2017 met 

hul planne begin om Australië toe te 

emigreer. Ons het gesien hoe uitvoerbaar 

die proses eintlik kan wees. Moeilik, maar 

moontlik. Ons het in Junie 2017 met 

die proses begin. Die visumaansoekproses 

was die heel moeilikste ding 

wat ek nog ooit moes deurmaak. Dis 

duur, baie duur, en die risiko’s wat 

mens neem is soos dié van iemand wat 

geen verantwoordelikhede het nie. Dis 

senutergend. 

Ons is al vir die afgelope paar maande 

in Lismore, New South Wales. 

Die visum waarmee ons hier mag wees, 

stipuleer dat ons permanent kan bly, maar 

vir eers vir twee jaar in ‘n sekere staat. Ons 

het New South Wales gekry op grond van 

my man se werk en vaardigheidskode. 

Hy werk nou as a ouditeur vir een van 

Australië se groot Rekeningkunde en 

Finansiële maatskappye. 

Lismore is ongelooflik mooi en groen 

oral waar jy kyk. Hier staan ‘n massiewe 

mangoboom in my agtertuin – 

vrugtebome is volop hier. Hier is ook baie 

reënwoude en natuurroetes om te volg. 

Die lewe in Australië is rustig. 

Baie baie rustiger as waaraan ons 

gewoond was in Suid-Afrika. In Suid- 

Afrika moes ek en my man albei voltyds 

werk om die pot aan die kook te hou. 

In Australië kom ons uit op net my man 

se salaris. Ek is tans by die huis saam my 

seuns totdat ek hulle binnekort weer 

in ‘n skooltjie kan plaas. Alles hier gaan 

oor kwaliteit. Hier spandeer mense geld 

op vakansies, kampeer, lekker kos… 

buitelewe-gesentreerd, en nie op karre en 

huise nie. Ons is bitter gelukkig hier. 

Ek mis biltong die heel meeste. 

Ek moes baie meer daarvan geëet het in 

Suid-Afrika, dis eintlik so goedkoop daar! 

Ek mis ook die kassiere by ‘n supermark 

wat jou sakkies pak. In Australië doen 

jy dit self, en dis nogal ‘n kuns om alles 

weer gou genoeg in jou trollie te kry 

want die persoon agter die kasregister is 

ongelooflik vinnig. Jy scan en betaal ook 

alles self by die winkels hier. My eerste 

paar besoeke aan ‘n winkel was nogal 

stresvol! 

Klein kindertjies pas eintlik baie vinnig 

aan. 

Ek dink ‘n mens moenie te hard wees op 

hulle nie – veral oor die kwessie van ‘n 

skielike taalverandering. Dis belangrik dat 

hulle eers in hul moedertaal gevestig is 

voordat hulle ‘n tweede taal aanleer. Dan 

kom dit sommer vinnig. Vir eers praat

Haar kinders maak vriende met ‘n kangaroe 


ons nog Afrikaans met ons kinders 

(ouderdomme drie en vier), maar stel 

hulle wel bloot aan Engelse woorde en 

kort frases. 

Ons het al vriende gemaak – Suid- 

Afrikaners is oral! 

Hier is so baie, ‘n mens sal nooit 

eensaam kan voel tussen hulle en jou 

nuwe Aussie-vriende nie. Ek vind die 

Australiërs baie vriendelik en maklik 

om mee te praat; hulle is mense sonder 

enige aansitterigheid. As jy oop is om 

nuwe mense te leer ken, sal jy vriende 

maak by jou werk, die kinders se skole, 

en winkels. 

Dit was soms moeilik om positief te 

bly tydens die emigrasieproses. 

Bid, bid, en nogmaals bid. En dan nóg ‘n 

bietjie bid. In my opinie is dit geloof wat 

jou deurkry, want mens val plat met tye. 

Wanneer ek negatief geraak het, het ek 

nuus gekyk en myself daaraan herinner 

aan waarom ons dit doen. Ons het ook 

baie YouTube-video’s gekyk oor alles 

wat Australië bied – die mooi en lekker 

dinge waarna mens kan uitsien en 

waarmee jy jou droom kan vashou. 

Mammas, wees geduldig met jouself, 

jou man en jou kinders. 

Dis vir julle almal moeilik – vir elkeen 

op sy eie manier. Probeer om deur alles 

steeds die lekker raak te sien. Moenie so 

behep raak met die reuseproses dat die 

lewe vir jou te donker word nie. Hou jou 

oog op die prys, altyd. 

Leoni se gunstelingdinge in 

Aus: 

• Die parke. Die openbare parke 

is ongelooflik. Dis groot, die 

grasperke is netjies, daar is tafels en 

stoele, gasbraaiers en ongelooflike 

speelrame vir kinders. 

• Aldi se weeklikse “Special 

buys”. Ek kan nie genoeg kry nie. 

Ek is elke Woensdag daar as die 

nuwe spesiale aanbiedinge uit 

is. Dis ‘n baie lekker supermark, 

bekostigbaar, met winskope van 

enigiets, van onderklere to ski-gear. 

• Die booms voordat jy by die 

mall inry. Dit gee geen kaartjie 

nie. Dis alles elektronies. Die boks 

skandeer jou nommerplaat en as 

jy weer uitry, bereken dit jou fooi 

en dan tap jy jou bankkaart net 

daar teen die boks. Jy klim glad nie 

uit nie, en daar is geen kaartjies of 

betaalpunte nie.
