Calls for another crime and safety forum
Fire rages, homes at risk

ONGOING CRIME and safety
issues have led to calls for
another community forum to
address problems in the east.
City council staff have agreed
to look at holding another
forum like the Save our Suburbs
Community Safety Expo in
March after
the idea was
suggested by
the Coastal-
Burwood
Community
Board.
But

The March expo at the
old Central New Brighton
School site brought together
the community, emergency
services, Civil Defence,
neighbourhood support, mental
health professionals, insurance,
security and technology experts,
city council and Age Concern
representatives. Burwood
Ward city councillor Glenn
Livingstone said the turnout at
the expo was not as good as it
could have been.
Cr Livingstone said a number
of burglaries had taken place
in and around Parklands
recently, which has increased the
importance of holding a widerreaching
community safety
event.
“I attended a meeting up at
the Bottle Lake shelter up there
about a month or so ago and
they raised some of those issues,
so yes, it does make it even more
important.”
Cr Livingstone said another
expo, which was more inclusive
of residents in the Burwood
Ward, could be necessary.
“It’s not like any other ward
in the city, it’s got its own
challenges, particularly on the
edges of the red zone,” he said.
“We are getting a few public
safety issues, you know, over
dumping, people in cars that
can’t easily be monitored and
some unsocial behaviour, so
it’s particularly important for
Burwood in that regard.”
“We’ve picked up ongoing
concerns.”
Coastal Ward city councillor
David East said the information
delivered at the March safety
expo had been valuable, but it
needed to reach more people in
Burwood.
“It was focused on the Coastal
Ward last time, but it needs to
be probably marketed to both
wards and in a location that’s
going to attract participation
from both areas.”
Sergeant Currie said this was
not necessarily the solution.
“It’s good to have the
community involved in helping
itself, but if you have too many
events like that, people just start
switching off to them.”
He said it would be better for
neighbours to come together in
smaller groups to discuss how
they can keep each other safe.
No date has been confirmed
for the proposed safety forum.
