Council hopeful cleans up shingle
Fire rages, homes at risk

CITY COUNCIL hopeful Phil
Mauger says he did not clean up
piles of shingle near the Avon
River to win votes.

and several of his staff used a
digger to clear away shingle in
the car park opposite The Bower
on New Brighton Rd.
The eyesore was highlighted
in Pegasus Post last week and Mr
Mauger decided
to clear it after
reading the
article.
He is standing
in the Burwood
Ward against
Glenn
Livingstone
three-term city
councillor Glenn
Livingstone in
October’s local body elections.
The car park is in the Coastal
Ward.
Cr Livingstone said clearing up
the shingle was electioneering.
“I think it is an election
stunt because I’ve never heard
of him doing any work in the
area. He’s suddenly come from
Avonhead (where he lives) to
run for council and out of the
blue takes away some shingle,
so I think it is electioneering,
that’s pretty clear.”

car park, so he did the job
instead.
In spite of posting the
fact he did the job on his
election Facebook page, Mr
Mauger said it was not an
election stunt.
He said he did it in honour of
his late mother, Patsy Mauger,
who hated the mess.
“It was really just something
that mum wanted done, we’ll
say three years ago, and I’ve
finally got my act together
and got it done and that was
the only reason I put it on my
Facebook page.” He said he has
given back to the community
before, providing soil for cricket
wickets and purchasing a St John
ambulance last year.
Mr Mauger used the shingle
on a filling
job.
City council community parks
manager Al Hardy said the
shingle at the car park site had
been dumped illegally.
“There have been reports of
the illegal dumping of shingle
since the car park was used as
a temporary stockpile site for
earthquake repairs. We are still
looking into who is responsible
for the dumping. However,
we’ve identified that this is not
a council operation, and staff
are now obtaining quotes to
reinstate the car park.”
The city council had planned
to clean up the shingle in July.
But Mr Mauger said it was
“sad” it had taken so long to clear
the car park.
Coastal-Burwood
Community Board chairwoman
Kim Money said some of the
shingle was set to be used for
the construction of the Ōtautahi
Rugby Club car park next to
Bower Park.
However, Mr Mauger said it
was unsuitable and he would get
the club better shingle.
